Ah...summer is now over. Things tend to go back to normal these days. Alot of work and alot of regrouping is needed.

I've just come back from the excavations at Kissonerga-Skalia. It was a fabulous one.

I met alot of interesting people there, although the living conditions weren't the best.

Oh well i also liked the site too! It seems to be an Early Bronze Age settlement, the first in western Cyprus. I only dug in one trench this time, but it was all worth it. In synopsis we found something like a firing pit or small sized kiln for pottery firing. Also near by i found an interesting collection of seashells, crab legs, small bones, limpet shells and some seeds and charcoal that give evidence of people living and possible dining

, while the carbonized seeds and charcoal can give a more definite date to the site via radiocarbon dating. More importantly i also found a hook-like object made of tin-bronze, led or silver and it was the only metal found on site. Finally i found for the first time in my life a whole pot!

It seems to be some kind of jug with one handle and vertical rim. Ah...i can't wait to go back next year. This one was the first of the site and it seems to be promising.

Now i'm back at Nicosia and still sittign in front of my PC trying to get some work done. I promise this year to be more fruitful and with more deviations uploaded.

Heil to all the good citizens of Deviant Art. I have redesigned my Journal as i had much inspiration lately. I hope you like it.

Be healthy, keep dreaming, go and create.

Summer is here and so are summer vacations. Yay.

Firstly i had a 15 days trip to Italy. My sweety housed me for all that time. It has been the best vacations i've ever had and Italy is a great country. We visited Rome, Florence and Venice. It was alot of fun and i had the opportunity to take many photos from all the monuments, artistic creations and the people of Italy. I finally stopped taking photos cause my camera broke.

3-4 buttons just stopped functioning and now it has been sent to service. Oh well...at least i have 1800 to enjoy.

Apart from the magnificent views, the majestic scenery, the extraordinary flavors of Italy i also loved the lifestyle and modus vivent. It's calm, serene, relaxed and yet full to the max. The culture in Rome, the simplicity of life, the warmth of people is the things i liked best. That i reckon as a suitable environment for life and learning. That is why Italy and particularly Rome is one of the cities i'll be considering in the near future as a propable destination for Master's degree in Archaeology.

Apart from this i have been to excavations at Agia Varvara in Cyprus for 15 days with Toronto University and Cornell University teams. We have been staying at a wonderful house at Pera Oreinis and we were digging a location at Agia Varvara Asprogkremmos. It was an invaluable experience, as it was my first neolithic era dig. The finds where mostly lithics and the site has no architectural remains. Yet it is one of the most important sites in Cyprus for two main reasons: a. It proves that human was present in Cyprus prior to Chirokoitia, Kalavasos and Schilourokampos and after Aetogkremmos. This is something like finding a missing link ad filling a gap in the history of Cyprus. b. We started finding evidence that Cyprus might had some kind of relations with Near East and Mesopotamia in particular, but that will be more officially announced when the first results of artifacts analysis come out.

Now i am at home resting for a couple of weeks. I got a nail infection and i'm treating it with antibiotics. While at it i'm also writting up a seminar essay that is due until September. The theme this time is about ancient Greek warships of the Geometric and Archaic era, which means ships before the trireme. Kinda complicated subject, but i think i'll manage. All i have to do is sit and read alot of material i found, most in French unfortunately. Oh well...at least this gives me time to also work on some more things i've been meaning to.

So in the list of to do things i'll have to put:
- Editing of photos from Italy: I've selected the top 200 and will be doing photocorrections in Photoshop. After that i'll start posting here on DA. Maybe a couple of samples within this week.
- Website for Archaeological Society: Hopefully with the help of some friends who studied programming i'll manage to start this project which i have been planning for so long.
- Working on some skins: I'm planning to finish at least one DX skin that has taken ages to complete. Lot's of coding was needed and i hope it is worth it.

Before going back to University in September for the final year i will also be going to a new excavation at Kissonerga Skalia in August. It's a Middle Bronze Age location and it's the first year that will be excavated so we are all anxious and curious what will be unveiled. Stay tuned for more on this after the excavation finishes.

I have been out of DA for some time now due to University workload, but now i have about a week of activity prior to finals.

So this is it.

First things first i've got a problem with the 10000th visitor award!!! To my surprise i got 3 people claiming the prize. This has gotten me into thoughs....is it because three persons actually visited the exact time the site, or is someone cheating?

I think the latter occurs. I've sent notes to the three winning deviants stating to send screenshots with system clock showing, so that i can see who came in first. I hope you respond.

In the case all are legit what do i do? Any ideas someone? I certaintly don't have money for 3 six month subs...

Apart from this the first week of excavation is over.

Now i'm home for Easter for a couple of days and today i've got to settle all my internet accounts. I'm digging at a round house structure, which is quite interesting. Stay tuned for the photos

Hey guys and girls i'm leaving for excavations during Easter Time!!!

I'll be for a whole two weeks up to Souskiou-Laona in Paphos. A perfect place to be during Easter. Relax on top of a hill, rather than boring family gatherings and church! I promise to bring back many photos.

As for the winner of the subscription, in case the milestone is broken while i'm over at excavations please do send me e-mail with screenshot and when i come back i'll award the sub.

I'd like firstly to apologise to all the people i watch for not commenting on their works for some time now. It's not that i bear malice towards all of you guys and girls, it's just that i didn't have much time lately. This weekend i'll get some time and give out as many comments as i can.

Alot of good things have been going on recently.

For starters i just got airmail from my girl and this makes my heart fly.

Apart from this the University started again. Tha classes are kinda cool and so are most of the teachers.

Oh and i got alot of my inspiration back...been working on many pieces, both in visual and scriptual form. In due time i'll be uploading these in DA.

Just today i got my second Daily Deviation and that made me start thinking...this great community has given so much to me and now is time to give something back.

Abilities:
I mostly edit my pictures in one way or another, but every so often I take a picture that barely needs any re-editing, and of course place them on deviantart
Tools:
I got my camera only a year ago, and yet, within a year there are already new cameras' taking much better quality! However I work with what I have. Here's My Gallery if you are interested.

Abilities:
I take mostly scenery photos, and since I live on the great lakes in the United States' Midwest, I get all sorts of weather to take pictures of. I'm one of those people that take a bunch of pictures of the same scene, then post the best one or two. I also put pics together, like something too big for one frame, so I take several photos, moving the camera a little each time.
Tools:
My own camera just broke, but I will be getting a new one soon; a PowerShot 610, or something like that. If anything needs to be touched up, I do it in either Photoshop Elements, at my house, or drag it to my friends compy and use her professional edidion of Adobe Photoshop.

Abilities:
I take mainly Storm Photographs because it is more fun than Still Life. The Thrill of the chase really. I also take many photos of Animals, mainly pets, but have been known to get lucky enough to get a random wild animal in its natural setting.
Tools:
Canon EOS Rebel GII is my camera, yes I'm still old school. Hoping to get a new one within the next 6 months. I also develop my own Black and White photography when I get the cash to renew my Membership at the local art center for access.

I like taking photo's and editing them slightly. However I have started to do a series of works to build upon my photoshop skills, and to finish the '100 picture challenge' that you can find on my homepage journal.
Tools:
I used to live in the stoneage when 'paint' was my number one making scheme, however I have been using photoshop for a year now, and am slowly getting better. Here's My Gallery if you are interested.

Abilities:
My experience ranges from digital art/photomanipulations, to designing promotional material for leading electronic music promoters, to complete visual solutions covering everything from promotional material to web-site appearance and logo/brand design.Recently I started exploring the world of digital video art.

For now, I only use my 0.5 mechanical pencil and, rarely, a bit of charcoal for big projects. Now that I'm in the process of learning, I will (in the near future) learn how to use my Photoshop CS2 efficiantly ^.^

Painting: oil, acrylic, watercolor & multimedia
Ceramics: wheel thrown/slab built pottery, sculpture, & decor

I have Photoshop and Paintshop Pro which I would like to learn how to use better. I currently use them mostly for preping things for a website and touching up images and photos for print or to put up here on DA. However I am torn whether I want to spend too much time learning it because I am very tactile, and not into a lot of process. I still need a lot of work redeveloping my traditional art skills.. hmmmm...

I just got photoshop, i've never used anything but my mits before.

Abilities:
Drawing: just pencils and erasers, hoping to branch out one day.

I just like to draw. I am randomly inspired, and do what I feel. I also paint in oils, and watercolors, but those are generally big so cant get em up here. Also I love Chalk, have a couple big ones that I just loved doing, such freedom and a mess. Much fun.

Pencils of all shades, Tortillions, Erasers. Oil, and Watercolor paints, those are always fun. And my Brain.

Well this week was all about the DevArt Meet by CyprusDA. It was both a pleasant, inspirational and very interesting experience. I really do look forward to more meetings during the year with more members this time.

The people and the impressions they made from my point of view:

= A pretty serious lad with a striking sense of logic, packed with desire for life.

A trustworthy and eager beaver personality with high moral level.

= A serious and sedate girl and a good character judge.

Studies psychology so beware: She can analyze everything. Even your smile.

Also has a great,yet delicate sense of humour.

= A real and original nut,

full of life and a sympathetique smile. Modest and highly creative. Posseses a rare kind of wisdom, the power to understand other people.

= A very cute girl with impressive and rather fine style. Gotta love the hair and smile.

One of the skillful ones with all around knowledge on graphics.

Also a kind person and a genuine fighter.

= Another fine personality, comes in a 2-in-1 pack with ~bikikiz.

The wildness of character (

) remained rather tamed due to fatigue. Surely has depth and appetite to talk about anything.

= Down to Earth type of guy, who knows what he wants in life.

Full of ideas and future plans. Also honest and friendly. Probably a beer fan too.

= A rather quiet guy that we didn't have the chance to chat alot, due to my early leave. Nothing much is happening this time of the year, but i've started re-working on a DX Theme, as well as some Html. Hello to everybody and welcome to my new Journal. As you may notice i plan to start being more active here in DA for as long as time permits. I hope everyone is enjoying Xmas holidays and life in general. Many wished and may Santa bring you the thing you most wish for.

Well first of all exams are over. It has been a long and tiresome month. I had 5 exams in a row two weeks back and that was stressing enough. Plus i had to deliver two more essays on Cyprus-Crete Bronze Age. Anyone interested to read anything?

Oh well now Holidays start. What are your plans everybody? I'm planning to go to Limassol for a couple of weeks and then head back here for some more work on the computer. I'm trying to make a new DX Theme dedicated to ~adni18 for he has been an inspiration for a long time. Also i plan to backup alot of things i got here. Last backup session ended at 22 DVDs. I have another 30-40 i want to backup, so that i'm sure all my data are safe. As for trips, i don't plan to go abroad, but i do plan to visit a couple of friends here and there within Cyprus and also take my girl to fieldtrips and photohunts all over the isle.

a. I'm finishing final semester exams at December 20th. Hopefully i'll do good. Currently i'm writting two graded essays: one on Cypriot ceramics of the bronze age and another on the Urbanisation of Cyprus in Bronze Age in relation to the palatial civilisation of Crete on the same age.

b. Planning to create a website for the Archaeological Society of the University of Cyprus. Hopefully i'll learn some Java, Flash and Html in the process...

c. Remake the Journals of accounts here in DA in CSS style this time.

d. Finish off the AuroraDX, a long taking process dedicated to a good friend everyone should know as Adni18.

e. Spend much time with my girl cause she's leaving for Erasmus at Italy next semester...well you'll be getting photos from there too then.

f. Upload lots of stuff i haven't uploaded in the past three months.

Well you might be wondering what i have been up to in the last 15 or so days...well i have been extremely busy. Still am actually.

First the good news:

- I have finally finished my first ever seminar essay on Byzantine architecture of the Hagia Sophia in Constantinoples in comparison to byzantine sources and documents of the 6th-15th century. Yup it's been a great experience chasing after little bits and bites of information and knowledge. I have enjoyed every part of the process and have produced a massive work. Statistics on the project's final outcome:
+ Volume 01: 172 pages of the actual research writting.
+ Volume 02: 183 pages dedicated to sources cataloging, bibliography, tables and a rather large appendix of byzantine sources.
+ CD 01: 750 photos of Hagia Sophia (modern and ancient maps, interior and exterior photos, historical and manuscript illustrations, ground plans and sections, 3D represantations and a real time 3D model of the church i was granted from Miralab in Geneva).
+ CD 02: Around 3000 pages of textual material used for research including full books, articles, researches, Ph.D. theses, corpora, primary sources in translation, digitized sources, a few digitized manuscripts and of course byzantine and other primary sources in Ancient Greek or Latin.

Overall i'm happy with it, considering all the endless workhours i spent on it and i'll be delivering it tomorrow to the professor. I've also posted of photo of it. Check it here:

- I'm nearly finished with my midterms. I only have one left on Nov. 15th and it's Ancient Greek, Thucydides.

Alot to study and i ain't good enough at ancient greek. On a happier tone i got some good or at least satisfactory grades in my other midterms ranging from 7.5-10.

- Im also nearly finishing my presentation material on Cypriot Ceramics of the Bronze Age in comparison to Cretan Ceramics of the same period. It's a joined presentation with my girlfriend and we'll be presenting it on Monday.

Again alot to read, alot of confusion cause nothing is study on the period. On Wednesday i was reading for 10h straight all of the publication data of bronze age excavations here in Cyprus and i'm still confused on dating ceramics. A rather complex matter, but i have learned alot.

- I'm one of the 10 finalists in the best overall wallpaper competition over at GUI Championships 2006: [link] Odd and unexpected, yet i love it.

Bad news:

- I'm really tired.

I feel i'm almost running out of energy. Plus i'm starting to get an insomnia syndrom, which i hope is due to anxiety and nothing permanent.

I'm busy as hell, so i don't pass much time here anymore...

Until November 15th i have 6 midterms and a presentation in class about Cyprus ceramics during the whole Bronze Age.

Alas i have good news on the last semester's seminar. I got permission from the prof to deliver only the half of it, due to size/time problems. So I'm nearing to the end of the first grand section about Byzantine Sources which approximates to 350 pages. Plus the prof said if it's good enough he will try to publish it as a stand-alone book, a project that i'll be working with him till the end of my fourth year.

Also in the light of the UCY Archaeological Society I'm sending a Cultural Newsletter to friends and members here in Nicosia every week. If anyone is interested to be receiving it just write me your e-mail here. (Drawback: It's in Greek only and is focused mainly in cultural events at Nicosia and the University).

Furthermore i participate in the Photoclub photo exhibit at the Prothalamos tis Aithousas Teleton at UCY. Feel free to go by the expedition and see all the photos. Some are quite interesting.

Must be one of those days...

Today a professor of mine called me and some other 3rd university year students to inform us that we are not allowed to take a seminar lesson because we did not comply with the requirements!!! We are supposed to be on our 6th semester in order to take a seminar lesson and we are on the 5th. We keep telling the professors that we want to take it, to put a little faith in us, to let us prove we are up to it and they just turned us down!!! I don't quite get it yet, last semester (the 4th) i asked and took a seminar lesson and i managed really really well, the professor had no problem, my work was done right and everything was fine. This year all sort of problems emerged...I don't get it...rules are supposed to be there to be broken when needed, our professors keep urging us to take higher stakes, try different and more difficult things, to try and think out of the box and yet when it comes to this they still seem to want us to behave like sheeps. I really ain't that angry, cause i still have time to take all seminars, it just makes me feel sad cause they betrayed their words. It just has to be one of those days...

On the other side of this they can't prohibid me from wathing the seminar, so i'll take it as observer.

To pick up from where i left we've finished with the third trench. We uncovered a continuance of stone floor and a stolen wall!!! Yup you heard right. We found the fundament of the wall next to the stone floor but lower than it. And the width showed that it must have been some kind of a wall there, maybe something like perimetre low wall for the churche's backyard. But as the prof explained to us it muist have remained above earth's surface and the people living near by took advantage of the ready-made stones and took them to build their homes.

Interestingly enough i found a small coin in this trench and generally we found lots of roof tile fragments, as well as some glass and some good late roman fineware bits and pieces. Oh and for the last part of it i also found in a 20x20cm space bones of a small bird (maybe chicken, partridge or grouse). Somebody was having fun back then...

After this we went back to the first trench and the next bit of it. It was quite exciting cause we went deeper and uncovered a beautyful wall, well made of large stones. We found very little fragments of pottery and some parts of Cyprus marble (it is not actual marble, it's just the scientific term for schist), which were propably used for wall decoration. Due to space limitation (the excavating area was reduced to a 2x1m triangle) the trench team had to break up. Two of the girls remained there, while me and my girl continued to our fourth trench!

The fourth trench was near the possible churche's outer wall and it was previously excavated. Basically the prof wanted us to dig a testing incision to see where the floor reached. Well we started working on a limited 1.5x1.5m area and went deeper and deeper. We reached the depth where the floor should be yet the soil was still soft and we went even deeper. To cut a long story short now we are at least 40cm beneath floor surface and we still haven't found solid surface. The foundations and first rocks of a supposed wall are above us at 50-60cm height. Yet the biggest surprise of all is that we've started unearthing fragments of pottery that do not belong to the phase we are supposed to be at. It is supposed to be a proto-byzantine or pre-byzantine site, yet we uncovered hellenistic, classical and archaic bits of pottery in a very limited space, which proves that the location must have been used much before christians built their temple there.

As for interesting finds from other trenches well here's a list:
- A small part of a marble column made of red marble from Iasio or Tainaro.
- Some good quantities of Prokonisian marble for wall and floor pavings. Also rusty nails that prove that these were used for wall paving too.

- Part of a circular offerings table, quite rare and made of good white Penteli marble.
- Lots of pottery, tableware, cooking-ware, fineware, floor tiles and roof tiles.
- Many coins, dating from 4th-7th century (although most of them need to be examined by coin-expert, which we wait to arrive).

As for the fourth week i'll be out of excavations. I've taken a one week leave to finish another great part of my seminar essay on Hagia Sophia, which has grown alot. I'm at page 118 up to now and still have lots to write.

My girl has also taken this week off, due to family trip to Italy for a week! She'll be taking a tour of the country and what a luck, it'll be a festival in every city she goes due to the fact that Italy has won the World Cup. I'm so happy for her and can't wait for photos of all the places she'll be visiting.

Well this week wasn't that lucky as the previous one, but it was invaluable from the aspect of understanding the whole place.

We excavated our first trench and found stone floor and then we continued to the neighbouring trenche where the situation is rather complex. The trench was next to a mosaic and near the suspected church's apse. We uncovered rock surface there along with some plaster paved floor and scattered stones. Thus we stopped and wait for professor's orders to continue.

And since we had another day ahead of us we started our third trench which is one of the outer ones. I remember last year we excavated near by and found an exterior stone floor, thus we expect to find propably the continuance of it this year.

As for findings we've found some good late roman tableware fragments, as well as large late roman amphora fragments. Also tiny bits of glass from candelabra and the most impressive finding is some small bits of wall paintings.

I've got a great trench team and i'm co-captain with my girl in the trench.

We found one of what is suspected to be an exterior wall up to now, but hey we just got started.

It was a hard adjustments week and it was great too.

Now i've come back home for the weekend.

Oh...did i say i am waaaaaay lucky this year? In the week past i've found:
- One bronze medium sized coin with an M engraving on it.
- Several fragments of roman tableware pottery.
- Several bits of glass mainly from candelabra.
- A glass handly of a lamp which is the first of the kind found on site.
- Two glass ring stones, which were quite a surprise.
- One random piece of red figured hellenistic vas.
- Several fragments of Late Roman I amphorae.

Well the worst has happen. My PC is not starting. Due to the heat i must have burned the motherboard and/or power supply of my computer. Well it sucks but it's gone to the technicians now and thank God i have backup of all my data. It'll take quite a few days to be restored and by then my excavation period at Paphos will begin.

Today we went on a field trip to the village Leukara and then up to the mountains at Kato Drys, from there higher to the Maxairas monastery and finally to the Saint Minas monastery. It was a blast of a day and took nearly 100 photos, some of which will be posted later on.

That's all for now, i hope everyone here is having a blast of a time.

PS: Just remembered!!! I gotta go to the army tomorrow for my duty as a reservist. We have a two day exercise. And this time DON'T expect photos. It's just not allowed. Although i look kinda nice in my army suit.

- Picture. (.jpg): Handy, useful, small filesize. Also easy to make.
- Powerpoint interactive presentation: More difficult, yet better for the user. It's the visual thing.

Bigger filesize due to animations.
- Html: This would be a more difficult way, but i think .mht will do wonders with it. PS: Not interactive.
- Movie: I can capture my screen while doing the tricks, but it must be of bigger filesize. (Maybe if you have Camatasia Studio or Lotus Word i can make smaller filesizes due to special screen capture proggies).
- DesktopX Widget or Object: This would take the most time cause it needs some coding too, but it would be the most useful cause it works as a desktop object.

So what do you think? Which one do you think serves you best?

Continue a DX theme i left unfinished.

Explore the possibility to get a wacom tablet.

As for the summer i wish i could be more active on DA, but i'll have to compromise my time here. I'll be participating in two (and maybe three) excavations! So...till 19th of June i'll be here, afterwards well i'll still be here, but less.

Meanwhile a most interesting week came to pass. I had been at excavations over at Paphos's ancient theatre with an Australian excavating group. And it was a blast. Quite interesting people. Some highlights of the week:

1. Our "guests" in the room which you'll see if you check some photos i'll be posting...

2. The strange and rocking Australian food.
3. Many tours to never seen before places like the 40 Columns Castle.
4. Meeting with other deviants at a cafe at Paphos. Met in person life-persists, eccentric, perforced-flow, tomasNY and Gothou. It was quite an evening.

5. Went with my father yesterady for some work in the fields and had my camera on. Just wait and see some macro shots...of interesting stuff...

6. I've shrinked my gallery by moving stuff over to scraps...feeew...146 scraps and 62 surviving devs. I hope this way it works better for all. I'll be leaving works for a month and then moving the not so good ones over at scraps. It should work as a large large depot for all my works.
7. Thinking to subscribe to DA and become a full member...trying to save some money for this cause.

I hope everyone has a good time. I know times are rough this season due to exams starting...

The first one as you all know it's Easter for Orthodox christians, so i'm taking off for my village, where i don't have an internet connection...so...out for one week.

The second one i'm going to an excavation at Paphos' ancient theatre (oxi to odeio, to theatro) for another week until university lessons begin...so...out for a second one.

I'll leave some Easter treats for you...the first two being photos i sent for the Photo Club's exchibition here at University of Cyprus. Hope you like them.

So here goes:
1. At age 1 i accidentally drunk vacuum cleaner's special carpet cleaning liquid and had to endure a stomach douche....yeah you laugh now...

Some say this was the root of all weird things about me.

2. I eat too much and gain too little weight. It's true. I can eat up to 5 full meals each day and gain very little to no weight! I'm 1,80m and only 73kg...And this ain't not due to exercise...

3. I like to combine meat and fish of all kinds with milk, although some say fish and milk become poison. Dunno if food combinations are considered weird though...
4. I have a very troubled sleep...several times i wake up with bedsheets wrapped around my neck. The weirdest case was when i actually woke up to find out that i actually overthrew the whole mattress over the wooden case and was sleeping in the wooden case of the bed...still pondering what went down that night!

5. Dunno if it is weird but i like to sleep very little. Basically if it were possible i'd prefer not to sleep at all. I sleep on average 4-6 hours each day. Is this weird?
6. I ain't no nerd, genious or brainy, but i get good grades. Ain't that weird? I got a 20/20 high school certificate with 14 blue ribbons (=aristeia) and currently i have a median of 9.5/10 in university. Maybe it's persistence.

Other that these i have some great news

a. I finished seminar presentations. It was in two parts, one 1h 50m and one 50m. It was long tiring and rewarding. Thank God the prof and co-students liked both presentations very much and it was very understandable, although i talked fast. Now all i have to do is finish off the final text...i'm currently on page 40 at chapter 5/13.
b. I got two literature prizes on Monday. The creative writting contest was held this year by the Journalism and Literature clubs of the University of Cyprus. I got 2nd place in poetry and 2nd place in short story.

This makes me happy.

c. I got my own column in the Journalism Club's magazine called Foititiki. I'll be writing the "Aixmi tou Doratos" (=translation: Spearhead) column. It'll be a critique column on the politics of our university. Also after elections i'm secretary of the Journalism club.
d. It made me happy to see 7 clubs in UCY join forces for one common event. The archaelogy club (that is my girlfriend and me) took part in it by presenting the marine/aquatic archaelogy of Cyprus. Also i made the poster for the event.
