I had been shopping around for about a week and finally decided to break down for one. I checked out Best Buy earlier this week and they had a whole dSLR setup with financing. Though only one model had a $50 discount. I finally decided to go with CC since (I believe) the employees are paid by commission. Though that's usually a bad thing, it's a good thing for getting a good deal. They had a promo going on which included some firedog crap, a ... For Dummies book, and a printer. I didn't really need a printer so, even though it technically wouldn't cost me anything they threw in a 4GB SD Card and even lowered the price of the camera by $50 to match their online store. So yeah, sweet deal!

About the Camera

I went for the (new?) Olympus E-420. It's somewhat of an entry-level camera and the price was just right for the features (around $550, lens included). I really love the size and weight. The last SLR I used was my Dad's old (like 10 years) Canon Rebel, and that was a huge heavy monster of a thing. But the E-420 is light and small – supposedly the world's smallest. I love it. I love it.

What now?

It's really just a hobby for me but that's what I said about design. Now my life and job revolve around web (and some print) design. I'll be reading up on the Dummies guide and perhaps some online articles. If you have any tips or suggestions for an SLR newb like me, please don't hesitate to comment. I'll be posting some pics to an old flickr account.

© 2008 - All Rights Reserved - Danny Garcia | powered by dA | images hosted by (mt)

Along with the launch of my new portfolio and blog comes a new dA journal CSS. It's nothing like the other stuff but it's just something simple, which is exactly what I need. Nothing more, nothing less.

About the Code

Well, let's just say dA does a pretty crummy job at letting you customize your journal with CSS. You can't even have a list of properties within your code, every entry has to be separate. This results in some seriously hideous and repetitive markup.

What they need to do is just open it up. So what if some people will screw around with it too much and make code that looks like crap? It's worth it to us that know what we're doing.

It's not just the css

It's also the markup that we are allowed to post. Though, most markup is permitted, it is rendered terribly. Why not just let us choose how it will be displayed. For example, instead of making code optional wherever you insert it, it should either be mandatory or blocked altogether. See, if there were a "HTML" button so you could edit the complete code that will be inserted it would allow me to make sure that I get the results I want (Especially after spending a load of time on the CSS).

But instead, It's confusing and ugly. (Also, somebody enable style-able headers instead of making me div everything...)

So, yeah.

Anyways, as far as what I will be doing within the future... I don't know yet. I'll still post some stuff here whenever I get a chance, but I've been really getting into both web design and motion graphics.

Account Management

As far as the paid account... It's gonna expire in just about two months. I would actually consider continuing the paid membership just because of the CSS Journals. No other reason could get me back. And if they don't improve the features I won't continue my membership. It all really started when I decided to purchase some dA stickers. The payment form wasn't working and dA still charged my cc (over and over). I never received my stickers. I reported the problem and never heard back from deviantART. What a waste.

But...

DeviantART's strong point has always been the community. (Now mostly overrun by 15-year-olds. Don't get me wrong, nothing bad about young peoples running a community. That's how I really started... But my teen years were spent in front of a computer. Not trying to find myself, my image, where I belonged - not expressing myself, not trying to be the internet's copyright police, not pretending to know more than I did. Instead, I worked countless hours trying to find out how things worked and why.) What I'm trying to say is, back in the day, the internet was a different place.

© 2008 - All Rights Reserved - Danny Garcia | powered by dA | images hosted by (mt)

Well, yes. It's not finished, and it certainly isn't the final result of what's shown in the demo.
But it's okay, I think. I've never taken any motion graphics classes or anything like that. Just learned it all on my own.

First Things First

So, like I said, here it is!
The final version of this Summer's CSS. Be sure to download the code to the right ➫
The features are highlighted below in the "CSS Features" section. Please feel free to comment and ask questions on it.
I'm starting to design my own websites for local clients. You can check out an unfinished version of one here.
I do recommend that you view this using Safari 3. It's an amazing cross-platform (at least Mac and Win ) web browser with some great features! What I really love about it, is that it is compatible with the latest CSS3 features, putting it way ahead of the competition.

CSS Features

There are several new things added since v1.0, the most exciting being the two-column layout and the 'quotes' thingy shown below:

This is gonna be some really cool quote thing... 'aight?
You can quote something that someone said or use it to display code and stuff...

~Danny

Among other new things is the menu bar on top.
It's not a real menu, rather, just a set of links that are shown non-obtrusively but are noticeable enough to provide the user with a clear form of navigation.

There's the new color scheme, which I wasn't so sure about, but since have fallen in love with.
To complement this scheme is the use of the repeating background and header images forming what appears to be an illusion of depth and dimension.

Extras:
There are some little things here and there that add to the whole experience.
Some things like being able to "Maximize" the journal as well as color-matching links and let's not forget the Pop-Tart at the bottom.

I highly suggest you people head on over to StealThisCSS and... well... steal some css. You usually have about a 1 in 150 chance of winning some code, nonetheless it's worth it.
I got a MacBook Pro for my Birthday! And a backpack for it on Christmas!
specs: 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 17 in. Non-glossy Widescreen, 3GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 100 GB HDD (it's the fastest they had), and the cruddiest graphics card I've ever used.
Mac laptops, in my experience, excel in every field but the gaming "sector" (<- corny word), I shouldn't have to buy a desktop Mac just to have nice graphics.
Other than that, I love it. As they say: once you go Mac, you never go back (except on weekends and holidays just to refill on some CS:S)
Let's see, I checked out BitRocket as soon as I got my Mac, it was okay, I guess, not allot of extra features, really nice and simple. Which was also the downside, it just sort of left you wondering at times if it was really working.
So I trashed that and got Azureus, and their new service which I found 3 seconds ago, Zudeo.
Really good, no wonder everyone uses it, lots of features that adapt to whether you're a beginner or an expert at torrenting. Remember, always abide by the law, at least when you know you're gonna get caught...duh!

Anyone here ever used allofmp3.com ?
I have signed up for it, the problem's that they only accept master card, and not Visa. Apparently they've undergone some lawsuits.
They give you $0.20 USD for free when you sign up.
So that's enough for about a song and a third. The problem's that their encoding process highly limits the quality of the audio. Even at 128bit it hurts your ears.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
So, I switched to Apple's iTunes Store thing.
a buck for a song? it's too expensive for me once seeing allofmp3.com's prices. But at least it's reasonable quality.
For some of you it's not even a question, it's Apple hands down.
The problem with macs is that they're overpriced when you compare their hardware components to that of a PC. Don't give me the excuse that macs perform faster because of the Operating system. I'm not about to pay $500+ just because of an OS. The only reason that I would get a Dell XPS is because of the Graphics Card, it comes with the latest version that you can get for a laptop from NVIDIA. Which is really awesome, macs run ATI cards, which means that if I load bootcamp, my performance with games is already limited.
Just let me know what you have and what your experience has been if you have either a Dell or an Apple notebook.

When I said I was going to try out World of Warcraft the other night, I got lots of e-mail begging me not to. People were afraid I'd get sucked in and never return to the comic. Well, no worries. I tried WoW out for a few hours. It's cute. Enjoyable I guess. I'll play a little more until the 10-day trial is up, but I don't imagine I'll buy it. I'm old skool, yo. I'm single-playa. I like to aim at my enemies. Hit the pause button when I gots ta pee. Quicksave and quickload. Dats how I roll.

Wow, my class just got done doing our senior play(s). We did two, The Cop and the Anthem, by O Henry; and Comedy of Errors, by Shakespeare. I'm so glad it's over with, I can finally concentrate on other stuff, like designing and not submiting cheap crap.
In a couple of months I'll be getting one of these sweet babies! (hopefully!)
Wacom's Cintiq 21UX
I have started using Cinema4D. It's preaty cool.
And RealFlow, which simulates dynamic fluids for supremely realistic effects.
I have something that has to do with XBOX but I don't know if I am alowed to post that. Oh well, time to look over the DevArt guidelines...
