I need to make a new self-portrait.

I also needed a shorter journal submission. [check]

Got some event photography to hand in so yey.

Not only does this have an unusual focus point, but the insanely shallow depth of field is cool beyond everything!

This is just cool; period.

I just noticed this is form the same deviant as the first feature today, but hey! It's that awesome! The ditortion simply adds to the subjects expression and pictured goofiness.

This has been sitting in my to-see list for ages and I'm trying to figure out what excuse I used to put off looking at it properly.

Isn't it amazing how selective we are about the information we put f ourselves online? Sometimes we're even selective about the information others put up of us online!

It's understandable.

I read (I think it was on The Times) that this teacher, who'd recently got her job (or it was her first job, or something... I wasn't that interested at the time) and got fired because the Board of Education of the school she worked for found a picture up in MySpace of her with a pirate's hat and a cup (Just a cup! We don't know for sure what's in it), labeled "drunken pirate".

Sure, on the one hand you have the BOE thinking "We don't want a "drunken pirate" teaching in our shcool. How is that going to affect the kids' educaion? What are the parents going to think?" They have an obligation towards the school and it's understandable.

However, which adult (excluding recovering alcoholics, Muslims and any other person who's in a situation that completely impedes them from drinking) doesn't indulge in the odd glass of wine, or a whiskey n the rocks, or a weekend beer? Just because you drink doesn't mean you're a disrespectable member of society. I mean, for goodness sake, I'm sure The Queen drinks at social events, if not more often (and yes, I am refering to HM Elizabeth II).
Here we have a young woman (mid to late twenties) who has just taken a major step into the big pool of adulthood, but still has not yet rid herself of the feeling of uncensorship you just have to throw away the moment you grow up, being slammed, splashed and sucked into the kiddie pool.
It was a dress up party. Those are the typical twenty year-old celebratory methods. Afterwards, people gradually develop a taste for a glass of wine at home, or a martini in an art gallery, or a quiet pint at the pub. It was a normal, festive event. Did it go out of hand? Did she actually get drunk? Did she even look drunk in the picture? What if they found out that the cup was filled with nothing more than (drum roll please) pineapple juice (Oh! the horror!)? And don't come up with this crap simply that the people in the PTA or the BOE or any of those organisations never drank to excess in their life, because there is no such thing.

This one case just serves to illustrate how the internet is this one big interview machine in which you have to constantly put your best smile out, whilst trying to not seem like a figment of someone's imagination. Worst of all, the scrutiny never ends! Remember: this lady was sent away AFTER she was interviewed and offered the job.

Yet, sometimes it's good if people hold back. There have been times where I've browsed the "Nudes" galery, here in dA, only to find what, to me, was gratuitous nakedness (I couldn't even classify it as nude) and bare-crotch shots. It was at these times that I wished people would have a bit of censorship. Yes... penises are art. [side note for those who are thick enough: I was being sarcastic]In the absence of self-censorship, we happily have the dA mature content censoring programme. I'm very grateful dA.

However, we still have occasions where self-exposure online might be helpful. There is an ongoing project called the Personal Genome Project (PGP) (see Postagene.com in New Scientist Magazine, issue: 25th October 2008, p. 6), which aims to find links between genes and diseases. Once in the Project, a person would be required to submit genetic samples and their complete medical history. This could lead to a revolutionary study on the weight genes have on the development of a disease, and, by elimination, also the role environmental factors play in the whole process.
However, is gene scanning acceptable? Let's hypothesise: say there's a link between intelligence and a certain gene. If the admissions office in a school or scientific institution decide to check this gene in two candidates, who have the same qualifications and just as good a reputation, what would they find? Would they find a difference? If they did, should it affect their choice? Isn't it like scanning a foetus for the extra chromosome in pair number 21 to see if it is going o have Down's Syndrome? One of the scientist's daughter was afraid that "potential boyfriends might google his genome before asking her out on a date."
I empathise here. Before you even meet someone, you're checking their genome. It's like making a police background check. Yet, I feel people should be reminded of a naturally occuring gene-scanning process: PHEROMONES! That's right, every sniff you take, you're assessing the person in front of you for favourable genetic content. If someone smells nice, it means that they have a different genetic code to yours and tat your future children have a high chance of having stronger immunitary systems! You're gene-scanning your date as you spea over a up of coffee. The only difference between pheromone sniffing and PGP is that PGP...

Apart from me feeling like I should make a new one, here's what I have to say:
DAiD's, as I acronyse them (if it's not a word, it is now!), are something that make up quite a big part of the community. They're what represents each deviant in their own page. It's like a personal statement or the "about me" section you fill up in networking sites, or your CV and letter of application when you're looking for a job.

So here's a lineup of DAiD's that I think simply look cool.

Tell me you don't love this... It's amazing! It somehow seems like a mix between a Jim Morrison and a Johnny Depp portrait.

This one I just love for the pure character it shows. It's so simple, yet (I'm weirding myself out here) so funny!

Trippy and psychadelic and all those other words they used back in the 60's and 70's that should be brought back!

Ok, ok, ok... not the best technique, not the most professional medium... BUT it does look cool and it shows quite a bit of the deviant. I could see this vectorised or made int an illustration

I couldn't decide between the two. In a way, they complement eachother quite nicely...

I'm simply loving the simplicity of the shot, but still feel a twinge (funny word) of complexity in it...

The hair, the pose, the colours... just everything is amazing in this shot!

Very good use of light painting (or similar technique I am unaware of. It could go as digital double exposure...)Loving it!

Amazing shot, capturing the motion and intricacies of Portuguese Folk dance.

With the progression of her career, Marisa has quickly become a Portuguese national symbol. Still, as this shot shows, fame has not dilluted her love for Fado.

I like the sublety of the gradient, the simplicity of the deasing and overall the cutenes you're able to preserve in each design

I'm pretty shocked by how low McCain's campaigners went. To me, political campaigns are about exposing your ideas and points of view, debating, thinking and having the balls and maturity to admit you were wrong at some point of your existence. This self-righteous, ego-glorifying, "but-he-has-a-boogger-hanging-from-his-nose" approach this year's campaign is taking is, in my opinion, turning U.S.A. elections into some bizarre, nationwide popularity contest.
Democrat as I may be, I know that Obama's plan to remove al U.S. military forces from the Middle East within six months is both unrealistic and dangerous. I also find his European campaign futile. On the other hand, I support his decision to divert attention to technoogical advancements (lets remember that a lot of advances come from military research, though) and I believe in the Middle Class and Universal Equality.
McCain has a point in saying that Obama has dangerously low experience in politics and probably isn't completely aware of what being President is like. I doubt that being stuck in Vietnam for 10 years gives you that insight as well. He may have a lot of experience in Congress and that gives him an advantage, but he is getting pretty close to his expiry date and that makes a lot of people cringe. Announcing who he plans to put in for VP might help, but it can go both ways.

So what's the conclusion here? Simple: I'm happy I'm neither American, or of legal voting age. I should really start looking into Portuguese politics. By the end of this year, I'll have the ability (and Civic Responsibility) to vote. Wish me luck!

On another note, I'm in Kyoto and have spent two days in Tokyo. I'm very much impressed by the cleanliness of the cities and the Japan Rail and Tokyo Metro systems are very efficient. People look like every other person in Asia, but every once in a while you find someone who is VERY VERY well presented. Been to Noji Castle today. Love the Nightingale floors and the artwork is amazing! Not many pictures... not very inspired =S Ah well! Something will kick in at some point.

BUT FIRST! schoolwork. so... many... essays... LOL. My pc's gonna crash from all the typing! XD

before I featured this I went through ~DravenSeb's gallery and that just made the decision process harder. I ended up choosing this one because it was the picture that first got my eye. ~DravenSeb's gallery is filled with simple, honest portraits which simply remind me of what I want to achieve as a photographer. Check it out.

It has been a while since I saw such a dark-mooded picture and enjoyed it that I HAD to feature this. Simple composition which pleases the eye and the eerie feeling that there's a creepy story behind the shot helped.

Once again, bear witness to my suckerness for silhouettes! This is just one of those pictures you hang on your wall and stare at for hours just so you can feel the tranquility in them.

*Kaarmen is another one of those deviants whose pictures are so incredible I could not have chosen one to feature. I ended up with this shot because it was the first to catch my eye (again). The tones, lighting, composition, timing... everything just builds up into amazing frames that compose her gallery. Go and take a look.

~loveisaplasticshield's "sunplus" shots are reminiscent of a Louis Vuitton ad and show sophistication and sensuality all in one. Looking back in ~loveisaplasticshield's gallery you'll find superb portraits just waiting for eager viewers like you to go and appreciate them!

I like this mostly because it looks pretty. There isn't much work that focuses on simple aesthetics these days. Old school rules!

I swear I've heard of Tortuga before, but I can't remember exactly where... Either way, the emotion in this shot is just mind blowing! Look at his face! Incredible work by the photographer (and the tattoo artist... WOAH!)

Great concept and the wings look terrific! The sepia tone lets the picture be straightforward whilst still stopping it from having a cold tone.

The picture has so much to say! It's s sort of neo-gothic take to Burnett's classic novel and I love it! Must congratulate the make-up artist as well for such terrific work.

Simple and with beautiful form. It's got class and I like it

This kind of shot is quite commonplace. So what made me feature this? It has something else. Somehow I have this sense of vertigo from this shot which I simply don't get off the others. ~JeanFrancois's influence is apparent and just made me love this piece even more.

I like the use of lighting, which gives this shot amazing contrast. Take a look at the shutter speed. I'm amazed the model was able to keep perfectly still for such a length of time!

Some of you may know me enough to know that minimalism and simplicity are my thing. That said, it's pretty obvious why I chose this. I like the way the frame's positioning cuts the flower in a slightly unconventional way.

I silhouettes. They express raw human emotion by removing the intricacies of facial expressions. This piece shows an entire range of emotions from anger to love. It's like a soap opera with shadows!

Browsing the Commercial Photography>Fashion Photography gallery is, at best, tiring. In the beginning (yes, I can go way back!) it had exclusively high quality work, but it has slowly turned into a mass of apparel shots (i.e. a pair of shoes on the floor) and pictures of people who just happen to be wearing clothes. Yes, I am being quite mean, but when it comes to fashion photography I have high standards. That's what you get when you have family in the fashion industry. I'm not going to apologize for it. Either way, in the midst of all those random clothes shots you find work that oozes professionalism and hard work, such as "Alex" by ~FashionPhotographer. This diptych shows the versatility of both photographer and model!

First of all, let me congratulate Maja Holcman for the hairdo. It's spectacular! Back to the picture: The fact that it was shot for ICON Magazine gives this shot a lot of exposure, but I couldn't resist putting it up here. Everything from the depth of filed to the background to the hair, the pose, the make up... EVERYTHING IS AMAZING!

Back to England on saturday. It'll be nice to see everyone again, but on the other hand I didn't work that much (which is to say AT ALL) these three weeks so I'm screwed. Don't feel like going. No lo quiero!

For those who came here expecting a feature of their own work, I'm sorry but this incident left me without patience to redo it all and I also lost the link to your deviations. If you could be so kind as to send me a comment or note with a link to your deviation it would be great (it would take me too long a time browsing to find them again as I also don't remember the categories). I'll update the features then.

Man, this is annoying... I write quite a lot for each pic, too.

If I get nothing, I'll just use the ones I already have lined up here and then add more pics.

Angle and timing here are perfect! An incredible shot altogether. Urban Running (aka Free Running) is tough to capture in photography, much like any extreme sport. Getting the timing and shutter speed right is tough enough, but when you add composition and atmosphere to it it becomes near impossible! Congrats!

I really enjoy the contrast between the two characters in the shot. Her apathetic and static, him active and (for that fraction of a second) defying the laws of physics.

Again, all about the contrast in the shot. The stillness of the jumper with the movement of the clouds.

Compositionally perfect and excellent timing. Bravo!

Kudos not only for the photographer, but to the runners as well. Well done!

This series is being more trouble than I antecipated. I've reached 17 shots and I'm not done yet! I still have at least 3 shots to be finished!

And I just realised I have resized my pics so I can't make prints that are exactly the same as the deviations because I saved no PSD files... someone bring me a hammer so I can hit myself...

Either way. I still love my results and that's getting me through for now. Can't wait to see what the model thinks. She will go nuts! She liked the untouched files, so I HAVE to see the look on her face when she sees the finished products.

gilad and `zemotion, amongst others, because they are quite popular as it is and I would like to use that section to recommend artists with less exposure. They certainly don't need my help. Also, there were deviants there that I stopped watching after losing my past sub so I had to take them off the list. I might add a few icons there, but I'm not so sure yet

Does the background seem yellowy/beige-ish to you? It looks grey in my comp, but yellowy in the school comp, so I have no clue which one to trust. if it is yellow, please tell me so I can adjust this to grey. Thank you!

Simply genious! I love the way the artist was able to accurately isolate the lollipop's colour!

Either there's gonna be a party or someone needs to cut down on coke. Either way, good technique and makes us think a bit about mass production.

Simple. The fact that the eyes are covered gives this pic an air of mystery. There's something quite Mona Lisa about it.

The latest set of pics in ~The-Dog-Star's gallery feature a bright flash of light somewhere off-frame, which is great for capturing our attention.

WOPEEH"HOIGHAIOFHO:SGD!!!!

OK, so basically just bought me a sub (ONE YEAR!!!!) and my dear old CSS IS BACK!!!! The dude's crazy, but I'm MADLY GRATEFUL!

Had the final Performance of Pirates of Penzance tonight and it was sick! I loved it, but getting the stage make-up off was hell (specially eyeliner, how the hell do you girls do it every single day? It's was a lot of fun, I'm gonna be bored out of my skull most evenings now and I hope they do another opera next year (might audition for principal, but it would be really hard to do it without singing lessons).

Didn't have the shoot on wednesday which is sad because I can't submit any female shots for POTY. Ah well...

I'm gonna go to bed now because I need to NOT sleep in due to morning chapel.

PS: I'm gona rework the Css. Hopefully something with a mainstream font so that people don't have to download something totally alien and probably something with the DAID image

EDIT: Just submited 6 pieces and my profile makes it look like I'm a purely B&W photographer, which is a bit of a laugh considering that one of my favourite pieces is about colour. Also, I'm planning another shoot for tuesday and it's got a similar "theme" to the one I had last week so I've decided to batch them all into one massive submission.
I'm going to Portugal next month and am ecstatic about it. I was able to come into contact with a psychiatrist who'll be happy to take me in for a while so that I know how the system works.

And now to get stressed. Two tests and an essay for tomorrow. Looks like no sleep for Dave!

Yes, my lack of updates has now got a new record. Either way, I'm busy this term (and should be doing my bio homework). Here's a few things:

1. Had House Music. Was chosen to sing the solo bit in the House Song.
2. Am part of the chorus for this year's musical production, "Pirates of Penzance"
3. Am part of a band (of sorts) for this talent show that's happening soon.
4. All this singing has made me appreciate my throat's existence far more than before.
5. All these rehearsals (House Music is done now, but I'm concentrating quite a lot on the talent show and Pirates is being very demanding) mean I have to use my spare time making usre I do all my work on time, meaning I have very little time to ever come here. The fact that I'm writing this is miraculous in itself.
6. Had a shoot today, so smack new pics will be coming at some point in time. Have another shoot next week, so I might produce the shots from both shoots (they're of similar nature) and submit them all here at the same time. Plus, I need the models' consent to put them here.
7. Need to talk to my philosophy teacher because he doesn't give me any constructive criticism, just "OK David". Don't get me wrong, I like the OK, it's a compliment. Yet, all I'm getting are 6's. I WANT 7'S!!! What will make me go from an OK to a GREAT? I need to know.
8. Need to work on my French. Specifically my writing (I can speak well enough). Any Francophones out there please recommend a book. I would be very grateful if you did so.
9. I have been able to catch up with and hand in ALL of my bio work with decently high standards. An achievement I am quite proud of.
10. I. NEED. TEA.
11. Going back to POrtugal for my Easter Holidays and cannot wait! Anyone who wants to meet up note me or something to see if it can be arranjed. OH! Let's have a devMEET!

Decent Update

I just spent over one hour submiting some work and getting rid of some deviations in my watch list. WOAH!
So yeah... I apologize to my watchers for this flood of submitions, but this was the first chance I got in a while and I'm amking the most of it. I still have quite a few dozen shots to go over... and that's just the Lisbon stuff!

I don;t have that much prep (aka homework) this weekend and that makes me happy.

I got "Cidade de Deus" and "Y Tu Mama Tambien" to watch but I can't because I'm in a boarding house and the younger kids might just walk in and knowing how these things go, they'd walk in at the worst possible moment.

Exeat next weekend! HOORAH!

I got straight 1s in my progress review (which is like straight As)

I tried writing a journal for my birthday, but when I clicked the preview button, I lost everything and couldn't be bothered to write it all again, so I just "meh"d and went away.

Sixth Form Drama next term.

Last Thursday (Nov. 1st) I had a shoot with Johanna. not the funnest, but definitely the most professional. These shoots are helping me a lot, I have less fear of asking my models to do stuff. That makes me REALLY happy.

Thinking of getting a new lens, but I don't know wether to get something with a better telephoto end, or a wider end. Telephoto is really good for portraits and sports (I photograph a few house games), but wide angles are good for urban & landscape shots (did quite a bit of urban in Lisbon and there's quite some good chances in London). I'd like your opinion on the matter.

Also, should I talk to my photography teacher about organizing some sort of exhibition and print sale to help raise money for either charity or new equipment? Do you believe that to be possible?

... about my male models (two). They were the only ones who put any restriction to the use of the photos. I can't put any of them here! Darn...! I think I'm gonna work exclusively with girls for a while. They allow me to use the pics in a context that gives me critique and stuff.

Vou pa Portuga-al!!!! Saio de inglaterra no domingo a tarde e chego a Lisboa mais ou menos as 5. =] Vou falar com pessoal para ver se ha algum Devmeet que eu possa ir.

Sorry for the Portuguese blabber. I've had like 3 shoots up 'till now (organizing people here is HARD, 'K?) and one of my future models is sitting beside me. I have to select a few shots to put here (if the model lets me, one of them said no)

I'm gonna be VERY busy for the rest of the year. I looks after kids doing homework on mondays, make sure a specific kid does his homework everyday, have house drama, am about to go work at a retirement home, have sixth form comittee, 4 higher subjects (I'll probably drop one by the end of term), squash on wednesdays and photography on tuesdays and thursdays. I think that's it.

Man... I liked my css here.

People around here are so... good. I don't mean like saints or anything like that, it's just that they're all either extremely smart and/or really good looking. Makes one feel all blegh!

I've got to catch up on my reading...

I can't access my e-mail from this school 'uter! So no Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, MSN, Myspace, Facebook, Hi5 or anything in between! I'm kinda surprised I can get here! School looks like it's gonna be hectic so I HAD to delete pretty much every thumb in my watchlist and most of the journals (I peaked a read in a few...)!

I feel really bad and I'm truly sorry!

It's really frustrating when you get a fresh batch of subs but can't use them... *cry*

On a good note, weather's been good and I've already got a new cell number. I'll find a way of giving to people soon enough.

there is something alluring in this shot... from the tones, to the lighting, to the models' faces. I'm just drawn to it.

I just really like this because the Atlantic Puffin is one of my favourite birds That and the composition is quite good.

First of all, thank you *Gisellenw for the Subscription. Now I'm learning how to pimp up my journal I'll ba making a few updates on this while i figure out the coding (#csshelp here I come!).

Edit:I got another month-long sub. This one is from ^PurpelBlur. YIPEE.
Also, to see this css in the best way possible, You should get a font called Eurofurence [link] . It's pretty cool and probably has numerous uses in graphic design and photography/photomanipulation (maybe eveb more areas!). I used this for the logo in the header.
