I have gotten a few new images into the gallery, and more are coming. Most of what goes up over the next few days will be shots of local historic buildings, cemeteries and other interesting bits of local history I have uncovered on my walks around town. For those who do manips or other art, and are interested, a number of the cemetery and building pics are available on our stock account as well. I am hoping to get out this week if the weather holds and take more pictures. *crosses fingers that the rain stays away for a few days*

Slacking again

I know we have really been slacking lately when it comes to updating the galleries, but there just has not been enough time. Between real life and having to share a computer, we just have not been able to sit down and devote hours to updates the way we would like. I am going to try to get some pics up this afternoon and evening if everything goes right. Some old stuff I forgot I had, or just never got around to uploading, and some pics we took over the last few months. Nothing major and not a huge update, but at least it will be something new.

The Plague

Obviously we haven't been around much lately, in spite of our intentions. Most of this is due to two factors. First, there just hasn't been time to spend online lately. Second, for the last few weeks everyone here at the house has been suffering from the "plague" in one form or another...colds, allergies, flu, tooth problems and ear infections to name a few of the lovely things we have been hit with. All of which decided to pay me personal visits over the last three weeks. Feeling a bit better now, though still rather weak and light-headed and occationally getting that nice spinning feeling going, but it's getting a lot better then it was. Anyway, just letting people know that we are still alive, just not exactly up to par and not at a place where we really have the energy and motivation to sit down and spend any time in front of the computer. Hopefully we will be back to normal soon. I know I for one and really getting sick and tired of being so damned sick and tired!

Sorry this is almost a week behind schedule, but I have been having some serious issues being able to log onto DA. For the last week I can barely get past the log in page in under five minutes, and when I do get into the site it has been moving slower then molasses in January in Alaska, and I haven't been able to get the features done before now.

Since we have not done a feature in so long, I decided to go ahead and select 10 images from each catagory rather then the usual 6-8. So here are this weeks featured images...

Now that we have had a chance to renew our subscription, we are going to return to doing weekly journal features. Each week we will chose a theme and select between six and eight images reflecting that theme from each of the following catagories...photography, digital art/photo manipulation, traditional art and stock/resources. These features will be included in a special journal entry and will remain as a feature in the journal for 7 days.

In addition we have set up modules on the side bar of the journal page in which we will be showcasing a Photographer, Artist and Stock Provider of the Month. We also have a space available for the promotion of contests going on around DA, so if anyone is having a contest or knows of one that they think we should feature, please feel free to drop us a note.

New photos are going to be coming soon. I have been working my way through all the photos we have taken over the last 3 months or so, but it is slow going as we have only one computer that currently runs photoshop, (which I use for editing, cropping, framing and watermarking photos for uploading to this gallery, in addition to my manipulation work for my art account) and I have to share that computer with Rob, and that means photo editing and manips must compete for time against World of Warcraft, and guess which one usually wins that battle?

You got it...it's NOT photo editing or manipulation lol.

But I have gotten a good number of pics ready to upload and should be able to get that started in the next day or two. The weekly journal features should be up Monday afternoon, so keep an eye on that little empty box down below.

I finally got some free time to sit down and sort through all my photos...well at least the ones that I still have copies of. We suffered a fatal crash of our back up hard drive a few months back that caused us to lose over a years worth of photos. Last years vacation, all our concert and event photos and the photographs I had taken for our friends wedding, amongh others. Thankfully I had just completed editing on the wedding photos and gotten them burned to CD and passed on to the bride and groom a few days before the "crash and burn" occured. So while I no longer have copies on hand, they at least got them and were very happy with the final result. Thank god for that bit of luck. I don't even want to think what would have happened if I had lost those!

Anyway, some new photos are coming. Due to the amount of stuff we lost, much of what gets uploaded over the next few days will be a bit random. A few photos from here, a few from there etc. I have plans to do some shooting of some of the local attractions, more cemetery photos and a set of pics of some of the historical homes in the neighborhood, so those will get added as soon as I am able. Also hoping to do more on the Nature VS. Man's Trash set, when I get the time. Anyway, thats all for now. Going to upload a few more pics and then off to bed for a few hours before I come back and do some more updating.

Please ignore any and all oddities, randomly appearing and disappearing favorites and collections, folders etc. I am in the process of doing a bit of late spring cleaning on all our accounts. I want to get it to the point where all my artwork favorites and watches are found on my art account, all photography favorites and photographers are linked to this one and the same for the stock account. I will also be editing and rearranging folders and their contents on each account. So for those who suddenly see a mass of favorites or watches come their way from one of my accounts over the next few days, just ignore it. Under Pressure!

Well I am doing my best not to panic at the moment. A year or so back one of Rob's then co-workers and his fiancee had me take some photos of their daughter for them. Afer seeing them and some of my nature photos, the lady of the house decided that when they finally got around to getting hitched, they wanted ME to be their wedding photographer! Ummm ok. I told her I am hardly a professional photographer, barely even above a novice here. But she insisted that she wanted me to do it. Well I tried for over a year to get out of this thing, but it seems that it was all falling on deaf ears there. So this saturday this amature photographer with the low end cameras is going to be the offical wedding photographer for this couple.

Ummmm no pressure right??????

I had hoped to have more time to spend here on DA the last few months, as I wanted to do a major updating on all our accounts, but it seems that real life has a way of jumping in and changing your plans when you aren't looking.

I want to apologize to those who have commented and fav'd over the last couple months. I did not intentionally ignore you all, I just didn't get a chance to spend any real time on DA and reply back or send out a thank you.

I am hoping to be able to do a bit more around here this week if everything goes right (*crosses fingers*), and maybe I can finally get some of the million pics I took this year added to this account and our stock account as well. Right now I am trying to wade through my inbox and clear out the thousands of messages and new deviations that are clogging it. I am trying to get to at least some of the galleries on my watch list today and attempting to collect some new favorites. There is just so much that has gone up while I was away, and so much of it that is really impressive, that it is going to take some time to check it all out. So if I should do a bunch of and runs on your gallery, please don't be offended at the lack of comments. It's not that I don't have anything nice to say, it's just that I don't have the time at the moment to do more then a generic "Oh I really like this" and that's almost as bad as not saying anything at all. Heck, it might even be worse in some cases.

Anyway, with any luck things will start looking a bit more lively around here very soon.

Racial Equality in Stock???

I have a problem I am hoping someone here can help me solve. Years ago I wrote a series of short stories, and awhile back I was tossing around the idea of trying to do photo manipulations depicting the various characters featured in those stories.

The problem I am having is that the characters I want to depict came from a wide variety of racial backgrounds...white, black, asian, middle-eastern, native american, hispanic etc., and I realized that while there are literally millions of stock images on DA (and believe me I have seen more then I can even count), I have seen very few, if any, model stock images featuring people who fit into most of those groups.

I did find a few Japanese or Chinese female models, but that was about it. I really was rather surprised given the number of members DA has, and the huge number of stock providers, that I could not seem to find a more diverse ethnic representation among the models.

Maybe I am just not looking in the right places, but I have done hundreds of searches and only come up with a handful of images. And to me it just seems pointless to create a manip depicting a character who was a middle aged african man, or an young Indian woman and so on, while having to use caucasian models. Depicting a woman of Indian birth and ancestry using a blond haired, blue eyed woman in a sari just doesn't have the same effect at all.

I was hoping that someone would be able to help me in finding some good quality ethnically diverse stock images that do not require me having to purchase the rights to the images, as at the moment I am beyond broke.

So please, if you know of any great stock models who fit the bill, let me know. As much as I love all the wonderful stock providers I have seen so far, and many of whose work I have used in my manips, I would really love to have a wider ethnic diversity represented, not only in my own work, but in the work of others.

I really don't see that much in DA outside of some of the photographers galleries and the occational art pieces, and given the fact that DA members come from every corner of the world, and from every ethnic background imaginable, I find that fact to be rather surprising and very disappointing.

Back from vacation

Well we are officially back home in Florida after a two week vacation. Now we just need another two weeks to recover. I swear we were on the move the entire time. There was just so much going on, so much to get done, so many people to see etc., that there was really next to no time to actually relax and just enjoy the trip.

But we did manage to take over 3,000 pictures.

I am just now getting started sorting the pics, but I am posting a few of them as a bit of a preview of things to come.

Some of our favorites will end up here in this gallery and the majority of the landscape/scenic shots will end up in our stock gallery.

So stay tuned for more details, both on the trip and on the photos.

Playing Catch Up

Well I am back online and have been trying to get caught up on all the things that piled up while I was away. Tons of emails, blog and journal messages, requests from friends for pictures, manips, and assistance with various odds and ends. In other words....lots of stuff to sort and to do. Things really pile up quick when you are offline for more then a few days.

I still have a ton of photos that have been waiting forever to get uploaded to our stock account, a number of pictures that need to be placed in our photography gallery, and about a dozen manip projects in the works that still need to have the finishing touches put on them.

I also have a lot of genealogy related things that need to be sorted and printed out, and some additional information and documents to locate, before we leave in a few weeks for the family reunion. And then there are all the things that need to be done before we leave for the trip, and the fact that there are still things waiting to be unpacked and put away following the recent move. So I am going to be pretty busy for awhile. But I am going to try to make some time over the remainder of the weekend to finish the new manips and get them up, and get at least some of the stock uploaded.

We will be on the road for two weeks, and there will be tons and tons of pictures being taken. Which reminds me, I need to buy additional batteries and another memory card for the camera. Something I said I wanted to do about 3 months ago. Still not entirely sure where the trip will take us. We are sort of playing it by ear. We know we have to be in Pennsylvania the day of the family reunion, and there is talk of going to Hersey Park the next day. So a few days in PA, as well as plans for Washington D.C., Savannah and a few other stops that are still subject to change.

I often take more then 1,000 pictures a day, so you can only imagine just how many pictures there will be to sort through at the end of a 2 week vacation! Oh well. Hopefully there will be some great ones and I will get them sorted and posted somewhere before the next family vacation lol.

The bad thing about taking so many damned pictures is that it takes forever to sort through them all and decide what is worth posting. Anyway, this is the token update. Well yesterday I spent some time trying to do a bit of updating on our other galleries. I have really been neglecting them lately, even worse then I have this one. So I decided it was time to at least make some token additions.

Our stock gallery now includes 19 "new" additions. A few months back I picked up some old photos (c. 1930) that someone had brought into one of our local anique shops to sell. They had an entire box of old family photos, vacation photos and vintage post cards that they were clearing out and wanted to sell off. I would have loved to have gotten the entire box, but it just was not finacially viable at the time. Not if I wanted to eat for the next month, pay rent etc. So I only grabbed 20 of them. They were from a trip to Italy that took place back in 1930. I put them up in the stock gallery thinking that maybe someone else on DA could get some use out of them as well. I plan to go back this weekend and pick up more if there are any still available. Luckily for me, the lady that runs the shop said that not a lot of people who come in are really interested in old photographs, so I may have a good shot at still finding them there.

I also added a few pics to my art gallery. Two simple manips I did awhile back of a couple of my rose photos for myself and my sister-in-law to use as backgrounds for our online journal pages, one older piece that I had done well over a year ago that had managed to get lost in the many cd's here, and was just rediscovered last night, a piece I was playing around with based on a story idea that was bouncing around in my head for months, and one brand new piece I did last night when I got bored and couldn't find anything else to do with my time.

I still need to get the rest of the pics from the street painting festival uploaded here, and I have a bunch of other photos that need to either go up here or in the stock account....mostly landscape, textures and wildlife photos. But first I have to get a background completed for a friend's website, and then I can get back to working on DA.

Oh, yes. There is a new addition to the household here, though we are not sure yet if it is permanent. Last night at work our room mate managed to capture a cat that has been seen wandering around near the gatehouse she works at for a few days. Beautiful orange tabby. Neutered, declawed boy who is a little lover kitty when it comes to people, but still doesn't think much of the other cats or the dog. So far no one has reported him missing, but we are looking into it and need to get him to the vet to see if he has been chipped as well. If no one comes forward to claim him, there is a good chance that he will end up being "spoiled kitty #6" in our house.

Damn DA!

Well I have managed to get around 20 pics uploaded today, not without issues though. It seems that every time I click "submit deviation," at either the beginning or the end of the submission process, I am presented with a page that informs me that DA is performing site maintance and that I should try again in 5 minutes. Now as far as I can tell, there has not been any actual maintainance going on at the times I get this, and a simple refresh or two of the page shows that whatever I was doing at the time did in fact take. It's getting really annoying to have to go through that 4 or 5 times for every single image I upload. It is taking me twice as long as normal to get anything up in the gallery and it's starting to tick me off.

On the plus side, at least there are some new images getting added!

I have been trying to add pics all day, and managed to get a few up when DA was willing to cooperate. I have a bunch of pictures from the street painting festival last weekend that I want to upload. A few are already up, and more will be added later today. Also a new batch of pictures from another suspension show (also last weekend), and a bunch of wildlife and scenic pics taken over the last few months.

Sooooo....as long as DA is willing to allow me to do so, I will be adding as many new pictures to the gallery as I can.

And now off to get myself some dinner. (Yes it is 2 am at my house and I am having dinner. And yes that's about the normal dinner time around here lol)

So I went back to that Photobucket page I mentioned in the last journal entry. When I browsed through it for a bit last night I found a number of DA pieces, as well as works by Ruth Thompson, Brian Froud, David Delamar and dozens of other artists whose work I know on sight.

So today I picked a random gallery by this person, in this case the one labled "Nature." Now mind you the Nature catagory is a relatively small section of her overall album. Some of the sections have close to 3,000 images in them. In the first two pages of the nature section alone (which covered only 80 images out of the 353 uploaded to it) I came across the following DA pieces. I have sent notes to the artists in question to let them know about this. Anway here are just a few of the DA works I found.

I am starting to think they should just rename it "Rips 'R Us."
We have an account there that we use to store some of our photos, and awhile back I had been browsing through other people's albums and came across a number of pieces that had been ripped from various artists I knew, both on and off of DA. I was just over there again and doing another one of those "I am bored and need something to kill time" searches. I swear every other piece of art I am finding seems to be something I recognize, and much of it comes straight from DA. Not all of them are nice enough to leave the actual file name attached to the image, but a lot of them have. Which makes it pretty damned easy to trace back even those I am not familier with to the original artists. I have been dropping notes to people here as I come across their work on photobucket, but there is just so much of it that I doubt anyone could ever find it all. Funny though that not only did no one appear to have ripped anything from our various accounts on DA, but I can't even find my public ablums on photobucket in a search lol. Not sure why that is, but at least it appears that no one has an interest in stealing from us so far, unless they are hiding it in private albums, which I really doubt. So anyway, don't be surprised if you see a note or two from us over the next few days letting you know that someone over at "Rips 'R Us" is posting your work for all to see and make free with as they see fit. Just browse photobucket or myspace if you get bored and I am sure you will see something you recognize, maybe even something you yourself photographed or created. Gotta love the internet and people's respect of copyright law huh?

Well cross your fingers and wish me luck. I am going to be trying to update our gallery here this afternoon. It seems the last few times I tried to add new photos, DA was feeling a bit twitchy and irritable and refused to allow me to submit any new work to the galleries. After trying with no success for three days straight, I gave up and haven't done a damned thing in weeks. I am hoping that whatever was causing the problem is not going to be an issue this time and that I will be able to get a lot accomplished over the next day or two. We have tons of images that we want to put in the gallery...the usual nature shots, some pics of the new puppy from hell and a bunch from a suspension show a friend and his group did on Halloween among other things. So here's hoping DA cooperates today. Hell here's hoping DA actually allows me to post this journal for that matter.

Annoyed and sick

Well I am annoyed. It seems that lately DA has decided that it hates me. It doesn't seem to want to let me update the galleries, tries its best to prevent me from posting comments or journal entries, constantly insists that it can not display pages, even has gone so far as to repeatedly tell me I do not have permission to view a page whenever I attempt to make additions to my watch list. On top of all this, I have been sick as a dog for the last week and a half and feel a lot like a dead woman walking at this point. Needless to say the last week or two have not been the best I have had.

As soon as I go cough up my last remaining bit of lung, I will see if I can get DA to cooperate with me for a few minutes and try to add some new pics to the gallery.

Sort...Edit...Upload...Whine....Upload

Well here I go again. Back to work on the galleries. At the moment I am trying to sort and catagorize a million and one photos that we have taken over the last year, deciding what to keep, what to trash and what should be added to DA. Once I decide what I want to put up here, then comes another debate as to whether or not it will be going into the photography account or into the stock account. Then there is the actual time involved in uploading all those images. Not to mention that during all this time we are continuing to take more pictures, which will also have to be sorted, catagorized, disgarded, uploaded and so on.

Days like this I have to keep reminding myself that I do this because I love it and have fun doing it. At times it seems more like an unpaid job then a hobby. Of course that doesn't mean I am about to stop taking pictures or doing manips. I just have to remember to allow myself time to relax and just enjoy taking pictures or working on a new piece of artwork or I run the risk of suffering another of those major burnouts where I just have no desire to even look at someone else's work, let alone create anything new of my own.

The other thing that sometimes gets me down is something I have been talking about with others here in DA recently. It's the simple fact that if you are not one of the extremely well known "Popular kids on the block" where DA is concerned, or if you don't upload so many new items to your gallery every day that you remain on the top of the search pages, most people never find your gallery. We have images that have been up for months that have never even had a single view, let alone a comment or . Sometimes I wonder why I even bother to put up anything new if no one is ever going to see it. Sure I take pictures and do manips because I enjoy it, but at the same time it's nice to have other people see what has been created, to have them say that they liked something or thought that doing a bit of this or that would have made something good into something even better. If no one sees a piece, how will I ever get an outsiders honest opinion of what I am doing right or wrong or where I need to improve techniques? It gets really frustrating and depressing at times. Yes I can keep doing this forever and never have anyone see my work or comment on it, but sometimes a lack of input or encouragement just makes me want to give up entirely and take up some other hobby....like knife throwing or needlepoint.

Personally I am leaning toward the knife throwing. Needlepoint is just too "girly" for me to tolerate for long.

Anyway, back to work on the photos.

*sighs*

I think I am going to need more coffee.

*And yes I know that the tag I am placing on the photos says "Devil Kitty Designs." Until I get a chance to make new tags for both this account and our stock account, I will be using the old watermark/tag. Devil Kitty Designs, DKD-Photography & DKD-Stock are all one and the same anyway, just three accounts to fit three different needs.

Well after saying I was going to do it, but never seeming to find the time, I finally got a chance to update the gallery a bit. 22 new pictures added, with a few million more to go. Have to take a break for a bit though, because if I don't get back to work on a Halloween background for the man of the house I will never hear the end of it.

Well we did it again. We now have three accounts, one for each type of thing we do.

One for Stock, one for Photography, and of course the original for Manipulations.

Damn this place/hobby is habbit forming.

Any how here's to getting the ball rolling for getting ÃÃ©vil KiÂÂÂ¥ ÃÃ©signsÂ all the way off the ground.
