Way back in February, dA admin $chix0r told Vampirella87 personally that tracing from existing artworks with minor changes (background, colors, etc.) isn't allowed in dA.

Vampy, who always plays it safe by staying within gray areas and tries not to get into trouble with mods and admins decides to step down and take her plagiarisms elsewhere.

Not happy with the poor attention she's getting in Minitokyo, she decides to come back to dA and start over.

At first, there was nothing wrong, she was actually posting what seems to be original artworks (drawn using vector).
Everything was fine until...


Vampy saw a rejected violation report for a trace plagiarism and was somehow given the illusion that "screenshot tracings are allowed again in dA".

She then starts uploading one screenshot tracing after another, testing the waters to see if admins are going to take it down.
Because no action was taken, she started uploading screenshot tracings regularly and pretty much gone back to her old self (disables comments for screenshot tracings as well as blocking anyone who exposes her).

However, she should have tested the waters thoroughly before going swimming because she wound up getting swallowed whole by sharks.

Vampy's uploading of screenshot tracings was brought to the attention of the same admin who told her they weren't allowed and before anyone could say "Live Trace", Vampy got banned.


As a reminder, direct tracings of screenshots and artworks not your own are not allowed in dA (anymore).
If getting banned for uploading screenshot tracings could happen to a deviant with subscription and over a million pageviews, it could happen to anyone else.


Finally, if you find a trace plagiarist in dA, please avoid any unwanted conflict and just follow these guidelines on how to submit proper violation reports against trace plagiarism.
I mean, the guys in dA are finally willing to listen to us, so show some appreciation by not inciting any unnecessary drama.


Also, do visit , the one responsible for getting Vampirella87 banned for good and congratulate him for a job well done.


UPDATE:

This just in. Vampirella87's old test account, !Genkishonen has been banned.
Reasons for the ban is unknown.
I suspect that an admin closed the account instead of her closing it herself.
Otherwise, my message informing others of her 'main account' being banned would have been hidden.

Two more accounts to go.

UPDATE:

Vampirella87's other two accounts, !Vampyslinearts and !Onikyou has been banned.

There are suspicions that ~LithiumChaos is a sock-puppet account of Vampirella87 but I can't confirm it.

1. Don't Ever Flame The Deviant Posting The Traces

In fact, don't bother talking to them at all about what they can or cannot post here in deviantART.
Chances are that they have their own justification on why their traces should be considered "art" and posted alongside your own hard works.
It will be like talking to a Goddamn wall.
If you must say anything to them, ask them the source of the traces, which will make the next few steps easier.


2. Report The Deviation

You should know right now that deviantART does not allow traces unlike last time.
The reason why you still see "vector traces" of official animation artworks or screenshots is because these deviants are unaware of the rule change, just like how we were unaware that tracing was allowed last year.
Remember that reporting requires you to provide proof and links to back up your claims.
deviantART also removes traces that have minor edits, such as color changes.


3. Find Evidence For Trace Plagiarisms

You will need to find the source of the traces.
Sometimes the plagiarists are smart enough to use an unpopular artwork that they are sure that nobody will find out.
Sometimes, they are kind enough to let people know the source of the trace by linking back to the actual screenshot/artwork used.
You can also make use of Tineye to search for traced artworks.
Tineye is a search engine that allows you to find images online by using an image as the "keyword", so you can either find the image's source or variants.
Be warned that it's not always successful.
I was only able to find the source of a trace once using this.
It gets harder if the tracer uses a screenshot instead of a still artwork, since screenshots from an animated show means the tracer picked one out of thousands of frames in a single episode.
You can also ask a friend if he/she can help provide the source screenshot to be used for reporting.


4. Use Overlay GIFs To Maximize The Success Of Your Reports

When I say "overlay GIFs", I mean this.
100% of the time, my trace reports are successful whenever this is included in the report.
In fact, the trace seen in that example was also taken down.


Because deviantART has listened to us and stopped allowing trace plagiarisms, we should do them a favor by not inciting unnecessary drama and just use the report button they provided.


UPDATE:

Despite following the above guidelines, there is a sudden increase of people complaining about their reports returning as "Invalid", even with evidence provided, even with overlay GIFs.

Here is the automated message that appears in the reply:

"A member of staff has reviewed this report and has found that while there may be cause for some type of concern no actual administrative action will be taken because this report was made by an interested third party rather than someone directly involved in the issue.

We would prefer to hear directly from the owner of the work so that any doubts may be eliminated."


If they don't care about what an "interested 3rd party" says, why bother putting a "Report" button that any deviant has access to, then?
I think this is ridiculous because it means that as long as the original owners don't do anything, trace plagiarism will remain on deviantART.

In other words, deviantART is slowly reverting back to what it was last year, allowing trace plagiarism.

I have posted a message about this to an admin. If you have anything to add, please do so.

We all know that's just a shitty excuse of his to fill up his own gallery with other people's hard work.

1. No matter how popular the character is, don't assume that I know about them. Please provide complete references.


2. "Providing references" is not dumping a couple of screenshots. If you want me to faithfully draw the character, give me decent quality artworks of the character in multiple angles that shows their designs properly


3. Please don't give me thumbnail-sized references. If you don't want your character's magic wand to look like a dildo in the commission, give me artworks which properly shows the characters' appearances, costume, hairstyle and accessories.


4. If the character's wearing something like a jacket, shawl, coat, etc. I need pictures of how the characters look like without the outer layers of their costume. The same if the character's wearing a hat or mask. I will need references on how they look like without those.


5. If it's a character from a 3D game, I prefer 2D concept art of the character, rather than their 3D renders (especially if it's an in-game screenshot). A lot of the characters' appearance are "lost in translation" when rendered, which is why I prefer 2D concept art.


6. Model sheets are the best. If possible try to get these, especially the colored ones.


7. I am aware that it will be difficult to get your hands on decent references, especially if that character is unpopular but please try your best.

Of course, he didn't really take those photos himself and just snagged them off the net (just like what he did with LOZ's artworks).

deviantART has allowed tracing from screenshots of an animated series, so shit like this (source) and this (source) are considered "legal" on dA and won't be removed even if you sent a violation report with evidence provided.

Here's a link to the article where tracing is green-lighted.

"...this means that if someone copies or traces a screenshot from their favorite cartoon the staff will be more forgiving..."

It's funny that their previous statement about tracing is still up, causing confusion to those who read it.

I don't know if these people are trying to pick a fight with the "DID community" but it seems that if you try to search for "anime" & "bondage" together in the deviantART search engine, vector traces from two users, Vampirella87 and Drayden will show up in the "newest" results.

The screen cap traces that appear in the search results doesn't seem to have anything to do with "bondage" at all.

I feel that they're purposely trying to clog up the results and make it harder for DID fans to look for DID stuff while making it easier for people to find their shitty trace "artworks".

I don't know if this is considered an 'abuse' that can be reported to deviantART.


Anyway, this "Drayden" seems to be a Vampirella87 clone.

You can tell by how he also blocks comments on all his deviations and how he also adds "bondage" as tags to his vectors.
They seem to be the only tracers doing this.

And seriously... is this even a vector?

The reason you never see any guys tied up in my gallery is because I am not interested in drawing those in my free time and despite me actually offering to draw male bondage in my commissions, nobody ordered any.

As you can see, this whole fetish works both ways. It's not exclusive to guys.

I'm sure if you go look for "bondage" in the search above, you'll see a lot of guys tied up too, drawn by girls.
You don't see me barging into their dA, telling them that they're being sexist to tie up guys do you?


Just in case you don't know, I never draw:

Sushix123 isn't a leecher or anything like that but I put him up there because he was spamming several accounts with some "challenge" to draw stuff.
I consider that leeching and put him up in the list.

If there're any other people I should block, please let me know.

However, I won't automatically put them up in the list. I will check their comments to other artists thoroughly first before deciding if they're leechers or not.

Basically, it means that I completely don't know the order anymore. I only know the next two commissioners but after that, I don't know who's next and how many people. For now, I can only look through my emails, private messages and dA notes and check the dates they were submitted to reconstruct the list and the order (NOW you know why I told you guys to never write out your commission instructions on MSN Messenger).
