I should have written this journal for quite a while but never found the time to do so. As you may have guessed, I've been rather busy lately, mostly because of tons of homework and exams coming soon. That means I haven't had a single second for art lately, even less for commissions. It should be over by December 18th, the end of my exams, but until then, don't expect to see anything new from me, sadly. I'll make sure to finish my commissions as soon as I can and draw lots during my holidays, promise !

Procedure for commissioning me :

  • Send me a note describing what you want me to draw so we can discuss about it, and the price

  • When the subject is discussed, I draw a rough sketch of the commission

  • If there are changes to be made on the rough, tell me at that point so I can modify it

  • When you find the rough satisfying, send me the payment (through Paypal only)

  • As soon as I receive the payment, I start working on the final artwork

  • When the artwork is done, I send the full size artwork (in png format so there is no quality loss) and upload a small size version of the artwork on my gallery

Other important things to read and keep in mind :

  • That should be quite obvious but since I had a bad experience before, I have to mention it : write in comprehensive english ! I really shouldn't have to decode what you want to say. Messages that aren't written in plain english will be simply ignored.

  • Similarly, I shouldn't have to decode what you want exactly, so try to be as clear as possible when describing your idea, visual references are very welcomed as they will make things easier for me (and eventually faster).


  • Another very important fact to keep in mind, it takes a freakin' damn long time for me to work on commissions ! Firstly because I'm no professional so I need time to do things well, secondly because my speed is considerably influenced by how inspired I am at a given time, and finally because I'm still a student and thus I can only work on commissions on my spare time. Asking me for a "how long this will take" is pointless and will often result with a "don't know" answer.

    So, I'm currently working on page 1 of the prologue - actually a second version of page 1, but that is anecdotic. More accurately, the framing and dialogs are done and I'm in the sketching part of the page (a page being made in several steps : framing, sketching/adding dialog, lining and coloring/adding FX).

    There are several issues that will need time to get the hang of :
    - Giving more variability in the "camera settings", which includes angles from which I'm not used to draw characters, and the according perspectives
    - Perspective in backgrounds. I'll have to find something less problematic than switching several times between Photoshop and 3D Studio Max.
    - Indoor backgrounds - I just do shit when it comes to designing indoor backgrounds. But I guess that's just a matter of habit. Until then, I guess I'll have to use reference, or improvise.

    And more like notes for myself :
    - For later, I think about working more on the special effects, such as depth blur and blooming.
    - For now and forever, restrain myself from drawing bare b00bies every single frame. Big issue. (But there WILL be b00bies anyway. Period.)

Still, that was refreshing (the heat from the West Indies aside), mostly for my art. I've been able to finish my commission for Argo, which was (sadly...) the only one on my list, my commission list is once again empty, so I'm all the more open for new commissions.

    Now that I'm back, I'll spend some time looking at all the deviations I couldn't see before and commenting where it's needed, gaming online (which I haven't been able to do at all for a few weeks), and keep working on Metaworld. I hoped I would have been able to show you a page or two of the Prologue for when I'd be back, but I haven't been able to finish a single one. I've got roughs for 11 pages, though, but it will take time to work on them, especially since I'm not perfectly sure on how I will handle the lot of backgrounds I will have to draw, and perspective more generally. But I'm confident I'll find a way out. At least the story is fully written (or, at least, on my mind).

    I'll write another journal soon as soon as I have well recovered from the trip. Until then, happy holidays to everyone !

    edit : I noticed that the artworks I drew while on holidays were especially bright, because of the fact I worked on a laptop that didn't have the same brightness settings as my desktop computer, so I reuploaded part of them with corrected brightness.

    I finally finished the last request I had in my list (except for a gift for my buddy Riezaki, but it doesn't count =p) Still, I must say that I probably won't be taking requests anymore in the future. First because most of the requests I've done so far were not very interesting to do ; or at least I didn't feel as enthusiast when working on some of them as when I work on my own artworks. Some of them were really interesting to do, though, for example Argo's one. A second reason would be that requests are much time-consuming, and that I tend to take a lot of time to do them. A lot of time that I can use to work on my own projects and artworks, or just doing all sorts of things with my free time. And I always tend to feel guilty for making my requestors wait for too long.

    Commissions and art trades : definitely open

    Since I'm all done with almost all the artworks I had in my list, I'll confirm that I'm completely open for commissions, or art trades (for which I still haven't given a try, so I'm wide open if anyone's interested).     For those who read my last journal which is now deleted, well... screw that. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, it was all about KaiRoshi's contest ([link]) in which I participated. The voting is now being carried on. Basically, the contest involved his original characters and bondage. Since there was money involved, the participation was pretty high, even more since KaiRoshi gave one more week for the last contestants to finish their work.

    With my entry [link] , I tried to go the "unusual" way and avoid getting in the old clichés of bondage : close-to-naked girls (since nudity was forbidden anyway), big b00bs, wide-spread legs, and close shots of asses or crotches. I added Felicia later because of the previously mentioned added week, which brought many more contestants than I had expected in the first place.

    Anyway, by making an entry that lacked all of that "turn-ons" side, I was kind of testing the voters. And the results of this test are coming as clear as pure water. My entry is getting a low number of votes. And you wanna know which entries are getting high votes ? I won't even go in the detail of entries of high-pageviewed artists (which are logically bound to get more votes from their fans) and entries that didn't follow all of the rules but got accepted anyway. SO, the entries that got the most votes for now involve... Close-to-naked girls. Big b00bed girls. Wide-spread legs. Close shots of asses and crotches.

    Surprised ? Well, somehow, I was expecting it, but I really hoped that somehow the voters would think with something else than their third leg (this only applies for guys, of course ; but I think the whole commentary I'm doing here involves guys in general anyway.). Looks like most of them don't. But I highly congratulate those who judged the entries out of their quality, rather than their wanking potential.

    Reminds me that there's something I've been wanting to tell in a journal for quite a long time, and I've found the will to do it now.

    The Almighty Power of Fanboyism and Fetichism

    Whenever I look at the most popular deviations in my gallery, what do I see ? Fanarts. The most populart Original Character picture appears after a long list of 17 fanarts out of 74 deviations. And I always look at the favourites of those who add one of my deviations in their favourites. Most of the time, it goes like this :
    My Samus/Octopus fanart ? Added to people who have tons of Metal Gear Solid or Zero Suit Samus pictures in their favourites, from the ugliest to the most beautiful.
    A Sailor Moon picture ? You'll see tons of them in the favourites of those who added this one.
    And so on. It somehow makes me feel like my art doesn't import really, but rather what characters I put in it. My original characters don't interest people if they're not half-naked (which is another problem I will tackle later). What fanboys want is seeing Tifa's big boobs, Samus' tight-fitting suit, Mikuru's cute face, Rikku's light costume and I'm far from being done enumerating them.

    But it's not only that. The whole first part of my most popular deviations involve : a frozen Sailor Mars, a Tifa bound by a snake, my deviation for the bondage contest, and countless girls turned to gold or stone. It's exactly the same problem as with fanboyism, but it somehow feels more awkward. It involves fetichism, which involves most of the time some kind of sexual attraction. Sexual attraction, I said. So basically while the artist wants to touch the heart of people, all he does is activating their hormons and make them unzip their flyers.

    Somehow, all of this feels kinda sad to me. But I guess there's nothing to do about it. People won't change. I can't make them change. No one can. All I can do is keep working on my art and hope that sometimes, someone who likes my art for what it really is passes by. I know there are already some of them out there, and I thank them a lot, a deep "thanks" coming right from my heart.

Still got an exam afterwards, but it's nothing compared to all the work I went through lately. I now take the time to relax, play and work on the lot of drawings I had left because of studies. After my last exam, I'll follow 6 weeks of professional training experience, so I guess I'll have time to work on my drawings even then, since I won't have anything to study when I'll be back home.

    On another note, I've been watching Lucky Star lately, and I definitely advise watching this anime. I just can't stop laughing while watching it.

A real addiction.

    Anyway, I feared that my colouring skills might have gone down since I hadn't drawn anything for over 3 weeks... but surprisingly, getting back to it wasn't actually difficult at all. By the way, I didn't exactly do NOTHING during that time, I actually went back to 3D Studio Max, learned JavaScript and worked on Metaworld Project (formerly Disconnection Project). The storyline is slowly progressing, and I'm thinking about preparing a website.

    ...but I hope I'll have the time to do all of that.

    Still, there is a problem, because things can't always go well. My mother's computer, on which I worked on during the holidays, has decided to malfunction 3 days before coming back ; Windows doesn't want to work right now. My father will try to make it work again, but until then, I won't be able to recover the data I put on that computer, which includes the requests and commission I've been working on. That shouldn't be long before the computer works again, but I had to point that.

    Apart from that, I've got a lot of sketches (one or two dozens...) to work on, so expect many updates in the next weeks.

    Random Facts :



    So, after a long lack of inspiration, I'm back to the scene, but not for long, since I'm going on holidays Saturday, for two or three weeks. I guess the change of atmosphere (and lack of Internet and consoles, too) will re-fuel my imagination, so I won't forget to take my drawing tools with me so I can keep practicing. I don't know yet if I'll be able to take my tablet with me, but if I do, then I might have some pictures to submit in my gallery when I come back.

    Before that, I'll try to finish colouring as much drawings as I can for :iconalexdemitri:'s encasement contest, which has been extended to July 31st. For those who don't know about it, the theme is encasement (or put another way, the complete immobilization/objectification of characters), which include, for example : petrification, freezing, ice emprisoning, doll/mannequin transformation, card transformation, and a lot of other transformations I probably cannot imagine. I've liked Alex's style for quite a while, and that's a theme I've always loved for unknown reasons, so I was just bound to participate.     Since I've been working on this contest a lot (well, when my drawing skills weren't incapacitated...) (and by the way, working on a theme really does fuel imagination), I haven't had the time to tackle the commission and request I had been asked to do, but I haven't forgotten them. I think I'll finish them during my holidays, so I guess I'll be open for other requests, commissions or such for when I get back. Don't hesitate to send me notes about it (if you have a specific idea, don't hesitate to put it in the note ; just in case I could access Internet at least once during my holidays, I might begin thinking about it and sketching), and I'll answer as soon as I'm back. About the prices for commissions, I don't have time now to fix them, so I'll see when I get back, but I'll try to keep it in the same margin as the other artists of my (moderate) level.
