Has the Twilight saga drasticaly changed the way people perceives what a vampire should be like?

Have you refused to pick up a series, book, movie or comic just because it has to do with vampires and you're tired of the concept?

Do you think the rising popularity of vampires will water down the concept even more or will it strenghten them?

If you were a writter/director/artist creating a vampire themed story, would you feel the need to incorporate elements from this saga to make your story more acceptable and true to the current concept of vampires, write the story you want and stay unattractive to the mainstream media, or drop the whole theme and write something else?

How much do you think it'll take for vampire literature to go back to social critique/erotic-gothic horror?

And most importantly, what has your own opinion of vampires come to be, and how has it changed since their recent rise in popularity?

What I have to say, well, seeing Blade and Blood Ties being pulled from TV to give Vampire Diaries a chance, people in Requiem/Masquerade games trying to incorporate cheesy romantic elements and werewolves, the next Castlevania dropping the gothic vampire-theme for a Tolkien-esque feel with apparently no Dracula being present, and the awful reaction to vampires becoming a strong tribe in Magic The Gathering even tho they have always been fan-favourites in the game...
I think from now on and for a good long while, everyone who wants to use vampires in a fictional work is fucked.

"Ahora si que me separo de ustedes por pocos años en edad, pero lamentablemente en ideologia parece que estoy a siglos de distancia.
Son muy pocos los de ustedes que me escuchan, y muchos menos los que me comprenden, mi generacion, la de los que andan entre los 28 y los 21, es una generacion de gente muy preocupada por el tiempo, de gente con cierto y muy fuerte miedo al final de las cosas y que no permite que se le acaben, gente necia, terca y cabrona que sigue lo que desea aunque le cueste sangre y lagrimas y se aferra a sus proyectos y a sus pasiones con una fuerza que ya no veo en ustedes.

La que sigue es a la que ya muchos estan apodando "generacion 0", y lamentablemente se caracteriza por una apatia y una desidia infundada, gente emocionalmente fragil que esta demasiado asustada de actuar, o simplemente no le importa y lamentablemente esa generacion es la que deberia impulsar los movimientos sociales de la proxima decada y ya vimos los movimientos que han salido de esta: El emo; cien por ciento autocompasivo, autocondescendiente y cobarde. Y el reggaeton; irresponsable y anti-intelectual, carente de razon o ideologia y autodenominado "del pueblo" aunque sus representantes se atavien de joyitas y lujos solo comparables por su desden al "pueblo" del que dicen ser parte.

Yo soy de la generacion que vio nacer a Linkin Park, a Marilyn Manson, a Korn, que si bien no fueron The Clash o los Dead Kennedys, dieron a mi generacion el animo de gritar, mandar las barreras del letargo que nos dejo la generacion plastica a la verga y tomar accion. Vi lo que los criticos consideran el final de la era rockstar con "Play" de Aerosmith y "All That You Can't Leave Behind" de U2. Lamentablemente tambien vi como cuando todo esto paso de "moda", el canal que en su trayectoria de hasta entonces 20 años se pudria desde su centro disminuyendo al maximo el contenido musical y las criticas sociales para dejar entrar lo vacio de los reality shows, vendiendo al morbo, y lo violento y ultimadamente egoista del mundo del nuevo rap, haciendo anicos toda la hermandad que habia existido desde que Hendrix quemo su guitarra, toda la tolerancia que habia existido desde que Mercury, Elton John y Morrissey revelaron su caracter sexual, y toda la independencia que nos habian ganado Ozzy, Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses y un largo etc.

A mi me toco ver morir a MTV.

Y con eso, ver morir la unica esperanza que habia en el mundo de popularizar filosofias que contrariaban los intereses politico-economicos de la sociedad en control.
Los adolescentes siempre buscan ir contracorriente, es los 80's escuchaban punk, en los 70's escuchaban disco, en los 60's escuchaban jazz y los adaptaban a su epoca dando vida a nuevos movimientos, pero ahora, por primera vez, hasta los mas "alternativos" se estan atascando de comerciales, se han vendido y hasta su individualidad se a regularizado.

Individualidad sobre todo, eso era antes, sin embargo ahi entramos a otro problema que nos ha dejado la media actual: los "raperos", que de raperos no tienen ni a su puta madre por que no es rapero el que vivio como unico abuso el que sus papis no le dejaran ver la tele hasta tarde de niño, sino el que se enfrento a la autoridad hasta la muerte y aun muerto gano, como Tupac que no dejo de rimar hasta su ultimo aliento. No, eso ya no existe, pues quien haya estado ahi para ver a estos "brothers" en su esplendor, sabra que eran justamente eso: hermanos. No, estos nuevas figuras crearon una ideologia de desconfianza e individualidad violenta, de bandas y peligro que se esparcio gracias a que eMpTyV vio a gente como 50 cent como minitas de oro por el hecho de que los records criminales y altercados con armas de fuego venden mas que cualquier cosa que te haga pensar. Se vende miedo y desconfianza y la necesidad de pertenecer para sobrevivir, no sin antes claro manchar de violenta e intolerante a la vieja individualidad, la que no te exigia ser ni pensar como el conciente colectivo, la hermanada y tolerante, siempre blanco de calumnia y temor, justamente la ideologia punk.

Como pues, se puede demostrar a la gente que el debate no es conflicto y que la gente diferente igual puede convivir en perfecta armonia, que una maquina perfecta es la convinacion de mecanismos imperfectos, no la segregacion de materiales por sus diferencias?

Well, I have a piece of advice for you, 2012, judgement day, the end of times, and all that spooky language... is crap.
The world is not going to end, and judging for the fact that every year more and more people beat the 100 years old cap, we're going to be here for quite a while. I am 21, that means that I have a 70% chance to live another 65 years, and I dont want to go on with my life knowing about all the things I could have done to make this world a better place but didnt, because "it wasnt my problem".

So, now that you know you'll probably live a hundred years, why dont you look out your window and pick up something you can do to make that what you see, to look better?

Valeria Saetiel

1 She loves butterflies.
2 She really loves the flavour of blood, unlike other vampires who drink it cause they need it.
3 She has had a special interest in blades since she was little, and playing with knives was how she discovered she would heal wounds.
4 She loves hiking.
5 Her healing factor is not limited to tissue regeneration, her body automathically regenerates from fatigue, sickness, stress, poison, etc. This, however, gives her trouble sleeping and keeps her ever hungy.

Rafael De Alborada

1 His father was a cattle rancher, he didnt wanted to follow the same line of work so he started traveling.
2 He is afraid of depths.
3 His real name is Ruy, but he changed names constantly during his journeys.
4 Tough he is basically immortal due to his curse, he is extremely careful and picky with what he does because he doesnt know when or how the curse could break.
5 He is meant to be a vampire, but unlike cainssons he has no "vampire birthskills", his regeneration ability comes from his curse.
6 He plays the violin.
7 While he cant die, he can experience mental breakdowns, shellshock and such stress conditions.
8 His first ship "The Arrow" was destroyed by the ship he stole to rescue it, that began his pirate career.

Grigoire

1 He is from one of the very few kinds of vampire that is damaged by sunlight.

4 He lived in the sewers under a bookstore, from where he got a good amount of his knowledge.

My comment: This was one of the first pieces to be entried to the contest, and its really awesome to tell the truth, the colors, the clothes, the textures and the background are awesome, her anatomy is very close to what i do with her, the only critique i have of it is that she looks a lil bit too much like Natalie Portman while Valeria's more of a Kate Beckinsale kinda girl, my bad i didnt said that before the pic was done

My comment: She looks gorgeous to say the least, steve is a very talented painter of whom i'd be very glad to see much more, however some of my judges felt his piece didnt look so much like it was intended to be Valeria, and more like it was an accidental lookalike. In my opinion she has all the elements to appear as my Val, but its kinda true, if i saw her out of nowhere i wouldnt really pick her up first thought as Valeria.
Nonetheless, the quality of this piece is amazing.

Valeria is a vivacious 19 year old vampire living in the late 16th century Bohemia. She lives among the Romia (gypsies) as their leader's adoptive daughter, the Romia's princess.
She is a natural adventurer that spends her time exploring old castles and ruins while deffending her people from grim monsters and their ilk.

-RULES-
In order to participate in the contest all you need to do is complete these 3 simple steps:

1.- Make a Pin-Up using Veleria as the central theme, she must be wearing the same costume as in the reference pics, weapons can be changed at will or not used at all.
The use of different props, backgrounds or aditional characters is free to the contestant' consideration.

2.- Submit your contest entry to your DA gallery or scraps.

3.- Send me a note with the link to your submitted contest entry before September 10th at 23:30 central time.

Would you like to lend me a hand ]]> ~DarkmasterUndertaker http://DarkmasterUndertaker.deviantart.com/journal/9696356/ http://DarkmasterUndertaker.deviantart.com/journal/9696356/ Fri, 11 Aug 2006 21:57:54 PDT The goal here is to stop the main enemy: Aelos Dumas, in his campaign of domination and destruction, and to do so the protagonist will have to go across the 25 free-roaming enviroments that compose the wolrd map while fighting the hordes of creatures along with savage animals and mindless wild creatures that have been summoned by Dumas as you enter his fortress set on a fantastic place that isnt ruled by time and space.
May this be not enough, the amount of collectible items and sidequests to complete give you the posibility of concentrating on getting more weapons or better equipment may you ever grow bored of the fights, or may you be interested in being better equipped for them.
The amount of puzzles and restrictions that need of certain abilities to be completed force the player to explore every area of the game looking for clues and experience to solve these barriers and continue the journey, unlike other games, the puzzles wont be solved on-screen for the player like in other games, the player will have to solve them with Valeria's abilities and the clues that may be given.
The protagonist, even being a beautiful woman, is not directed to the male audience but to the female part instead, being the kind of chracter you would find in an action shojo manga rather than the action game vixen, her interaction with other characters will be important as well, she needs the information she may get to solve some puzzles and some characters have a special importance such as Jackeline's shop for goods and equipment.
In order to fight against the enemies that will spawn to stop her in her journey Valeria will have her own fighting skills along with five different weapon kinds, rapier, armblades, polearms, sables and long-swords, these all have complete movesets and even two or three sub-styles in order for Valeria to have all the possibilities she may need to fight any kind of enemy that may get in her way.

In resume, the game has fighting mechanics in the likes of Soul Calibur and MK: Deception, puzzles with the complexity of a Zelda game, exploring and investigation in the likes of Tomb Raider's, special abilities and equipment setting similar to Kingdom Hearts', monsters and enviroments in the Castlevania tradition and original characters in this action/adventure story set in a fantastic victorian goth world.
