I know this is not specifically a question related to art, but I'm sure it is one that we are all familiar with.

I reject animal cruelty and I do my best to avoid products tested on animals. I was reading through several websites recently, trying to find 'ethical' alternatives to common products, and all I discovered was confusion, anger and misinformation. I never realised how much of a spectrum of different positions there are on what I thought was a fairly simple thing. Having read through all the mire of data on the subject, I've come to the conclusion that setting oneself the goal of TOTALLY ethical shopping is destined to failure.

Modern life and commerce are suffused with so much complexity and connectedness that it is impossible to say that any specific product is 'cruelty free'. It all boils down to how you define an ethical product, and what you consider 'taints' a product as associated with animal testing. If company 'A' manufactures a product and as part of its safety approval, they perform or sanction the performing of animal testing, then it is clear that product is associated with animal testing. Let us now consider company 'B' who produce some products tested on animals and some that are not. Are the products not tested on animals sufficiently 'tainted' by the other activity of that same company as to invalidate claims that a specific product is 'not tested on animals'. Can a potentially 'ethical' product be unethical just because it is produced by an unethical company?

Do you believe that the reason for boycotting a product is to encourage a company to change it's practices, or is it a simple personal choice and has nothing to do with changing the world?

Almost all of the basic ingredients for health and beauty products have at some time in the past undergone animal testing, either individually or as part of a finished product.

Let us imagine for a moment that we are setting up a hypothetical company with the goal to manufacture ethical products. We use a specific ingredient as a component in one of our products. We know that the manufacturer of that raw material we buy does not carry out animal testing. We subsequently discover after years of trading that an unconnected and separate company using the same raw materials has recently tested that chemical on animals. What kind of philosophical position does that now put us in? Can we no longer say that all our ingredients are'not tested on animals'? This is just one of hundreds of difficult potential scenarios that complicate this judgement. For instance, when L'Oreal took over Body Shop, did that invalidate the ethical stand that was previously maintained by Anita Roddick?

The fact is that I don't know what to do. The more I think this through the more confused I become. The only way to totally avoid anything tainted by animal testing is to take the 'Amish' philosophy and never to buy any finished products, but make all your own from scratch.

Where do you stand on this? Would you boycott an entire supermarket chain because they sell both ethical and unethical products, or would you shop there and just select the ethical alternatives? Would you stop using the Body Shop entirely just because they are now owned by L'Oreal?

As soon as you choose to go down this road, it brings up a bewildering catalogue of questions that all really come down to 'how far do you take it'?

I've been putting my pictures on dA for two years now. I'm very happy to be part of this vibrant and talented community. It pleases me very much that people enjoy my pictures and express appreciation. For the most part it has been a very positive experience and I have few regrets at getting involved, but there are however some things that sometimes cause me to review my decision.

I have discovered that so long as I keep fairly quiet and I don't step outside my circle of like-minded friends, my dA activity is valuable and inspiring. I also know that whenever I have ignored that rule, I have regretted it bitterly. It is easy to forget that all human life is here, both good and bad.

One thing that bothers me more than anything else, is the lack of control we have over the presentation and context of our images when they are displayed in other members favourites and collections. Don't misunderstand me; I do like people to favourite my work, but as I said before, there is all human life on dA and sometimes our work can end up in collections alongside pictures that (although they might comply with the dA guidelines) are of little artistic value. I speak (for example) of those poorly executed close-up shots of genitalia and those artless dawbings and scribblings we have all seen and try to avoid. There is nothing we can do to prevent the possibility of our carefully and thoughtfully executed work ending up in a collection mixed-in with all that garbage. There is also nothing stopping a dA member taking one of my art nudes and putting it in a collection entitled something like 'nice tits' or 'hot babes'.

Am I being too sensitive? Should I just close my eyes to it? Are the positive aspects of dA enough to compensate? I just don't know.

Whenever I post art nude pictures where the model's face is hidden, cropped or out of frame, I get mixed responses. Generally the comments from female deviants are very complementary and the male responses although positive they quite often complain that the model's face is not on view.

The gallery exhibition will then run for a month after the opening. The Show opening will commence at 5pm at Beaumont Hall Studios, at which time, members of the press, art-world and public will be invited to attend the launch.

Artists are asked to submit up to five of their best representative artworks to this gallery exhibition at a cost of £20 per artist. Every piece proposed for exhibition will be featured on the “Aphrodisia” Exhibition website. Selected artworks will also be hung in the show for the duration of the exhibition (proceeds of any artworks sold will go to the artist with a commission of 20% towards Beaumont Hall Studios and the Guild of Erotic Artists). Artworks will be selected for inclusion in the exhibition by a panel, and will be chosen to represent quality and variety of style, content and genre. Artworks should be sensual/figurative in nature, items considered to be pornographic will not be considered for inclusion on the website or in the gallery.*

Existing Guild Members may submit up to five artworks at a cost of £3 per piece.

(For deviantART members who have read this article via my journal and are not able to attend in person, I am willing to take the responsibility for hanging/positioning artworks myself, provided artists are happy to ensure the safe arrival of their art.)

About the Guild of Erotic Artists:
The Guild of Erotic Artists was formed five years ago, as a platform to encourage and support erotic art and to promote tolerance and freedom of expression. The Guild's membership extends across the globe from the UK to Europe and the USA. From this non-profit making movement of motivated artists, the Guild has grown steadily over the past five years.

Artworks range from oils, pencil, watercolours, life casting, stone and bronze sculptures, photography, stained glass and much more. The first shoot was at the Dune du Pyla (sometimes seen spelled 'Pilat') and was a re-visit for me. I was a little concerned that it wouldn't be as good as the first time I shot there 5 years ago, but I need not have worried. The sun shone, the dune was beautiful, and so was the delightful ERosanne.






Second on the list was a drive through the Pyrenees and an overnight stop on the way to a town devastated in the Spanish civil war. The site is almost as it was when the town fell in 1938, with rubble in the streets and houses blown to bits. Shooting there in the early morning overcast sky and drizzle was quite emotional. ERosanne was moved to tears at one point while we were shooting in the roofless and battered skeleton of one of the two churches on the site.





After the morning shoot we headed south towards another location previously 'scouted' by ERosanne. Due to miscommunication with the satnav gadget (nicknamed 'Cheryl') we went a little off course and ended up 1600m up a mountain in a blizzard. Despite being four degrees below freezing ERosanne was very keen to jump out into the snow and be photographed nude. After a couple of miles we found a spot to park and a pile of snow-covered logs to use as a background.

If ANYONE is still in ANY doubt as to the ownership of these images, please read the following account of what happened here:

These photos were taken back in 2003, and have been in circulation since then. They are a signature image, widely recognized as my work, and also available as a poster-sized print.

[link] on the model's website along with the rest of the series. ALL taken by me and uploaded in 2003.
The image was also published in the Guild of Erotic Artists Volume 1 [link] (book released for publication January 20th 2005).

The COLOUR version of this and another image was stolen from ANOTHER WEBSITE (probably one of the ones listed above) some time prior to Feb 2005 by another dA user and uploaded to his profile in Feb 2005.

I joined dA in Feb 2007, and uploaded the MONOCHROME version of my own image to my profile. (I also possess the COLOUR version, available on all my OTHER WEBSITES, and in the book, but chose to use a black and white version on this occasion. My prerogative).
The image was reported for copyright violation and deleted, at which point I became aware of the other user's profile who had stolen the images from me. This happened three times before dA FINALLY accepted that the image IS mine, and always has been.

It appears to me from several comments and emails that there is a widespread assumption regarding the provenance of images on dA. It is (unsafely) assumed that if an identical picture is submitted by different users at different times that it is absolutely CERTAIN that the earlier submission must be the genuine one. This is clearly untrue as it makes several wrong assumptions. It assumes that images are only ever uploaded to dA and nowhere else and that pictures are only ever stolen from dA galleries. I think this case proves that the association of earlier submission date with attribution of copyright is completely unsound and muddle-headed.

This saga has now been resolved (I hope), and the image is proven beyond all doubt to be my own. I hope this account will satisfy anyone who STILL has the audacity to question my ownership of this image. I am very disappointed that it has taken this long, and I have had to go to so much trouble to prove my innocence, when it was obvious to most people that the image is and was mine all along.

Thank you to those who have supported me. No thanks to those who failed to get their facts straight or use their common sense.
I hope this is the last I hear of this unfortunate incident, and perhaps dA will apply a safer and fairer system in the future, one where the accuser of copyright theft is named, (at least the accused has a right to know who is making the claim) and one without the unsafe method of linking of earlier dA submission dates with copyright provenance. More than anything else, admin should just take a quick look at the galleries and journal of those involved and allow the accused to put forward evidence in a counter claim before the image is removed.

This image is one of my most popular art prints and is a signature image that I've been using on my business cards for years. It is very cheeky for them to delete it claiming it belongs to someone else.

I don't take well to being accused of stealing. When I got the note from devart I was enraged almost to the point of pulling the plug on my DA gallery completely.

Anyone who knows my work at all will instantly recognise this image as mine. If you are a friend/watcher who knows my stuff, please back me up on this.

Thanks for your support both public and private. I have even had communications from people apologising for not offering public support for fear they might be victimised or harassed in retribution. What have things come to here, that such a situation could exist?

Yesterday was interesting. I worked all day on clearing some of the backlog from my desk then delivered a package to Camden. Following that I met some friends at probably the wierdest cabaret night I have ever experienced.

This morning I finally came back to my house at 8am only to be mugged as I came in the door by a phalanx of hungry cats.

Now the 5 feline residents are sleeping off thier full bellies and I'm musing over comments on DA. Honestly, I should be doing some REAL work but DA is calling to me...

I have a huge number of art nude images in my archives, so if there is a style or subject you would like to see featured here, the chances are I have something that fills the bill. Just drop me a comment or a note and I'll go down to the dusty old basement and have a rummage around for them.

I'm particularly interested if you want to see more underwater work

When I joined the Deviant Art community just over a week ago, I had no idea of the sense of community to be found here. I just wanted to say thank you to all of you who have commented on my work. It has lifted my spirits and given me the energy and incentive to go out and create more pictures.

I really felt welcome here right from the outset. I tentatively posted a few images last week and was instantly deluged with messages and comments (mostly complementary I was pleased to discover). I hope to continue posting here daily if I can get online, and I look forward to reading your reactions.
