Surprisingly alert for this late at night.  I may make it, at this rate.  13's turning out to be a good page.  I'm pretty happy with the dialogue I've come up with on the fly, so far.

We've moved into the second hour, now... Everything's going fine.  I got the first 3rd of my pages thumbnailed.  Lots of chatter going on around me, but I'm not really participating at the moment.

The story's starting to gel, but it'll be a challenge to finally get it down on paper.

The 24 hour comic challenge starts at 11:00am this morning at Austin Books and will run until tomorrow at 11:00am.  And I'm up freaking 4 hours before that because I keep dreaming about working on the damn thing and waking up going "whudafugg?"  I finally gave up and got up completely.

A month ago, I assembled a team to enter a movie contest hosted by the Alamo Drafthouse here in Austin, TX.  The challenge was that they would assign each team an animal and a vehicle... to spoof Snakes on a Plane.  The movie had to be between 2 and 5 minutes long and include the line "[blank] on a motherfucking [blank]".  After many many long nights, we completed it and have uploaded the file the the blanksonablank contest site.

So, now that I've outlined my thoughts on both Japanese and American comic books, I'd like to bring my ideas together and talk about the medium as a whole.

Jim Lee and friends broke new ground in the American comic book market in the 80's and 90's by creating much more dynamic layouts.  But his books consisted of 70% hero poses.  And the writers filled the panels with dialogue.  Lots and lots of dialogue.  So we have books of the heroes striking a pose (which means a still shot, no movement).  And a ton of exposition.

I mentioned manga, last time, and its distinguishing features.  Now we'll talk about why manga reflects these features.

For a while, I felt that the Japanese really had a leg up on these books because of their higher level of consistency, creative action scenes and crazy panel layouts.  But mostly because the creative team saw the books all the way through to the end.  There was an end!

They were all right.  Somewhat entertaining.  And since they didn't mean anything to me, when a friend offered to trade me his old Iron Man and SpiderMan comics for those goofy kids comics, I didn't hestitate too long.

That's when TRULY discovered comics.  Wow.  I was floored, and I wanted more.  And more than that, I wanted to make my own.  But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't reproduce the same quality of work.  But I did get better.  Slowly.
