        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ So you've probably seen the recent pencil sketch posts for a project I'm involved with called "Lunatics", being created by a guy I know named Terry Hancock.  I'm happy to be part of the project because the guy's an animal.         <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ My work on The Retriever is finished.  Well... nearly.  I finished the last two pages of the final book, "The Search Part II" this weekend and have posted them up.<br /><br />I say 'nearly' because next week, I'll be posting up all of Book 0 in case you missed it.<br /><br />Then.... then it will be over.  5 years and 160 pages of work.<br /><br />I'm not sure I'm completely happy with how it turned out... I don't even know if it ended up even making any sense.  I was totally just trying to finish everything up within as few pages as possible, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was completely crap.  I apologize for it if it is.  Perhaps, someday, I'll go back and clean it u ]]></media:text>

So for those of you who don't know, I entered a comic book contest a year and a half ago and placed 13th (my favorite number, incidentally) out of a field of over 100. This guaranteed me a spot in book 11 of the publisher's anthology series. Unfortunately, it never got printed.         <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ The Retriever book 0 is finally available from Dimestore Productions.<br /><br />Remember that long drawn out Small Press Idol contest from last year?  I put together a 12 pager along with a lot of other competitors and managed to get a high enough rank to find it published in one of the publisher's anthology books!  It's packaged with two other strong competitors, Kensuke and Arena, both full of sharp, well paced action.<br /><br />Book 0 is a flashback in Jackson Lau's life, a look into the original motivation for what he himself is looking for.<br /><br />Currently, the book is #6 on Dimestore Production's sales site.  I'd like to see it higher in the rankings!  You do ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ So I left the shop about 20 hours into the ordeal.  A few people were left (about 10, I think), still working away.  I would've stayed, if I had more story to tell, but the length of the thing capped out, surprisingly, at a sparse 17 pages, so I just went ahead and turned that in.<br /><br />I think what I ended up with was quite strong in terms of plot and pacing (the things I'm best at) and weak in the artwork department, as usual.  Weaker than usual, of course, due to what turned out to be a ridiculous pace.<br /><br />So tips if I decide to do this again... Include working on 8X11 instead of 10X14.  Maybe work even looser?  Is that possible?  I think it is,  ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ Okay, this is nearly an hour late.  Sorry.  Someone borrowed my computer and I was deep into page 13.<br /><br />Surprisingly alert for this late at night.  I may make it, at this rate.  13's turning out to be a good page.  I'm pretty happy with the dialogue I've come up with on the fly, so far.<br /><br />We've had a few more people drop out and it's obvious most of us won't make the deadline.  I don't even know if I've got enough content for a full 24 pages.  I think I'll just wrap up the story whenever it wraps up and that'll be that.<br /><br />Hopefully it's somewhere CLOSE to full length.  20 pages at least.<br /><br />We'll see.<br /><br />I'm still coherent! ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ Sorry for the delay in getting this particular installment out... Was busy launching my web comic site.<br /><br />So, now that I've outlined my thoughts on both Japanese and American comic books, I'd like to bring my ideas together and talk about the medium as a whole.<br /><br />Jim Lee and friends broke new ground in the American comic book market in the 80's and 90's by creating much more dynamic layouts.  But his books consisted of 70% hero poses.  And the writers filled the panels with dialogue.  Lots and lots of dialogue.  So we have books of the heroes striking a pose (which means a still shot, no movement).  And a ton of exposition.<br /><br />Although it might b ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ My first web comic foray has gone live!  Finally, at long last.  Yes.  The Retriever follows the adventures of Jackson Lau.  If you've lost something, he'll find it and bring it back for you.  But what you've lost may not be the best thing for you to get back.  Inspired by the legend of the Monkey's Paw and my love of irony in storytelling, the book explores the darker side of the Kung Fu genre... something I'm affectionately calling "noir-fu".  I had been posting the previews here on DevArt, but they've been heavily edited since then, so please, even if you've seen it here, check out the site for the updated, edited versions of the book.  Th ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ I started out reading superhero comics, fascinated by the action and color.  But during and after college, my interest waned.  I became disillusioned by the repetitiousness of the books, the neverending resurrections, the overblown dialogue, the reused characters.  They were like soap operas.  And I felt the medium wasn't being used to its full potential.<br /><br />For a while, I felt that the Japanese really had a leg up on these books because of their higher level of consistency, creative action scenes and crazy panel layouts.  But mostly because the creative team saw the books all the way through to the end.  There was an end!<br /><br />Superhero books just ]]></media:text>
