Going back to England tomorrow. I absolutely hate packing and travelling. It takes so much time and makes me a stressed little creature.
But on the other hand I'm really looking forward to going back. (: It's awesome to see everyone again and I actually miss our quiet and peaceful house already.

It's also going to be a busy busy month with school work. I need to work real hard to get everything done in time. Hopefully everything goes as planned!

Only six more days before I'll take a flight to Finland for the holidays. I'm looking forward to it but at the same time I feel a bit sad not seeing my awesome class mates for a while. I've gotten too used to going to uni every day and seeing the same people and having great time. Though I can't wait to see Frankie and Fonzie, my two stupid dogs, again! It's going to be so much fun taking long walks with them and listening them snore when they sleep next to me taking all the space in he bed. Ah, I love those two idiots so much. <3

School work wise.. busy. I'm a bit behind with work cause I pay too much attention to details and make mistakes. But I'll be fine! I'm sure of it. Just need to work harder. (:

Been animating lots of walk cycles lately and I have to say that it's really hard work getting everything right! Animal walk cycles are especially hard cause well.. duh.. four legs are harder to get to work in a rhythm than two. This was my first time animating animals walking as well and I've learned alot. It's been extra funny/wierd animating a pig walking away from the camera as all you can see is this round bum swaying in front of you.

Hopefully everything will go well with the film. I'm a bit worried about getting everything done in time but I've never let myself miss a deadline so it won't happen without a fight this time either. Rrrr!

I've also been trying my hands on sculpting and managed to create a quite good-looking female torso but ruined it by leaving it stand on its legs before it was dry, resulting to having a nice upper torso with reeeeeally short and fat legs. Haha.

I've been feeling really happy lately. Things seem to be going very well and there are lots of wonderful things happening around me. Nothing really big but just many small things in my every day life that make me want to wake up to each new day with a wide smile. No seriously, that's how I feel at the moment!

And it's great.

School's going well, class mates are awesome and my new apartment is great. Things are so much better than they were before summer. I felt really depressed all the time back then and felt like going from one difficult situation to another. Funny how so many little things can change everything. (:

Back to England with a brand new apartment (meaning I've changed my address again) and housemates and a whole new year of school ahead.
This is going to be my final year studying the bachelor's degree in Animation Arts. After that I'll try to apply to study the Master's degree somewhere else in the UK. There's one really good school I've been thinking about but I'm not sure if I'm skilled enough to get in. We'll see.

We just started a new film project as well. I'm gonna do an animation about a girl with a blushing problem. I've found personal stories to have more depth and usually being more interesting than other stories so I'm planning to do the story about my personal experiences, though, without placing myself in the protagonist's shoes.
I'll start a project blog about my school stuff in one of these days and will post the link here once it's ready. (:

And what else? I quit being an administrator/moderator at the Finnish BJD forum a couple of weeks ago cause I was about to lose my sanity with it as I used too much time and energy into taking care of the place and the people. Now I have much more free time to concentrate on other, more important things and don't have to worry so much stuff. It was hard to let go of a place that you've been building and developing for years but there'a time and place for everything and now was time to let go of that job. I'm happy I did even though it was something I enjoyed alot.

Tomorrow to London. A school trip to visit galleries. Don't know what to expect really but it's nice to go there with the class. (:

Don't know if I'm happy or sad or both. If I could move my family, friends and our sauna to England with me I wouldn't have to feel sad when I leave. Or even better! If I could move our school and my class mates to Finland? That'd be much better to be honest.

I'll be visiting the Comic Festivals this weekend and will have birthday party with my friends during my visit. (The actual day is on the 18th so we'll have the party a little early.) It'll be so much fun. Cake and dolls, laughing our heads off and being idiots.

I've been able to travel quite a lot this summer, thanks to the new law that gives Finns studying abroad the right for student prices when traveling by train or bus. I've been to Desucon, Anime/Finncon (where I finally got to meet ~Sadyna!) and have traveled around Finland with my family.
Overall it's been a fun but really stressful holiday as my dad has been sick from the beginning of the year and it just got worse during the summer. We took him to a special hospital this Monday cause his condition is making the whole family tired of worry and we really want to find out what's wrong. :\

At the moment I'm trying to think about what to bake for the party on weekend and how awesome it's going to be tomorrow when we go to the Zoo for the Cat's Night event to see big cats. Aaand.. I'm trying to forget that I'm ridiculously scared/nervous/stressed about one stupid thing. x_x

I'm going to Lahti tomorrow with my sister and her boyfriend to attend DesuCon. Am really looking forward to it! We have reserver a hotel room for the three of us and have a full list of stuff we want to see and do during the 24H of the con.

Very sweet short film that made me smile. I love the characters and how pretty the animation was.

I've always loved *RachelCurtis' character designs. Maggie's must be one of my favourites as she seems like an interesting character. Love the colours she chose for Maggie's clothing.

It's so hard to pick my favourite ones out of ~Sadyna's gallery. ;_; I love her use of colour and attention to details. Edward Scissorhands is beautifully done picture as well. Edward's hands looks great. The blue background with the snowflakes creates a simple but beautiful feeling to the piece.

Argh. All those details are just killing me. x_x Lovely colours once again. The masks on the background make a nice detail.

Interesting character design! I like the pose. Looks great in black, white and grey.

Great idea! I love the fact that pink was the main colour used for this one. (: The composition is also great.

I love this trio of hers! And they look so adorable in this picture. The picture looks so full with all the details on the characters and the texture things on the bg.

I just realised that my favourite works of Woodoo's have textures or some cut outs on the background. o_o Her style seems to rock with bg:s like that. Oh, and I love the dog. ;_;

_{It has been a normal holiday for me.. meaning I've spent way too many days being sick. I'm never sick when I'm in England. I can remember one time when I coughed couple of times and thought it was a joke and that's pretty much it. But every time I come home I'm bound to catch the newest flu or illness that's been around here. This time I spent 4 lovely days either sleeping on bathroom's floor or on the sofa (or running between those two) thanks to vomiting. I haven't had a vomiting disease since I was 10 or something and I've got to admit it was an extremely interesting experience. Am glad am okay now though..

But because of that I haven't had time to do anything I was planning to. I was planning to photograph dolls outside, animate something for school and this week I was supposed to visit my friends in Helsinki but couldn't really do any of those while laying on the sofa/floor and hoping to live to see the next day. Oh well.. next time then. :\

Now I'm trying to catch up with the stuff I was supposed to do during the holiday for school but for some reason my brains are only capable of making me draw funny pictures of eohippuses ( [link] ). I've been meaning to study drawing that creature for ages but that little mouse in my head (you know, the one who runs in the hamster wheel to produce energy) decided the time is now.}

_{Finlaaaaaaaand! Tomorrow! Yeeeees!

I feel so great. It seems like all the hard times are finally beginning to be history. It has been one hell of a beginning of a year. I've been really worried about my mental health during all these months and at times felt like I just couldn't take anymore bad stuff. But the Finnish Sisu ( [link] ) kept me sane.

And today, when I was walking home I realised that I'm probably back to my normal, utterly cheerful self as I kept on laughing out loud on the street because I went to buy these funny looking dog donuts for my doggies as a souvenir and imagined how funny and adorable Fonzie's ( [link] ) cheeks will look when he eats them. I must've looked really mad laughing all by myself and holding the dog biscuits.
My teacher also kept mentioning how I've been smiling alot lately.

Can't wait to see my stupid stupid stupid doggies tomorrow!
Oh yeah, of course, my flight goes to Helsinki and as I couldn't get a flight to Vaasa so I need to take the train to SeinÃ¤joki. And oh boy, a whole bunch of friends told me they'd come pick me up from the airport tomorrow and take me to the train station. ;u;

_{Whyyyy!? ;_; I've been wanting to thee the Walking with the Donasaurs live experience show ever since I saw the first photos of it and it turns out it's coming to the UK in July-August while I'm most likely still in Finland. And it's coming to Finland on Novemeber when I'm in the UK!

So I'm seriously wondering which would be an easier one to arrange.. travelling to England for couple of days and going back or to Finland for couple of days. No really.. I'm actually considering these options! My school won't probably start before mid September so it would be dumb to move back to England that early when I could still spend time with my family and friends and go to work to earn money.

_{Have been working on my film. Its working title is "The Happy Owl".
You can see the first page of the storyboard here: [link] "owl8.jpg" is the last page. I'm going to change the story a little. Especially the middle part as I'm not happy with it. People have been telling me that this one is surprisingly sad story to be mine.

I was recording the narrator voice today and I had to use my own voice. And oh dear pony, how terrible it is to have your own voice on a film even if it's only for the rough animatic! Though I managed to find some hilarious clips from the audio footage. I was laughing my ass off when I was listening to this part: [link] I'm trying to say "pretending" which isn't a hard word at all but I was under pressure and obviously trying too hard. Haha. I guess Finns will find the clip funnier than others though..

I'm really excited about this new project and can't wait to actually get my hands on it! After the previous project is fully finished I can spent all my time on this one.

I practically live at the studio nowadays. I go there everyday and come home to continue school work and go to sleep. Some days it feels like I only come home to sleep and then go back to the uni. X) But I like being busy! Keeps me from thinking negative stuff too much.}

_{I've got a 3000 word essay to do about identity and the self in visual and textual culture. I've read loads of stuff for it and should start the actual writing soon.

We need to decide the topic for our 3rd year's dissertation too and so far it seems mine is going to be about how does the gender of the author affect the characters and stories they write. Or something like that. It may change but I'm sure I'm going to do mine about gender roles in comics and/or films or about comics for women. Those would interest me the most.

At the moment I'm working on a storyboard idea for this 10-week film project we're about to begin. It needs to be a personal story and it can be about anything and done by any tehcnic you want. And it's pretty hard to come up with a story when the only limitation is that it should be a personal story. I mean.. the case with me is that I have a head full of ideas but don't know which way to go with them when there are no limitations. x_x
But yeah.. I think I have a story I like now. Just need to finish storyboarding it!

Aaand.. I received my Peter and the Wolf DVD yeasterday. I found out about this awesome looking stop motion film a week or two ago and was absolutely amazed of how pretty it looks! Damn, I want to make something like that someday! All those details and animals and and and! Anyway, I got the DVD but.. here's the problem. I know I have lots of work to do SO I shouldn't be watching films. So I'm fighting the urge to watch the film and keep it as a prize for myself when all or at least some of the stuff that needs to be done, gets done. x_x Pure torture!}

_{The new deadline for our documentary animation was yeasterday. I feel so relieved now that it's on DVD and handed in. I was going to upload it on my server too so that I could show it to the people I've been talking about it lately but the third years had a whole day workshop in the studio so I couldn't access the computer which had the stuff to make a quick time movie. :\ Next week then!
I gave myself a permission to feel lazy yeasterday after I got home too, resulting for me taking a two-hour nap and then waking up and talking a little with friends online and then going back to sleep and waking up almost 12 later. Rest well deserved I guess! I feel full of energy now.

-Spoiler warning? Maaaaybe?-
Went to see Watchmen yeasterday with a friend after handing the film in. It was..ok? I don't know! I'm not probably smart enough to understand why the Dark Knight and now Watchmen are so great movies? They're very different from other superhero movies and probably a real treat to people who have been fans of the comics for a long time. But.. there was just so much going on and no-one was really happy. o_o I don't know.. The reason why I want to be a film maker is that I want to be able to create something that will make people happy or atleast make them smile a little while watching it. So dark movies don't really go well with my ideas I guess? I'm just childish like that.
But don't get me wrong though! It's not like I can't take movies that don't end with people living happily ever after! I mean.. Edward Scissorhands is one of my favourites and we know how it ends.
But yeah.. dark movies aren't just my piece of cake.

Dr. Manhattan seemed like an interesting character in Watchmen though. I liked the tone of his voice. And oh boy oh boy how much people have been talking about him being naked in the movie all the time! I was told that it's really disturbing to see his penis all the time in the movie and was honestly expecting to see some really odd close-ups and perverted stuff that would make me feel uneasy. But no. XD Just normal naked man. Well ok, he was all blue and shiny. But still? Most of the time he was framed so that you couldn't see anything below his navel and when you could it wasn't like the only thing you were supposed to pay attention to. Though.. to be honest I did! Simply because my class mate told me he'd like to meet the guy who animated his blue thing and some girls were talking how disturbed they were the whole 3 hours in the cinema. XD Maybe it's just hard for a Finnish girl to understand why this is such a big deal? I mean.. Finnish sauna?
Don't know, but I find this whole "GASP he's all naked" a bit amusing. X)}

_{I've suddenly got lots of visitors to my gallery. Wonder where all the people are coming from? I mean I've got over 1000 visitors in just couple of weeks! I've never got that many before. Or is it just a bunch of same people who keep coming back to my front page? Haha. Anyways! I'm not complaining here just wondering what caused this cheering up surprise. (:

We just had our deadline for a film project that has been causing me alot of distress lately. The critique went quite well. There are some small things we have to change before we show it on the upcoming festival thing. Luckily they had an open day yeasterday at the uni and I got to go in and edit the film a little more for couple of hours. It was utterly weird to be at the uni on Saturday. It was so empty and quiet in the morning.
I also took part in putting up the exhibition parts at the upcoming animation festival with three other students who all seemed as excited about it as I am. If everything goes alright it's going to be great working on it! I was actually really surprised there were only the four of us who wanted to take part in it. What a great opportunity to gain experience and to work with people! I can even include it in my CV. Maybe the others knew that it's going to be hard work and were smart enough not to take part in it? Don't know.. but I enjoy challenges!

We got to hear more about our next project. It's going to be a 10-week-long animation project and the main focus seems to be in directing your own short film. Which means we can animate anything with any style and technic we want. Sounds too awesome! It's going to be hard to chooce what to do since the possibilities are endless! I'd love to make another stop motion film but wonder if I should try something new instead.

I've been thinking of applying for summer jobs in Finland and at the moment I'm asking around from advertising companies/studios if they would take summer workers. I doubt they have any summer jobs but you'll never know unless you try! Even a short job would be fine.
And I'm also applying for a summer job at an animal park in ÃhtÃ¤ri. I've always wanted to try working there since my other dream job would be to work with animals in a zoo/park and it would be a great experience to spend the summer there (cleaning bear poop).

Anyways! I'm trying to keep myself busy with stuff in order to avoid thinking too much about negative things. It's going to be one hell of a week next week as we'll have a Maya workshop all week + some more editing. Oh boy oh boy it's going to be so much fun! Hopefully I'll have time to sleep at some point too.}

Before I get too excited about the idea of filling this entry with whining about stuff I'll move on to more awesome stuff!
We're going to get this really good tutor all the way from Portugal to teach us to use Maya (3D animation stuff) for four full and really long days. There were only 15 places available to all the three year classes of animation students and we have 24 in the 2nd year alone so I was really worried that I wouldn't be able to get to be in this workshop. But luckily miss Fortune was on my side and I managed to get my name on the sing up list. Oooooh the bestness!
I'm really looking forward to those four days since I've really grown to love 3D animations and would actually be more than happy to be able to work with 3D stuff in the future too if I ever manage to get a job as an animator.

What else? Hmm.. My friend}

is coming to visit me in couple of weeks and we were planning to go visit the Whipsnade zoo near London. They've got hippos and rhinos and elephants! I'm going to take my sketch book with me but don't know if I'm going to draw that much as I'm primarily going there to have good time with my friend.

I'll probably take her to see some awesome London sights too + shopping. Should be awesome.

I think it's interesting to see how people draw! There are so many different ways people begin their drawing. Some begin from the eyes and some just sketch random lines here and there and somehow form a face out of them.

Damn that was hard. I still have to practise alot with my tablet. XD My drawing hand is wayyyyy to shakey even though I've been practising quite a lot lately with the tablet!}

_{There's some kind of a strange connection between me and birds. I seem to somehow include a bird to every single project I've done so far. If the project isn't about a bird/birds there's always one or dozen of them on other parts of the story.
When I was in the zoo, I found it fascinating to draw them and I did spend a lot of time sketching the exotic birdies. I also used to have birds as pets. Aaand one summer I learned to mimic a baby long-eared owl resulting to the mother owl planning to feed me a vole.

Usually I don't even decide that "Hey, I feel like drawing birds!" or "I think I should make a project about birds". It just.. happens. o_o

Coincidence? Maybe.. but this sure happens a lot.}

_{Just wanted write something here to test my new journal layout! And to not make this entry a total waste of space I'll babble a little too.

I decided to go to the London Zoo tomorrow morning and will spend the whole day there drawing the animals. It seems it's going to rain the whole and but Wednesday seems to be the only day when it only rains. Other days it rains AND it's going to be windy. Or so they said yeasterday in the weather forescast. It might change. You'll never know about the English weather.
I've never been to London all by myself so I hope everything goes as planned! It's highly possible that I'll get lost at some point but as long as I have a map on my hand and a mouth on my face I'll be fine. I can always ask for directions if I get lost. Though.. I've been there once so it SHOULD be okay.
I was also planning to do some comic shopping after the zoo IF I have the energy and it's not too late and I haven't completely soaked myself in the rain.

I'm really looking forward to the gorillas. *u* I've been wanting to learn to draw apes and especially gorillas for a long time so this might be the chance to get started. I really want to see an anteater too. As far as I can remember I've never seen one in real life. Last time I visited the zoo the place closed before we could see all the animals.
Hopefully I'll get to draw alot tomorrow and hopefully it's going to be an useful and a fun day! ^_^

Soo.. all deadlines are history for a while now! And next week is a reading week which in other words means free time. I have no idea why we always have this one free week right after Christmas holiday. I get so lazy when there are no school projects to work on.
I just ordered a pile of books and comics with which I can kill time for the next week. It's a _reading_ week after all so I might as well read stuff!

Don't know if I should visit the London Zoo next week to practise some animal drawing. I've got a feeling I really suck at drawing the animal anatomy and I keep repeating same stupid mistakes over and over again.. so it's a time I actually studied real animals again. Other than dogs since I've had a couple of the maround for a while already.

New year, new look! I decided to become a beta tester and try out the new profile page layout. It looks confusing but cool. And there seems to be lots of awesome new features in it. Makes me want to design my profile page to look prettier. I need new ID-picture and new layout for my journal and and and!

Spent quite a quiet New Year's eve. Basically me and my sister sat in silence in the same room and played with our computers and every now and then tried to calm Fonzie, our younger dog, down since he seems to fear the sound of fireworks. Frankie, the older one was calm as ever. He hardly even noticed something funny was going on.

I've been too busy spending time with my family that I haven't drawn anything proper yet. I've been sketching alot, though that's nothing new as I always do it.
I feel like going out and photographing some of my dolls... there's quite a lot of snow here so it's great fun to go outside wearing super warm clothes. The doggies love the snow too~

So. I made a hard decision a while ago. And decided it was time I changed back to being a red head. For those of you who didn't know, I used to have red or pink hair before I changed to the black, red & blonde combo and the style kind of stuck for what.. over three years? And after that long a time it was freaking hard to decide to change the style and colour. x_x I've been thinking this over for half a year now and finally got the courage to walk to the hair dresser.

And since I like to fool around with my camera I, of course, took some pictures too!
And.. it seems I'm afraid to be alone on photos so I forced my dog, Fonzie, to smile to the camera too: [link]

One more day left of school! After that I'll fly to Finland and stay in Helsinki to meet some dear friends of mine.

Sadly, I'm unable to attend the Orivesi meeting because I'm out of time during my stay in Finland.

Sorry guys, it would've been awesome to meet you all after the 1Â½ years that have gone by after we left Orivesi.

In other news! As you've probably noticed, it seems to be an unicornfull time of the year for me. I still need to learn to draw hooves properly, though. o_Ã³ ACtually I feel like I really need to practise animal anatomy more since my drawings of them seem to lack something.

Oh and the British mail has lost my winter coat my mom sent me from Finland. ;_; Unless I buy a new one I'm going to die of cold when I get back to Finland for Christmas.

It's so freaking cold in my room I have to wear three shirts and woollen socks all the time. The radiator/heating system in my room isn't working properly and I'll have to wait a while for someone to come and fix it. ;_; And here I thought I was used to cold weather being from Finland and all..

Am working on my puppet animation's set atm. I've been so stressed about the whole project for weeks that it ceased to be funny a long time ago. Last Thurday saved my life, though! I almost finished my set. And oh boy does it look good of what! I'm so pleased by the way it looks now. Still need to paint a background for it (which will probably ruin everything) but it's nearly done.
My puppet is still missing a hand, hair and some paint. First filming time is on next Wednesday so I'll have to finish it by then.

That's the kind of thing we do before we start filming. It tells us when happens what and how long each scene should last. And since things tend to change alot while planning all the stuff I kept my drawings simple.

Working hard on our school project. I've been building an animation puppet and it has proved to be fun but time-consuming. I'll also build a set full of trees and moss in one of these weeks.

No Internet connection and I've been here since 12th September! Funny how empty life seems without Internet when you've grown up to check your e-mails once/999 times a day. Noo'hoo, I'm not addicted, no.

Anyways. I've spent my time by watching Doctor Who (watched the three first series already. One more to go!) and oh yeah, I had my birthday on the 18th. I feel so very old. Again.

Which.. reminds me that I haven't given my new snail mail address to anyone yet.. Actually.. To be honest, I have hard time remembering it. I bought a scanner-printer-thing and they asked me for my address at the counter.. well.. it was a bit embarrassing to tell them I don't have a clue of what's the address I live in. Go me! That's how you survive abroad. Don't tell anyone where you live! Even better if you don't know your address since then you can't tell it to anyone accidently. Honest, look at me: I've survived over a year here! So it must mean I'm doing everything right.

School is going to start in 15th September. Which is really late and strange. I haven't finished my summer project just yet. It seems everything else interests me more at the moment.

We had to take our dog, Frankie, to vet today since I found out last weekend that there's something wrong with his teeth since two of them were about to fall off. Frankie is only 4 years old so this wasn't very normal for a dog his age and so said the veterinarian too. He had pretty bad calculus on couple of hiis teeth and one of them had to be removed. We also found out that Frankie's got something wrong with his heart and might need heart medicine when he gets a little older.

So yeah.. I'm glad that I can stay in Finland for a little while longer since someone has to take care that Frankie eats his medicine which is for his inflamed gums. I hope he gets better soon. :<

To summarise today's journal entry: I'm spending my last weeks in Finland and spending my time with my beloved and hopelesly stupid doggies and my family.

I might find some time to draw too now that I'm not sick anymore (though my throat still hurts like crazy).

Uh, I've been sick for one week now. I'm slowly getting better but still ache everywhere and cough all the freaking time. Plus my voice is pretty much gone.. which has proved to be the hardest part of this sickness for I've always been very talkative person. ._.

My ~~shitty~~ interesting summer job ended last Sunday and now I'm arranging things so that moving back to England is easier on September. It probably is easier to move this Autumn since I know the places and the people.

We also got a summer project, or actually three of them from which we can choose the one we like. One is about people watching and trying to capture people's personalities into our quick sketches and once we have caught some interesting characters on paper we're supposed to make two of them interact and make a story.
The second one is about choosing your favourite saying/song/movie quote and drawing a simple storyboard out of it. I'm probably doing that one. dunno yet.
The third one was about..something.. I didn't really get it to be honest. It's something about developing ideas for our next big project about combining 2D and 3D animation. I think?

How do you guys do? Have schools started yet?

Only eight more days left of my not-so-lovely summer job! and after that couple of weeks holiday before I go back to England. :3 Am really looking forward to spending some time with my family at our summer house. *__*

Animecon in Tampere was a success in terms of meeting friends and making new ones! It was awesome to get to meet so many lovely people at the same time. We even had a meet-up with our Orivesi comic course's ladies and we went to eat at a Chinese restaurant (PÃ¤ivi offered the food for us all! <3)

I also got to see lots of talented artists at the con's artist alley! There were so many artists of whom I've never heard of and was glad to get to also chat with them for a while. :3
It's be sooo lovely to be able to sell some prints at the artist alley. *__* Once I develop enough as an artist I'll have to give it a try. But I guess that won't happen any time soon. X) Will have to "battle with bears in the mountains" for a couple more years till I'm good enough. :,D

I survived! My dad's 50th birthday parties were full of people. We found 148 names from our guest book and there was lots of people who didn't write their names into it. But the parties were a real success! Everything went like we planned and we got such a good feedback about all the decorations and the atmosphere that we were all smiles after Friday even thought we stayed awake till 6 AM. xD

People were really interested to hear about my studies in England and I got to meet many old family friends whom I haven't seen in a really long time. It was great fun!

People wanted to take photos of themselves with me so that if I happen to get famous they can always say that they've met me for real and they'll have a photo as a proof. I don't know if I should be flattered or not. Though I truly was flattered when I got told that I looked pretty in my new dress. ^___^ Even though a full can of beer fell on my dress when I was sitting in front of a table when two ladies were hugging each other over the table. XD And I couldn't escape the beer falls for I was sitting my back against other people so the whole thing fell on my lap. That night.. I was surely the most beer-smelling absolutist around!

I just started in a new job and so far it.. hasn't been too fun. But am trying to stay optimistic!

My dad's 50th birthday parties are on Friday. We're probably expecting over hundred guests to visit and only something like 2-3 of them are actually relatives. My family's not very close with any relatives but my dad knows a ridiculously huge amount of people (from normal to extremely weird people!) all around Finland (and the world but I really hope only the Finnish friends come or our small home village will to expload of the amount of people XD!)

So simply put.. We're going to have hell lot of a people coming to celebrate on Friday and the whole week has been more or less a pure hell. ^_^ Lots of stressing and arranging things. My little sister baked an enormous amount of biscuits yeasterday and she and mom wrote my dad's name and "50" to all of them with chocolate. They must be nuts.

I hope we'll survive!

In other news. I'm working at the same warehouse I've been working since I was.. err.. 13-14? And next week I'll start in a new job which is basically advertising our home town and selling local food (Klimppisoppa and kropsu) there. They wanted someone who's fluent with English to work there and asked me and one other girl. :3 I hope it's a fun job since it's going to eat almost all my time this summer!

If you happen to have something to send me by mail DON'T send it to my British address anymore. I'm going to move back to Finland for the summer in two weeks and won't most likely be able to receive any of the mail sent here. I'm moving to private accomodation for my second school year so I won't be using the same address when I come back either.

So if you have something for me, please send it to my Finnish address. Thank you! :3

Still working hard with my film. I had to do some big changes to the animation parts and it's taking even more time than I thought. I'm basically working on it all day and night. It's so boring to work on this alone. It was more fun to have a tight deadline when there was other people around you swearing and working on the same projects.
But well.. I guess that's what our class is going to do next week since the deadline is on Friday and we'll all probably end up working in the studio for the last editing stuff. (And I'm pretty sure no-one will be happy since there's always something that doesn't work or not enough computers or you're plain confused about stuff. XD)

Holy pigeons, Batman! Only 3 more weeks left of my first year in the animation course. Where did all the time go? D: I've spent a whole school year in England and didn't even realise it properly until now.
I wonder if I have developed as an artist at all. Probably not. But atleast I didn't die of stress and all the worries I had about living and studying here! Woohoo, that's something worth celebrating! \o/

The deadline of our essays was last Thursday and oh pony how happy I am that I don't have to worry about writing it anymore. There's only the deadline of our abstract film project left but am not too worried about it to tell the truth. I've got most of the material needed for it ready. Just have to draw some animation for it.

I'm going to move into a private accomodation for the second year with four other girls who are all from illustration course. I didn't want to spend my third year in school's halls.

And after the school is over I'm going to go to London Expo with my classmate. It seems like an awesome convention so I'm really excited about it!
And my dad had been lucky enough to get tickets for the Kiss concert in Finland so there's even more things to look forward during the summer vacation. (Kiss was the first band I saw play live. I was 11.)

So yeah. How's everyone else doing? :3 Busy with school and work? Any plans for the summer?

I've been and still are busy with school work. I've got an essay to finish and the deadline of our film project is after three weeks or so. Funny how one seems to get the best and most inspiring ideas for drawings and comics and stuff when the time just isn't right.
(No no, I certainly didn't just draw thumbnails for the first two pages of one comic idea I've had in my mind for God knows how long.)

Ahem. Back to writing the essay with me!

There are sooo many awesome entries to choose from! I was really happy to find so many new talents who I can +watch.

Strange how it's already so warm here. There are flowers on the trees and the temperature is something like 12-16 C all day. It's freaking hot and bright. What happened to the grey and rainy England I was told about when I came here?

I spent two weeks in Finland during the Easter time and we had lots of snow there.

And when I arrived to the airport in London I was suprised because the t-shirt weather had arrived to England already.

And look at me talking about the weather! I'm slowly turning into a real Brit.

Our last course in the 1st year will be about abstract animation. Makes me scream and jump up and down with joy! Not.
To tell the truth I don't really know what we're supposed to do.

So far we've had only one to one tutorials with our visiting teacher and no workshops or practising at all. Well okay.. we were taught how to use a video camera and we've been watching some really ~~weird~~ artistic and original animations but that's pretty much all.

We are supposed to think of some ideas for abstract short films and bring lots of sketches and mind maps to our next class but I really don't have any good or interesting ideas. It's just that.. all the "the point is there is no point in the narrative" -stuff isn't really my thing. So I'm a little lost with this course.

Also.. it's not really helping that I was brought up to dislike abstract art.

My parents have never liked it and I've learned to dislike abstract art too. I really cannot see the point in abstract things! (I'm afraid I see doing abstract art as a total waste of time.)
And one of the reasons why I wanted to be an animator was that I wouldn't have to deal with really artsy stuff all the time since I'm more into narratives and drawing something that actually represents something.

BlÃ¤Ã¤h.. I really hope the teachers will come up with something that's interesting and inspiring for real. Otherwise this upcoming spring term is going to get reeeeally boring and feel like a waste of time.

This: [link] is the comic I've been working on lately. It was a school project for our comic course. And actually! My first proper try with streets on the background. (And I guess it's easy to tell by the way they look..) But I guess I finally learned something completely new when I searched for reference photos and actually sat down to learn from them. It seems patience is all I need for learning new things.

Or maybe I was just pure lucky this time and next I'll try drawing a street it'll look 100 times worse than on this comic? Haha.

Anyway! I'd love to hear your opinion about the comic. :3

A funny thing I noticed.. which actually ceased to be fun very soon: I really can't draw streets. And as strange it might sound that's because I don't know what to draw on to the streets. It's so strange because I walk on the streets every freaking day and it seems I've never just paid enough attention to all the details there are. I've been browsing Google's image search all evening and trying to study drawing different kinds of streets.

And why am I doing this? I think it's finally time for me to really learn to draw better backgrounds. Something else than forests since I draw them most the time. And I'm actually working on a comic which starts from an esplanade and I want the background to look good.

But it's hard. Ã²_Ã³

My head is so full of ideas right now I'm sure it's going to expload. And I'm so inspired to draw all the time I hardly remember to sleep or eat.

But I guess that's only positive! I'll get to finish more things than I usually do.

Things are going well here in England. Am not feeling super homesick all the time anymore. Might be because I've gotten to know my classmates better and am actually starting to enjoy going to the classes everyday.

Right now I'm in a comic course which will last for 5 weeks and at the end of the course we're supposed to have an 8 pages long comic ready. The theme is 'energy' but we were told that we shouldn't worry too much about the theme and just draw something that inspires us. I've got some ideas already. :3

Couple of weeks ago me and my friend Lin went to see the London Zoo. They had pygmy hippos and meerkats! And two okapis. I've never seen an okapi in real life. They're really awesome animals. Unfortunately we spent too long time in the Rain Forest monkey house that we couldn't see all the animals before they closed the zoo. When they annouced that they're going to close the place in 15 minutes we realised that we hadn't seen the hippos yet and run like mad to see them. Well.. Now I have a good reason to go there again since I didn't see all the animals properly. Hehe. And I'd love to go to Whipsnade's zoo too since they have elephants and rhinos and big hippos.

We also went to this awesome store that sells toys, figures, comics, books and artbooks. The store was huge and FULL of awesome stuff. The name is Forbidden Planet (www.forbiddenplanet.com) and they had everything and even more. I've never seen that many comics at once and was about to scream of joy when I first saw the first graphic novel section. But in the end I bought only one book: 'The Art of Mononoke Hime'. The book is filled with beautiful artwork and I love it. <3

I've found some interesting graphic novels during the last couple months and thought that maybe some of you might find them interesting too.

So here's a list:

Mouse Guard by David Petersen
My newest finding and I must say I'm really in love with the idea of an epic story about mouse soldiers. The mice look so adorable with their tiny swords. Here's a link to the novel's official site: [link]

The Clarence Principle by Fehed Said & Shari Chankhamma
For some information: [link] I like the drawing style alot. Basically it's a dark story about the afterlife of a suicide boy called Clarence. He meets quite interesting..people.. in his afterlife.

King of Thorn by Yuji Iwahara

I haven't really been into manga lately but this one truly caught my attention. I LOVE the drawings. The guy is really able to draw both humans and animals in an interesting style. I read his other series Chikyu Misaki sometime ago which wasn't really that good but the artwork was pure gold in my eyes. And the story is really exciting. I simply cannot wait to know how the story ends.
The story is about a virus called Medusa that kills people by petrifying them really slowly and painfully. And unluckily there's no cure for the virus that spreads worldwide. Some people win the chance to get deep-frozen until the cure if found in a lottery but something goes wrong and they wake up possibly after many hundred years but there are no humans in sight but a jungle full of hungry dinosaur-like creatures.
I love it how there are so many different kind of personalities in the small group of survivors. The guy with tattoos and muscles is my favourite.

Artemis Fowl the Graphic Novel adapted by Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin

Since I'm such a big fan of Artemis Fowl -books this one was an instant favourite. I love the way it's drawn and coloured. And Artemis looks ecatly like I had imagined he would if he was ever drawn as a comic character. The graphic novel is really loyal to the story of the first Artemis Fowl -book and it's awesome to see all the scenes from the written story illustrated. I sure hope they'll do graphic novels of the later books too!

Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon

A story of four lions that escape the Baghdad Zoo after American jets have destroyed it and the city around. The lions (one adult male, two adult females and a male cub) wander around the streets of Baghdad and try to survive outside the zoo.

I promise to learn to draw men.
It's so disturbing how all the men I've ever drawn look annoyingly cute or feminine. Even the ones who are supposed to look like mean prisoners. (A good example is our comic project 'Jenna'.)

And the other promise I make every year: I promise that I don't have to promise again next year to reduce swearing.
