I've been grossly remiss these past four months in keeping this thing updated, but if anyone is still watching...

Just a month from my final exams at uni now - fouth year has been crazy. Lots of work to be done but also lots of kayaking to cram in before leaving and that hasn't left a lot of time for photos. My mountaineering levels are down this year as well so far so there have been less of the sweeping landscapes and impressive lighting effects above the scottish highlands that I'm mostly recognised for.
When I have had time to get the camera out I've therefore been looking more at detail texture and composition; I'll try to get up the shots I like in the next wee while.

D

Ok, so over my Christmas break I've had a bit of time to do some photo-taking. I've been aiming at making use of the great winter sunlight - Scotland is so far north that in winter you get great, low angled singlight nearly all day, giving plenty of nice lighting to work with.
Recently I've been trying to think much more about composition than I have been until now - trying to get past my mind's eye which sees in the viewfinder what I want to see rather than every little detail.
So, to everyone who cares to read this and have a look at the pics I'll be putting up in the next few days - PLEASE BE RUTHLESSLY CRITICAL. If there is the sligthest detail of a photo that you don't like, or it just didn't grab your attention enough, please just give it a comment and say - that is the only way I can do better next time.
Good things to comment on; colour, lighting, composition (anything distracting, not interesting, too weird for you or not weird enough for you etc), and perhaps most importantly does it have that magic feel about it?

Cheers
D

Several remarkable things - I just returned from a trip to Glencoe and Glen Etive (more on this - read on) to find that quite surprisingly I had scored a DD. Yay! That was rather unexpected.
Anyway, the weekend trip was largely perfect - winter has arrived early in the northwest and there was a thick layer of powder snow lying even in the floor of the Glens. The sun was shining, with no clouds whatsoever on saturday and only enough to light the sky magically on the sunday. Snowy mountains, frozen rivers, clear sunlight and nothing to do but take pictures - the results of this weekend should be up quite soon.

Dave

Except that it left me with 0 time to take pictures thorughout the whole of July! No shortage of great sights and great evenings and mornings, just too tired and too far from the camera on too many occasions!
So, over the next couple of months I have planned.... well, lots more kayaking and climbing actually.
So, been a long while since my last update - life contrives to prevent me getting online just now.
Rapid synopsis: I'm working as an outdoor instructor at the moment - all the usual stuff; climbing, archery, kayaking. I'm getting as much white water kayaking done as I can and I've registered to do my mountain leader award.

Photography-wise, there's not a lot happening just now - I have too much else going on. One good thing that occured was that I got a really nice set of prints made as a portfolio and got a chance to show it to Ian Cameron (who is one of my particular photographic idols, his website is called transientlight if you're interested). The good result was that he really liked my stuff, and gave me a lot of really good advice about how to pick and choose which photos I choose to print or put online. I don;t have any photo trips up north scheduled just now, so it may be a while before I get any new stuff up.

Out of interest, I'm toying with the idea of buying a Sigma DP1 and a cheap waterproof digital if I can find one. The reason I don't put up many pictures of kayaking or climbing or whatever is that I tend to have my hands full of ice axes or paddle shafts when I'm being bold and daring, so it's a bit uinfeasible to get out the old "Terry" Nikon and "lil' shaky" my tripod.

We'll see :-D

Life is going pretty well right now. Probably not doing as much work as I should toward my degree in physics, but I'm having far too much fun frankly. Wish I was taking more pics but most of my hobbies (Climbing, Kayaking, Swing Dancing particularly) offer limited oppurtunities for photography while they're actually taking place. The number of pics I've missed because I need to use both hands for holding myself onto any particular cliff face is remarkable. A slim waterproof camera is a likely investment in the near future I thik. Student loans are good for something eh?

I was ice climbing yesterday near Aviemore, and the weather came down.

There were moments when I wondered if I would actually make it off the mounatin -
I was standing in an extremely steep gully losing the feeling in my hands and feet, hanging onto the rope attached to my climbing partner, from who I'd had no signals for twenty minutes, and was out of sight. Couldn't see the ground or the summit due to the cloud and rain - the snow was turning to slush right under my feet and big lumps of ice kept dropping past me. Retreat was unfeasible as I was on the low end of a fifty metre rope with James close to the summit, with a couple hundred metres of drop beneath and behid me - we had to finish and try to walk off. The wind was about sixty, gusting seventy on the slope, and was coming straight from my back.

Hurricane force winds, melting snow, drizzle and rain, spindrift and literally very painful hail that forced us to drop and hang on to the ground with our axes to protect our eyes and not get blown away. - one near fall that happened when I was above James and going for the summit, which left me hanging pretty much from a single insecure axe hold - had to get the other axe in and drag myself up by the arms.

So, not a good day, but not necessarily bad now that I'm on the other side. An experience, certainly.

I'm not going to say too much about it here - i hope you simply enjoy the pics as much as I loved taking them - day 1 was a day of ice climbing and walking in the snow clad Cuillin range - day 2 was a day of photography at Neist Point lighthouse - day 3 was the journey home through northern scotland, with a good dose of the Scottish Winter, which has finally arrived

Exam time is upon me which means about eight hours of revision a day - and still the maths makes so little sense! Daft for a system built on logical deduction. As for my Waves and Oscillations notes, lets not even go there.
Also, lets not forget the faulty fire alarm in the flat above mine which means that the building gets evacuated every few hours or so.
Hmm....let's see what else? Oh, well, I just missed out on getting a Canon EOS 3000V for about 60 quid yesterday, which would have been nice.
So apart from all that, I'm trying to avoid spending loads of money on something frivolous (difficult due to the recent arrival of my student loan), and trying not to think about all the places that I can't afford to travel to this summer.

Seeing as I have been at home for the past few weeks I have been editing and uploading through my old computer. Unfortunately that comp uses a regular monitor that seems to have the effect of artificially darkening the colours of any photo you view on it, so that now when I'm back at Uni using my flatscreen TFT, everything seems to be unnaturally bright to me. This isnt just an issue of adjusting the colour settings on the screen - there are also effects such as digital noise that become more apparent using the TFT. Therefore, I'd like to ask peoples opinions of my most recent deviations, as I would rather re-work them to appear properly if everyone also considers them to be too bright.

Cheers!
