After 7 years at DA I feel that it is time for me to cut my ties and shove off.

When I arrived at Deviant Art I was driven to create new photographs to put up here, I received instant feedback and critique, something that has long been forgotten about on DA. This site tipped a few years ago from a website about art to a website about grabbing favorites and page views. Artist growth here is impossible because of the sheer volume of submissions that took no time, thought, or artistic talent whatsoever to create. The format of the website has also gotten to the point that I feel I no longer belong here.

I did meet quite a few friends here. Aaron down south [link] my talented young friend from South Milwaukee named Ryan [link] Juha over in Finland [link] You guys have helped me grow and I've enjoyed having a relationship with each of you as a photographer, I believe we've helped each other grow.

I'll be over at a new grass-roots photo site that I'm trying to help grow, I find the site starting out much the same way DA did, I hope it doesn't stray so far from an artist community as DA did. I can be found here : [link]

Thanks to all of my hundreds of watchers, I'm sorry I won't be bringing you any more photography here.

If things ever change here... Which I doubt they will, I'll be back. Until then, keep your finger on that shutter release and keep making art.

I'm in!

Well Milwaukee's October Gallery Night is coming up, and I'm going to be part of a show in a gallery called: The Warehouse Lofts.

I was just informed today that I "made the cut" if you will, and I'm trying to decide what to go with as a series/theme.

If I go with a forgotten spaces theme, it would look something like this:

The black and whites would be in color, I only have b/w versions of them up here at the moment.

If I went with a slightly more cutting edge approach, and went with HDR, it might look something like this :

Again, those would all be in Color. I'll think on it for a couple of days but please please,

GIVE ME YOUR INPUT,

If you would be so kind.

I'm very excited about this opportunity, and I might even sell a couple pieces, to cushion my wallet a little more, which I would have no problem with whatsoever.

Winter's over, its downhill from here.

Well there won't be anymore snow untill the fall, so its safe to say that there will be no more freezing handsor jumping up and down while I'm waiting for noise reduction or a long exposure to finish. I delt with freezing spray from lake michigan, slipping on ice, and putting my body through it all this winter. I'm more then happy that I did it, but it will be nice to have it easy once again.

This is my 5th year at Deviant art (4th on this account) and I figure its time for a year subscription for myself, and for DA. I am happy to pay a little for what this site has givin me. I know it has changed a lot over the years. I don't get the critique I used to, which is sad in a way, but its a good place to have an interactive portfolio, and to learn new things, and make new friends. I'm here for the long haul, and won't be leaving anytime soon.

I've got a couple of good series underway, I've been reluctant to upload many things to DA, my standards are improving and I don't like throwing every old shot on here. I will keep uploading my HDR shots, because I need critique on them, after a couple weeks of success with it, I've looked back and realized I may be pushing them too far, making them look a little too manipulated, and less like my original intent, using HDR what it is great for, shadow detail, highlight detail.

I managed to fill my 80gb hard drive here on this laptop in under 10 months. I will have to consider deleting some things to make way for more photographs. I shoot everything raw, have for the last year or so, and it takes up tons of space.

I've been keeping a blog updated with much of my work, and thoughts when it comes to photography and photograpy related subjects. You kind find the blog here ----> [link] <---- You will find my series compacted there from time to time, so they are all visible at once.

I'll start looking for a photo job here in Milwaukee sometime very soon, I'd like to do something good... I think I've earned it. I don't want to do anything like work in a cheap studio or anything like that. I'd like to work for a firm or for a gallery or something. I guess we'll see what happens.

Thanks to everyone visiting my page, I'm nearing 1000 favorites from the community, and I'm well on my way to doubling my 10,000 pageviews in the coming months. I'm getting a couple hundred a week, lets keep it that way!

Thanks to all my friends, here on DA, and out there in the world who have supported me these last 5-6 photo filled years. They have been wonderful, and wouldn't have been as wonderful without all of you.

To start things off, I'd like to thank my good friend and collegue =Jono for buying me a 1 month subscription today. He's been here on DA for a while, and I've been with him since near the beginning, I was inspiration to him, and he was inspiration to me. Its important to nutrure the things that motivate you, and to not let them slip away. The preceding is exactly why I keep a very close relationship here on DA with a few photographers who help keep me going, day after day, shot after shot.

Here is some of Jono's work, our styles often collide.

:thumb47104429: :thumb45273176: :thumb43787580: :thumb42476069:

Secondly I'd like to update anyone out there who cares to listen, that I'm getting along well in my photographic education. I'm getting past some of those classes that were.... not up my alley, and into the good ones, with teachers I truly respect. These teachers encourage my creativity and push me further, faster. I work the best when I can choose projects that I want to do, and then am helped along the way with things to better my work. As far as the series' I'm working on... There are three, the titles of which are the titles of this jornal.

One I've been working on since October is the Boxcar Series.

:thumb41672027: :thumb41879252: :thumb46381756: :thumb46569977:

There are about twice as many shots in this series, but thy are not all on DA.

I find a huge amount of beauty and character in these box cars. They have seen alot more of this country then many of us ever will. They take tags and other grafiti art and bring them as far as the contents of the boxcar itself. You find them cutting through the rain, the snow, the rockies and the coastlines. They push on with no reguard for anything but the saftey of their cargo. They take hits so the boxes inside them don't have to, they rust, get hit by hail, house the homeless, and more, et they are left sitting in hostile, unguarded environments... just waiting to be set off, coupled to a steal super-mover, thousands of feet long.

The second series I've been working on for the last year or so, its a tribute to the great lakes, and the power they contain. This series is not restricted to the water and structure in the lakes, it also includes the environments shaped around them.

:thumb38990806: :thumb38990146: :thumb33029791: :thumb31454761:

This is only a fragment of what I have for this series, but not everything can be funneled to DA, my gallery would have a thousand deviations.

The last series, and the one I am the most interested in, is my Forgotten Spaces series. There are places the vast majority of the population walk by every day, and see as eyesores, as places that we would be better off without. These places were once places of immense productivity, of an american dream. Inside these places, my camera is able to give them a second life, an afterlife of beauty in dignity, a chance for them to tell their stories for possibly their last time. These facilities are the blank novel, the leftover structure the binding, each room is a chapter, the halways run through these structures like a river of ink, and whtats left are the words, every record left behind, every old tipped over broken piece pf history has a part in the story.

Over the next few years this stories will unravel through my photography. Stories that will soon be crushed to gravel, and then buried under a mountain of condos, where new memories will be made, and old ones forgotten forever.

:thumb43929970: :thumb45865909: :thumb47469113: :thumb43885929: :thumb41879368: :thumb32387679: :thumb32387124:

I'm still excited for photography, the sky's the limit.

I have had a series of realizations about a series of things in photography over the last few days. Alot of things have brought this on. But I thought I would share them with you here.

1: Film > Digital ... at least for the moment for me.

For you to understand this you need to know some history about me. I started shooting on my Nikon N60 when I was in 10th grade, I realized I wanted to be a photographer. I shot roll after roll of color kodak print film, and after the bills started piling up and my eyes got all starry over the digital craze I decided I just had to have one. 2 birthdays, a Christmas, and a graduation later, I had my nikon D100 and 2 lenses, along with my N60. The N60 sat on the shelf for the last year and change collecting dust while I exposed a powerfull 8000+ shots with the D100. I finally started here at UWM this year and busted out that old N60 again. This time shooting black and white 100 speed kodak Tmax-100. I fell in love with photography for about the 10th time, every time its for a different reason. Those reasons have been varried over the years, but they are piling up and have re-confirmed, time after time, that I want to do this for a living. Back to the point. I have been shooting film, and have gotten used to it for the time being, I got out my D100 today, shot shot shot. Every frame I looked at I had a problem with, the colors were drab, or contrast was dull... it just doesn't have the quality of film... So I conclude by saying that in terms of what I use photography, which is making art, and quality shots, I side with film. I still will be using digital more then ever, but I feel fortunate to not have missed the dying film generation, which I plan on keeping alive.

2: Slide film = the most underapreciated medium I have seen in photography.

Colors are AMAZING, quality is INSANE, and the feel is so unique. I say this after watching my photo partner Howie -> [link] <-- (Check him out) come out with roll after roll of amazing stuff.

3: I can't wait for the rest of my life. Photography will be on every page of my life's story. I wouldn't change what I do for anything.

Its that time of year, final tests, papers, projects and all that jazz. I am ready to start my final project in photo 251 and, although there are a few constraints, it is up to me what I want to do.

These are my ideas thus far:

I would like to focus primarily on the study of light and relationships of black and white in 10-15 photographs. Many will be studio shots that display relationships of glass objects and studies of the greyscale in general. I would like to have the shots be as "clean" as possible.

To acomplish this I will use:

* Precise matting
* As perfectly white or black or grey backgrounds in the stuio as possible
* Uniform Lighting
* Attention to every detail in cleaning photographic subjects such as glasswear
*Anything else to keep the photos clean and neat.

The photographs will be printed 5x7 or larger, I haven't decided on a size as of now.

They will either be laid out like this:

[] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] [] []

Or like this:

[] [] [] []
[] [] [] []
[] [] [] []

Depending on the outcome of the work.

Why I am posting this here:

I would love it if all of you could help me with any ideas to creating light and greyscale studies in the lab or out.

Any ideas you have for glasswork or lightwork PLEASE post here, link to things if you want. Anything to help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help and I will look forward to any help I get from you guys.
