So, what can be so interesting about me going into a game store and walking out with an M-rated game, specifically the first Assassin's Creed? The rating enforcement. Here in Canada, it's illegal for a business to provide M-rated games to underage people knowingly, such as the rule no cigarettes for people under 19, and no beer for people under 18. (Tobacco and Alcohol taste BAD anyway.) So today, I decided to try and buy my first M-rated 17+ game for myself. Here's how it went:

I went to the store and started looking at a gallery of PS3 games. I initially picked Motorstorm, but I've just finished Burnout Paradise 100%. I didn't want a driving game.

I soon picked up Lair and God of War Collection, but I soon decided it was out of my budget. I can only blow up so much money on games.

I settled on Lair and Assassin's Creed. I heard it was a good game. Then I started falling in line for a 30 minute wait. I hear squabbles about Rockband, Guitar hero and Modern Warfare 2. Games I didn't care about. Modern Warfare 2 is another dumb dumb FPS based on the military, while the music games Rockband and Guitar Hero are so... easy.

Soon, it came to my turn. Having cash in hand, I propped my two game choices on the counter.

"Um, Sir, I need some identification for me to sell you this game."

Huh?

Me: "What for?"

"Sir, it's for this game, it's rated M, I have to assure your aged 17 and over."

Me: "Ugh. Would a TTC Card work?"

"No, it has to be a Government issued card."

Oh Crap.

Me: "School IDs don't work?"

"No."

Oh darn no... I was running out of options.

Me: "I'm a legal adult, aged 18, but I seem to have a hard time confirming that."

"Oh, you have a drivers license?"

Me: "I can't drive for crap."

I pulled out my phone, PSP, coin pack, still nothing. I unzip the auxiliary compartment of my bag, and lucky me, I held along my Health Card. It is issued by Ontario, for health insurance.

Me: "Would an OHIP card work? It has my picture, name and birthdate."

"Yeah, this is perfect."

A guy comes next in line to me, carrying a brand new PS3 complete with two free games. Unfortunately, one of these games is M-Rated. The guy is refused his purchase, and walks out of the room cussing and swearing at everyone, then raising his middle finger and shouting "F*** the ESRB."

Lesson: Bring proper identification when buying games rated M. Such a nanny society we live in. :/

So, in one of my classes, I have to imagine myself as a politician pushing ahead a plan for the country. Now, we can each all choose any agenda we would like. What I have chosen is to push forward the importance of Gross National Happiness. As you might now, most governments put pride and importance in their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which is the total value of goods and services in a given time. A higher GDP per person (GDP divided by total population, higher number is better) signifies better productivity of the country, and better "richness" of the country. Now, Canada has a GDP Per Person ratio of INT$39,098 per person. United States has a GDP Per Person ratio of INT$39,098 per person.

(To see the GDP Per Capita of your country, head on to the first Wikipedia link, or the CIA World Factbook.)

Now, come to think of it, these are just numbers, statistics, plain flat data. You may be in the high end of the GDPPP ratio, but are you happy? Does a high Gross Domestic Product ensure happiness? What if the government got it all wrong by racing for a high GDP, but leaving the happiness of the people they serve in uncertainty? Do you think the happiness of every citizen in the country matters more than money? Would you prefer Gross Domestic Happiness or Gross Domestic Product? Tell me your thoughts...

======================

Just for those who wonder, here's some sources where I pull the numbers and statistics from:

Wikipedia Source:
[link]

"Official" Sources:
[link]
[link]

Farewell PG-Black skin. I knew it wasn't forever. Ninja Assassin pulled the free skin support, so back to the old green one. I still don't see the worth in getting subscription though, it's just a skin.

So, I sit here just finished playing Beta games. For those who don't know, (Closed) Beta games are games that are sent to selected people for them to try out. I was lucky to snag Massive Action Game and Battlefield Bad Company 2 for the PS3, so here are my thoughts on them:

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Beta:
While this is a "meh-to-playable" game, the servers are highly unbalanced. I mean, I was just level 9, and the game put me in a server with level 25s. You know what happened: I was losing pretty badly because my weapons aren't strong enough, nor I have any specs or FPS experience. If they add some rank balancing, this will be ok.

Massive Action Game
Another FPS game, Massive Action Game's claim to fame is 256 players. I said that right: 256 players. However, this does not work very well in practice. Most of the time I was sitting in a lobby or queue... for up to 49 minutes just to get enough players to actually start the game. There is also army inbalance. MAG has three armies, the RAVENs, VALORs and SVERs. It is imbalanced because there are loads and loads of SVERs that are registered (me included) and it massively outnumbers the population of RAVENs and there is a laughably small amount of VALORs. This imbalance makes it hard to get enough people to play with. Once in game, however, this game will rock.

In finality, I think if I am going to purchase a new game, it will be MAG. Lots of fun potential to be had here.

Such a confusing world we live in.

Anyway, here's a quick sum-up of the news about it: [link]

EDIT: In my opinion, if these emails are in fact taking
the whole picture and are genuine, it would be a blow to
those "green taxes" countries have implemented.
So, Ninja Assassin has been nice enough to give us some free
journal skins for a limited time only. So why let it pass
without making your own skin? I made this, the PG-Black Gear
skin. Pretty nice, eh? This gear is my favorite equipment in
the game DJMAX Portable2. Wide notespan, good amount of Battery,
Adds 5% EXP (though useless now as I have reached Level 99) and
gives 5% more GOLD when you complete a level.

The skin is still kind of wonky (CSS coding is very basic and
sloppy) but I will refine it as time passes.

So, my 18th birthday flew across and I still feel like 17.
Or 16 for some strange odd reason I can't explain. :/

Then my grades at school are at average. Pretty OK.

My PS3 is starting to collect dust after I got a small
remote control helicopter that I have been flying around.
Though when I get God of War Collection for the PS3 I could
undust the console and play new games.

Know any good games? Okami was the last story-based game that
I have played. And I loved it because it was so good. ^^

My PSP has been seeing a lot of (ab)use lately. The faceplate
is cracking up, the UP button is starting to become broken and
five pieces of duct tape hold it together. It seems that DJMAX
Portable2 is testing the system to breaking point. Let's see
how long this thing holds up together. (The game is nice.)

Anyway, this is a message for all those people around me
and those who happens to read this: Make your own skin!
It's fun to do and the results are good when you do it.
Better than using someone else's skin.

By the way, this skin works best in 1280x800 resolution.
It looks messed up in resolutions other than that.

(PG-Black GEAR is an element in DJMP2 from Pentavision. CSS Code by me.)

.

This law is called the ACTA. Under this new law, the government will have the right to search your computer, MP3 and other personal devices with no reason or warrant whatsoever. Combined with the PATRIOT Act, allows the law (USA and countries agreeing to it) to pull your car over (for example) and search your devices, break into private forums, open your email, enter your house (to search your devices, again), wiretap your telephone line, monitor your instant messaging, monitor ALL forms of communication (even plant bugs in your house) with no reason to be there whatsoever and practically do anything with what it finds - even if they publicize these private information - they CAN.

USA isn't the only one: European Community, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Canada are also joining in.

What are they searching for exactly? Simple: For downloaded MP3s, movies, music and games. The Obama administration will put fear in internet users and profit into specific companies. The companies who support these are tired of their music and videos downloaded and uploaded to Youtube. They want PROFIT. Taking down Youtube videos is not enough. They want MORE. And by harassing people at random and getting their personal files searched and made example of in public, the public will be scared and will be scared into buying CDs with one good song and many low-quality filler songs. Then there will be more money for the fat cats of Wall Street and no one will retire except for the very rich. PROFIT should not come first over the personal rights of a person. The government should not tap our lines and methods of communication and search our files without a proper and good reason to be there. The government should busy itself bringing our troops home from Iraq (Canadian troops are in there too), giving quality education (not boring, repetitive and unmotivating "education") on schools and making the world a better place for it's citizens. Not mowing down people to be made example of and profit companies.

We are running out of time. Please spread the word.

ACTA:
[link]

PATRIOT Act:
[link]

(P.S: While I disagree the companies' profiteering over fear, I do buy their games. They should be rewarded too. However this is too far.)

Well... After just a year I broke my computer already. It is an Acer Aspire 3050, and I was stroking a screwdriver in the intake vent to remove the dust buildup. After I did, I powered it back on and it went to Windows. I noticed it was so quiet. I checked on the intake and I discovered I snapped a wire clean off the cooling fan. The fan no longer spins up, that's why it's quiet.

Now it overheats when I play games (sucks), do art on GIMP (sucks) and anything processor intensive. However, it's fine with light duty.

Well, I got to open the laptop up with a screwdriver this weekend and reattach the wire. Well, s*** happens.

Right... I moved to my new house. It's a bit of a wreck actually. We have to rip out the old and paint it. And the paint is messy.

Aside from that, all the crap is at the first floor. It's a mess. The wireless internet is now set up, lacking the two microservers. And it's just been a hard day, on and offline.

Online, there's Spyroforum. Unfortunately, I was still upset about Spyrorocks reading Private Messages of other members. I kinda felt violated about him reading my PMs and other PMs without them knowing. It actually costed me my Moderator rank. But, well, screw the rank. My friends are more important than that.

I kind of feel that SR lulled me of the false sense of privacy by labelling it "PRIVATE messages." Then I trusted it will be private because it is labeled as such. I was wrong to trust that.

Then he pushes me around saying, "Did you read the privacy policy? All forms of communication is moderated. Therefore, I have the right to monitor that form of communication." I literally cried. He put the link at the very bottom of the page. And nobody usually sees or cares about it. He should INFORM users that it is monitored in the first place!

I don't know, but even if I am reciting Baa Baa Black Sheep on PMs and send nothing else, I do not want people - especially trusted people - to read my recital if it wasn't meant for them.

Then I acted. I teamed up with my friend to hastily repair The DoDR, a private forum that we created earlier but abandoned. We picked it up, stripped it down and made it into a dedicated PM box. So we can have private conversations without the grasp of Spyrorocks.
