Last Sunday was amazing.

I logged onto DA and discovered I had 85 messages - at least 60 of that was comments, watches and favourites. I had to keep looking at that number to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

And to top it all off, I was featured on Daily Deviants! [link]

With all the lovely comments and favourites I just wanted to say that yes, it's all my own work but just to be clear/fair, my creations were inspired by a book (on dragons!) by Christie Friesen. While I didn't follow her instructions, her tips were useful and her work inspirational.

Most importantly of all, thanks to everyone who commented, added my work to their favourites or me to their friends!

EDIT:

We moved offices a few months ago and my manager asked for some things to help organise her cupboards including 8 magazine racks/boxes. These are plastic containers that allow you to slot A4 documents into and stands upright like a folder. I got some new ones from the Stationery section and some old ones as I hate the idea of just binning them and ordering new ones.

My manager didn't like the manky old different coloured ones so I started to find newer ones in our communal cupboards to swap them around. I had managed to swap two when I noticed that the last old one had a web which was also accompanied by the largest spider I've seen in donkeys.

At this time I started making 'gahh' noises so Tracy came over and I explained the problem. She was most sympathetic but as she also wasn't that keen on them, she wasn't of much help. In fact no one in my team was. Ian's response was to say it's dead and knock the box around until he was proven wrong. His solution, as we girls were quite adamant that this was a man's job, was to bin it.

Not the brightest of ideas. If Linda hadn't come along I don't know what we'd have done. She disappeared with the box and then came back with it minus the spider. She later confessed to flushing it down the toilet but she defended herself saying that it could swim. And she knew that because 'it was doing this'. She then balanced on one leg and demonstrated froggy style breast stroke with her remaining limbs. And my manager then told me she didn't want any more of those magazine racks.

My question to you three, and you know who you are, is if you were faced by this giant demon spider and you were the only man in a team of ten, what would you do?

I can't wait to hear this.

OK, so I had one of my brilliant ideas a ways back. Except it, like so many, didn't get very far. I was going through a phase where I was considering creating my own website for a mixture of things and perhaps even a webcomic which I could throw a few friends into for extra flavour. I did actually attempt the latter but didn't get very far. I'm not sure if I have the time or creativity to continue but I thought I might as well finish what I did do and put it on DA.

If you're wondering why they're in scraps, let me ask you one thing: have you BEEN to the comics section on DA? They're good! Really, really good. There's no way I'm putting my doodles there.

You know, I just can't figure it out. People who view my gallery tend to add my horsie to their favourites. Why? OK, so it's cute but so is my giraffe. And the horse in comparison to so much is very simple. I just don't get it.

I think that after the Dreamcatcher I hit a wall. I've this thing about progressing and the next thing having to be better than the last. I guess I focus too much on it as I've been avoiding Fimo for a while. ~boolean263 challenged me to play around with a colour I didn't like and see what I could come up with. ie no plan but as I procrastinated for a few nights, ideas poofed into being in a vague way. Green says toads/frogs, crocs and dragons. So I was planning a dragon on his back with a gorged stomach. The idea of the dragon balancing on his head occurred to me but I really thought it would be too much hassle.

Anyway, the point is that I did something I'm not too pleased, with a colour I usually avoid, in under one and a half hours. And I enjoyed it. I think it was just what I needed. Thanks Boo.

I'm tempted to go home and work with layers, the same way I did with the Dreamcatcher's prow. Give something an alien look. Or I could go back to the mammoth task of Huanghe shoving Kao, who's pinning him down, in the face while gnawing on Boo's leg, who's hanging onto Allethaen's leg who's trying to pull free.

No chance. Alien it is.

This will be hard.

1) If I am not too lazy to fill up my bottle, I can happily guzzle 3.5 to 4L of water a day.
2) I can wiggle both my ears at the same time or just my right one on its own.
3) I like slightly under-ripe bananas fresh from the fridge - they have to be green at the stem but preferably nowhere else. OR if they're ripe, they have to come from the fridge.
4) When I get Ang Pow or lucky red packets with money, I hide them.
5) I only think of what I'm going to wear to work a half hour before leaving home and have to iron everything last minute which makes me late. But do I learn? Nooooooo...
6) I am a firm believer in the fact that when ill, the only thing that I should be eating in order to get better is rice.

That wasn't too bad until I got to number 5. Well, I've fulfilled my obligation to Kao. Well, the important part anyway.

Our underground (as in tube/trains) has a free weekday newspaper that commuters grab as if they were free donuts. My friend Sam picks one up for me as I walk to work. Anyway, there's a horoscope with each issue - known as the Metroscope as the paper's called the Metro - and whoever writes it tends to be mean to Leos. Which I find really unfair. We're not all attention-grabbing, vain, arrogant people. Some of us *coughs* just have those traits in moderation. (Don't debate that, this isn't the topic of conversation plus it could be hazardous to your health.)

Anyway, mine today says:

You are inspired to travel, start studying or even get religion. Your personal philiosophy gets a shot of va-va-voom.

Travelling - true, true, I have itchy feet. I've had them for more than a month now, I just don't know what to do about them. My brother went backpacking in Europe last summer and while I envied him, the idea of being in countries where nobody understands me isn't very reassurring. I asked my brother where he'd go now that he's been to Europe. He said back to Europe. Talk about unhelpful. Maybe I should just get him to shove me out the door with a packed case and passport in hand. Or open the atlas, close my eyes and just point to somewhere on it. I bet I land in the ocean. Or somewhere equally unappealing.

Studying - well, if there was something I wanted to study fulltime and there was actually a course in it, I'd do it. But there isn't on both counts though I'm trying to pinpoint the former.

Get religion - as in understand it? Or get a new one? The second doesn't appeal and the first, well, that doesn't appeal either.

For anyone reading this, grab the nearest paper and tell me what your daily horoscope says. Or find an online one!

Anyone with an ounce of common sense would test out an unfamiliar material with a small idea first but not me. I had to go the whole hog.

Last Saturday I made a lovely armature (I was very proud of it) out of copper wire, wire mesh and foil. It took about two hours but it was worth it. For some reason I have been stuck with the image of a falling Western in my head for a while. Although falling isn't really an accurate description - he's in freefall. I bought two small blocks of premo-sculpey some time ago and as more people seem to use sculpey than fimo, I automatically assumed it would be easy to work with. Idiot that I am. Oh, and sculpey is another type of polymer clay for those that may not know.

First off, sculpey needs to be kneaded to soften it. It's not as hard as fimo classic but it's annoying that it's not soft to begin with. I'm getting spoilt. As it's less soft, covering the wire mesh took a while. I found it exhausting so with most of the armature covered, I stuck it in a plastic bag overnight. Sculpey on the whole isn't horrible to use and my new clay shaper tools are great but everything takes so much longer. Or seems to. Admittedly I did myself no favours choosing this kind of project - the wings are folding inwards so it makes work even slower due to the awkward shape.

On Sunday, I added spines to the wings and then some muscle and sinew to the wing joint/arm. Also more shape to the rib cage/body but this was all done on just one outer side of one wing. I fattened up the neck, shaped the head a little and then popped him back into his bag. I don't know if I'll continue working on him. Part of me wishes I had stuck to fimo. I also wish I had taken a photo of the armature before adding the sculpey.

Oh well, live and learn.

It’s after midnight and I’ve class tomorrow so I really should be in bed, but I’ve just finished The Alchemist and I feel a need to write down a few things.

Allethaen, you were right. It contains some Biblical references; which do not appeal but they play such a small part that they do not in any way detract from my enjoyment of the story.

Well, what is it about? It’s a beautiful simply-written (as in the style) tale about a boy who goes in search of treasure but on the way learns many lessons about the world, other people and himself. But really, it’s about truth. It tells us what we already know but need to hear again and again. Especially now that we are grown up and feel the need to be practical in order to do well in our society.

Every time the story said something I felt was important to remember, I dogeared the page (not the right way to treat a book but it was secondhand). But the importance was due to how simple and true the statement was. I’ve got 14 flaps. It sounds daft that a truthful and understandable statement can make me feel so good but it does. Life or matters we come across in life can be complicated but if so, it’s often because we make it that way. Children often do not see things the same way and while adults will fret about things they cannot change, a child will accept them and move on. It feels good to be reminded of how simple life can be and the things that really matter.

What was so great about this book? Was it inspiring? Yes, but more than that, when you read it, you dare to dream and do not fear to fail. The Alchemist doesn’t disregard the possibility of failure or the difficulty involved in achieving one’s goals but it makes you willing to risk what you have and not fear the difficulties that you may have to face. It tells you the truth, both good and bad, and best of all, makes you want to do more than just dream.

Or rather the lack of it. The UK reservoir levels are lower than usual and this morning on the news, a lady was talking to a woman and two kids about how much water they use. The son only washed every other day - I suppose it could have been worse. It could have been once every week.

You hear about people leaving the water running while they brush their teeth, a concept I find rather strange. But that is one way many waste water. (A colleague just threw something at me but it was to get my attention so that she could give me something yummy to eat so it was worth it. We have a few barbarians in the office thank goodness.)

Back to the subject of water, I don't take baths and I don't use our dishwasher. I usually wash full loads of clothes at a time. I don't leave the tap running when I brush my teeth.

But I have one fault - one beeeeegggg fault - once I get into a hot shower I find it very hard to get out. The woman's daughter said 20 mins every day. If I could do that, I'd definitely be saving water.

So I guess, I should make it more fun and time myself to find out what record I can set for myself.

I went to the supermarket on Saturday to pick up a few things - including lightbulbs as the one in my room blew - and I was queuing behind this lady at a till when I realised that I had forgotten the bulbs. There was no room on the conveyer belt thing to put my stuff so I popped my basket on the ground behind her and walked a few steps away to get them. I was gone less than a minute and upon reaching my basket found a man with also converging at the same point at an angle but to come in front of me and my basket. The conversation went something like:

Me: Excuse me, but I was here before you.
Not nice man: No you weren't.
Me: But I left my basket here.
Not nice man: You weren't in the queue.

I took a moment to consider the situation but as I was in no particular hurry...

Me: Well, if it's really important to you, then go ahead.
Not nice man as he begins to unload: Maybe you should learn to use an eye.
Me: Maybe you should learn some manners.
Not nice man: What did you say?
Me: Maybe you should learn some manners.
Not nice man: YOU should learn some manners.
Me: I have very good manners.
Not nice man: No, you don't have manners.
Me: I have got manners which is why you're going first.

That stopped him but to be fair, he did put that plastic thing to separate my food from his (I said thank you, naturally). I was feeling very pleased with myself until I got home, realised that I had bought the wrong bulbs and blew another one, this time in the lounge.

Not very fair, but vastly amusing, don't you think?

Leave a comment here (in the journal's commentbox) and...

1. I'll respond with something random about you.
2. I'll tell you what song/movie reminds me of you.
3. I'll pick a flavor of jello to wrestle with you in.
4. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me.
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of.
7. I'll ask you something that I've always wondered about you.
8. If I do this for you, you must post this on your journal. You MUST. It is written.

Let me just state for the record that there is NO WAY I'd wrestle anyone in jello. Instead I will pick a flavour of jello for you to be were I about to eat you.

It's funny how no matter how tired you are, inspiration can still strike. Work's been crazy and yet an idea is taking root. I think it's fairly obvious that I like Fimo but I've never started on a real project.

Granted I haven't been playing with it for very long.

Yesterday I made a little China man - he had a triangular hat, a pigtail and little slit eyes. And today it occurred to me that I could make a whole chess set out of Fimo with little China men as pawns. Then I'd have to decide on characters for the other pieces.

Let's forget for the moment that I'd somehow have to make them.

The King would be the Jade Emperor
The Queen, the Dragon
The Bishop, the Phoenix
The Knight, the Kirin
The Rook, the Tortoise

And the colours? Red and Gold of course!

What a wonderful and impossible idea. I think I'll just continue dreaming. It's just easier that way.

Anyway, it's been a long day so I'm off!
