A query do dA's help desk

Hello,

I don't know if people have reported this but it's the one single thing that vexes me the most on dA. I'm Icelandic and in my language, as in many others, we have commas over some of our letters. But when writing such a letter on dA and a "p" comes after said letter, dA annoyingly displays the Wink/Razz emoticon. "..hó.."

So instead of writing h_ó_p I'm forced to write h_o_p.

I speak spanish as well and have also encountered this problem there.

Now I ask you, is there no way of disabling the Razz when the comma preceding the "p" is above a letter? Better still, is it possible to disable the Razz with a comma completely and only have it linked to apostrophes?

Should I have a kiriban for the 11.000th visitor? Screw it, I wouldn't be writing this if I wasn't serious about the idea.

So here goes:

I've been less than myself for the past few days. Not quite throwing up, but almost. Not quite with a splitting headache but rather a constand throbbing. Not quite full-on sick but still pretty sick. And I'm sick of it. It doesn't suit me at all.

This I maintain is the reason for my lack of DeviantArting. For which I am sorry. Also, school is pretty hectic... What is this, an excuse journal? Ick. Switching to another, albeit brief topic:

What, in your opinion, is the most solid brand of cars? I'm going to sell mine this summer and really want a good, solid german or japanese one instead. Won't buy korean again (Daewoo). Maybe I should just make this a poll as well. Yeah, that sounds good.

Oh, [insert self-pitying rant here] my me. Isn't it terrible? But worry not. I forsee a great burst of activity here on DA within the next few eons (read: days). *francis-john will finally get his kiriban, for example.

I've just recently rediscovered that I can actually draw, altough I must say gryphons are really testing me. The feeling of this discovery is both wonderful and exciting and by the cigar buddies that are Odin and Zeus, I intend to channel it!

Episode 65 of the 10th Muse podcast is out. You can get it on iTunes or at the 10th Muse blog. It's a fun three-way chat about games, developing, playing and just gaming in general. What I like about this particular episode though is that they commented on my comment.

The topic starts 28 minutes into the podcast and was "When you play a game that has characters of both genders, do you most often choose the opposite or same gender as yourself?" I left a comment on =Zatransis's poll on the subject and apparently it had some relevance because they even went through pronouncing 'Drekafluga' to read the comment. It felt weirdly nice.

Finally, after a fantastically busy summer, I'm back to being a DA regular. I'm down to 700 unviewed deviations and 300 unread journals. I predict a weekend of browsing.

With my first journal of the fall, let me introduce to those of you who don't know, the wonders of Greasemonkey. The only prerequisite to Greasemonkey revolutionising the way you browse the internet is using Firefox. And if you're not doing that already then, frankly, I'm baffled. So go ahead and install the Greasemonkey add-on and we shall begin your browsing transformation.

The Goodies

Today I was working with a guy who said he was God. I found it quite interesting.

Also, exhaustion is about to grind it's way to my core. After Wednesday (or so I'm told), I can have personal time again. My drawing pipes are clogged up and need to be washed out. So there are my plans for Thursday and Friday evenings. Let there be crap! ...which gradually gets better as I will have more time to doodle.

If my car were a person it would have a driver's license by now. That's both good and bad. It means it doesn't have any electrical gimmicks so if something goes wrong odds are that I can fix it myself. But on the other hand it's ageing and that means added maintainance. And lastly, it's french.

The french have an approach to mechanics which always reminds me of Richard McDuff's sofa. In Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (by Douglas Adams, as you should well know), a sofa is irreversibly stuck on the staircase to Richard's apartment. It can't be edged out. Being a geek and a programmer he makes a computer simulation of the whole situation and makes the following discovery: Not only is the sofa impossible to remove, but there is no way for it to have got into that position in the first place.

In France, these conundrums are embraced by the car industry and every car is put together like a mix of origami and complex 3D puzzles. For example, it can't be considered normal to basically rip the car apart just to be able to get the oil pan out. My Clio is half-way through it's curing process now and my fingers are recharging their healing powers. Chin up.

I've moved to Reykjavík for the summer. Go south! And with all the moving and adapting to a new job (Reykjavík City Hostel receptionist, handyman and resident geek) I've been left with precious little time to do much else. Also, my in-laws (who I'll be living with for the summer) are remodelling their guest-house so I'm overworked at home as well.

Hence my lack of presence here on DA and subsequent lack of the Daily doodles. And I had such high hopes. I intend to jump-start my doodling again, Crank 2 style.

Intruder alert!

If you've yet to see Wolverine, make sure to stay through the credits. There are two hidden scenes. Now, there will be some spoilers here so if you don't want to know, don't read on.

Only one thing about Iron Man was downright laughable. When Stark came back from captivity he said he wanted an American cheeseburger and was promptly given one from a Buger King of all places. So no biggie there and compared to Wolverine it's negligible.

First, too many characters. I mean, I like comic book characters. I like seeing them on screen. What I don't like is having way too many and sometimes very vague characters plastered all over it for no apparent reason. Storybending was within limits for the most parts but I was disappointed by what they did to Wade Wilson. Deadpool (Wade) is one of my favourite characters and Ryan Reynolds was spot-on but Deadpool came off like a rushed idea in the end scene.

Wolverine has amazing hearing and can smell a person a mile away. Why didn't he notice his wife was still alive, even in his hysterical state?

The one thing that irked me the most though, were the adamantium bullets. Yes, for storytelling purposes in both previous and future films, Wolverine would have to lose his memory. But to have permanent bullet sized holes in his adamantium skull is a major flaw.

It made me wonder, remember that scene in X2 where the police surrounded Bobby's house. Wolverine got shot in the head and went out cold for a minute. Then the bullet got pushed out of the wound and he was awake. There is not enough enough tissue on a person's forehead for a bullet to get stuck there and it was a flaw of that film that it did. But it happened so therefore the bullet must have hit the hole left by the adamantium bullets and entered Logan's brain. Yet it had no effect. Weird, huh?

Ok, enough with the rant

I didn't mean to go on like that. Kinda happened on it's own. I still like the movie though. These are just the things that bugged me. Anyway, here are my favourite dA artists.

Well, this is a nordic runestave. From what I know it originates in farming, and more specifically, it was used for mowing. These staves (runes) should be carved on the upper handle of the scythe and coloured with blood from the main artery of your left hand. That could of course easily be translated into battle, carved into the hilt of a sword, "mowing" down those who oppose the wielder. Historians, feel free to correct me. Others may not feel as free.

Of course, there are many similar runestaves, each with it's own use but I haven't found any other direct variations of this one. The Viking Compass (Vegvísir) and Helm of Awe (Ægishjálmur) are probably the most known of the runestaves and both are pretty popular as tattoos here in Iceland. Even Björk's got one.

Why is it all over dA?

One theory for this popping up all over the place is some sort of promotion for Aspen's new comic, who's promotional covers can be found here and here (plus this promo awesomeness).

Azeroth? Are you there?

I want a map of Azeroth. I don't know why, I just crave a map of Kalimdor, The Eastern Kingdoms and Northrend. Yeah, that's right, screw Outland. I want something like this but preferably a more detailed map, like what is used in the base of this entertaining piece. Google gives me nothing and neither does searching dA. Any ideas? Any leads? Any sources?! Anyone!?!

Also Team Fortress 2 is awesome. If you're looking for a multiplayer shooter, this is it. I'm rocking the Heavy, Soldier and Scout at the moment. And do check these links out if you're not familiar with the game. Do it now. It's that cool.

The Watched Ones and The Game

There is a computer game - the computer game - which will not release it's polygon-impaired grip of me. I've played countless games, from disappointing ones to timeless masterpieces. But in all those years of playing there hasn't been anything so tantalising, so addictive, so gripping in it's own being. It is so attainable. It is right there. I just don't have the £8.00 a month and I don't have the time to play so I can't allow myself to be sucked in. Actually I do have the money but it's still a valid excuse.

World of Warcraft is not the best looking game. Even with the updates it sill looks chunky and rough. I'm playing the best looking games in the world right now. Games like Far Cry 2, Unreal Tournament III, Assassins Creed and Oblivion so stacked with graphic extras that it has doubled in hard drive space. But there is nothing like WoW's character. It is utterly beautiful. Few games equal it in legend or lore. It has endless possibilities, it is ever expanding and ever evolving. I want to have the time and discipline to play it just for an hour or so each time and not be lost. I just know that I would be. WoW Model Viewer will have to do for now. WoW is still installed and updated on my computer and because of that I can play a sort of weird WoW dress-up. That's both a blessing and a curse.

How's this for a change?

I think this looks nice. I like it. Courtesy of ¢nyssi. I might try to improve it one day but right now I don't see the point. Let the pros handle this stuff like pros. I'm only gonna fuck it up. I also like Deviant Art's new look. No, I love it. Sleeker, neater, friendlier user interface.

And thanks to the people who participaded in my pointless poll. I never expected more than a couple. Now I'm going to have to come up with a decent one.

Also, please let me know if the new DevID screws up the page on your screen.

Another CSS

And here's another thing I should get better at, just because it's ridiculous not to. CSS. I always seem to jump into these kind of things and then lose interest after a few days. Anyway, I'm quite pleased with the outcome of this one even though most of it is not mine. But it's a nice basis and I'm looking forward to expanding on it.

I'm mainly babbling here but I want to see how the CSS layout will look and I'd rather not resort to Lorem Ipsuming it.

The line goes: "...Haven't you people ever heard of closing a goddamn door..." but for some weird reason it was decided to cut out 'god', effectively making 'god' a curse word.

And that baffles me. I also think censoring in this way is inherently stupid. You always make out what the missing word is and replace the silence or beep with it in your mind. Example? "f*beep*k you". It's that obvious. Fuck. I said it.

Patch 2.4.3 is out. I discovered that in my lunch break (yes, how sad. I sat down at WoW in my 1hr lunch break). Patch 2.4.3 means lvl 30 mounts. Which in turn means that my tauren gets his own Kodo without the mountless, transportation depraved tedium of 30 - 40 leveling. Also, my night elf druid should get his cat soon. Huzzah!

Grave was my disappointment, however, when I found out that Dvalinn, the tauren, was a few gold short and after having sold what was to be sold, two gold still were needed. As this is being written, some twenty items lie in the Auction House, waiting for would-be kodo money providers. I expect my moolah to be plentiful by the time I get home this evening.

We shall see...

...well, actually only I shall see because no one bothers to read this and those who might will hardly be interested. How futile.

I'm a subscriber now and it feels good. I applied for a multimedia and graphics design school today but feel rather skittish about the whole thing. It's on the other side of my (relatively small) country you see. I'm hoping that I'll be accepted into the School of Multimedia here in Reykjavík and feel more secure about that one. Anyway, subscriber. Yes! I just got a three month subscription to start with and see what it'd be like but so far I don't see a reason to become a full time subscriber. Highly recommended by me then, after a little less than a day's experience. And I also made a new avatar. Yeaowzah! Cheers
