Finally keeping up with new art people are puttin' in, and that's good.

Let's see, oh! I recently acquired Gran Turismo 4 (Shut up, I know it's older) and Pokemon Ranger (Nintendo, you sly bastards, stop addicting me with your games), both of which are insanely good.

GT4 (ahahahaa looks like GTA somewhat 8D) is so completely over my head. To clarify, the racing games I've played mostly were:

Mario Kart 64 (N64)
Star Wars Episode 1: Racer (N64)
Burnout (GCN)
Burnout 2 (Xbox)
Burnout 3 (Xbox)
Burnout: Revenge (Xbox 360)
Mario Kart DS (DS)
Crusin' USA (N64)

Compare those to the gameplay and level of detail in Gran Turismo 4, and you'll see what I mean by "over my head".

However, the massive collection of cars (Game box says "Over 650"), and the fact that it's fun combine to offset the somewhat steep learning curve for a newbie like myself.

At least I don't have to pay to repair my car.

That'd get expensive, with my driving.

Pokemon Ranger is just... wow. You don't even have to like Pokemon much to enjoy it, and playing the past games, while it'll help with recognition of Pokemon types and such, really isn't a requirement to understand its fundamentals- similar to the way that Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon and the plethora of mainstream Pokemon RPGs are pretty much plug-and-play for your brain. No previous knowledge required.

That said, Ranger is NOT for everybody. If you dislike using the DS stylus for any reason, than don't get Ranger, as the basic gameplay doesn't just benefit from the stylus- it requires it.

For those who don't know, the game places you in the brand-new region of Fiore, where you arrive with the intention of becoming a 'Pokemon Ranger', a kind of all-purpose peacekeeper/police officer/Pokemon specialist. The game's guide says this: "A new breed of Pokemon specialist has arrived on the scene. These formidable Pokemon protectors are committed to one goal- protecting the inhabitants of the Fiore region, and making sure that the symbiotic relationship between Pokemon and people continues to exist in the most beneficial way possible."

The game doesn't take long before it introduces you to its capture system. Where in the standard RPGs, you captured Pokemon in various balls, in Ranger, the Pokeballs are done away with. In place of them is a very creative new device called the Capture Styler. This device controls a 'Capture Disc', which is what you'll be controlling with the stylus in-game. The method of capture is simple and yet complex, at the same time- using the stylus, draw loops around the target Pokemon without touching them until you capture them.

The complexity comes in many forms. First of all, different Pokemon require different amounts of loops. For example, Rattata and Seedot only require one loop to capture. Magnemite requires two, whereas Meowth requires five. Some Pokemon require quite a good number of the loops to capture; Snorlax requires 21, Psyduck 32(!), Metagross 30, and so on.

This is compounded by several things. Speed, for one; while Flygon only requires six loops to capture, its speed is incredible, making it extremely difficult to loop six times before it manages to escape. Pokemon can also attack your Capture Disc; the Styler only has so much health ("Energy" in-game), and while it can level up to increase both the length of the line you can draw as well as the size of the Energy bar, it does sustain damage from attacks, to varying extents. A Bagon, for example, might take off one or two bars with a single attack; Salamence, meanwhile, takes off around four bars with its attacks. On top of all this, some Pokemon- mainly water-types and Diglett/Dugtrio- can only be caught while surfaced.

How do you combat this?

Aside from timing and skill, the game assists you by providing you a "Partner Pokemon"- either Plusle or Minun, depending on the gender of your character. Along with your Partner Pokemon are Friend Pokemon- captures made while on a mission or adventuring. These Pokemon can assist you in various ways while in battle- for example, Plusle/Minun comes with the Discharge ability, which is charged by looping Pokemon, and when used, stuns most Pokemon temporarily, often long enough for you to get a good amount of loops in.

Sound complicated? It's not, really. Take my word for it- buy or rent Pokemon Ranger as soon as you get the chance!

Authors Note:

This chapter is being written after details that render the facts within it and the chapters prior to it inaccurate and even, in a sense, posthumous in the cases of characters Jurg, Fudd, Dunas (Who is indefinitely retired at the moment, and would be a Level 60 Dark Knight now anyway), Mathilias, Livlovburndie, and Kyavi. Fudd retired from Final Fantasy XI last year, Mathilias character is now under new management, and Kyavi, Jurg, and Livlov have all been missing for extreme periods of time. Were I to update this to current characters, Davion (Level 66 Tarutaru White Mage) would replace Dunas, Gavyn (Level 75 Elvaan Thief) would be altered, Gaanbaan would remain, Ayamun would remain, Tellmok would remain, Jurg would be removed and replaced with Charliedog (Level 75 Hume Paladin), Fudd would be removed and replaced with Gigan (Level 75 Galka Dark Knight), Kyavi would be removed and replaced with Shelbelle (Level 75 Mithra Red Mage), Mathilias would be removed and replaced with Amolak (Level 64 Hume Samurai), Livlovburndie would be removed and replaced with Grimore (Level 75 Hume Black Mage) and new characters would be added: Kryton (Level 75 Hume Beastmaster), Erkis (Level 68+ Hume Summoner) and Vale (Level 70+ Hume Dark Knight). I may eventually rewrite this story to reflect the massive changes that its cast have undergone, as well as to reflect the newly added Treasures of Aht Urghan expansion areas. B) 3,164 New Messages. x_x; I'll look atcher artwork, but folks, I really honestly don't have time to leave a comment on everything. If I see something I really have to say something about, I will, but otherwise, I'll look at it and then delete the message.
C) Starting to get the hang of Paint Shop Pro. Yay. But the tablet sits unloved, and I've got to practice with it in PSP and OC, so if anyone knows a good way to practice aside from general use, please, let me know.
D) Uh... oh! Oh, right. I've given up on the idiotic webcomic idea because no one really seemed to like it. Back to the old style for me. I wasn't very good at the comic anyway.
E) I feel like I should mention that anyone who's supported me in the past- by supported, I mean left an encouraging comment, given me advice, or just been friendly- thank you from the bottom of my heart. I don't know if you still read my Journals, or look at what I submit, but thanks for the kind words.
F) My apologies to anyone I've insulted or put out by my art (I am a terrible, awful hack, I know. ; ; ) my comments, or my absences, which despite all my efforts continue to plague me. I'm truly sorry.

I've been working on the next part of my FFXI story. A lot has changed since the last part, and I'm considering a new one as soon as the current story's been told. Up to you guys and what you want me to do (tell me in your replies to this journal.)
Of course, CarbyDun has been changing in my perception of him. Expect to see some changes when I get around to drawing him again.

Typing this as Hurricane Wilma, yet another amazing (and kind of annoying) force of nature tears across Florida.

So, first off, I ain't getting pictures of this though I want to. You just don't really do that kind of thing.
Now-
School's been keeping me busy again.

Power went out right as I reached this point.
Anyway, hopefully it'll come back on soon. I'll keep typing.
What a disturbing feeling, though... the air gets so still, the electric buzz from the house around you- gone.
Here's hoping it's nothing major. FPL (Florida Power and Light) can't come out in this to turn it back on.
Rain and wind are getting pretty bad out there. I'm not going to change anything I type right now. This is just what I feel like doing, because the power's out.
It may be moving fast, but it knocked out power anyway. I just want the thing to get it over with.

In one 60+ page thread on the PA forums, readers were sharing their faxes, emails and phone calls to the Florida Bar which called for an investigation into Jack Thompsons practices.
Ars Technica got in touch with the Florida Bar and found that according to a spokesperson, the letters and faxes have been received and forwarded to the disciplinary committee.

I don't expect you to read this. Just my lil' rant.
First off, I want to say that I sincerely hope no one flames me for this. I intend to sum up what's been going on to the best of my ability, and then present a possible message to him (From myself) and ask your opinions.

Jack Thompson. Anti-gaming fanatic. He's been on CNN several times, putting down games, and claiming that video games are "murder training simulators". As a rule, we tell him, as politely as we can, to go shut his mouth.

In recent news, Thompson made a so-called "Modest Proposal" to the game industry.

Thompson's proposal:
"Jack Thompson will give $10,000 to charity if any videogame company makes and releases a game based on a scenario he created.
Miami, Florida Attorney Jack Thompson, a long-time outspoken critic of violent and sexually explicit videogames, has done something totally unexpected. Thompson today actually proposed a violent videogame, and will pay $10,000 to the favorite charity of Paul Eibeler (the Chairman of Take-Two Interactive) if any videogame company will "create, manufacture, distribute, and sell a video game in 2006" based on a scenario he created.""

However, when a group of modders determined to call him on it, as well as get the charity money where it belonged, made the game...
This happened.

"A team of GTA modders called the Fighting Hellfish has created a San Andreas mod for the PC that Jack Thompson could have designedthat is, if he included himself as the vengeful father he proposed earlier, on a murderous rampage through the video-game industry. And there you have the story of JT and his Banman alter ego in Defamation of Character: A Jack Thompson Murder Simulator.

But thats not all: not only is he unsatisfied with the mod, he claims his earlier proposal was merely intended as satire, to highlight the patent hypocrisy and recklessness exhibited by the video game industrys willingness to target cops, women, homosexuals, and other groups with some of their violent games. (So the $10K offer to charity was satire, too?)"

Now, honestly, this wasn't unexpected. (Please read the articles by following the URLs and links provided for the full stories) however, it did make a lot of people angry. Most notably, Tim Buckley of Ctrl-Alt-Del, "Gabe" and "Tycho" of Penny Arcade, and Scott Raimsoomair of VGCats. While Gabe and Tycho have been after Jack for a while- including posting the details of a phone conversation, ridiculing him with a comic, and marketing "I Hate Jack Thompson" T-Shirts- their next move was the greatest stab at the man so far, as well as the one that earns the most respect from me.
Read the later posts on the front page for the details. Ignore the first one...

"It was only a matter of time until a mod team took Jack Thompson's disgusting revenge fantasy and made it flesh - and, just as I suggested, it was deemed insufficient.

Thompson now claims that his repellent suggestion was "satire," and we must conclude that his financial offer was also satire, some new breed of satire apparently that I'm sure is just hilarious to people in need.

You know what, Jack? We're going to be the men you're not. You said that your insulting, illusory ten thousand dollars would go to the charity of Paul Eibeler's choice. Ok, let's start out by saying, that "Sugar We're Going Down" blasted through my skull this morning, when instead of hittnig "Snooze", I hit the volume. All. The. Way. Up. If anyone heard it this morning around 11:00, I am deeply sorry. Now to listen to something else so it'll stop playing in my head. My ears keep ringing. X_X
Next, I might have done something very, very stupid. I made a deal with the higher powers (Read: My parents) that if I could accomplish a set amount of schoolwork in five days (a lot of work, too) by setting my own schedule, then I could keep setting my own schedule.
If I couldn't? I'd not only never be allowed to try it again, but I'd lose the use of any computer in the house for recreational activity for a month. That means no dA, no Furcadia, no AIM, no nothing. Now I feel stupid. I keep running into problems getting the work done. Like the long division of polynomials in Algebra II that I have no friggen' clue how to do. All things considered, that was a very very bad move, I think. I now have, counting today, 3 days left. Oh, and at least 15 of those accursed assignments left. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.

I for one am VERY interested in this new design. Think for a moment about the possibilities. A lot of 3rd-party developers, like EA and Ubisoft, are saying that they're interested.

Well, where to begin. The lightsaber drew kids to it like flies to a candle, and their parents probably got some great pictures.
Now that I've said that, let's get to the point.
While I've made an effort to post appropriate pictures in my gallery, I should warn you that DragonCon includes many costumes which are more... risque. Example: My dad says he saw (and I don't doubt him) a woman, a good-looking woman (thank the Lord) wearing nothing but paint, save a cloth over her, ah, private area. That doesn't include her breasts, which were (according to my dad) simply painted.
Just a warning- you WILL see outfits like that at D-Con. Plus some of them that I haven't had the pleasure of uploading, such as a shop that sold black-and-red leather 'Succubus' costumes. Right near the one with the whips. Yep.

Second order of business- Gift Art. I'm actually working on some things for people (go figure.) but there's no way to know if I'll ever finish. I'm mostly afraid of butchering people's characters with my awful drawing abilities, so it might take a while until I'm ready to put any UP, on the off chance I get something done. I can't draw bodies. Or legs or arms. Note how all of the characters that I show from the neck down are wearing robes. There's a reason for that- without them, the drawing would be even more craptastic.

This is it, people, I'm typing this from my 42nd floor hotel room at the 73-floor Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel!
DragonCon starts today!!!!!!!!
I put up a single pic so far, I'll have more when I get back to my hotel room tonight.
One of the prizes is a CAR, yes, a real working CAR for winning a tourney in a brand-new game called Anachronism. I may have spelled that wrong.
Two hotels (The Marriot Marquis and the Hyatt) as well as the Peachtree Plaza Mall are playing host to this massive convention.
I've seen all kinds of people. I've had great food even though I only ate one meal here in Atlanta so far (I may have to move here when I'm older... this city is awesome...) I bet I'll have a great time in DragonCon, and I'll update later. BTW, if you're ever in Atlanta, I can reccomend Trader Vic's restaurant for great food and drinks, as well as an awesome, friendly atmosphere. Try a Mai Tai (or a Virgin Mai Tai for all you who are like me, that is, underage) for a great fruity drink. Enjoy the sliced pork appetizer as your actual meal, and round off with a delicious serving of Chinese Steamed Vegetables and maybe a dessert. I'll actually put up a picture of the Pork and the neat little sauce dish it came with, because I want to torment you people like that.
Well, I have to say, I was worried for a moment. The Westin may be an amazing hotel, but the door locked us out last night, someone had to come reprogram it.

S'not my favorite... but yes, I have met a GM in the game, but he's not Gabriel... I think I was still thinking about a Penny Arcade comic when I typed his name. I believe I met [GM] Stormhawk or sommat like that. He was nice, really great guy, though I haven't seen him. What happened was some idiot claimed the Spook, and just healed himself, never letting go of hate... basically griefing and being a jerk. I reported him, and thank god the GMs talked to him, made him let go of it. FFXI players, you know who Spook is, and have probably camped it once or twice. I've never gotten the drop .

It's incredible, how a book like "Musketeers" could capture me almost completely as a 6th grader, but I just can't get into "Lord of the Flies" now, in tenth. Simply amazing

Anyway.

The "yay" would be a few things.
First off, looks like I get lucky. The Florida Virtual School Program has accepted me, and for my 10th-grade year, I get to do all my classes at home. Still the same classes, but it's at my pace, without any annoying classmates. I'm kinda going to miss my chorus group, though. Anyway, this means you have to put up with me all year.

Second, I am nearing 200 pageviews... and while it's not much (I know people who are past 30,000...) I'm proud of it. Thanks, everyone, and I hope you like my writing... because the way things are going, you're not gonna see my drawing for a good length of time. On the other hand, I'm not really proud of my drawing skills, and my handwriting... let's not get into that. The point is, I'm working hard to perfect an image of my character, Dunas. He's... well, a ghost and I believe that is because I can't draw faces or arms very well. Hands... well, sort of. Hair screws me up, and legs are a little hard for perspective. Believe me I'm trying. Anyway he basically wears a hood-cape dealie, a shirt (no sleeves), a pair of gloves which basically float without any real issue as far as impossible arm positions. Oh, yeah, I've been experimenting with long pants, which seems to work ok, but I can't get the shoes right. Anyway, if someone can figure enough of that out to get an idea, and then draw him, I would be in said someone's debt for a while. Like, a long while. Yeah.

Summertime in Florida, I would have thought I could get some work done on that story during the day. Well, I thought wrong. For one thing, Kire doesn't log into AIM (where we would do most of our work) until 3:00-3:30 PM EST, so during the day I don't have him to give me the information I might need. Then, of course, I have to be helping my father put up a Pool. Now, a pool in FL summertime sounds excellent, right? Yeah. Well, through a lot of rainy days, we have gotten the ground level (I hope it still is) and the foam (for the underside) picked up, as well as the parts of the pool itself, and some blocks for a walkway. Here's the best part: We started on this about a week ago. So, can't be here working on other ideas during the morning (gets too hot to work, in my opinion, about 10:00-11:00 AM.). Then, of course, I have Florida's wonderful Virtual School program to "attend". Don't get me wrong. FLVS is actually something I would prefer to do instead of normal school anyway. But considering some of the workload... it gets to where that can take up a while too.
Sorry about the rant. Anyway...
