“Funeral for a Fighter”
Wake up, _____! The command rang in my ears, though it was not spoken aloud. This is a bad dream, that’s all. But I didn’t need the pinch to know that this was real. I was sitting in the back of a white Volkswagen, my heart repeatedly breaking and tears falling fast. Nothing would ever be the same again; at least, that’s how it felt. I kept hearing the words “Oma died…” echoing inside my head, over and over again. It was New Year’s Day. Well, night, actually. My parents, sister, and I had just left the bowling alley. “Family emergency,” my dad had told the person at the front desk. In the car, my mom told us the tragic news: her mother – our grandmother – had just died. Oma had been diagnosed with lung cancer two years previous, and now she was gone. Everything had changed.

Six months later, sitting in the back of the same white Volkswagen, _____ looked out the window and saw a sign for “Wentworth by the Sea Marina”. Two cars followed the Volkswagen as it turned into the marina’s parking lot, both cars carrying relatives of _____ and her family. The one directly behind them held her three cousins, aunt, and uncle, and the car behind that one contained _____’s great-aunt and great-uncle, and her grandmother’s cousin. Today was the day that the large family would bury _____ _____ (_____) _____, more commonly known as _____, at sea, just as she wished. She had another request regarding her burial: her ashes would somehow make it to Germany, her homeland.
The smell of salty seawater invaded the nostrils of the family as they stepped out of their cars, leaving no room for other aromas. The sea breeze whipped through their hair as they walked down the dock with plastic bags full of flowers in hand. The flowers and raffia in the bags were to be made into a wreath of flowers, thrown out to sea with the ashes. The family sat down at a large, wooden, circular table to weave the flowers together, all five children huddling close to their great-aunt, watching and learning.
“Your Oma and I used to do this all the time when we were younger,” _____ said to her great-nieces and great-nephews. She gave a weak smile, and _____ knew that her great-aunt was trying hard not to cry… Not yet.

My last memory of my Oma was on my tenth birthday, when I went to Kentucky to get my ears pierced for the first time. I had said goodbye at the end of that trip, not knowing that “goodbye” was forever that time. I was never allowed to go see my grandmother when she was sick, though my mother went frequently to make sure she was okay and to make arrangements for after Oma died. “She wants you to remember her as she was when you last saw her,” was the explanation. I completely respected Oma’s request, but I wish I had one last chance to say a final goodbye.

The family boarded the boat, _____ holding the completed flower wreath and _____’s uncle carrying the box that contained his mother’s ashes. They all sat down on the benches on the deck of the boat as the captain started up the boat. It zoomed away from the dock in a matter of minutes. The family sat in silence for thirty minutes on the way out to the “burial point”, only interrupted by the infrequent complaints about the ice cold sea spray splashing the faces of those on board.
The boat began to slow and finally came to a complete halt. The adults of the family stood up, the children following suit. They all crowded around the side of the boat, waiting for the box holding the ashes of their loved one to be opened.
Inside the box were the ashes; nothing fancy. Just the cremated remnants of _____ _____ (_____) _____ inside a plastic bag. The bag was passed around the large group so everyone had a chance to pour some of the ashes into the water. _____, _____’s sister, _____, their cousin, _____, _____’s husband, all went first. _____, _____’s son-in-law, and _____, her daughter-in-law, went after them. _____’s grandchildren went next: _____, _____, _____, _____, and _____. And finally, _____’s children, _____ and _____, turned the bag upside-down and emptied it into the sea. Everyone then grabbed hold of the woven wreath of flowers and tossed it out to sea, too, in the dead center of where all the ashes had landed. Watching it float on the water, so peacefully, brought a wave of tears spilling out over everyone’s eyelashes.
Half an hour later, the boat was tearing across the sea again, its passengers still crying hard. The briny sea spray was now being mixed with the tears glistening on the mourning faces. There was lots of hugging on the way back from the burial.
