This is an extremely important ritual in many neo-Pagan Witchcraft traditions. During the ritual the high priestess of the coven enters a trance and becomes the Goddess, which is symbolized by the moon. This transformation is accomplished with the help of the high priest, who invokes, or draws down, the Goddess into the high priestess.

The origins of the ceremony can be traced to classical times. Ancient Thessalian witches were believed to control the moon, according to an old tract: "If I command the moon, it will come down; and if I wish to withhold the day, the night will linger over my head; and again, if I wish to embark on the sea, I need no ship, and if I wish to fly through the air, I am free of my weight."

In the modern rite, the high priestess has the option of reciting the Charge of the Goddess, a poetic address written be Doreen Valiente, a high priestess in the Gardnerian tradition or delivering a spontaneous address.

Drawing Down the Moon is one of the most serious and beautiful rituals in neo-Pagan Witchcraft. Depending on the altered state of consciousness of the high priestess and the ceremonial energy raised, the words that come forth can be moving, poetic and inspiring. During the Drawing Down the Moon, many women connect with the power of the Goddess and therefore with the power within themselves.

To capture more of the essence of this rite the description of it given by Margot Adler in her book Drawing Down the Moon will be paraphrased. After listening to a tape called Drawing Down the Moon sent to her from a coven in Essex, Adler writes: "I did not know it then, but in this ritual, one of the most serious and beautiful in the modern Craft, the priest invokes into the priestess (or, depending on your point of view, she evokes from within herself) the Goddess or Triple Goddess, symbolized by the phases of the moon. She is known by a thousand names, and among them were those I had used as a child. In some Craft rituals the priestess goes into a trance and speaks; in other traditions the ritual is a more formal dramatic dialogue, often of intense beauty, in which, again, the priestess speaks, taking the role of the Goddess. In both instances, the priestess functions as the Goddess incarnate, within the circle."

On the tape the background music sounded as if it might have been Brahms. The voices of the man and woman possessed an English accent. Clear were the words of the invocation:


Listen to the words of the Great Mother, who was of old also called Artemis, Astarte, Melusine, Aphrodite, Diana, Brigit, and many more other names…"
Judging from Adler's descriptions this one ritual of Drawing Down the Moon can, and sometimes does, embody many of the major activities of modern Witchcraft. Generally the ritual is conducted within a circle, sometimes called a magic circle. The circle is a place set apart; its physical location makes no difference, because in the mind it becomes a sacred place through its casting and purification. It is a placed between worlds where the gods are met.
Within the circle psychic power is raised, a work that is known as "raising the cone of power." This is accomplished through music, chanting, and dancing that can at times combine the wills of the participants. When the priest or, more often, the priestess senses the cone of power has been raised she can focus and direct it with the mind toward its destination. One such destination, or purpose, is the psychic healing of someone who is sick, or the purpose might be to seek something which is needed by someone.

This is the essential reason why gods and goddesses are invited into the circle. When the moon is drawn down, the high priestess often enters a trance in which the Goddess possesses her. Acting as the incarnate Goddess, the priestess speaks and acts as the Goddess. The circle's psychic power now becomes Goddess power. Frequently this is thought of as a mystical experience, and possibly it could be class as monistic mysticism. Similarly, when the God force is drawn into the circle, the high priest becomes the God incarnate. The latter ritual is known as Drawing Down the Sun or Drawing Down of the Horned God or Calling Down the Moon.

The state of the altered consciousness that the high priest or priestess experience during the ritual determines the after effect that is felt, some priestesses have said they feel the presence of the Goddess within them for days afterwards. Others have reported seeing changes within some persons following such rituals, but also say there are pretenders.

Imbolg is also called IMBOLC, Oimelc, Candlemas, Feast of Lights, Groundhog Day (in USA) and Brigit's Day and this is so because the original connection to the daughter of the Dagda (Bríd) was lost or more correctly displaced by succeeding religions.

St Brigid like Saint Patrick was never canonised by the Pope of the Catholic Church. She was known (as was Patrick) as Naomh Bríd or Holy Brigid. The Naomh meaning Holy was also applied to Patrick and many others. The Catholic Church in Ireland decided to translate Naomh as Saint as it suited their purpose. The famous Brigid was said to be born in 453 at Faughart, County Louth, Ireland and died 1 February 523 at Kildare, Ireland. Her death is reported as being of natural causes and she was buried in Downpatrick, in east Northern Ireland with Saint Patrick and Saint Columba. Her head was removed to Jesuit church in Lisbon, Portugal. No Pope would call her a Saint. Her name means fiery arrow (= brigid).

But like so many other things from our deep history the truth lies underneath the written word of the monastic scribes. It is not possible to fix the date of the death of this holy Brigid because there were no calendars at the time. The current calendar in use by the “white civilised” world was only agreed fully in the 1800’s. Before that date there was utter confusion and no system of dating days of birth for annual celebrations was available for anyone. Details on this system of False Time is at [link]

By calculating the astronomical regression of the night skies astronomers have shown the true date of Christ’s actual birth. This was in March 4bc and not at December 0 or 1 or -1 but four years before his claimed birth. His March birth was shifted about 800 years ago to its December 25th date to suit the politics of the time. Deeper again - we see that our holy Brigid was a monastic diversion of devotion from the native Bríd, daughter of the Dagda to her catholic replacement.

This is her story -Brigid, Breo Saighead, Brid, Brighid. Meaning - "Fiery Arrow or Power". Bríd is a pre Celtic three-fold goddess, the daughter of The Dagda, and the wife of Bres of the Formorians. Brighid's three aspects are
(1) Fire of Inspiration as patroness of poetry,
(2) Fire of the Hearth, as patroness of healing and fertility
(3) Fire of the Forge, as patroness of smithcraft and martial arts.

As wife to Tuireann she bore three sons Creidhne, Luchtaine and Giobhniu. She has an apple orchard in the Otherworld to which bees travel to obtain it's magical nectar.

The old legends of ancient Ireland tell us that on the eve of Imbolg, The Cailleach, or Veiled One (Hag aspect) drank from the Well of Youth at sunrise. Because of this the Hag was changed into her Maiden aspect and recognised as the young goddess called Brigid. Brid is the patroness and her father Dagda is the patron of the Celtic Druids of then and now.

The timing for the celebration of Imbolg as given in Irelands Druidschool is explained in depth at [link] In its most basic - there were no clocks, no calendars and the passage of time was measured in Ireland by the penetration of a sunbeam into designed passages in stone cairns to exactly light up a section of a stone with carvings upon it. This happens even today so the ancestral calendar is still accurate. The same solar alignment that determines the correct time for Imbolg is also the exact same alignment for Samhain. This means if you were to stand outside of Cairn ‘L’ at Sliabh na Callighe and look 117* east of north you would see the sun rise over the Lambay Volcano to shine in through the passage and onto the Quartz standing stone inside on Imbolg and on Samhain. There is only one cairn in Ireland with a standing stone inside it and it just happens to be made of Quartz and to take the morning sunbeam on Samhain when the Sun rises at 10* of Scorpio and on Imbolg when the Sun rises at 10* of Aquarius.

O Morrigan, we call your name
Across the dusty years.
You speak to us, of blood and lust.
You show us all our fears.
You are a goddess, old and wise.
Of holy power you have no dearth.
Beneath your wings: Black, red and white,
We learn of death and birth.

You walk about, this ancient land,
Your hungers raw and clear.
You make the crops, grow rich and strong,
As well your geese and deer.
A flirting maid, a lusty hag,
A mother of great girth:
Without the touch, of your black wings,
We cannot heal the earth.

You float upon, a blood red wave,
Of swords and spears and knives.
Your voice inspires, fear and dread,
That you'll cut short our lives.
You try the warriors', courage sore,
Our inner souls unearth.
Without the touch, of your red wings,
We cannot know our worth.

You fly above, the silver clouds,
To Manannan's shining Gate.
You lead the dead, along that path,
to meet our final fate.
The joke's on us, we find within,
A land of laughter and of mirth.
Without the touch, of your white wings,
We cannot have rebirth.

The Morrigan is a War Goddess and is sometimes considered to be part of a triad of War Goddesses, the other two being Badb and
Nemain/Macha. She is a Goddess of battle, turmoil and fertility........

She is one of the Tuatha Dé Danann ("Tribe of the goddess Danu") and she was involved in the downfall of the Firbolg at the First Battle of Mag Tuireadh and the Fomorians at the Second Battle of Mag Tuireadh........

BEFORE THEY FALL

A million sunsets
Have I seen
With my arms spread wide
I embraced each day
Animals never seen before
There were thousands
They are no-more
Mankind I watched
As it passed me by
I stood and watched
As my off-spring died
Today life changed
As I hit the ground
Twisted and broken
My rein had to end
An oldgrowth tree
Once tall and proud
Like those in Sherwood
Or in Clouds
Don't cry for me
I am no more
Save the others
Before they fall

Have had this poem on my fridge for ages, I think this is so beautifully written and captures the spirit of the tree so well.........
