Hiiiii,

Aahhhh, it's been almost a YEAR that I've written my last journal! Can't believe it!!!
And I still haven't re-subscribed... as we say in French : ça craint !

I've been so busy working these last months that I didn't realize time was passing so fast...
Just to sum up the situation : Until last year I was doing jobs that I didn't like (finance stuff). So I've worked a lot to change and it requires lots of energy and patience. Now I cannot say my situation is fully satisfying but I at last started another job in journalism departement. In fact it's been quite a while I've been writing articles for them, but the difference is that now I'm paid for it (not very much, though). So now I'm still busy but I will find a way to organize my work-time better.
But you know, watching movies and writing articles about them is soooo cool !

I didn't draw very much these last months, at least didn't finish any draw. My last finished one is my portrait of Azumi (Aya Ueto). From that time, I've started a pencil one - had to get back to pencil after a fully digital portrait - but it's not finished. In fact, I don't know how to finish it : there is one character on the left of the paper, and I like it, but there's nothing on the right. Every attempt to make another one has failed. Maybe because it wasn't meant to be a finished drawing : originally, I was just drawing to pass time, without really thinking, on a piece of paper. But then I started to enjoy what I was doing. And now I finished this character, there is a big blank on the right...
I'll try again to make something anyway, and I'll post it. Or I'll post it even before doing this second character, I don't know...

And I have many deviations to comment, too ! I saw that many beautiful ones were waiting. Right now, I have 1990 Deviations, 123 Messages and 35 comments to reply to... Sorry everybody for the delay. I cannot promess I'll comment everything but I'll try to do my best to visit every of my friends' page.

See you,
I just wanted to apologise for the delay on commenting your deviations and replying to messages! I've been very busy these days, writing articles and stuff... So I couldn't come on DA as often as usual.
I wanted all of you to know that I will comment your artworks as soon as possible. I already had a look at the 345 thumbnails (!) waiting to be clicked on and I saw many wonderful pictures!

Reading: "Le Dit de Tianyi" by François Cheng
Watching: My current obsession is Tadanobu Asano

Yeah, I saw Brian!!! Let me tell you about the context though...

I was at the Deauville Asian Film Festival from 03/10 to 03/13 (it started on 03/09) with for our webzine dvdrama. After a few administrative stuff (you know how French is) we had to do, we got the pass to get everywhere as journalists.

It was a very beautiful festival, the movie that were selected were better than last year, and we saw many great movies. I guess my favourite ones were:
- Kim Ki Duk's last movie "3-Iron" (french title is "Locataires" and it will be released in April in France, don't miss it!)
- "Survive Style 5+", a delirious japanese movie starring Tadanobu Asano
- "Electric Shadows", a very moving Chinese movie by a new director named Xiao Jiang. I cried at the end...

Other than that we had the chance to see Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle". Unfortunately Stephen Chow couldn't come so he left a message for the audience that we could see just before the screening,

As for the jury... hehehe (please, fans of Placebo, keep reading). There were two juries, one for the "official" competition, and one for another competition called "Action Asia". As if action movies were not as valuable, but well, at least we can see several action movies.
AND our dear Mr Molko was part of the jury "Action Asia", giving awards to the action movies. Two movies had an award because apparently they couldn't agree: "Arahan" had the main award, and "Survive Style 5+" had a special award.

Since we were here as journalists, we could interview a few people. Unfortunately Brian didn't wish to make any interview, probably because he mainly came to watch movies. And you know, I won't blame him for that: he was one of the most serious members of the jury, we saw him at many screenings. I was surprised because I had heard that the other years, some jury members were only watching the movies on video at their hotel. At least he and a few others were watching the movies with us, the audience. Every time I saw him in the theater, I think he was sitting next to Alain Berberian.

Caroline and I interviewed a few people. We interviewed Japanese director Takashi Miike (who made "Audition", "Ichi the killer")... I was so impressed to meet this strange guy I thought it wouldn't happen but we were informed we had an appointment just the day before, so I couldn't sleep during the night! But it went very well
We also interviewed Chinese director Fruit Chan, and also Chinese director Xiao Jiang. The interview of Miike is already available on dvdrama, but the other ones will be released very soon.
You can already read Caroline's report on the festival, btw. Of course it is in French...

We were also invited to a party celebrating the opening of a new French dvd collection called "Asian Star". And of course there was all the journalists there but also the jury and movie makers... It was fun! And Mr Molko was there Hehe, i wouldn't have interrupted his conversations to talk to him (i'm too shy, and anyway I didn't know what to say this is not the place where you can say "hey, I'm a big fan!!!"). But I was just next to him for a few minutes (he was conversing with a woman and I was talking to a journalist just next to them) and I can confirm you girls that he is definitely as cute as he is on the pictures Not very tall though, something like 1m65, and very thin too. He looks like a nice guy too, very warm with his friends as far as I could observe (yes I observed, trying not to be noticed while doing it ).

As for the pictures, I took some at the award ceremony on t...

Other than that, I have a question to post to French folks here:

For those who can read French, my sister *CarolineL and I had an interview with Jet Li (yeah, that Jet Li!) for the webzine DVDRAMA, and it was published today!

Jet Li was in Paris for the promotion of Danny The Dog, two weeks ago. He attended all the premieres, and accepted to have an interview with us in his suite (wow, this hotel was impressive ). We were the first ones to interview him this day, just before TF1.
It's very interesting as he describes how he worked to prepare his role and tells about his work with the other actors (Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins). We also asked him if he wanted to convey messages in his movies. At the end of the interview, he talks about his career in Hollywood and reveals his next plans...

He was very nice and warm during the interview, we couldn't stop him at the end (but the publicist was there to tell us it was over!). Since he knew we had seen the movie, he asked us if we liked it after we finished. It was funny because he looked happy that we liked it, but when I told him his acting was very good in Danny The Dog, he said "thank you" but looked quite embarrassed That guy is afraid of compliments

Hi everybody,

Hope you're all in vacation now!

What i'm doing now? Nothing... watching movies, writing, drawing, reading... I've finished my self portrait now so i might come back to my own characters.

As for movies, i watched "Hidalgo" yesterday and i must say that it was a good surprise: the movie was beautiful, Viggo's acting was very good, there were all these beautiful sceneries, and the horse was such a cute character.... We could feel his relationship with the man.
I also discovered African movies from Mali, through the filmography of director Souleymane Cissé. Four of his movies were released last week on DVD in France, and they are actually all very good. I don't know which one i prefered, "Yeelen" was visually the most beautiful, but "Finye" was the most refreshing i guess. Anyway, the four movies were very interesting as far as Mali's society (which i didn't know anything about) and mentality are concerned, and both acting and directing were great. It's so amazing to see that a director can make powerful movies with such low budgets, while so many crappy blockbusters are invading our theaters... Not that I have anything against blockbusters (hey i love Spidey!), but sometimes i think movie makers should think more before investing so much... especially when others can do beautiful and interesting movies with almost nothing. And when it's so difficult to make a movie in some countries which cannot even have a real movie industry, whereas directors have so many things to say through art.

Back to holidays.
I still have a few things to buy before the day... what about you? I'll try not to finish on 24th december
Happy Christmas everybody!

Sorry for non french-speakers, this journal will be in French - better to express my current feelings.

Ah!

Hi everybody,

I've seen Alexander last tuesday, the last Oliver Stone movie.. Yeah it was before it came out in the States, hehe, that's the nice things when you work on a cinema-related webzine!

Anyway, here are my feelings about the movie.
Again, Oliver Stone made a controversial movie... I must say i'm a bit disappointed because it was not as spectacular as i had imagined, but it's not a bad movie either...

One of the big problem in this movie is this Anthony Hopkins character telling the story... When i saw the opening, i was like: "oh no... not a story teller again...". Then, since the whole Alexander story is a flash-back, and since there are flash-backs in this flash-back, it becomes confusing sometimes... And as far as Hopkins is concerned, i wish he would just stop his History lessons! it's good to remind us some History details because we are not all History experts, but sometimes it's redundant with what we see on the screen. Besides, Hopkins looks tired in this movie, hopefully he doesn't have a great part. His voice added to Vangelis' music... it's just so... heavy!
As for the action parts, the battle scenes disappointed me because it seems that Stone tried to shoot like Peter Jackson did in the LOTR trilogy, but didn't succeed to make them look as good as a Helm's Deep battle or a Pelennor fields battle... It's like you have two kinds of shots: the very wide angles where the characters appears as ants on the screen, and the very close shots where you simply cannot see what's going on. You don't even know where Alexander is during these battles so they don't have the expected impact in the character's development. Well... I'm a bit mean, i'm sure there is lots of work behind these scenes, and they are not bad scenes, but not as good as they should have been.
I think this kind of scenes are simple not for Oliver Stone, but that's just my opinion. Some people among those who were with me in the theater liked these battles.

The good points now... First of all, Colin Farell's interpretation is simply great. He really carries the movie on his shoulders and he brings greatness and humanity to his character at the same time. The other actors are great too, espcially Val Kilmer and Angelina Jolie, both very charismatic, and Jared Leto (the guy from Requiem for a Dream) who is very beautiful...
The romance between Alexander (Colin Farell) and Hephaïstion (Jared Leto) is probably one of the best things in the movie, though i guess this gay aspect will shock lots of people (I heard there were already people wanting to suit Stone for this ). For the girls who wander how far it goes, i won't play spoiler, but i'd say there is sensuality in this movie. Oliver Stone is a lot better in intimist scenes than in spectacular ones.

I'm looking forward to seeing how people will react to this movie. I'm also very curious about French people reactions, thinking of our current national debates.
Alexander is really not the masterpiece people could expect from its subject, but i think it's worth it.

Salut!

I'm baaack!!! My vacation was really great: i went to Los Angeles with my sister to visit a friend who came to visit us in Paris in August. We were at his house for almost two weeks, since we made a trip to San Francisco for about 2-3 days. Wow, i knew LA but it was the first time in San Francisco and it was really great, i'd love to come back!
I could hang out with many friends in LA and in SF, meet new people, eat good food (mainly Asian food ), do karaoke (korean karaoke are the best and the cheapest in LA!)... It was great, i wish i had more time!

Now i'm back to France... I could visit DeviantArt a few times in LA, but i couldn't answer all my messages since i had to use my friend's computer. Sorry for being late! I tried to reply to every comment and messages, hope i didn't forget any!
As for the deviations... Well it seems that my explorer is having a problem with loading them. When i come to my msg center, i can see the thumbnails first, but when i come back from the first deviation i checked, the thumbnails don't load anymore... Same if i click on these invisible thumbnails, the pictures won't load... So sorry if i'm late commenting, i could only check a few of them - same with the gallery of my new friends.
I'm trying to figure out what's happening. Hope it will be resolved soon!

A plus,

I'm currently in Los Angeles for holidays! yeah, i know, holidays are gone for most of you guys, but i haven't had a single day off since april so i think i deserve these two weeks
Sorry in advance if i don't reply everyday to my messages, i post from a friend's computer. I will try to read comments and messages everyday, though, and will do my best to reply when i come back. Also, i hope there is no strange character appearing in my messages since US keyboard is a bit different from French one...
Cheers,

Yeah, i am back again these days.. I had posted a journal entry a few weeks ago saying i was back, and then i didn't find the time to be there regularily (just came sometimes to see messages and deviations - many cool ones!).

So what did i do this summer?

I started a new job, which is actually going fine even if it's not exciting (i'm doing clearing in a big Stock Exchange company). And i started going to swimming pool every week.
I had a friend coming from Los Angeles for two weeks. He speaks French so well after only two years learning that i feel bad with my poor Chinese skills... (he also speaks English, Chinese, Japanese, German..).

I also went to theaters! I saw Spiderman2 five times (dear Tobey...), Dawn of the dead the remake twice, and i saw Cabin fever, Infernal affairs, The Bourne Supremacy (dear Matt...) which i plan to see again soon.

I didn't draw that much since i was feeling kind of discouraged. I just couldn't finish what i was starting. I finally drew my cat, and i feel better after finishing one drawing. I also have this portrait of a young Japanese actor to finish!
