I even working up to 10 hours a day.

My costume designer and her assistant are Firefly fans. We had a "girls" night which turned into a "make Lizzy (my roommate) watch Firefly" night
My roommate rocks.
I know how to make pasta (NOT raman noodles!)
I haven't had "time" to touch my sketchbook yet...I'll beat myself up about that later.
I've only read the first 3 Harry books...I'm behind.

I tried to make my Austin cookies last as long as possible...which was 3 days.

which reminds me: I need to make cookies.



...I have over 100 deviations to look at, and only about 15 minutes. I don't think I'll get caught...but I'm not a student and I've snuck onto their computers. On of my SIP friends goes to school here, so I'm "borrowing" his account...and there's a patrolling librarian.

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, "how heavy is this glass of water? "

Answers called out ranged from 8oz. to 20oz.

The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. "If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.
In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

He continued, "And that's the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on.
As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.
So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work/life down.
Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow.
Whatever burdens you're carrying now, put them down for a moment if you can.

And then he shared some ways of dealing with the burdens of life:

He was like, "you haven't checked the design board yet have you?"

"No"

"Well...go now. I'll hold up the stairs."

"k..."

Which I think is just a superb idea. She also mentioned that next year she thinks I will be as good a stitcher as any of her shop staff, and that she wants to take me on Summerstock with her next summer!! Ahhh! (For those who don't know what that is, it's where a bunch of professional theaters around the country hire design students to work for them for the summer, pay for housing and work...and just teach them a crapload of what it takes to make it. Professional experience = a must have on a resume to get a job...anywhere.)
So anyways, I'm super excited! As much as I love Montana...there's hardly any life for theater here. I need to get out.

Of course, when I told my mum, her look shot it down before I was even finished--and then she told me what she ALWAYS tells me: "your first responsibility has to be the restaurant."

What about MY life? Huh?? I absolutely refuse to be an indentured servant for the rest of my life. I fully understand the responsibility to help out with the family business, and the fact that I am paying for my tuition by working, but if this summer thing goes through and I actually get hired somewhere, I'm going. They can't hold me here forever. As much as they'd love to keep this a "family-run" business, my slavery is completely temporary.

Not to mention, it's JUST the summer. It's not like I'd be up and leaving forever. With no school to worry about, the rest of the family can totally keep up and handle it without me for a couple months. So I don't really see the problem...

I know Mum and Dad don't openly oppose my chosen major, but they certainly don't seem to be all whoop-de-do happy about it either. Neither seems to think there's much of a future in it. Maybe there is, maybe there isn't...but how the hell am I supposed to find out if they won't let me?
I doubt they would purposely set me up to fail...but what the hell ARE they trying to do? I didn't have any say in this restaurant business, why does it have to be my main priority?

*the evil, selfish, horribly bad daughter comes out*

If I can get a job and pay for my own tuition (those summer jobs pay REALLY good), by my own ethics I will be ruling out the whole "working for tuition" thing. They won't be able to hold tuition against me. Yay for that bit of freedom! The only problem: I'll be a horrible daughter abandoning her family and the family business, leaving them to die horrible starving deaths. You think I exaggerate? I think so too. But when you listen to the tone in mum's voice when she talks about it, that's what she's saying. The business, and family, is incapable of surviving without me working. How the hell does that make sense? I've no idea. It's not like I have a highly specialized job NO one else can fill. I mean, come on. My 10 year old brother can do my job as well as I can. And he loves it! Silly little kid...

So my current goal: bear with this life until next summer...and then break free like the little birdies caught in the walls of my house! (we took off part of the siding so they can fly away)

A side note: I would have gone with Wendy to Virginia this summer, but I actually cared about what mum and dad said when I asked them...I won't make that mistake next year.

Logically, breaks should feel longer too, no? No. Breaks feel shorter than they are, and school feel twice as long. I have given this a lot of thought, and I've worked out a huge long theoretical/philosophical explanation which actually makes sense in my head (but I'll spare you guys that glimps into the mush of my mind)

So anyways. I have 79 credits required for my BFA (not counting the upper gen eds I still need). I have 66 credits now--only 9 of which count towards my major. This is what happens when you don't know what you're doing with your life. So 70 credits for my major, plus *at least* 10 more for gen eds. 80 credits (minimum). Theoretically, if I took 20 credits each semester, I could be out in 2 years. But we all know that won't happen. I'll most likely end up taking about 15 credits per semester--less as my workload increases. Right now I have 7 classes, but only 15 credits. Oh my freaking gosh. I still can't get over it.
So, at 15 credits, I'll finish in 3 years. If I pop it down to a more realistic 12 credits plus work, shop time, volunteering, etc, I'll be out in 4 years.
However, I'm being strongly influenced to "get out" in the world and go for internships (like Disney, or New York productions). I know I'll have to leave sometime--there's just no real opportunities here for what I want to do. So, if I take a break in the middle somewhere to "get out" and get more experience, it may tack a year or more onto my time at the U.

6ish years doesn't seem too bad.

It's getting a job afterwards that really counts.

Ambition. That's what I need. The drive to want it more than the other 8,000 people who want it.
Ambition. That's what scares me. I'm not sure I have it--or at least, enough of it to make it count.
I know I love it. I know I want it. I know I can do the job.

I just don't know if I'll GET the job.

6 years is a long time...a lot can happen.

I think my problem is that I'm interested in too many things--I'm flighty. Psychology, philosophy, art, now theater (design). And that's only in my first 3 semesters. Right now, I can't even believe I was set on pharmacy throughout high school. I'd prepared for it. And I dropped it my first semester of college. It had been easy, like deciding to eat an apple instead of a worm.

So now it's costume design. I like to sew...and I want to sew for theater. But, even for a big production, there are never many positions to be filled in the shop. And there are SO many people more talented than me out there.

I finally know what I want, but I'm having serious doubts as to whether I'll ever have a job DOING what I want.

As one of my facebook groups says, "I picked a major I like, and one day I will probably be living in a box."

But I'll put this off until after graduation. For now, I'm just going to enjoy the ride. It'll be bumpy, I'll get stuck in some places...but I'm really looking forward to it. Costume design keeps me busy, and is just way too much fun.

Plus, now is coming along.

and if all else fails, I know how to use the industrial machines--the same ones I'm sure Nike uses in its sweat shops.

It's always good to have a back-up plan.

So...Katie is married! and she's off to Maine on Wednesday.
Dad actually danced (and got all dressed up...quite spiffy!) which was really cute. My uncle was the only one who cried during the father-daughter dance, so we made fun of him for the rest of the night.
I spent almost the whole wedding and reception holding David's (Katie's new husband) sister's 4 week old baby.
Lilly.
She's so adorable.
I want one.


Oh, and I just found out that I can be totally won over by mashed potatos. OMG, Ryan makes some WONderful mashed potatos. If he was straight I'd be completely in love with him.

Meanwhile, I'm doing everything. That's not usually such a big problem, in fact I usually work alone, but lately I've been a little sore and walking as been tricky sometimes. That hasn't stopped me though, and I can't tell you how much it ticks me off to see her gimping around just because she's lazy and doesn't want to work. At no other job could she just eat and lounge about and still expect to get paid. Seriously, after not doing anything all night, she really expected me to split the tips. I didn't. She threw a hissy.
Now, you might say, Oh maybe she really was sick! Yea...no. About a half hour in I wanted to test it, so I found her lying around in the back and told her a friend had called. She jumped right up and dashed out. So much for the nausea.

The worst is probably that Dad totally buys into her drama, and thinks my knee is a joke. Ha. Ha.

I swear, the only thing I really asked her to do tonight was dry out the sink-- after I'd cleaned tables, swept, mopped, washed and dried all the dishes and put them away, restocked the coolers, and done everything else for closing (not to mention taking all the orders, serving, taking money, etc)
Dry out the sink....she took a towel, smudged it about a bit, then went right back to singing Rent with the CD player. OMG. So I did it myself. Honestly. Am I overreacting??

I didn't trust myself not to yell at her on the way home, so I made her catch a ride with Dad and left.

Now it's time for some ice...and some pills.



I need to watch Battlestar Galactica soon guys--anyone interested?

Raise your hand if you've ever smelled a smoker who's tried to cover ithe smoke smell up with perfume, cologne, etc. Doesn't work does it? The smells just get meshed together into something even more horrible.

Now for the funny part: this guy, along with wearing excessive amounts of cologne and still smelling like smoke, actually had a car freshener tied to his belt loop. The blue kind (whatever scent that is). Along with being quite fashionable, I bet he thought this was going to help.

Whoo.

I laugh... now that I can breath.

On a different note; I feel like my throat is closing up. Every time I swallow the very back of my throat hurts, and I get this weird pressure in my temples. Well, maybe that part is just a headache, but I don't really ever get those, so I can't tell. Mum says it's just stress, but...oddly, I'm not stressed even though it's finals week...in fact, I feel very happy

Anyways, the swallowing is a bit problematic because I've recently become addicted to tea.
It seemed like the best solution to my coffee addiction...like how tic-tacs replaced cough drops...
I sense a pattern.
