Oh, look, it has been about nine months since I updated this thing... *sighs* Sorry, I haven't been feeling well, and haven't been getting much done. I am still alive though.

Mother had major surgery, and is still recovering, which took up all of my limited spare time for quite a while there.

It is disgustingly hot here. Heat of this kind just seems to suck the life out of me.

I have been playing with interference patterns, making mandalas and such. I might post some of those soon... I hope.

Hmmm… We bought waaaaay too much candy. The problem is, we can never tell how many kids will show up. One year will be really busy, and we will run out, and the next will be dead, with only a couple of groups. Now we have much more left then we should eat in a year. And most of it is stuff that we don’t like too much ourselves (to prevent our eating it all!) *sets out a large bowel of candy to share with anyone that stops by to read this*

On a less mundane subject… Tonight is the time that the veil between the worlds is the thinnest, and our departed friends and relatives may come back to visit us. This is not something to fear, but a time of celebration, when offerings are set out to feed the visiting dead. *offers the departed as much candy as they want and/or can take away, since most of her pumpkins this year are plastic* I believe that dried beans are traditional, or more recently, cakes and wine, but believe me, anyone of my relatives that wanted to visit would prefer the candy. By some traditions, this is also the end of the wheal of the year, and so is celebrated as the Witches’ New Year.

So Happy Samhain to all, and to all a good night.

Weird… The full moon is as orange as a pumpkin tonight. The wind has changed, and the smoke from the big fires is plowing right over the mountain now. I have a headache, my eyes are burning, and my throat is scratchy and sore. As if I didn’t have enough medical problems. I am not looking forward to tomorrow, when the smoke is supposed to be much worse still.

And so nearly 8 months have passed again, since my last journal… I suppose I had better update this.

This is (more or less) the end of the current butterflies series. Sure, there are a few more that I could post, but I have all the ones that I really like up, and my fingers hurt too much to continue right now. I hope to get a calendar of butterflies put together soonish, but I don’t know exactly when.

As for the rest of life, the statement from my previous journal is still in effect, and so I repeat it here:

I have been sick for nearly a year and a half now. Yes, the whole time. It took them a while to figure out what I have, but the final agreement was Fibromyalgia, before my health insurance ran out. For those of you that don’t know what that is, and/or don’t want to bother to look it up, that means that I have a chronic condition involving pain, exhaustion, more pain, weakness, more pain, mental fog, etc. It is not fatal, but it is rather disabling. Some days are worse then others. The few good days I have usually have to be spent trying to get basic things like cleaning, and grocery shopping done, so I have not been having a lot of time/energy for editing and posting photographs, or other art. I have not been completely idle, mind you, but my rate of art production has been greatly slowed.

Fibromyalgia doesn’t have a cure yet, so the doctors just try to treat the symptoms. The problem being that I can’t afford my prescriptions as it is right now, since my insurance ran out. So that is more or less where things stand at the moment.

Urk, I had better update this thing, hadn’t I? It has been almost two months.

Lets see… Was sick, finally got better, then got sick again, darn it. I have had an earache following a really bad flue for over three weeks now. That is one of the reasons I haven’t been updating much.

On the artistic front, the series of hummingbird pictures was obviously followed by a series of desert oasis and native plant photos, with a few roses interspersed here and there. I still have more of the oasis pictures to post, but it is taking me forever to get anything done, so I am not quite sure when I will post them. I tend to do things in fits and starts, and get distracted, then return to something much later. It makes for a rather haphazard gallery, but that is just the order I do things in. *shrugs* I also have literally hundreds of roses that are worthy of posting, and I will likely peck away at them, a few at a time, as I have been doing, between other projects.

Next on the horizon are a series of butterfly pictures, and my first results from playing around with Apophysis, not necessarily in that order.

Recently, I finally gave in to the temptation, and downloaded Apophysis. After a bit of a struggle, I got it running (much thanks to ~utak3r ), and then it promptly ate my brain. There is a sort of Zen state that I get into when I play with color and permutations (as seen in some of my manipulations series), particularly when I am sick, and trying to forget how nasty I feel. I end up creating literally hundreds of images (in Apophysis, I can just save the presets to an image, without rendering it other then at draft resolution). The problem is, it takes a long time to render something at a decent resolution and quality, so the actual finished images are only emerging slowly, as I get them rendered. Sure, I suppose I could render low resolution ones just for DA, but that just seems wrong to me. *L* When I do something, I like to try to do it right in the first place. :)

There are, believe it or not, a lot more of that series of fire manipulations I have been posting, but I am not getting much reaction to them, so I am breaking off that run for now, and posting other stuff. I have been practicing a bit of backyard ornithology, nothing too exciting, mostly hummingbirds, but I liked the results, so that is what you will get, for now, with a few other odds and ends. I will likely return to the fire photos and fire manips at a later date.

It finally rained here (about time!), if only for one day… So now everything I am allergic to is blooming. Be careful what you wish for…

My energy has been at a low ebb of late, which is likely why I have been averaging about one journal entry a month.

I am still taking pictures, of course, but it seems to be taking me forever to get them posted. *shrugs* Likely having to do with that lack of energy and being sick for so long. I haven’t quite given up on getting caught up on my messages here… eventually. *L*

Sorry I haven't posted much in a while. I am still around, just low on energy, and having many other things to do at the moment.

The roof repairs are finished, but there is still a great deal of cleaning and sorting of things to do.

It hasn't rained here (or even drizzled) in months. That was a good thing while they were replacing the roof, but is not a good thing any longer. It just shouldn't be in the 80's, stone dry, and blazingly sunny in February (well, not in this hemisphere, at any rate), at least not in my opinion.

I am still taking pictures, of course, but it seems to be taking me forever to get them posted. *shrugs* Likely having to do with that lack of energy and being sick for so long. I haven’t quite given up on getting caught up on my messages here… eventually. *L*

You know, some days, I really wonder about the laws of probability… I have bronchitis and am on an antibiotic, and it is not even two hours into my birthday, when I discover that the dishwasher has died (while completely full of course, they never die empty). I am still unemployed, and completely out of savings, of course, and we just took out a 2nd mortgage to pay for the repairs to our leaking roof (they come to start ripping it off Monday), and only a couple of weeks ago, we had to replace the gas stove, which also died. Sometimes, it is just one damn thing after another…

On the artistic front: Yeah, I know, I got distracted from the fire images by seasonal projects and being sick. I will still get some of them up, it will just take a while. I have been quite sick for a while now, it gets better and worse, and is worse right now. Some nasty flu bug, or something that we (my family and I) just keep getting re-infected with, according to the doctor. *sighs* On a course of antibiotics now.

The fire, at least, is a good thing. Between the chills, and cooler weather, we finally got to use the fireplace, and I got a lot of photos of fire. Not sure what to do with them yet (over 411, just so far, and likely more to come), but there is some fun potential there. Fire makes the most lovely graceful curves. :)

Hmm, the coming of the holidays would be more fun if I wasn’t so exhausted and sick.

I thought I would just wish a Joyous Samhain to all of you. At this, the ending of one years cycle and the beginning of another, when the veil is thin between the worlds, we remember all those that have gone on before us. We say farewell particularly to those that have departed in the last year, with the assurance that we will see them again as the wheel turns and in the fullness of time. The world prepares for the coming sleep of Winter, and the leaves fall from the trees (well, in some climates, anyway…). It is not a time of fear, but a time of rejoicing. The celebration of ends and beginnings. And chocolate…

On a less philosophical note, our black cat hates being kept inside, and endeavors to make that clear to all and sundry. Still, safer for her, all things and senseless cruelty considered. *sighs*

Mood: Mad Highly Frustrated

Well, I am back, at least for the moment. *eyes DA warily in case Level 3/Cogent pull the rug out from under her again* As some of you know, or perhaps you don’t, two internet backbones got into a pissing contest with each other, and the result was users served by one or the other of them not being able to access sites on the other. [link]

In other words, most RoadRunner customers, among others, were not able to access DA, or several other sites for nearly the last two days. Deep frustration.

And just when I had spent hours figuring out exactly what had happened and bitching to everyone I could reach at the companies involved about it, they seemed to sort it out again, all at once. *snorts* All that angst wasted. At least this one wasn’t DA’s fault!

Anyway, now that my education regarding the financial and corporate structure of the internet can be set aside for the moment, back to important things, like working on art, and getting those print files resized and such, that the Print Update mentioned.

Edit: *sighs* Delays, delays... They finally came out with templates for prints, which is all good, except that on inspection, my boarders aren't big enough for some print sizes. So before posting anything new, I have to tweak the boarders. What will really be a pain though, is that they changed the aspect ratio of mouse pads (was 1.33:1, will now be 1.19:1, quite a change), meaning that for every single print that I have available as a mouse pad, I have to edit the source file to a new aspect ratio, and upload the new file. I don't know that I am up to that... Maybe I will just quit offering mouse pads for anything but new stuff. It isn't like anyone is buying my prints anyway, much less the mouse pads. *dry laugh*

Well, being back hasn't meant that I had as much time for the computer as I had expected to have, but I have been slowly trying to weed through all the messages and images that piled up. If I haven't gotten to yours, I will eventually. *L*

I must admit, the situation with the administration here rather discouraged me from participating since I returned. I don't see that things have improved at all. Indeed, this new deal with BandMerch in the Community Marketplace, while seeming like a good idea superficially, is set up in a way that, as far as I can see, is a complete rip off to the artists that choose to participate. It really is an individual's choice, if they want to get involved with this, but I hope they read the agreement very carefully before signing away all rights to their work (including the copyright) for a very minimal fee. Read the agreement if you doubt me, pay special attention to the first section: [link]

I hope you can read PDFs, as they didn't post it in plain text or HTML. If you need it in pain text, tell me, and I will cut and paste. Also, if you look at the third section, they don't have to give you any credit for the art, if they don't want to, so saying that this is good 'exposure' and that that makes up for the poor pay is not really valid. My mother, who has both worked in the design industry for years, then taught art for many more years, said that she would not recommend a contract like that even for junior high students. She said you should _never_ sign away all your rights like that, even if you have never sold anything before.

Also, note that this price structure substantially under sells the graphic designers that make their living in the industry, and if other companies start doing this, there could be substantial impact to these people's livings. A good T-shirt or CD design standardly sells for about $2,000. If the artist is well known, likely more, if the artist is new, or the design is quite simple, it can be less, but $500 would be the absolute bare minimum, even for a very simple design. And with that, the artist should still keep the copyright on the art, just license it to the company, and the artist should be given credit, even if it is just a very small signature or liner note.

Now, I realize this doesn't always happen, people settle for less then they deserve all the time. But the young artists that BandMerch is trying to take advantage of here should at least be warned. I am sure that BandMerch will not be picking any substandard art to use, so if they choose someone's art, then you can be sure that it is professional quality, and the artist, amateur, or experienced, deserves the same treatment that a relatively unknown professional would receive.

All that being said, since DA has set up this deal (they don't receive anything other then publicity for it, according to lolly), one would think that they would try to protect the interests of young or inexperienced artist who might not know that this deal has some serious drawbacks. Now, I believe that this was started with the best of intentions, and that those setting it up really just wanted to give young artist an opportunity to break into the graphic arts part of the music industry. And the idea itself is quite good, if set up correctly. As far as I can tell though, they let BandMerch dictate all the terms of the deal, and that deal puts the artist at a serious disadvantage. I am not blaming anyone in particular, or trying to insult anyone, I just think that the powers that be should have looked a lot more closely at this deal, before recommending it to the young artists that DA in some ways represents. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… No, wait, that was another story.

Yes, I am finally back from the great abyss of no internet connection. It took a lot longer then I expected to get things set up at this end of things, and the punishing heat here took more of a toll on me then I expected, and I had expected that it would be bad. It will take me a while to get to all my built up messages and to view all the deviations that will have accrued in my absence, much less to post anything new, so please be patient. I just finally got net access on my own computer today, and there are still a few things I need to install and get set up.

Just to make the complaint official, 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade (as the high) for days running, with very high humidity, is a BAD thing. It isn’t quite that hot the last few days, but still hot enough. I can’t even step outside without feeling sick.

The few mornings I tried to go out in the early morning to take pictures of the mountains before it got too hot to breath outside, it was either too hazy to see them, or I got eaten alive by mosquitoes. I think I need to invest in some DEET…. So relatively few new pictures since I got down here, other then some of my mother’s dachshunds.

Sorry to have been away so long, but I am back now, though it might take me a while to get back up to speed here. I hope everything has gone ok for the rest of you in my absence.

Well, I don't want to move, but I haven't been able to find work here, and I lose my apartment at the end of the month, as I can't afford rent any longer. So it looks like I will be selling my car and moving back down to the desert. Now, don't get me wrong, I get along great with my mother and brother, and wouldn't mind living with them in the least, except that they live in one of the bloody hottest, sunniest, (and most uptight) places on the West Coast. *sighs* And I really liked having a place of my own.

No help for it though, I must leave the land of forests, and roses, and cool rains, for the land of blazing sun, scorching heat, sand, golf courses, and imported tropical plants that I am allergic to. There was a reason I left in the first place. *sighs*

So, I will be trying to pack up everything I own in the next week or two. Then I will be trying to squeeze it all into a space much smaller then the space it came out of. Oh, joy. I will try to check in a time or two, before I have to go off line and pack up the computer, but I likely won't be posting much, and please don't be surprised if I don't respond to anything for a while. I am not being rude, just away. I will eventually get set up again down in the desert and will try to sort through whatever has accumulated while I was gone.

I do intend to make a last visit or two to the Rose Gardens, before I have to leave, but I won't have the time to post the photos I take for a good while. Still, I hope to get more roses collected then I can conveniently process and post, even in a year or two. So there will still be many more roses from me.

I also have more of the series of other and odd flowers to be posted, but I have run out of time to work on and post those, other then perhaps a few that I have ready to go. The rest will just have to wait for later.

Well, the reason that I haven’t posted much for a while, and haven’t been responding to things is that I was first very harried at work, then quite sick. Sick enough to not even want to turn on the computer or get out of bed. I dragged myself back to work this morning, despite still feeling rather bad, only to be laid off immediately for ‘attendance issues’, in other words, for being sick. Well, I bought one of my own calendars, both to see what the quality was like, and because someone wanted to buy one. What follows is my critique of the results, if that will bore you, skip the next paragraph. *L*

I was a bit disappointed with the print quality, as the pattern in the printing (little circles and such) is clearly visible with the naked eye from about six inches away, as it would be with color printing in my local news paper. I know the issue is not with my submitted images, as one of the ones I used was at a far higher resolution then the others, and it still printed with the same visible pattern on it. It isn’t really discernable from more then six inches away, so it is still adequate for a calendar, just disappointing given DA’s reputations for prints. The material it is printed on is nice good quality light card stock, though it could be a bit heavier. I compared it to a 3x5 index card and I think it was slightly lighter then that, though close. It has a luster to it, neither too glossy, nor too mat, just about right. I did discover that when they tell you the size to use, they mean that will be the entire page, so I have resubmitted the calendar pages with a larger boarder on them, as the spiral binding and hole were cutting into the image and/or the title on the bottom, which was unattractive. It should be available again in a day or so, I would imagine. The calendar pages them selves (the month parts, not the image parts) were all right, though I think it would be better with less of a boarder, and more space on each day. That is just personal preference though. The font is nice, neutral, and clearly legible, which is appropriate as it has to go with a wide range of things. Over all, once I have fixed the problem with the spiral binding biting into the titles (which wasn’t exactly their fault, though they could have mentioned that in the directions), it will be a decent calendar. The profit ratio on the calendars is fairly low though, given what their base price is.

I have some new images (yes, I do take pictures of things other then roses!) and will hopefully get around to posting a few of them some time soon. I have been playing with long exposure times. :)

The longest night, dawning to the shortest day, and the return of light, as the days get longer from here on out. :) I hope you all have a wonderful holiday, whichever one you celebrate. May you all have the important things, and be able to see through the commercialization to what this season is really supposed to stand for.

For me, photography is a kind of magic that allows me to capture transitory beauty, or a feeling, and share it with others. People often don’t stop to look closely at things, or to notice the world around them. It is a way to let someone look through your eyes, and for you to look through the eyes of another. You may not always like what you see, but you will usually learn something from it.

And on the subject of commercialization... I finished the rose calendar, Macro-Roses 2005, and have that up. I am slowly adding the individual roses from it, as I get around to them. I must have enough unprocessed roses for 5 calendars still. *L* Not to mention all the other images from the last three months that I haven’t gotten up.

I was sorting out and framing old rose images I have never put up with the intent of making a calendar, and I got distracted... So one of the roses became a whole bunch of psychedelic mandalas. :) I hope you like them. I will still be getting to that calendar soon here. Well, I have been putting up things from the Rose Gardens back in October that I never got posted. I suppose you could call it the Rose Gardens III set, and the only ones of the Rose Gardens taken with my new camera, though the roses were beginning to get more sparse by then. I am horribly behind. *L* I have also added prints of most of my snowflakes. I think they would make excellent holiday coasters, particularly as the patterns don't have a right way up. I entered two of them in the Holiday Hullabaloo contest.




I will likely be trying to add more of my older stuff for a while. It would be nice to get the Fall leaf images up before Winter is over!

Finally finished that Death and Webs series... I think. Lots of other webs still to go, but not as disturbing. I am behind by a huge number of pictures now, in posting, and may never catch up, as I keep taking new pictures as well. *dry laugh* I am attempting to post things in some semblance of order, but I may eventually give up and just post things as I get them sorted out and edited, or as I feel like it.

Anyway, still depressed and stressed, but trying not to think about it.

Well, it seems to be over. *sighs* The presidential fiasco aside, I find it horribly depressing that we can't even agree, in this country, to respect the rights of minorities, and give them equal protection under the law. I really couldn’t care less whether a union between two adults is called a 'marriage', or something else, but from a purely civil law perspective, same sex couples should be entitled to the same legal and civil benefits and responsibilities of such a union as opposite sex couples. Religion shouldn't come into the equation. If a given religious sect wants to dictate who can and can not be married in the eyes of their church, well, that is their problem and their prerogative. A religion, whether the members make up the majority or not, should not be allowed to curtail the civil and legal rights of a minority. That is why the separation of church and state was built into this country.

I have no doubt that eventually, marriage (whether given that name or not) of same sex couples will be legal and protected. It just looks like it is going to take a good bit longer, like the civil rights movement, and a lot of bigoted laws will have to be repealed once people finally come to their senses.

As for the presidential election... If I said everything I feel about that, it would only upset people and start a flame war. Really no point in that. Nothing I say at this point is going to convince anyone with opposing views, and with those who have similar views to mine, I would just be preaching to the quire, to use a religious metaphor. Lets just say, at this point, if I was offered a job in a civilized English speaking country, like Canada, or Britain, or New Zealand, I would probably jump at it. The 'civil' part seems to have been removed from 'civilized' in this country of late.

But the likelihood of that happening in the next three weeks, before my unemployment benefits run out and I can't pay the rent is not that high. Even if Kerry had won, by some minor miracle, change wouldn't have happened fast enough to help me at this point, I have no illusions about that.

And now Bush gets to appoint 4 supreme court justices, most likely. So much for reproductive rights, or civil liberties for at least a few decades...

So, yes, I am depressed, and for once gave in to the temptation to rant about it, which I usually resist. Rant is now over, move along, nothing more to be seen here... *sighs and wanders off, feeling nauseous*

And here is hoping the politicians don't really scare us come November 2nd. Though it might be too late for that wish...

Oh, and if there is any image that anyone wants a print of that I don't have that available for yet, just tell me, and I will move that one to the top of my list. Some of the older images can't be printed very large, because of the size my previous camera created, but most of them can print ok at page size, or so. Also, if you are requesting something be made available for print, just tell me if you want it without a boarder (or with no more then a minimal bleed boarder).

I am probably being optimistic, that anyone will ask, but hey, you never know...
