So it's never been a secret that I fail to keep up with updating things like this deviantart page on a regular basis. But, I mean, if I did update regularly, it wouldn't be as special and surprising as these once every few months or so updates, would it?

New things: I have my own website now. You can visit it here at EricJustinWhite.com. Chances are I'll be updating that on a much more constant basis, seeing as how I'm actually paying for my own domain name and hosting and all that jazz. I'll try to remember to update Deviantart while I'm at it, but hours seem to turn into minutes these days.

Also: I'm currently accepting commissions for both sculptural work and custom wood furniture. I've sold a few pieces recently and am very interested in getting to work on something new. If you are interested, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me at Eric@EricJustinWhite.com.

So I realize it's been quite a long time since I've updated my journal or put up any new work or anything of that nature. It's been one heck of a semester, and now that it's finally over I'm taking the time to take a breath of fresh air. Of course, my body knew not to let me get sick during the insanity of final exams, so I came down with a case of strep throat a few days after my last exam, and am just now recovering from that. I've got a lot of new work, some of it I'm extremely proud of, some of it not so much, but I can promise at least 5 or 6 new works that I'm very fond of will be up here shortly. Also, I'm working on a new website which I will post the link to shortly when I get it all finished like I want it.

In the meantime, go look at hannajubran.com. He's one of my sculpture professors here at ECU, and a very talented artist.

More soon.

So it took scholarship applications being due this past monday for me to really get on photographing all my new work, and now I officially have all of my finished work up here. Okay, that's a lie, there are a few exceptions to that regarding work I don't currently have access to, but really, It's close enough.

I was actually quite surprised and very pleased by the response I got to the work I just posted. Lots of comments and faves, much more than I'm used to, and I really appreciate everyone who took the time to look at my stuff and leave a few kind words or a short critique. Thank you all so much.

As far as life and such goes right now, I'm kind of smack dab in the middle of the week of death. Besides having a ridiculously horrible cold, I think just about everything in the world had to happen or be due this week. Lots of volunteer work for Art Ed (around 10 hours total), scholarship submissions due, Undergrad Exhibition work and forms due, a test in geography, a wax figurative sculpture due (which I completed earlier today, and will be cast on thursday) and a print due (which I miraculously got an extension on without even asking for it because I'm sick). Needless to say, I've gotten very little sleep, (if me posting this journal at 5:45 AM didn't already give that away) which hasn't helped out my cold at all. A side effect of that is that I'm taking pseudoephedrine for my cold, which kind of has the effect of taking speed or having an IV drip of caffeine for me. This all comes at the price of possibly seeing things, being really loopy and feeling like my hair is standing on end or my head is floating a few feet above my body, but really, being able to breathe is worth it.

Anyway, enough procrastination. Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to look at my work, and super thanks to those actually dedicated enough to read my rambling journals and get far enough to see this.

So it's been well over a month since my last journal and I figured an update would be nice.

Printmaking = the bane of my existence, in the sense that it takes up a ridiculous amount of time out of my life in comparison to other things, and that it's not something that interests me too terribly much, but a required course. On a better note, I'm feeling much better about it now than I was a week ago, so that's good. Unfortunately, I'll be spending the rest of the night carving linoleum and will probably change my mind about it around 5 AM when I'm halfway done.

Sculpture = Scary as crap, but one of the best classes I've ever taken. My class is a combined section for Studio I and Studio IV, meaning half the people in my class are much more advanced than I am, but we're all doing the same exact projects, and critiquing at the same exact time. That pretty much means that I have to work my butt off to try and be able to compare with kids who have already taken multiple sculpture classes before this one and have already submitted been admitted into the sculpture program. Scary stuff, but it pushes me to do well, which is nice. We've already completed our first casting, an aluminum vapo casting in loose sand, something completely new to me. My casting kind of failed, really, but learning the process was quite amazing, and us Studio I kids actually got to take care of all of the skimming and pouring and whatnot, and it was my job to be at the pouring end and take care of that, which was amazing.

Wood Design = something that might actually make me change my mind about concentrating in sculpture, which is saying something. I pretty much love everything about wood, so it's not too hard for me to see myself concentrating in it. We're only going to have 3 projects throughout the semester, which is nice because that leaves me a lot of room to be more ambitious and take my time with my work in there. The first project is a "box" which really doesn't mean all that much except it has to be a container of some sort. I'm planning on doing mine with some complex diagonal lines and compound miter joints. Exciting stuff.

So, as far as getting new work up here, I realize I'm quite behind. My sister is still planning on photographing all my work, but she's been crazy busy lately so I'm not sure when that will happen. I've got quite a few pieces from my sculpture class last semester as well as a couple of paintings that I will try and snap some pics of to throw up here until that happens, and will also try and get up some pictures of my work as it's completed this semester, rather than waiting around to do it all at once. Can't make any promises, but I'll try.

So I'm finally done with everything for the semester and I'm super excited and relieved. Back home for Christmas break and loving it, but I seriously can't wait to get back and start creating more art. All I have with me here is a tiny sketchbook, because I knew if I actually brought my supplies home I wouldn't touch them, but if I didn't I'd be dying to do something. Hopefully this way I'll return to Greenville with a million new ideas sketched out and I'll have plenty to do there.

My sister, an excellent photographer, has agreed to professionally photograph all of my work for me in return for a painting, so hopefully that means I'll have some high-quality photographs of my new work up here sometime soon, as well as some better shots of the older stuff. Exciting!

Life pretty much rocks. That's also a plus.

So, final exams are just around the corner and the pressure's building up pretty fast. My last day of class is next wednesday, the 5th, and just 2 days after that on Friday is the final exam in my painting class. I've got 2 paintings due next week, one on Monday and one Friday, as well as any resubmissions of the other paintings we've done this semester. I'm about half complete with one of them, but the other hasn't even been started yet. Not to mention that I have a 6 page paper due in Psych on tuesday, a sculpture to do that I've barely started on, and of course, the final exams for my psych, geology and art history classes the next week. Oh yeah, and the written and skills tests in my rock climbing class.

Needless to say, things are getting a little stressed over here. My roomy is practically going insane, what with this being her first experience with finals AND having a voice audition and music theory exam to get into the music department that kind of decides whether she can do what she wants to with her life. Lots of tension in the air. Fun times.

On a better note, I'm super-excited about next semester. I've pretty much got all art classes, except for one geography class (stupid social sciences requirements). I'm taking a printmaking survey, which should be interesting, a wood design survey which I'm sure I'm going to love, and my first sculpture studio which kind of scares the crap out of me, but I'm looking forward to. I've also got a Community Arts Management course, which will be focused on planning the Youth Arts Festival here at ECU, and a Computers in Art Education course which I'm pretty sure just involves learning basic photoshop and such.

So, as far as new work getting up here, I've got quite a few things finished that just need to be photographed, but I can't say when I'll be getting around to that with everything else going on. I'll probably wait until I finish out all my work this semester, that way I can photograph and upload it all in one shot.

So, it's halloween, or rather, it was halloween a couple hours ago, and part of me feels lame for not partaking of the festivities, but I just didn't have it in me tonight. I stayed up really late studying for a geology exam and got up early for my art history class, so I've had very little sleep. I intended to stay in and get some rest, but for some reason I find myself unable to sleep. Thus, this journal entry is born.

I posted a couple new pieces today, one of which is a self portrait from my painting survey class, the other an abstract plaster carving from my sculpture survey. I've gotten a few comments about the self portrait painting looking older than myself or not really looking like me, and while I can't claim photographic accuracy, I definitely feel like I captured some sort of resemblance to myself, especially considering the source photograph of myself that I worked from. I'm tempted to post the source photograph for comparison, maybe to my scraps or something, but I haven't really made up my mind. I'll sleep on it and give it some thought later.

In any case, critiques are greatly welcome on any of my work, so please, feel free to give me some constructive criticism. Now, if I could only get some sleep...

So, fall break has been a nice short retreat from the hectic college life, and other than the chance to lie around and generally be lazy, it also gave me some time to drop by the high school and pick up a lot of my old work from my wonderful art teacher Mr. Phillips. We rounded up as much as we could find, but he's still holding on to a couple of pieces that he's going to hang around the school. I was able to get home and photograph a lot of this work, as well as a couple pieces from Design II last semester that I had here at the house, and I've uploaded 12 pieces for your viewing pleasure. I tried to upload them in somewhat of a chronological order, with my newer pieces from Design II coming last. Keep in mind that the work from high school is rather old, some of it from three or more years ago, so it's not going to be all the greatest work in the world, but I think it's important to kind of see how I started out and be able to see the progress from then to now and on into the future when I post new work.

I still may be posting some older work in the future (some of my work is in the possession of family and friends, so I'll post it when and if I can get it back or get photographs), but for now I think I'm going to focus on getting new work done and up here. I've got 2 sculpture pieces being graded now, 2 welded steel projects coming up, a painting completed, one in the works that will be complete in a week or two, and 3 more oil paintings coming up this semester. All of this adds up to me getting absolutely no sleep when I get back from fall break, but everyone else getting to see new work. In the meantime, enjoy my older work, and let me know what you think.

So my roommate is currently writing an expository essay for her english class on the topic of procrastination, something I totally inspired her to do by my sheer lack of doing what I need to in a timely fashion. I'm currently studying for an art history exam I've got tomorrow, one that counts about 15% of my final grade, and I'm on slide 5 of about 40. Normally I wouldn't be too worried, but since it's entirely impossible to actually follow my professor during class, I'd say I'm missing about half the information I need to know. At least I go to class and actually have the book, something that can't be said for my friend Karen who dropped by today to copy my sparse notes and use my book for a couple hours. She hasn't been to class in about 3 weeks. Anyway, I should have completley studied this beforehand, but the problem is I've got other stuff going on that I am seriously inspired to do, such as this huge mixed media collage/painting self portrait I just got assigned to do for my painting class. Most people are working on a smaller scale on canvas for this one, anywhere from the 16x20 range to 20x24, but I got super inspired and decided to build myself a 24x36 painting surface out of some plywood and braced it with 2x2s to give it support. I'm hoping this will let me work looser and get some broader brushwork going on when I get to that point. I probably spent a good 3 hours today putting gesso on the board, ripping up an old pair of shorts, a phone book, and some preliminary composition drawings on newsprint to use for collage material, and covered about half the board. I know most of this time should have been spent studying, but I couldn't help myself. Not to mention I've got a plaster carving due Tuesday...

Anyway, I'm going to stop using deviantArt to help me procrastinate and actually get to some studying. Be prepared for new work coming soon, and maybe even some old work within the next few weeks if I can get by the high school over fall break.

So, the Tri-State Sculpture Conference was held this weekend here at ECU, and I had a great opportunity to meet Bruce Beasley and listen to his keynote speech for the event. His work and story was so completely inspiring, and he has quickly become one of my favorite sculptors. His inovation, ambition and confidence in his work is incredible, and this is especially evident in his cast acrylic work. When he started out working in acrylic, the most anyone could cast was up to 4 inches in depth, and this was by the most experienced scientists and chemists in the field. Bruce Beasley was soon casting at these thicknesses and wanted to find a process to cast even thicker.

He went on to win a competition from the state of California with an acrylic model, and was commisioned to create a monumental sculpture that was four feet deep and thirteen feet wide. He went to DuPont for help, and they said that since he had already pushed the process to its limits, there was nothing they could do to help, and he was on his own. He proceeded to perfect the process and cast the worlds thickest acrylic sculpture ever, with no cracks or bubbles. Because of this work, and because he was the only one who could do it, he was commisioned by a group of oceanographers to create the first fully transparent bathysphere for exploring the deep sea. His bathyspheres have been used in discovering hundreds of new species of sea life, and when the space shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986, the submersibles with his bathyspheres were used to search the miles of seabed and locate the wreckage. Every bit of his work is equally as inspiring, and anyone interested in sculpture should look him up.

During the conference, I also had a mold from my sculpture survey class chosen for a demo on paper casting, and I was really excited about that. It was an amazing honor to have all of the succesful artists there seeing my work, and learning the new process was equally as awesome. The first of the paper casts was made by the people in the printmaking department, but after the demo they let me go through the process and make one myself, complete with making the paper for it. I should be able to pull it out of the mold on monday, and I'll post a picture when I can get around to taking it. Until then, I'm going to go admire Bruce Beasley some more and work on a painting that's due on Monday. Expect to see that soon, as well, if it turns out okay.

I got a new DeviantArt. After spending some time trying to decide whether to revive the old one or start from scratch, I decided to go with the latter. My old one was something I started years ago in my early high school years, only had a handful of deviations, and was something I had severely neglected since. Being in my second year of college now and having put those years and the work I was doing behind me, I felt it would make more sense to start out fresh.

That being said, I also strongly believe that one's roots are very important and always influence how we grow and develop, both in life and in our art, and it's important to embrace rather than deny that. I'm struggling to decide whether or not I should post some of my earlier works from high school, because I feel that many of them are strong in their own rights, and if nothing else, show where I came from and how my work is developing. I really don't have pictures of much of this work, and most of it isn't even in my possession at the moment, but I could round it up and photograph it to submit to my gallery if I decide it's the right thing to do. I'd greatly appreciate any opinions on this matter.

Now, on to my current work. As I said before, This is my second year in college, and I'm planning on double majoring in art education and studio arts with a concentration in sculpture. Right now, with the exception of the Five Leaves painting, which is my most current work, I'm really focusing on submitting my best work from my classes last year, which included Drawing I, Figure Drawing, and Design I and II. Some of this work I've still got to get back from professors, so I'll upload it when I get it. When I'm done with this, I'm going to try my best to keep my gallery up to date with the work I'm doing now. I'm currently in a painting survey and a sculpture survey class, so expect to see work from these two classes soon.

So, to sum it all up, hopefully I'll be here to stay this time. I greatly appreciate anyone who stops by to look at my gallery, and anyone who bothers to read this. Please feel free to comment on any of my work and provide constructive criticism, especially if I upload any works in progress. Helpful opinions are always welcome.
