Dani's birthday party was meant to be a blast: there were people in charge of anything imaginable, from inviting guests, and electing caterers, to mowing the lawn prior to the party, and hiring a band. Anthony was in charge of setting up Dani's blind date.

It was an odd idea, setting up a date on a woman's birthday without her knowledge or approval. Yet it was drawn from a hat, along with a plethora of other activities and events. Oddly enough, so was the candidate for the blind date. Several pages from the phone book were shredded and placed in a hat, and one name was chosen.

Anthony led Dani across the veranda and sat her in a chair.

"Can I take this off now? I'm very excited," Dani said as she peeked under her blindfold. "Um, Anthony. Who's this?"

"Allow me to introduce you to Mr. Salem Gambit, private investigator," replied Anthony, nervously. It just dawned on him that this blind date was probably a bad idea.

"Hi. I'm your date," Salem whispered, also realizing what a bad idea this was.

"Salem, this is Dani. She's an editor for a private ... I'll let her tell you all about that. Dani, I'll be in the kitchen if you need anything." Anthony quickly turned his back and shuffled away.

"ANTHONY! I need something!" she screamed. Anthony turned around; his face was pale like the moonlit clouds.

If looks could kill, her emotionally-berserked stare would have held his head down in a tank of weak coffee. But looks don't kill; they condemn. And hers was condemning with the ferocity and subtlety of an enigmatic hitman.

"Yes?" he asked. Dani stood up, threw her blindfold in his face, and stormed off into the crowd.

"I should have seen that coming..." Anthony muttered. "Oh; Salem, don't be offended. I think that's how they're supposed to react."

My species is at the brink of extinction; I'm the last of my people. And I'm dying. I'm not too concerned with my own death (I learned early on that it's necessary), but rather with the second death of everyone before me. My ancestors will die again.

I know you hated us, not because of anything we did, but because of your foolish ignorance and prejudice. It's okay; I forgive you. By being the last one, I represent my species, so I guess that means we all forgive you.

I'm only asking one favor: Don't forget us; for if you do, our existence is meaningless. To me, that's worse than any hell I'll ever face; an entire race, all for nothing.
