Went to the MSVU Community Show opening today. Been trying to go to more of those things, and I'm glad I went. I did submit something to it ("Catching Stars"), but there was lots of great art there to see, including performances

. Also saw a lot of people I don't see on a regular basis.

Now I'm home. I'll be heading out for dance class in a few hours. It's a drear day, though unseasonably warm. This maybe hasn't been the most exciting update ever, but I figured it was about time. Later world!

What now? I'm back from vacation in PEI, as close to tanned as I could ever hope to be, working and taking a 6-day jazz dance workshop. 90 minutes every evening, with a teacher from LA named Jill Straus. She's great - so much positive energy! In the meantime I'll be playing catch-up with other art-related tasks, while eyeing a post-undergrad future.

This was part of a commission for

, who is a Final Fantasy fan (and more importantly, 8-Bit Theater)

. It took way longer than I thought it would, but was worth it in the end.

The robe is broadclothe with polyester lining. The mask was made form an old, stretchy (possibly lycra) shirt I had lying around, with eyes made from the same plastic mesh I used to make the hat.

I think the Fan Art category could use a costume/textiles division. The closest I could get was "traditional", which would have been fine except I could only choose drawing or painting after that. Will have to see if I can suggest it....

It looks sunny out there right now. I hope it stays that way so I can bike to work and back. June is going by fast and furious. Gotta be careful not to take it for granted, even though what I'm really looking forward to is August and my vacation. At the moment my schedule is pretty clear, leaving lots of room for work and earning money. Of course, that doesn't have to be strictly a summer thing anymore. I'm very interested to see how I feel in September, when I don't have to cut my work hours for classes, buy school supplies, pay for tuition, or anything like that. In other news, I'm down to one job again. Gave my notice at Fabricville. I was there for about 3 & 1/2 months - gave it a good try, and thought about it for a long time. Now I know that I want to do this. Claytime is great, and I'll have the time to concentrate on artmaking. Besides which, May is going to be busy! I've got convocation on the 15th, and an end-of-term jazz dance show on the 30th. Also, I've got work up in the graduate exhibition right now

. Went to the opening yesterday, ate snack food, got to see a whole bunch of my old classmates and other people I knew.....It was good. I submitted "Baby Puppet".

. It's a new rule, so we're still getting used to it. Anyway, it's nice to be all showered & have some time.

I finished the baby afghan, for which I am happy. Right now I have in front of me a neon yellow scarf I'm making. It's chunky weight wool, and other than that I know very little about it. It came in one of those Value Village grab bags of yarn, just like the only other ball of neon yarn that's ever come into my possession. So now of course, I'm determined to find more of it. We'll see how that goes....

I seem to be on a colour kick

. Maybe it's because I spent all that time staring at the brightly coloured squares I used in that afghan, but now I want to do more textile work full of bright, saturated colour. It makes me happy just looking at it. This could be a great way to beat the winter blues, when next it hits. I seem to be on a knitting jag too. It's relaxing, portable, and I'm being productive. I've become a knitting nerd

The first part of the year, January through April, always seems to be about getting through the months. Maybe it's cause my birthday's in may (I shall be 25 years old in just under a month!

), and then comes summer

, but May feels like the time when the year truly begins. Must be that mind set of being in school, still sticking with me. I have my diploma now, all nicely framed

. Maybe it'll feel more real once I've done convocation in May. Lots of stuff happening in May. That's alright for me. I'm looking forward to May, and June, July, August. Gee, I can even look forward to September now. No school. None. Nada. Boy, if it doesn't sink in by then, there's a problem!

It'll take some getting used to. To get myself together for the next steps is taking some time. For now, I look forward to experiencing September, October, November and Decemeber without school for the first time in about

years. What a year 2009 will be!

Many knitting/crochetting projects can be taken on the bus, or a long car trip, or anything like that. I've prefected the technique of doing garter stitch while watching TV with a minimum of glances toward my project. Crochetting, not so much, but there's time.

It's April and I have no final projects to worry about. Yep, that's something else. Y'know what else is something else? The snow on the ground on this sunny April Day. I'm kinda hoping it'll all melt at once sometime this afternoon. Nature's own April Fools joke. What I should be worry about now is unhinging myself from this desk chair so I can go downstairs and a take a shower. Wish me luck, and happy AF day!

I got a book in the mail today, which I bought on Amazon - "Against the Wind", part of the Elfquest family of books/graphic novels. I was so happy when it came in - I love Elfquest, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to find it anywhere. Now I'm just waiting for one more: "Winds of Change".

Right now I'm pondering my last mintues submissions to the graduation catalogue/exhibit for this year, my graduation year. First January in a long time that I haven't had school. 19.5 years, to be exact. It'll probably feel more different around spring. I'm used to having a certain amount of time free of school in the winter, but not spring or fall. I know which paintings I'm going to submit as possibilities for the exhibit. Still deciding on the ones for the catalogue, so I decided to browse my gallery here. My fingers are getting friggin cold. Happens every time I work on the computer. Probably from being stationary so long, but I think this is also a cold corner of the house.

Obama is walking out now. Time for speeches, I guess. Actually, prayer and music. It's 12:58 now. Beautiful music. The hour is past, and at this time, Obama is now president....What truly beautiful music. Obama has taken the oath. 44th president....Now his speach. What a speech.

I'm so glad I was able to watch this today. I wonder how many people are at their places of work, watching right now. On facebook I'm seeing status updates such as "...extended his lunch break to witness history" and "...is celelbrating" and "...is very moved by president Obama's speech". Truly, such a day....

January has been busy so far. I just got a second job, working at Fabricville. So far it's stressful - I don't like it as much as my other job, but I'm gonna give it a chance. At least I don't have any homework. At the end of the day I can go home and do other things. Still getting into the groove though.

Got some things I can look forward to. I'm going to see the ballet 'Don Juan' on February 5th. My favorite dancer will be dancing the title role

He is so beautiful. Ballet is beautiful. Dance is beautiful.

Been meaning to make an entry for a while. Wanted to get my final paintings from last semester up first, and that took longer than it should have. But they're here now:

Had I taken another semester, I would have started school on Wednesday. The difference hasn't really become apparent just yet. I found out yesterday I have a new job. I'll be needing one now. It's a good thing - I'm trying to think of it as being like summer when I get a lot of shifts. That's what it'll be from now on. The job is at Fabricville. Retail again, but there are some nice perks. Sounds like there'll be opportunities to sew outfits and stuff for window displays. Together with the job I already have, I've got 6 shifts of work next week. That's one more step toward eventually getting my own place.

Holidays went well. Got to relax. Winter needs the holidays. It's such a downer otherwise. Gotta try & get happy. This is probably the most freedom I've ever had in my life. We'll see how it goes.

A big thankyou to everyone who helped me get this far

This Wednesday will be very last day of school. Period. At least until I decide to continue my post-secondary studies at a later date, if ever I do. I'm already feeling the relief. My 3rd painting is almost finished. I'm uploading the work-in-progress picture right now. Here's the whole set, as it stands right now:

I've actually done a little work on the 3rd one since this picture. Soon enough they'll all be posted. Each one is 5 feet tall.

At this point in this entry, I would like to pay respects to the memory of 14 women students of the Ecole Polytechnique who were murdered on this day in 1989. The unman who stormed the school, seperating men from women and then shooting the women, was heard screaming 'Your a bunch of feminists!' and 'I hate feminists!'. Apparently he blamed his not being able to get into the school on the fact that there were so many women attending. Some people say that the fight for equality is won. Some say it's impossible to win. I don't agree with either, really. We have come a long way, and the larger battles have been won. However, there are still sublter problems, not so much of legality, but mentality. Things are going alright, I suppose. I'm staying home today until the staff meeting at work. Managed to get some beds made as well as the calendar. This feels like a good day to get other things done. I'm also reading a book which I'm having a hard time putting down. It's an Elfquest chapter book, 'Wolfsong Volume 2, Blood of Ten Cheifs'. I've been trying to keep my Elfquest intake at a moderate level - it really is so addictive. I have 2 of the chapter books, and I found them both in used book stores. More recently I discovered that they can be purchased at the Eflquest site itself, [link] but the two I have are all sold out! So, very lucky finds indeed.

I have less than 2 weeks to go of school. 1 week come Wednesday. I've actually felt like it's December already for a couple of weeks now. I'll be glad tommorow that it is. I can feel my spirits lifting. I keep thinking of the things I'll have time to do once school is over. The 3rd painting is going well. I am getting my crit on the second week, my last day of classes, and I've decided I'll use the extra time to tighten up my paintings. Got some feedback on the blue one indicating it could use a little more work, so I may resubmit that in my gallery once that's done. Boy am I hungry! Last night I had the best pub food ever - it was at the Elephant & Castle, a new restaraunt in town, where

Got two installments to my semeser long project done, which feels good

. Yes, the third one will involve something yellow. Might be nice just to have the trio. Will have to see how the first 3 look together. I think if I still have time once the 3rd one's done, I'd better do a fourth anyway. That, of course, will depend on whether I get my final crit 1 week from Wednesday or 2.

Just stretched the paper for the 3rd installment today. Fellah came with me. It's been a while since I took Fellah anywhere, and he need to stretch his legs.....

I also brought home a smaller painting I've been working on during my spare time. I feel pretty good about how it turned out - and I've already had an offer made for it! 'Course it was from my Mom, but that still counts! There will be more like it, to be sure.....

There are officially 2 and a half weeks left in the semester. I seem to be staying on course. Now that there's so little time left in the term, the reality that I won't have to go back to classes in January is starting to hit me. And it's alright.....

I'm enjoying this being able to illustrate my journals. They look so much nicer this way - less boring. 'Till next time, world!

I'm going to the Fiest concert that's happening in town tonight

. That should be great. Less than a week ago I watched the Atlantic Ballet Theater of Canada dance 'King Lear'. It really was a good interpretation. I found elements of the set and lighting, as well as the figures of the dark seraphs, to be quite effective. Kosta Voynov was 'Edmond' in this one. His scenes were always interesting, and as always I just loved watching him dance.

I think I'd best get something to eat. And maybe some hot cocoa too. That's what I need. Later world!

More importantly, it was a reaction. From someone very familiar with the subject matter too. This is a guy whose job it is to walk through, on a regular basis, the spaces I chose for my distorted paintings. He could tell, for example, that in one of my paintings, I had matched an interiour and exterior which were not part of each other in real life. My dislike of the project was somewhat reduced. I would still rather be doing other things. Boggles the mind why I arrived at this choice of subject matter. I'll post some of my sketches in my scrapbook after I'm finished this journal entry, just for the curious. Embarking on a project I have no feeling for has thrown into sharp relief the things I actually like and want to do, which is not unhelpful. I approach the end of my final semester with a sense of reaching toward the light.

What else? I've been knitting. I'm still a beginner, and projects go slow, but it sure helps to keep me sane. There's a knitting shop downtown that has workshops now and then, and a 3-hour time slot every Thursday when people can just come in with their projects and knit. I've been able to get to one of those, and found it really enjoyable. There was a similar event a couple of weeks ago, where people were invited to come in and knit blanket squares for a charity called 'Afghans for Afghans', as well as socks and helmet liners for the Canadian troops. At the time, all I had the skills for were the blanket squares. I've since started learning to knit socks, even though the deadline has past. I think they may have another such event next year too, by which time I hope to have mastered at least the socks.

Today I plan to stay home for the most part, working on my writing/reading homework. In the evening, though, I'm going to see the ballet. It's 'King Lear', being put on by the Atlantic Ballet Theater of Canada

. That means another chance to watch Kostyantyn Voynov performing live

. Can't think of a nicer way to start November.

September has come and gone. It went pretty fast, and I'm not unhappy about that. I would like this semester to go fast. To think. By December 10th, I'll have finished my very last class of university. I can enjoy Christmas vacation and won't have to save up my paycheques for tuition anymore. I'll have to start looking for another part-time job, or a full-time one. Depends what comes up, I suppose. Depends what I need. Then I'll be looking at apartments & stuff. I suppose I won't be entirely done with school - I'll still want to take part in the wearable art show, if I can. I'm pretty sure I can. Just about everyone who's connected with the school is allowed

. And I'll have much more time to put things together! I wonder how it'll feel not to have school in January. That hasn't happened for 20 years of my life! I recently learned that December grads get their convocation in Februrary. Used to be April was the only convo time. So I'm glad to have all this to look forward to. I'm afraid there isn't much to say beyond that. I'm mostly trying to keep a good work ethic in the studio at school right now. The air is chilly, and it's hot cocoa season again. 'Tis week 3 of school for me. Fall downs have set in, I believe, because I have become quite tired, a sugar junkie, and absolutely paranoid about my ideas for the new semester. Does it seem as if some ideas shrivel and die as soon as they hit open air? That is to say, as soon as one tries to articulate them? Somehow, and this has happened before, I've ended up with a project idea and I can't imagine why I didn't choose something different. Would that have happened with any idea? I'm quite afraid that this might be the case. Not a pleasant thought, but I'm positive I could at least have picked something better suited to my strengths. It's a disease.

Maybe things'll seem better after class tommorow. Things aren't so bad. I'm better on track than I have been in previous semesters. I dropped in on a knitting group at the local knitting shop the other day, and enjoyed it very much. People bring their projects and sit there knitting. I'm making a rolley brim hat in this nice soft lavender coloured yarn I got at Value Village. Not sure what it's made of, but I'm pretty sure it isn't acrylic, or cotton, or wool. I'll get better at these things.

Today will be a day to get things done. Gotta get a bunch of things printed at school 'cause our printer at home decided to see if paper tastes good, and now it's convinced that it's still choking, even though Dad's made several attempts to fix it. Colour prints are a dollar a pop at school, but they're on nice paper, so I guess it's worth it. Dad came home from Germany on Sunday and gave me some nice drawing paper and a nice long apron for painting in

. I shall bring it to school today, where I shall paint dark pictures of complex spaces - spaces to get lost in. Spaces to get stuck in. I've found my school to be perfect visual reference material for that. I'll also be shopping. I need to pick up 6 canvasses, or at least the materials with which to make 6 canvases, some bright orange yarn and a roll of masking tape. It looks like a sunny day out there. Probably chilly, but not so bad.

7 years ago today I was in 12th grade english class. The teacher had gone out for something, I didn't notice what. He came back in hurriedly and put a radio down on the desk. I don't remember if he said anything. It took a few minutes for it to dawn on me what I was hearing. For the next few days it was all anyone talked about. I couldn't think of anyone I might have known who'd be directly effected by the tragedy, though

's place, just to make sure. For days the image of a tower shattering from the top down kept playing on the news.
Today is such a contrast with that day. The sun is shining, I'm sitting here in my bathrobe tapping away at the computer. I'll be working tonight. Hard to believe so much time has passed. There are kids 7 years old and younger now for whom the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have just always been happening. I went to the Tatoo last year, or maybe it was the year before, and during the show when they were honouring those that had fallen in Afghanistan they announced the 6 that had been killed that very day. You could hear the collective gasp of that stadium full of people. It seems like it's been such a long war. We just have to keep hoping that the goal will be reached, that peace will prevail.
Those are my thoughts for today, the anniversary of 9/11.

Months go by quickly. In 3 months, I'll be finished school. I wonder if those three will go by as quickly as the last 3.....I'll be able to set my own schedule to a ceratin extent, and plan my own projects, as long as my instructor thinks they're good. I've got ideas I want to try, so that's good. I'll have a studio space too , which is great! I'm not getting back to school right away - My first class is on the 10th. I should start getting ready for work now. Looks like thunderstorms today, which will likely drive the customers in.

Been watching the Olympics, like many of you out there. Hard to believe how scant second/fractions of seconds/millimeters can be the difference between gold and silver. Even harder to believe it when an athlete leaves the whole pack behind. So a Canadian no longer holds the Olympic record for the men's 100 meteres. Donovan Bailey, former record holder, fomerly of Jamaica but who won the gold for Canada in 1996, seemed quite glad to give up his title to Usain Bolt. I only wish we all could have seen what that guy was really capable of. He wasn't even trying the last 20 meters! He still won gold, still beat Donovan Bailey's record, and he still could have done it faster! I hope sometime we really get to see it....

In other news, Canada finally won some medals

8 years - pretty cool! I've been away in PEI for the past week. Not a lot of sun, but good times non the less. We made it down to the beach most days despite it being too cold to actually lie around in one's bathing suit. I actually went out swimming a couple of times

. I got some great pictures, and we had lots of friends renting cottages on the same compound. One thing I did a lot of was knitting. I managed to make a whole poncho by the end of the week, and a fingerless glove. I also bought lots of books.

, his GF and I went hunting for used bookstores as chance provided. On the way home we stopped in Charlottetown, where we enjoyed Cows icecream, 2 used bookstores, and a comic shop. We rode the ferry while we read our new books. It was a fine road trip! I've recenly gotten into the 'Elfquest' series of comics, and I was surprised at how often they popped up in my travels. So I have lots of new reading material. I gotta wrap this up so I can get ready for work. Happy belated birthday deviantart!

This is an entry I wanted to make a while ago, but didn't yet have the means. I'm thinking it must have been in early/mid April:

The semester is over, and life is pretty good. I've moved into a new purse, visited my brand new cousin for the first time, gone shopping, watched Happy Feet, and attended dance classes. And it's been really sunny

! Best of all, I'm getting back to other projects I'd wanted to work on during the winter semester, but didn't have the time.

Tea has been my best friend during the last week of the semester , which was a little bit torturous. I think this Daily Deviation shows my feelings for this soothing and supportive beverage very well:

, and I thought it was just darling! This artist's work is definitely woth a look.) Almost every night I was staying up until 2:00 AM or later. The semester really flew by. On the plus side, I now know how to knit, crochette, needle felt, make clothes patterns by draping material on the body form, and a thing or two about the history of photography.

Now I can embark on a summer of working up money for my last semester. I'll be doing a studio class, for which I will have to have some ideas for my future instructor to approve, and which I will then execute independantly. Then I graduate. Hard to believe....this will be one of the things I'll be working toward this vacation.

In the meantime, I'm feeling better than I've felt in a while

Today was sunny, but extremely windy, almost too much so to bike. Been getting more excersize lately, which is good. Work was alright tonight. There was one birthday party, and the parents were very nice - even gave me a slice of pizza

! The kids were good too - a bunch of 11-year-olds, which is a noticeable difference from the usual 5-7 year old crowd. The all painted penguins. Penguin figurines are popular. I never saw such a mottley crew of penguins.

Watch the top 20 perform on So You Think You Can Dance last night. A very good first night for just about everyone. No strictly negative reviews, at least. So much fun to watch.....once you get past the audition period. Then again, tonight 2 people get cut. That's got to be just about the toughest position to be in. First one to go. Second is probably not much better. After that, at least there's been some time to show what you can do!
I'll be dancing tonight as well - 2nd last jazz class. Then I'll be concentrating on earning money for the rest of the summer. Also thinking about scholarships, and similar things. I've been able to get in a lot of drawing these days, for which I'm glad. I guess that's my status right now.

There's no skill involved. You get to know what percentage of a chance you have at winning each game/battle, but even if you lose you don't lose any points/gold. You gain gold depending on how high or low your chances of winning were. You can also choose to give gold to your friends, any time the button appears by their names. No skill involved, nothing to lose....It's the silliest thing, and it's oddly addictive. It's a good thing it doesn't take up much time to play it.....Of course that may be part of what makes it so easy to get in to.

First day of March. It's going to be a busy month. I had a lovely night last night. I went to see the Phantom of the Opera ballet (an ABTC production). I think it's one of the best I've seen by that company, though the only other ones I've seen are 'Merlin' and 'Don Juan', and they're all good. Once again, another chance to watch Kostyantyn Voynov perform is one I can't miss

. He was Christine's lover Raoul, and I think the role suits him very well. There was a lot of pas-de-deux work that looked so difficult. It must be so exhausting to do a ballet like that - it's full of lots of fast choreography and drama.

Ah well, all good things must come to an end. Today I have my last day of classes before study break. Fridays are my favorite school day of the week. I look forward to the project we'll be starting in FFF. Part of my homework this week was to felt a wool sweater (ie put it through a warm wash with water, then put it through the dryer - ruin it, essentially), which we are going to cut appart today and rebuild into something new using crochetting and needle felting. Those were our two in-class activities last week. I think I got the hang of crochetting, and neelde felting is definitely fun

. Another thing I like about Fridays is the fries, made by Gary who works in the student lounge cafe

I think I might have to do an inbox purge today. Once again, I've allowed things to pile up. School is going well. I'm thoroughly enjoying Intermediate Fiber Fabric Fashion. I'm actually learning to knit! This week we start crochetting. Never thought I'd be able to do these things for a 3rd year university course. Don't laugh, it's not easy! In the meantime, I've got to finish a primary bodice sloper for Draping by days end. So far that's going OK too. Gotta get some studying done for History of Photography too. I'm taking that one 'cause I need a 3rd year art history - so far it's been interesting. We'll see how it goes once we start getting big projects, which will happen tommorow. Right now I'm camping out in the living room on the computer while the house gets cleaned. This has been an update
