I got there about 5-10 minutes after it started. The fire was about 15'x30' feet and there was a middle age man with a pot belly walking around in it and stomping on it. At first I assumed it was one of the many controlled burns that are done here in Colorado, but the location and timing of seemed critically stupid. It was placed at a trail head at the western part of El Dorado Canyon. Starting next to Chute road, it was a sloping grassland valley that heads strait for the front range. Further there was a wind moving from west to east, driving it like mad.

He hadn't called 911 yet, which I then ameliorated and the tried to assist and starting to get it out. Every time the wind gusted, the flames grew taller than I so it quickly became clear that being literally in the part that was burning was rather foolish, I switched to photo mode. The firefighters started to trickle in around 10-15 minutes later and really didn't going until about 45 minutes after I called. They had to bring in trucks with water tanks, because there wasn't any water sources available. Once they had shown up, I was shooed off the plain and was not allowed to accompany them down the valley.

The middle aged man with the belly started it by accidentally hitting a power line with a backhoe.

Photos incoming

Newspaper story
[link]

They offered me 20$/mo internet and I couldn't say no.

I went to the Sand Dunes a few days back and first evening there my 30D decided that it was good place to die. It won't power up but the status light blinks once when I insert a memory card or when I insert a battery while a memory card is there. I called canon and it's all symptomatic of a faulty or loose wire. Here's for hoping it doesn't cost me a fortune to fix it. I don't want to replace it yet (in part because I don't have the cash) but also because I want to eventually make it an IR dedicated camera.

I'll still be shooting some MF film and maybe some 35mm, but it the costs add up :<

Everyday that I have a decent chunk of free time, I will go hiking in the mountains. I am going to be spending my spring break in Hawaii backpacking and I definitely going to need to get into fabulous shape. I will be the only one on that trip lugging any real amount of camera, and I want to be able to hike further and faster than them so I can stop and take photos when I want to.

Location wise I have been hitting up the first place I ever went to shoot mountains, Golden Gate Canyon near Denver. It is a short, pleasant drive over there and if the clouds cooperate I can decent landscapes or just hit up the numerous ruined cabins in its boundaries. Hanging Lake is a less pleasant, 2.2hour drive with a particularly nasty mile hike up to it. I will be going there at least one more time this winter season, and then again when the days get longer and the plants wake up. Rocky Mountain National Park is off until the days get long enough for it to be worth while to do three day camping trips over there.

I want to start trying to apply to actual galleries around Denver, but I have no idea where or how to start.

I am sorry I am so quiet, but I have never really understood these journal things on websites. You may have notice a rash of Rebel Xt shots and medium format stuff, this is due to my camera being broken. An unfortunate drop damaged it rather badly, landing flash shoe first, and had to be shipped off to canon for repair along with a lens. The lens was my canon 10-22, and was jammed by a friend dropping. Not a good time.

I have been trying to develop myself as a photographer, trying to choose a particular style to use. From class, people say the black and white, Ansel Adams style of landscapes, and the creepy or dead animal shots are the best stylistically. Which type of photos would you prefer? More long exposure rocks and black and white landscapes, or more abandoned buildings and dead animals?

I miss zoos.

Our part of Project Chanology went very well. We met up at a nearby park at 10am and then marched down to their 'church' at 10:45. Handed out fliers there for until noon at which point we went 2 blocks up the street to catch the lunch rush on a busy street. At 12:30 we went back hoping that they would come out after their service, which ended at 1:00, but we found out they used the buildings other exits.

Public reaction was excellent. The majority were supportive, honking, requesting fliers, and or more information. There were a few frowners, but you can't win them all over. Anonymous was well behaved and only shouted anti-scientology slogans with no memes. Signs were we also excellent, very few meme references.

As usual the CoS had parked a fake moving van in front of their church, which seems to have become fairly common for these, or so I've heard. We had 2 people filming us while trying to vaguely hide behind the blinds, one man come out and photographed us quite a lot, he was taunted much. Another scientologist watched from the roof of the building and more were out and around watching us. They followed some of us after the protest as well. None of the scientologist used the front door, but used the rear and side exits to avoid us.

Most importantly though, there were no confrontations with either police, who were polite and courteous if out in insane numbers (12+ cars, and man officers on foot), and no confrontations with the scientologists.

Overall, huge success.

Finally managed to get back out to go hiking. Those last two photo assignments killed me. HATE HATE HATE portraiture, never have enjoyed going for the sake of shooting people. If I see a photo with peeps in it I'll snap it, but doing just that drives me nuts. Apparently Denver has a decent Zoo, one of these days I'll slip out and get some animal photos going . Next up is still life; fun stuff if I had access to my Ted's macro equipment/ had anything worth photographing in my dorm.
