So, during the Christmas break my mum and I set up a fish tank. This wasn't the first time we'd done this, but it was the first time we'd done one so large. It must be a good 20-30 gallons. Previously, we'd set it up and stock it with a few fish a couple of days after. And that's what we did this time.

Only, after doing some research I found out you're supposed to let the tank cycle water for a few weeks before getting fish. This is to let all the chemicals balance out and to give time for beneficial bacteria to grow. So, when we put these fair sized fish in, it unbalanced the water levels, stressing the fish. Over the next few weeks our four gouramies died. Meanwhile, our glass catfish simply disappear. We're quite certain the peacock eel ate them.

Now, beyond our own stupidity, the pet store (petsmart) sold us two crabs. We were informed that they would need access to air or they'd drown. That was all well and good. What they forgot to mention was that they were a brackish water animal. They'd eventually die if left in fresh water. In fact, as I did more and more research on them, I found out that many species sold in pet stores as fresh water are actually brackish, these include puffer fish, most gobbies, and archer fish. Also, all those lovely cichlids really should have a special mixture of salts and minerals in their water.

Not everything turned out bad, mind. We were forced to get another tank (five gallons) which I got to bring with me to school. So, as I'm typing this I have two crabs (a boy and girl) and two bumblebee gobbies happily crawling and swimming beside me. It's all much more work than a tank of goldfish or a betta, but much more interesting.

I suppose the moral is to research any pets you get before you get them. Even the small inexpensive ones.

Clubs

Yeash, I've had this account four years. I should submit more often. I should update more often, last was over a year ago. Anyway, my photoshop skills have greatly improved. Perhaps not as much as I'd like, but hey, I'm self taught. (Sorry, I need to preen now and then.)

Going back to school soon, so, despite logic, I'll probably update more! I seem to be most productive when I have enough responsibilities that my free time is precious, but not so many that I have NO free time.

Not taking any art classes this semester, at this, my new college, despite declaring myself an art minor. It seems that minors mean shit. I still have to ask permission to join even the most rudimentary classes, instead of signing up online. And, of course, all the art classes being offered at my level are the second class of a two semester course.

But, whatevs. The classes I do have will be pretty cool: Bio part two, Math part two (interesting once you get over the soul crushing confusion,) Neuro Psychology, Anthropology, and Chinese 1 (because all their Japanese 2 classes only happen in the fall, when I couldn't sign up, and their one Latin 1 class filled up before I was even allowed to sign up.)

The irony is, often people who really want to take X class can't because someone else signed up for X 'cause they couldn't sign up for Y class 'cause someone else signed up for Y 'cause they couldn't sign up for Z class 'cause someone else signed up for A. A vicious cycle which the bureaucrats running the school would be spending their time well to address.

I mean, I had to beg to get into Bio 1, of which there were four separate times which it was offered, all seating up to three hundred and fifty students, because all the classes were filled with people taking it to fill a general education requirement.

Gra. Well, when I'm a senior+2 I'll at least get the first pick of classes, and will finally be able to fulfill the requirements I wanted to four years earlier.

Clubs

I recently stumbled upon a very funny anime, Keroro Gunsou. Translated, I believe it's something like "Sargent Ribbit," though officially they use Sargent Frog. It's about an alien platoon from planet Keron come to invade earth. At first you may notice a few things in common with Invader Zim, but quickly it becomes apparent they are thoroughly different, but both hilarious.
I'm rather fond of Kururu, the maniacal hacker-genius of the group.
It's yet to really catch on with us English speakers, but I have a feeling it will soon. So jump on the bandwagon before it's even cool! You can find translated episodes on the web. Not gonna say where for liability reasons.

(On a completely unrelated note: Veoh.com is a pretty cool site, rather like youtube.)

But, because it's not popular you can't find lyrics to the totally awesome songs. So, I sat and wrote them down as I watched. I'll go over them with a friend who speaks the language and see about posting them.

UPDATE!

Here's the song in Romanji:

Shinryakusha!

Ya ya ya
Wo wo wo
Yay ya ya

Shinryakusha!

Ai o kudasai motto motto kudasai
Ii ja nai no heru mon ja aru mai shi

Anata no tame ni iki te iki tai
Zeitaku sasete kureru nara

Do ya do
Yume no tsuzuki
Do ya do
Doyado misasete yone

Gambari makutte yattaru de
Sonde mo tama ni wa hitoyasumi
Dosuka? Dosuka? Dosuka!
Konnan de dosuka?

Zettai no
Zetsumei no pichi wa

Koshi futte
Go makase Dancing Dancing

Ai to yuuki to ninki hoshii yo (hoshii)

Konjou to kiai de yarimasu
Iraira ni wa gyuunyuu de calcium

Umaku ika nai nara
Sore wa bouya dakara sa

Wo wo wo

Shinryakusha

`````````````
Yey! Well, most of the credit goes to whoever is translating these episodes. They put the song in Kana, so I was able to transliterate from that. My friends helped by telling me where one word stopped and another began. (Japanese doesn't have spaces (SHOCK))
If you want to listen to the actual song go to youtube and type in "Keroro ending 5." If that doesn't work, try "Keroro ending 4."
I'm supposed to be writing an analyze essay right now, but I am having trouble getting started. I wanted to write it about why humans wear clothes, however I have found very little worthwhile information on the subject. I'm thinking I'll just do it on Avatar, the last airbender.
Yes they're related, shut up.
On another note, I just finished the first book in The Bartimaeus Trilogy, much of the reading was done instead of writing. I really enjoyed it. A couple interesting points in the writing style: whenever the story switched between the main characters, it also switched point of view. When fallowing Bartimaus it was in first person, for Nathanial it was third person. Also, when Bartimaus told the story he included plenty of footnotes. These were often just side comments, but quite funny.
You know what, I may have figured out what I'll write about!
Yeah, so a thousand page views. Yay me.
I'm writing a fanfic. "Oh, wow. A fanatical fiction. Great..." Shut up. This is sort of a test drive. I wanna get something finished and out of my system, even if it's not original.
About, uhhh, blank years ago I wrote a short fanfic, MAYBE two pages. I was very proud. I decided I was now ready for novels. I had a basic plot and no idea how to get through it and most likely no end. I eventually ran out of steam and stopped.
This happened a few times. Eventually I put everything on the back burner (some of these have been cooking for over five years now.) I mulled them over and worked out plot lines. I drew the characters and put them in the odd strip or two.
Three months ago I started part time college and applying to four years. This meant writing. I sit down and I type. And type. And type! I was turning out nearly a thousand words a day. It was amazing! I could write.
For so long I was fearful that I would never be able to get these ideas out of my head, so scared that all of my projects would end before they begun. But now I could do it.
I wanted to make something. I wanted to write a story from beginning to end. None of my stuff was ready though. There were plot holes and missing steps. I would write a fanfic then. So I thought and thought, but no inspiration struck. Then a little spark. Just a little meager spark.
It was by no means a blockbuster idea, just a little giggle piece. But then it got bigger. The original plot is all but forgotten in the fifty pages of linguistical weaving. It might even be good. My mom likes it. (:
But the middle! I have hit the middle! It's like I am running a marathon. I hit the fifty mile mark. (yeah right, I can't run fifty meters) I'm tired, panting. There's a hill. Not a big hill. But I pant and sweat. My legs feel like they will rend themselves apart, all the pulling and contracting. I'm crawling, in and hour I can only move a hundred feet, a paragraph an hour, a night.
If I can only get over this freaking hill, this bump, this block. I can do it, I will do. Even if I have to pull myself, body bloody with grit in the wounds, across the finish line. It's not even a matter of the story. I will complete this to break this constriction. I will finish this because I need to! Homework be damned!
Blargue.
So, I'm applying to colleges and all that jazz, one of the more annoying processes to go through. Because I have had an unusual education most of the forms don't apply to me, some I end up having to leave almost entirely blank.
I only just found out I have a guidance counselor, so apparently my school doesn't just throw you into the world and say fuck it. They just throw you into the world and pretend they won't help you. So I send her the common application guidance counselors section with my part signed by hand and scanned in as a JPEG. To which she replies that she was unable to print the JPEG and that it looks like "toilet paper" and is useless anyways. And she said my hand writing looks like that of a thirteen year old illiterate's. I admit that it does, but wow.
She says I need to send her the Common Application School Report, which is what I thought I had sent her.
So, I'm stumped, hurt and angry. This is the sort of attitude that makes me want to cut ties with them.
And of course if anyone reads this they'll just think it sounds all emo ranty, and chances are in two days so will I. But that's what blogs are for.
Wow, I leave for six months and come back to find I have a pic with 40 faves! I guess the best publicity is none at all.
Anyhoot. I returned Monday after staying a night in Chicago. It was pretty cool how the buildings disappeared into the fog. The cold and rain, not so much. I was damn tired though. I kept waking up because I was used to Italian time. That and I was worried about missing my flight back home. Do you know how many dreams I had where I missed it?! I had to ask superman to fly me home. I couldn't do it myself because my bags were to heavy.
So I'm home and scrambling to apply to colleges. Basically I'm in the same place as when I left, metaphorically and physically. So if anyone knows some good colleges with strong art and science programs let me know!
Why don't people flush after going to the bathroom? Is it too much work to push down the handle? Are they trying to leave a canine-esqu mark behind? And especially after taking a shit. It's not like taking the extra second will make you any later after taking three minutes to squeeze it out.
Maybe they want others to see it? A little, 'hey, look what I did! Isn't it neat?' Well it's not. You're not unique; almost everyone can take a shit. If you want to be different you should leave it empty. S'not like your poop is special. Chances are it's gonna be the same general shape as everyone else’s. And even if it's an odd color, like red or yellow, it still stinks!
Ok, if it was blue I'd like to see it.
But, I still stand on my 'flush after you pee' opinion.
I won't be able to get any of this up for a while due to scannerlessness. Expect the first pages in maybe two and a half to three weeks. In the meantime I made another short Zim comic which you can expect in about a week and a half!
Of course, it's not like anyone is really waiting on me or anything.
I remember oh, so, long ago the watching of this movie. Watching it again is so odd because it's become ingrained in my childhood. A scene here a lyric there will open up such an odd feeling of... I don't know, deja vu I suppose.
I remember going for walks in the woods with my sister looking for the holiday doors.
On another note, my Dad has informed me that he does not like me acting like I am in a movie. That it is disconcerting when he's talking to me and I brake out in maniacal laughter or dramatic sobs. I will try to tone this down around him.
Hello my people.
A little while ago I set off on a mission and have been asked to write about it and, since I said yes, and don't have much to do at the moment, I will.
It all started when a friend of mine told me about an event being held at the Brattleboro museum of art called the 24-hour comic book challenge. Some of you may of heard of this before, but for those who haven't, it's where an artist (or anyone really) sits down to make a comic book consisting of 24 pages in 24 consecutive hours.
As, you can guess this is no easy feat.
I, of course, decided to go, though I was worried. I on average would work on a comic page off and on for about two days, and the longest book I'd ever done (thirteen pages) took me nearly half a year. But, the day before the event I got packed and ready, bought my snacks and energy drinks, and drove off to Vermont. This feat alone impressed my friends as I’ve never gone on such a long trip without a guide. It took me twice as long to get there then should have.
The friend who I mentioned earlier was kind enough to let me stay at his house where I planed to sleep as long as I could before leaving the next day, however he wished to go to a concert and I didn't want to stay there alone. He has no TV. It was decided that ten hours of sleep was enough and the thirteen or so I had planned was a bit ridicules.
We had pizza, though I could barely eat it due to my new braces, (Oh the pain!)
The next day I awoke at ten, readied myself, and drove to Brattleboro. It was a little after eleven that I arrived to find many people already there. The museum was a lot smaller then I expected, having only about six rooms (plus a kitchen and bathroom) One of these was devoted to sleep and the rest had tables set up through out. I set up camp in a room featuring still life paintings and had three tables set up, though I could see people in the next room.
11:30 comes and we're called into the main room to hear the opening announcements. One of the speakers was a professional named Stephen Bissette. He was the second ever to make a 24-hour comic when his friend Scott McCloud had the idea. He gave the good advice not to drink caffeine until the late hours so you don't crash early on.
At twelve the challenge began. At twelve 'O three I started. (I had to get some stuff from my car.)
Now, previously I had thought up two storys. One involved a robot and space travel, but that one seemed a bit too complicated to try. So I went for the second which involved a thief and a strange city that put great weight in names.
This was more familiar territory as it was fantasy instead of sci-fi.
I had two other people at my table, a sixteen year old girl who was drawing manga, and a twenty something girl who could easily have been professional. For privacy sake we'll call them "N" and "M".
So my pencil hit paper and I started on my first page. It was all dark and shaded. I did another, also dark and shaded.
On it went, and some times I would think; 'now this's not bad, I have half an hour to spare.' At which point I would hit a wall and not know what to do next, or couldn't get a panel right, or go to the bathroom, and BOOM I'm back on schedule with a page an hour.
It looks like I won’t get any sleep after all.
Pizza arrives, donated by local stores, and we take a break to eat. Once again this is an ordeal for me due to the wire bending my teeth. I am forced to swallow things only half chewed. I worry for my digestive track.
Two pieces later I announce I must get back and make up for the fifteen minutes lost, my table mates laugh. I'm not joking.
As the night wears on it occurs to me it's a good thing there's no windows in this room to mark the passage of time. This way my body can't keep track of the time by the sun.
A problem I run into is the various parts of my body that hurt. The one I already mentioned was my teeth. My mouth in general hurts because whoever designed braces is a moron and used pointy edges in them. Also I had gotten a cut earlier that (though I didn't know it at the time) was turning purple under the Band-Aid. But these things wouldn't really become major players until later. What was really driving me mad was hunching over my drawings.
My back and neck were killing me and no position I tried would relieve all my pains. It wasn't 'till I joined M, who had moved to the floor, that any relief was had.
By this time it was late at night and the friend who I was staying with had already come to see me and was gone for the night. I had begun listening to my CDs, Dixie chicks, Indigo girls, and Disney songs were on the list but it was mostly Green day and Jewel that I played since they simply fit with the mood of my story better.
I was a bit worried I wouldn’t have enough s...
