***Thank you so very much to everyone who has watched me and added my work to their favourites, it feels great to know that people still like my stuff!***

Gone? Why! How selfish!
It has been almost 8 months since I’ve posted anything in this journal, and nearly as long since I’d posted anything in my gallery. I don’t really have any one solid reason for my ridiculously long absence; it was more an accumulation of things that just got to me. It was odd, I was frustrated with my inability to do anything right (more than usual) and just didn’t feel like drawing anymore. My heart wasn’t in it and I just wasn’t getting excited about drawing, seeing drawings, or reading about drawing… all of it just seemed to add salt to the wound.

School for the last year has also been a tremendous pain in the butt, my course load was crazy with some classes, and that didn’t help in wanting to draw. With papers and readings and research projects it was pretty much the last thing on my mind. Overall, I just doubted my ability to do anything ‘right’ and put off anything drawing related for the year. I'm back now, and am getting used to the changes on dA. I let my subscription run out, and am thinking about entering a contest or something to get it back (broke as hell is not fun haha)so let me know if you know of any fun contests. I never win those things but if it's a fun subject it would be worth it anyway.



*UPDATES*

New Dog
As for updates in my life, we got a dog in November from the Humane Society, her name is Blitzen (they must have been on a Christmas kick at the SPCA, another dog was named Rudolph) and she’s a sweetheart. She’s a mix (according to the vet and the SPCA) of Australian Red Heeler, Husky, and (maybe) German Shepherd. Pictures of the crazy fool can be seen here:

Visit from Grandma
Also, my dad sprung the best surprise ever on my mom. He went to Finland in November, and arranged it so that my grandmother flew back with him. I knew about it because I had to go to the travel agency to check all her information, but my mom had no idea. We told her that my dad’s friend was coming to visit so that we could get the guest room ready without suspicion, but she had no inkling it would be her mom. We even planned it so that I would go get them from the airport that night, and when we walked in the front door and my grandmother said “greetings from Finland!” my mom was absolutely shell shocked. Her expression was priceless. Grandma was here for three months; long enough to celebrate Christmas and New Year, my youngest brother’s 9th birthday, and her 71st birthday with us. February 25th, the day she had to fly back was a very sad and scary day. Sad because she was going back and who knew when we’d see her again, scary because she does not speak English and had a layover in Minneapolis and Amsterdam, and because Schipol airport had just had the Turkish airplane crash (on that same day). She made it home safe and sound, and now has fabulous stories to tell about her trip to Canada and her return to Finland via the US and Holland. That woman is my hero.

As for school, I’m done for the year but have to take some Spring/Summer courses. They start tomorrow, we’ll see how that goes.

Art Class
I also took an art class in my last Winter semester, and made some fabulous friends (one of them being ~KBTheArchitect go say hi). The class was just an introduction to art fundamentals and included many a still life, some messy charcoal, and awkward greenhouse drawings, but I really enjoyed it. It forced me to work on art, and allowed me to loosen up with my work. Our Professor and TA were very much about not being too detail oriented and getting the basics down with loose lines and brushwork, and I really enjoyed not over-analyzing everything to death. I may post some of the crazy things we did in class, but that all depends on whether I work up the energy to drag the portfolio out of my closet.

Old Age
I turned 21 on April 18th, good bye to my fair youth and hello depends, walkers, dentures, and cochlear implants. Secondly, I'll be adding some thumbnails of my favourite pieces from my gallery into my 'footer', thought I only have a couple there now. I'm trying this because I've seen some other folks do this and realize it's a cool way to show more than the four most recent pieces, and the crappage currently cluttering my page is a disgrace... hopefully the little thumbs will give an idea to passers by of the other stuff my gallery has to offer. It also made me realize that I really need to try drawing more, even if it’s only for 10 minutes during some of my breaks.

I wanted to ask you guys, what is or are your favourite pieces in your gallery and why? I know the pieces we like best aren’t always the ones that everyone else seems drawn to, and wanted to see the stuff that you feel most proud about or think should have more recognition. Comment with a link to your favourite pieces (limit of three please) and just give me a little blurb about what makes it/them special to you, I’d love to read what you guys have to say. You don’t have to include the why if you don’t want to, but I think it would be interesting to include it since I’d like to make a journal feature about the works and I’m sure I’m not the only curious one here. :)

As for all of your gorgeous arts, I shall favourite away as I usually do, but I might not leave a deep and insightful comment because I don't have it in me at the moment to respond to all 900+ pieces.
My trip was fabulous, I basically just spent time with family, ate lots of grandma's fabulous food, and played tourist like mad. The contrasts between cultures are actually greater than I thought, and I was pleasantly surprised as well as disappointed by some things.
I'll be uploading pictures onto facebook so if anyone has a deep urge to peruse through a million and fifty snapshots feel free to add me there. Aicha Kouyate, the picture's the same one as is being used for my ID right now. I also have some new art to upload soon, waking up uber early and going to sleep past midnight were somewhat productive in an arty sense.
I hope you're all well, let me know what's going on with you, I'd love an update!!

I'm going to Finland for three weeks (we leave on the ninth and the anticipation is killing me!!) because I haven't seen my Grandparents in almost 10 years now, and our family is finally going back for a visit. We moved to Canada when I was nine and have only been back once (for Christmas when I was about 11) since it's ridiculously expensive and inconvenient to haul over a family of five, make sure everyone can get the vacation time they need, have no interference with school, never mind finding a place to stay. Things finally worked out this year and we're able to to go, so I've been working over time and weekends for the last month in order to make some extra money for the trip. It'll be almost a month in which I'll have no income and will be spending without a qualm (heck, I have ten years to make up for!!) and I'll still have to pay for school next year, so I've been trying to rack up the hours in order to get in a decent pay check or two before we take off. I've basically been leaving the house at 7:45 in the morning and not getting back home until about 8:00 each night what with work and helping the rentals with driving the brothers around. Safe to say I've had no motivation for drawing. I usually crash pretty soon after getting home, and lately have woken up at about 3 or 4 in the morning fully clothed with lights full on. I keep thinking that I just have to endure one more full week or work and then I'll be free for three weeks.
I do have something to post this weekend, and depending on how crazy it is over here I might even have two things. No promises there though!
Thank you everyone for the lovely comments in my inbox and my notes, I'll be getting back to you for sure! Same with your fabulous art, I might not do it right away but I'll be commenting and faving like mad this weekend.

School's officially done, I'm just waiting to get my grades back, but so far all looks good :D I'm working full time as of last week Wednesday (8:30-5:00), so drawing time is a tad limited but not nearly as much as during the school year when I worked, had classes and homework.

My fabulously cool friend *SweetChile drew this gorgeous, ovary melting, testosterone filled picture of none other than Mr. Gerard "sex-on-legs" Butler

after we spent hours swapping pictures etc. of our favourite guys (I have a new appreciation for Axl Rose and spandex :lol:). I almost died because of my near fall from my spinny chair, but what a way to go! Those eyes are just unreal, talk about shmexiness. Ladies, fair warning though, wrap yourself in a plastic bag before viewing, otherwise you might find yourself with child.

Also, my Glass Study:

was made the Pencil Club's Daily Deviation on the 24th, that was really cool, so thank for all the faves and watches from that!

I also have promised projects and pressies for people that I'll be trying to finish up this week. Sorry for my lateness, I keep skipping between them and progress is slowish.

As for the ID contest thing, I'm trying to work out the details for that and think of a suitable deadline and prizes etc, so I should be getting back to everyone interested in that soon :D

I know I get really annoyed when I see someone's random webcam photo/MS Paint scribble/scrap doodle on lined paper where I expect to see quality work, and I bet you do too. If you haven't already, please go and vote because I know all of you self respecting artists want your work well represented in the appropriate gallery, and not with someone's photo of their new shoes or a drunk squirrel or something.
Come on, exercise that right to free speech! :D

My head hurts, I'm dizzy, shaky, I can't breathe and my nose feels like it had a hardcore make-out session with sandpaper. :(
I haven't replied to all my messages and my Deviation in bin is looking mite full, but I'll get to them asap, I promise. I have to finish a painting for a baby shower and the book I was supposed to read over Reading Week, so I'll be a bit slow, just bare with me please, I promise I'll get to them this week. :please:

On a more upbeat note, I got my print! It came on Friday and I almost bowled over my brother because he didn't get out of my way fast enough. Let me just say, the print looks 1000x better than the picture on the computer screen, I actually squealed like a girly girl once I'd destroyed the box and got it out of there. The amount of detail in this picture is unreal and my favourite part has to be the eyes. They're so beautiful.
So everyone should get a copy of it, it's that fabulous.

First, thank you to everyone who sent in a photo for me to draw, I really appreciate it guys! :hug:
I decided that it's way too hard to try and pick just 3 or 4, so what I'll do is 3/4 in color, and the rest in pencil or conte. I figured that since you guys were kind enough to take the time to send me a photo, the least I can do is draw you whether it's in color or not. Don't look for them right away though, since I'll start them after I'm done what I'm currently working on, and they'll take me a while.


Second, I won a print of *crhino's fantastic "Bamboo Tiger" oil painting:

I entered $spinegrinder's print contest, and I actually won something for maybe the first time in my life!!
I'm super excited to get it, I wish the mail wasn't so slow!


Third, *whizzywhizzer drew this fabulous picture of me!

I still can't believe how fantastic this drawing is since he worked from one of the cruddiest photos ever. Everyone and their cousin should go give him some love, and take a look at his fantastic gallery since it's full of awesomeness just like this.

I'm in this Prismacolor kick right now, and I'm trying to figure out how to get realistic textures and skintones and I need references. As much as I like me, there's no way I'm drawing myself more than once. . . besides, I can't grow a beard or change my skin/eye color.
So if you care at all about my mental well being and artistic future (feel compelled yet?) please leave a message here or note me with a link to a nice, clear photo (color please) that shows your face from the shoulders up. Thigs like hats/earrings/moustaches/crazy makeup etc. are totally cool, and even encouraged.

I think I'd like to do 3 or 4, and I'll pick the ones that are the least similar.
Bonus points to anyone with really nice blue or green eyes. :giggle:

Can we all just take a minute to say 'Oh Hell!' to the temperatures over here? All of a sudden Mother Nature dumped two feet of snow on us, and the DAY TIME HIGH WAS -42 DEGREES CELCIUS with the damn wind chill. Without the gale force winds it would have been a balmy -30.
Safe to say my car didn't start (hell, I didn't want to either). This disgusting weather is supposed to last for the next week, and I don't know if I'll make it.
Any of you in the tropics? Can you adopt me?

Slack off on the messages etc. for a few days and you get your butt kicked with a harpoon gun.
I've been off and on the computer for the last few days because of some crud that's been going on, and have been trying to catch up on messages and such today.
Holy Moses with golden sandals, I had almost 60 messages to go through, never mind the 92 deviations that I haven't even poked at yet. This is what happens when you slack off for a few days.
I'll be replying late, don't hate me please.
Anywho, it's a new week and hopefully it's a bit better than this last one.

His voice is smooth as silk, he's charming, funny, and just plain rocks.
I'm so ridiculously excited, I've been a huge fan of his since Grade 8.
We've had tickets for a few months now, but it's just starting to set in that he's going to be here and I get to see this fabulous performer live.

1.) I'm ridiculously tall. Just a bit over 6ft, or for those who are metrically inclined, about 183 cm.

2.) I was born in Helsinki, Finland, but moved to Canada when I was 9. People are always surprised because I don't exactly look like the stereotypical Scandinavian. (My dad's from West Africa, my mom's the blue eyed blonde).

3.) I still speak Finnish, but it's getting pretty rusty these days.

4.) I'm a sucker for accents. Scottish, Irish, English, Australian, Romanian etc etc. It's like someone's speaking in song, and accents make everything sound delicious. It's one of those "you could read to me out of the phonebook and I'd still hang on every word" things.*Sigh*

5.) I love traveling. Flying, roadtrips, whatever! I'm always game. Nothing more exhilerating than lift-off. . . you know that feeling you get when you first feel the wheels come off the tarmac? Love it! I wish I could travel for a living.

6.) I have a few dA pet peeves. First one is when you leave a nice, thought out comment on someone's work, and they can't even respond with a "thanks". Second is when people fail to write artist's comments under their deviations, and instead put a variation of the "... / :) / :heart:". Please, if you can't say anything about your art, why do you think anyone else will (I love reading the artist's comments, you learn so much more about the piece and the artist). My last, and probably biggest one, is when you ask for advice from someone, and they don't deem you worthy of an answer... or are people just scared of giving away their trade secrets? Pfft, bite me.

7.) I love reading. Books are fantastic, nothing like 'em. Say, is there anyone out there who's read/reading the In Death series by J.D. Robb? It's my favourite!

8.) I would die without chocolate. . . and by that I mean I would lose a lot of weight, and be nice and skinny.

I tag no one because I'm not a big fan of 'em.

I hope your holiday season is filled with the things that make you happy and bring you the most joy, and hopefully you get to share the holidays with loved ones and those closest to you.

My brothers and I will spend the day (later today, yikes!) helping my mom make some traditional Finnish Christmas dishes, and I'm quite looking forward to it. We'll also continue in our tradition of celebrating the holiday and exchanging gifts on Christmas Eve, and staying cuddled up in our beds on Christmas morning.

I still have a wee bit to do gift wise, but all in all I'm done... and flat broke. I always go overboard with the pressies because I start so late, then buy everything in sight. It's a disease, really.

Anyway, regardless of which holiday you celebrate at this time of year, happy holidays to everyone; may your Christmas and New Year be full of the things you love best.

Anyway, the worst of the exam stretch is over as of yesterday, now I plan to lazy around for all of today, then it's back to work (literally) on Monday. The 'rents come home in 4. Yay. Hopefully I manage to refrain from locking the brothers in the basement.

More good news is I found my conte, the bad news is that I've misplaced my acrylic paints. That's what happens when I clean my room, and think I've put something in a really 'obvious' place. Pfft.

Since notes are unavailable for the moment, I thought I'd post a general journal asking for some advice.
My question to all you paint pros out there is this: what oil colors are 'absolutely necessary' for a beginner? I already have a few (listed below, they're the Winsor & Newton ones) and I'm wondering what colors I should add to those. Keep in mind that I'm a student (= no money) and can't afford to buy too many, but will try to add to my collection as much as possible.
I already have two whites (don't really know why...) a Soft Mixing White and Zinc White, I have Cadmium Red Hue, Phthalo Blue, Burnt Umber and a Cadmium Yellow Pale Hue. Won't lie, I don't really know the significance of the hues and whatnot, but as long as they work I'm happy.
Any advice is much appreciated!

Ignore this if you hate useless, woe-is-me, no-one-loves-me journals that do nothing but whine.
I'm succumbing to temptation for the next 5 minutes.

Let me reflect on my Chem midterm for a sentence or 3. I studied my pants off for that damn test. Did it help? Pfft. We didn't even have enough time to finish the exam. I could see 70% of the other people in the lecture hall scrambling to fill in as much as possible. Now I have to lock down the 3.7s and 4.0s in my other classes to make sure that my GPA stays at an acceptable level. Damn.

I just got my final exam schedule. Let's talk about a party, shall we? Four exams in three days, right at the beginning of exam week. As if I don't need any time to study. My fifth one's at the butt end of the schedule, which isn't a big deal. The Big Four are, of course, the ones crammed together like sardines in a can. I hate people.

My parents are going to NYC during exam week. I get to play mom and nursemaid to two younger brothers, ferry them to and fro soccer practice, school, and gymnastics, all the while trying to study? I might as well fail out now.

And did I mention I hate people? A.K.A., The ones that string you around, make you ammend your schedule, expect you to be there at their every whim, and then ditch out at the last minute? Good on yah, I have no life, right? I can reschedule crap at will. Think again. Let me amend that to 'I hate boy'. Said boy can kiss my voluptuous black behind. I swear, he's got more drama going than most women.

My tune'll change after exams are done, I know it will. But for the moment, I had to give 'er with some of it. Everything and it's cousin is getting on my nerves, I feel like I could slash ass mighty well right now.

On that note, I go for my run. I'll treck past the fire station a time or two, maybe I'll see some deliciousness in a rubber boots.

True, my room looks like Tornado, Earthquake and a Torrential Downpour had a hell of a party and didn't bother to clean up... heck, some might even go so far as to call it a mess. I prefer 'organized chaos'.
Sure, Mother says it's probably been swallowed up somewhere, but I know it's not where it should be. Nor where it could be. It's not even in the places that it shouldn't be.
I was all set to draw before I commit myself to two more midterms and another set of annoying English essays, but looks like this poor child will get naught done.
The pencils can bite me, I'm not getting tricked into using them again, I learned my lesson last time.

I have to admit, I'm a little bit worried that I'm going to come home one of these days and find my whole gallery has been tossed into my scrap bin because they're in the wrong categories, or because someone thinks they're not good enough to be in my main gallery. I moved some pieces to scraps today because they were WIPs (apparently those are targeted a lot), and I guess I'll have to go through each piece individually and recategorize them. I'm not really happy about that, that system is so damn confusing to begin with, and I don't really feel like going through that process for 25+ pieces. Too bad there isn't a mass way to edit deviations, that would make it a lot easier.
Have any of you received those fun notes yet?
I hope I never see one in my inbox!
