December 16th(Wednesday), to be exact ;D

So if any of you in the Maryland/D.C./Virginia would like to come, you are more than welcome! My graduation is going to be at the Building Museum in D.C (across the street from Judiciary Square metro stop). It's free to get in. Portfolio show is at 2pm (come visit me and my awesome booth), and the walk is at 5:30. There is plenty of room, so you can see the walk even without a ticket/invitation.

If none of you lovely peoples can make it, that's okay too ;D I'm just throwing the invite out there.

In other news, this quarter at school is almost over. I have two more finals, due next Monday and Tuesday. Wish me luck!

Next quarter(my last one, I graduate in December), is gonna be awesome. Only 2 classes...Final Portfolio, and my last gen-ed(film studies). And I won't be working at my tutoring job! woo! YAY free time! I'll be able to prepare for the portfolio show in December, and I'll also be contributing more of my time to my OTHER job at Forever Interactive (foreverinteractive.com)

I also have another painting I did the other day that I really liked, I am just waiting on permission to post it from a certain photographer, because the painting is inspired by one of their awesome photos

HAHA I thought I would have more free time to myself this quarter, but I really don't. I have some big projects for school in the works. But currently I am suffering from severe senioritis (when you're a senior, sometimes you develop apathy towards school, haha...year-round school for 3 years will do that to you).

I am building my personal gallery website this quarter!! Hopefully that will be complete and up and running by the end of September.

Work at Forever Interactive has been going well lately. I am finishing up the design for a boss character called the Shadow Snake, but that name might change to Shadow Wyrm because I gave him like, 5 pairs of limbs, haha. <___<
My team has been pumping out some great artwork too. FI is in full-throttle production of our first game, Visions of Zosimos. There isn't much going on in the VoZ public forums yet, but feel free to join! [link]

We plan to have Visions of Zosimos ready for release to the general public in the first quarter of 2011. There should be a website up for the game within a few weeks, we're building it right now. Once that's complete, I'll announce it so you guys can check it out

I work for Forever Interactive (an indie video game developer), and we need more 2D artists right now pretty badly. We need artists that have pretty strong illustration skills (for our spell cards and such), and maybe one or two artists that have strong environment painting skills.

Now, this is not a paying job (no one in the company is paid yet, until we get some investors later this year), HOWEVER, this is some great real-world experience, and a GREAT networking opportunity. ALSO, any work you do for Forever Interactive you are allowed to put into your portfolio. It does not have to be kept secret or anything. But obviously you cannot sell prints of it or anything like that.
Even though this is not a paying job, as a member of the company you are eligible to earn a percentage of royalties once the game is launched and (hopefully) starts to make money. You must work a minimum of 60 days to become eligible.

There are company meetings every Sunday evening 8pm central, over the internet. There are usually weekly deadlines (for example, I try to have 2 Encounter Tiles done ever week). The project we are currently working on is called Visions of Zosimos, and is a strategic battle card/board game for the web. It's gonna be really cool

This company is NOT a joke. They are organized, hard-working, and nice people. Forever Interactive has big potential...investors are already keeping an eye on us.

New quarter at school starts January 12th. My 10th quarter...and I'm supposed to finish in September, whooo!!

I am taking Pre Production with Buffalo, Background Design and Layout with Hernandez, Senior 1 with O'Sullivan, and Independent Study (with Griffin). Lots of work @___@

Also......I will have an internship VERY soon!!! Very exciting I just got to handle some paperwork and stuff, then I'll be in. The internship is with a budding video game developer called Forever Interactive. It's perfect because I can do all the work from my apartment, I don't have to go in anywhere.

Anyways, the winter break was great. I totally took advantage of it and just relaxed, and had a good time. Good food, good company. I really needed this break. Now I am all charged up enough to handle school again hooray!

In other news, my ipod passed away on monday morning (9-22-08). I've had him for over 2.5 years now. He just suddenly stopped working on the way to the train monday morning...He was a good old ipod. 2nd generation, black and white screen, 5000 song capacity.

Orphan Works: No Myth

We’ve seen “Six Misconceptions About Orphan Works” circulating on the Internet. It’s a well-reasoned piece, but has one problem. The author cites current copyright law to “debunk” concerns about an amendment that would change the law she cites.

How would the proposed amendment change the law? We’ll get to that and other questions in a minute. But first, let’s answer the broader charge that news of an Orphan Works bill is just “an internet myth.”

Q: There is no Orphan Works bill before Congress – one was introduced in 2006, but it was never voted on.
A: Correct. The last bill died in Congress because of intense opposition from illustrators, photographers, fine artists, and textile designers. The Illustrators' Partnership testified against it in both the House and Senate. [link]

Q: So if the bill is dead, why warn everybody about it now?
A: Because a new bill is due out momentarily. According to Andrew Noyes of the National Journal:

“Legislation aimed at reworking a portion of U.S. copyright law dealing with ‘orphan works’... will likely be a priority for the panel headed by House Judiciary Courts, the Internet and Intellectual Property Subcommittee Chairman Howard Berman, D-Calif., in the spring...

“American Library Association copyright specialist Carrie Russell said her members are ‘excited about having orphan works legislation’ move this session,’” adding: “the House effort is ‘so close to being a done deal that we're on the edge of our seats.’" -Intellectual Property -Progress Seen on Developing 'Orphan Works' Legislation, by Andrew Noyes © National Journal Group, Inc. 02-21-2008

Q: But if there isn’t a new bill yet, how can we know what’s going to be in it?
A: Our information indicates the new bill will be basically the same as the old one. According to the Copyright Clearance Center:
“Subcommittee chairman Howard Berman made it quite clear that he intends to introduce new orphan works legislation shortly... It is likely the new bill will look very similar to The Orphan Works Act of 2006.”[link]

Q: But if it’s due out shortly, why not wait until it’s been introduced before we oppose it?
A: To quote from the Copyright Clearance Center:
“Since this is an election year, and re-election campaigns will be in full swing by late summer, new orphan works legislation will probably be fast-tracked to reach the floor of the House by mid-May”. [link]
Since that would give us only a month to notify artists, we decided to start now.

Q: Do we have any direct corroboration for these press reports?
A: Since the last bill died, we’ve met with:

- Chairman Berman
- Attorneys from the Copyright Office
- Representatives of the House and Senate Subcommittees
- A lobbyist for Getty and Corbis. (Getty and Corbis oppose the bill, but are negotiating for favorable concessions.)

Q: Where did we get the idea that the Copyright Office wants to impose for-profit registries?
A: That proposal has been there from the beginning. Two examples (with emphasis added), the first from page 106 of the Copyright Office’s 2006 Orphan Works Report:

“[W]e believe that registries are critically important, if not indispensable, to addressing the orphan works problem...It is our view that such registries are better developed in the private sector..." [link]

And on January 29 2007, twenty visual arts groups met in Washington D.C. with attorneys from the Copyright Office. The attorneys stated that the Copyright Office would not create these “indispensable” registries because it would be “too expensive.” So I asked the Associate Register for Policy & International Affairs:

Holland: If a user can’t find a registered work at the Copyright Office, hasn’t the Copyright Office facilitated the creation of an orphaned work?
Carson: Copyright owners will have to register their images with private registries.
Holland: But what if I exercise my exclusive right of copyright and choose not to register?
Carson: If you want to go ahead and create an orphan work, be my guest!

I also like my Special Topic class, which happens to be about sequential art(comics). We focus on the history of the comic industry and what's happening with the industry today. We also focus on how to successfully tell a story using comics. So, lots of fun projects. I'll get to make my own mini-comic for the final project later.

And then there is psychology class, and typography :/ I already greatly dislike psycho class, because it's in the evening on Monday, and the teacher irritates me. Typography actually seems like it might be fun....I have it on Saturdays, but the teacher is really nice and she knows what she's talking about.

So we'll see how this goes!

so I figure I'll call it my Birthday/Christmas Wishlist. THIS TIME STOLEN FROM who had stolen it from someone else...


Step 1.

Make a post in your dA journal. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

If you wish for real-life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

Step 2.

Surf around your friends list (or friends friends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

1. We have two TV's in my apartment living room. My roomates will leave theirs on, and it's just a really bright blue screen. That bugs the crap out of me for some reason o.o

2. I am a bit superstitious...I knock on wood, throw spilled salt over my left shoulder...

3. My right wrist hurt a lot senior year from doing art...but now I am in college and I do more art than ever before, but my wrist hasn't hurt at all.

4. I have lost the appetite for microwave meals. which sucks, because i can't cook.

5. I used to want to be a fighter pilot in the Air Force. Thank gawd I changed my mind...for I am not athletic at all, and kind of lazy. the military wouldn't have been a good place for me.

6. I usually wear my favorite pair of jeans at least 5 or 6 times before getting around to doing laundry.

"Humbleness goes a long way and I hear how overly critical you can be in classes and you may have talent but frankly most of your work is generic in the sense that it has all been done before plus don't dwell so much in the morbid. Just some friendly criticism not bein mean just honest."

Personally, I do take offense to this, for many reasons. I'm more annoyed then mad though.

1) I do try my best to be humble.
2) I can be very critical of other people's artwork in my classes. If I see there is room for improvement, I will make suggestions. This is what in-class critiques are for. The class is supposed to help their classmates improve. If you're an artist that can't take criticism, good luck with life.
3) So you "hear" that I can be overly critical? Who is talking about me behind my back like that? It sounds so negative.
3) My work is generic? I do take offense to that...almost any artist would I think. Maybe a couple of my jrock fanart is generic, but otherwise....personally, I don't think my work is so generic, but that's just me.
4) Don't dwell so much on the morbid? Do I? o.o? I do enjoy drawing slightly macabre stuff every once in a while, but I wouldn't consider it "dwelling" persay.

I wanted to make a journal about this because I would like to know what my friends and watchers think. If people generally agree that I am not humble, then I will work on that. If people generally agree that my work is generic, I will work on that. Anything else I should know about?

But what they’re NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are “seeking artists”, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? …none?

More than likely, you don’t know any. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be posting on craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the “opportunity” to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him “a few bucks” for “materials”. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?

If you answered “yes” to ANY of the above, you’re obviously insane. If you answered “no”, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me… why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;

1. It is not a “great opportunity” for an artist to have his work seen on your car/’zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a “great opportunity” for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a “student” or “beginner” in an attempt to get work for free. It’s ignorant and insulting. They may be “students”, but that does not mean they don’t deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a “student” once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether it’s one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their “portfolio”. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. It’s not compensation. It’s their right, and it’s a given.

4. Stop thinking that you’re giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someone who lives in the real world, and as such, will pay them. There are far more jobs needing these skills than there are people who possess these skills.

5. Students DO need “experience”. But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the “experience” they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmother’s house when they were seventeen?

If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. The only experience they will get doing free work for you is a lesson learned in what kinds of scrubs they should not lower themselves to deal with.

6. (This one is FOR the artists out there, please pay attention.) Some will ask you to “submit work for consideration”. They may even be posing as some sort of “contest”. These are almost always scams. They will take the work submitted by many artists seeking to win the “contest”, or be “chosen” for the gig, and find what they like most. They will then usually have someone who works for them, or someone who works incredibly cheap because they have no originality or talent of their own, reproduce that same work, or even just make slight modifications to it, and claim it as their own. 1. I've been drawing all my life, ever since I could hold a crayon. I would sit still for hours and color and draw, which is strange for a little kid.

2. I mostly drew creatures like dragons and pegasi until the 8th and 9th grade, where I began to exclusively concentrate on drawing people.

3. I've been working on drawing realistic people for almost a year and a half now.

4. I get art block for 1-3 weeks, about twice a year.

5. I was a self-taught artist until the second semester of 11th grade, where I had my first art class (first half of the year 2005)

6. Now I am an art student at the Art Institute of Washington, majoring in Video Game Art and Design.

7. I love drawing the figure, especially the male torso (always looks so effeminate tho, haha)

8. I hate charcoal and pastels...too messy!!! they always smear and crap like that. Oh well. I like graphite better.

9. I hold my pencil in a very abnormal way.

Now my next project for another class that should be up by late wednesday or thursday is a self-portrait @___@ wewt...and I have an english paper due friday TT________TT oh noes...
I'll be fine...it'll be alright...
lol see I would rather be in math than english because I hate being forced to write stuff. I think some of the problem is I'd rather be putting all my concentration into my artwork *which i'm doing anyway haha*. SO by the end of Friday will be winter break!!! I will be on break until January 7th but that doesn't mean I won't be stopping by here, or maybe still posting up stuff....never know.

ANYWAYS it's now 6:21am and I am done ranting ^^ time to go to school and present my final portfolio for design class. wish me luck!

I beat Shadow of the Colossus!!! Gawd that game is awesome. If you have a PS2 you need to pick it up...it's only $20. I beat Ico a while ago. That game was also really cool.

So tonight from 6-8ish I went to my first figure drawing "class." anyone can come really, students and ppl like illustrators. and it's free for students now yay! Anyways so I went, and this was my first time drawing a nude person from life. So...actually, I had less of a problem than i thought i would. Once I got into it, I had a lot of fun sketching the model. His name is Michael, and he is probably in his forties or so. Slender physique, I got a lot of good sketches. If anyone wants me to post them up to use for reference or whatever, let me know, and I'll scan some and post them up.
I also went on a field trip earlier today. My drawing class went to the Botanic Gardens so we could sketch the different textures and stuff. Really neat place, has fountains and lots of really neat plants. I have some pics, so again, if anyone would like to see them let me know.

my family came to visit me ^^ we went out to lunch and had a good time ^^ My parents got me the printer/scanner I've been wanting!!! no more junky digital pics of my small works now i can scan them.

yesterday, after opening a few birthday cards, I decided I had enough money to get me a PS2! haha yay. My family used to have one, but my dad sold it before Christmas time last year. So I want one again so I bought one. I also bought Shadow of the Colossus..it's by the same people who made Ico, which is an awesome spectacular game. BUT i didn't buy a memory card because i thought i already had one, but when i got home, i discovered I only have PS1 memory cards -_____- oh crap. So today i'm gonna try to buy a PS2 memory card *crosses fingers*
and I wanted to buy Katamari 1 and 2, but they weren't in the store TT____TT I'll have to find them on ebay or amazon or something. I've played Katamari 1, but i want to buy it for myself XD

HOLY CRAP i'm surprised i didn't wet myself! As DEG's crew was setting up, Die could barely be seen backstage, smoking, and Kyo's blonde head could barely be seen. They opened the concert with GDS. Toshiya's hair was unfortunately quite ugly in my opinion...brown with blonde highlights, and in a surfer-dude kinda style or something. Die's hair was black on one side, red on the other. Kaoru's hair still sorta longish, and the normal color. Kyo was scary and SO AWESOME. He started out wearing a black "Bullets and Octane" shirt (so were Kaoru and Die. Apparently DEG and "Bullets and Octance" are very good friends), but by the third song Kyo had lost his shirt. of course he scraped his nails across himself, making himself bleed and stuff...also made his mouth bleed, it was all over his face, then he looked at the crowd with a really psycho look on his face, it was aswesome.
OMFG. I (and a bunch of other fans) stood in line to meet DEG after they played! Only two members were at the tent, but hey!!! SHINYA AND KAORU. I shook their hands. They were so gorgeous, as always! To Shinya I said "Daisuki, yoroshiku.." that's all i could think of because my brain was having technical difficulties by that time. Shinya chuckled slightly. I forget what I said to Kaoru, but he smiled. I gave Kaoru a small tube containing prints of my fanart of DEG. A lot of people were giving them all sorts of little gifts, including t-shirts, plushies, arm bands, and i saw a scorpion keychain for Kyo. Wow. I only got like 7 seconds to see them up close, but ZOMG! ujhfiuhe89yh vdnfioewht9idf.....jkHuwhed blaaaaaaaaah @____@

anyways...looking forward to going to college. I move into the apartment(cause this school doesn't have dorms, they have "college sponsored" apartments) at the end of September, and classes start October 2nd(really late because my school has trimesters instead of semesters). So I will get to live on my own yay! hopefully I won't get any evil/annoying roomates. there are four ppl(same gender) per aparment, with two bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 dressers, 2 desks, a living room with couch and coffee table, a table with four chairs, and a fully functional kitchen. ....hopefully there will be a culinary student in my apartment cause i don't really cook >.>....i'll be living off of peanut butter toast and ramen, lmao.
