Headscarfs enrage. A simple piece of textile. A hundred years ago this would have been different still. A muslim woman wouldn't have stood out much here(in Austria) or caused any kind of commotion, because of wearing a headscarf, but rather for walking in wide pants, that were common in turkey back then, on the mainstreet of Linz.

Because all Austrian woman wore headscarfs back then, the extremely fashionable ones a hat, but no woman wore pants. 1911 there happened such a "pantscandal" in Linz, as one can read in a report of back then's Linz Daily News: A lady appeared in a pant-skirt from black plush on the Franz-Josef-Plaza, today's main plaza, and took a walk along the road. Soon there appeared curious people and some of the especially enraged ones tore apart her coat and pant-skirt. In the end she had to escape to a delicatesse-store. Outside came to be a huge crowd of people, the tramway traffic got delayed and only under the protection of the police the lady was able to get away.

While pants don't manage to enrage anybody anymore, the headscarf became the subject of a heavy controversy: as symbol of islamic fundamentalism and the oppression and inferiority of the woman: Even though headscarfs and the general covering of the head have high symbolic value and a long history, both in european-christian and in outside of europe tradition. The old-german "Wiba", in new-german "Weib"( = Woman) in the end means nothing more then "the veiled one". Headscarfs were an important part of a womans fashionable and traditional wardrobe until the 20th century. Even today one can almost not imagine a depiction of mother Mary without a veil. While in the european civilizations the headscarf lost most of its symbolical sense, the islamic veil became subject of a heavy controversy. The sides of supporters and enemies overlay and cross: in the opposition leftist visionaries of woman-emanzipation unite with rightwing keepers of occidental values. The anti-clericals fight the veil and mean the cross, the nationalists fight the veils and mean the foreigners.

Headscarfs are as a part of the wardrobe social, political, cultural and national symbols, which have to be respected as long as they don't go against the basics of freedom and personal liberty or get into conflict with any other human rights and are abused for goals of oppression of women, the "clash of cultures" or anti-peace.

In my opinion it is necessary to be more aware of such things, after all "symbols" stand for "something", have a meaning.
Skulls and bones signifying "death" belong on pirate-flags or poisonous chemicals, not on baby clothing, covering pregnant bellies or on the underwear of youngsters (what are they trying to say? that their "life-giving organs" are already dead? do they ask for that or what?).
Anyway I think, that if you would translate this symbols directly to letters (another type of symbols), not so many people would want to run around covered in sentences like "I want to die", "I love death", "killing is just ok!" or similar (or what else would you say a skull with hearts stands for?), at least they would not want theit little kids to wear such stuff.
Also please open your eyes to things like that there is a "secret" organisation with the very name of "skulls and bones" of which many famous and "successfull" people are members and about which for example George Bush (who is in it by himself) has said, that it is "so secret" that he "cannot say anything about it"....
Well, what I mean is that: just look around and see whos symbols you use.
Even if you do not believe that a little sign somewhere on your shoe or shirt has any kind of power by itself, acknowledge please, that we get influenced, by what we see everyday, we get used to what we see too often, we change our perception and eventually become indifferent.
We all have to choose for ourselves, what we want to be associated with, what we identify with, etc.

Out of thoughts like this ~KuSo-e and me started a project that offers an alternative to such negative symbolism by the means of creating a countersymbol that stands for life and is based on ancient life symbols (at least as ancient as that skull).

The grandfather would remain calm, just ask "Can he care for her?", the greatgrandmother would say "oh my god, is he a turk??! no??? then some other foreigner???!!", the grandmother would defend political correctness (but mostly to go against her husband's mother), the kids would try to get attention by making noise or being annoying in some way, but her brother, her oldest brother to be precise, he would not stay so cool, neighter would he cheer and congratulate, he would only repeat how crazy she (his sister, his little sister, his ONLY sister) was and illustrate that with the same uncreative and untrue arguments (that he used to fight every war against her shitty way of life before).....

"You are a prophet!" she said to her mother, later, when all was over or just about to start.

But to be true, who of them (she, her mother, her youngest brother) had not been a prophet?

"...We will marry sooner now, after all!" said the TV and made her and her mother exchange meaningfull looks, expecting inspiration from some old austrian "Heimatfilm"...but just that moment the TV went off, mierda!

"I have something to tell: I will marry next year!"

She does not know how to lose a brother.
