Califur is a Furry Convention this upcoming weekend in Irvine, California!

After about 6 years, my old set of 24 Prismacolor markers are about to bite the dust, so naturally, I am in the market for a new set. What do you guys recommend as far as brand and amount? What sets have you had that you love, and which ones didn't work out for you?

Right now I am looking at a 72 set of Prismacolors for $131.99 on Dickblick. I was always very happy with the Prismacolor's performance, but then again, I've never really had the opportunity to try anything else! The only thing is that I need them before/for Califur for commissions and such.

I have just been so swamped with school and stressed out about my artistic responsibilities (art that I owe people, personal artwork that I am itching to do, artwork to sell, etc.) lately. I get very cranky if I go without creating artwork, and lately there has just been absolutely no time for it.

On top of that, I feel so guilty every time I spend time on the computer - I should be doing artwork! I'd love to answer each and every one of your comments, and thank you for each and every favorite - but when it comes down to it, I don't even have time to do artwork anymore. I am le sad.

So just know that if I take a little break from everything interwebs related - I am just fine and it is not a personal thing. I love you all and I wish you the best!

As a biology student with an intense love, appreciation, and sense of wonder for all forms of life, whether it be uni or multicellular, I find it heartbreaking that those involved either do not recognize or choose to ignore the severity of their actions. This isn't just about wolves anymore. This is about the blatant disrespect for all forms of life, non-human or not. We cannot hope to sustain ourselves while depleting all that keeps us alive.

At times like these I wonder if we as a species are we so successful that we will ultimately fail at our own game? I do not wish or choose to believe this. We can make a change and a difference.

I am calling for you to do whatever you can, no matter how small or large of a change you can make, to help our environment and all living things. Recycle, plant a tree, volunteer at your local wildlife or nature group, or write a letter to congress calling for the strengthening of the Endangered Species Act are just some of the things you can do to help. Do it for all of the animals, plants, fungi, protists, and bacteria, the good, the bad, the beautiful, and the "ugly". For the prokaryotes and eukaryotes alike. For our future, and our children's futures.

Our biodiversity is the most precious thing we have. Pass this message on, in any way that you can.

1. I have freckles. All over. XD
2. When I get stressed out or nervous about something, I tend to pick at my skin and face. I have even given myself a small bald spot on my scalp (oops!)
3. When drawing expressions, I often make the expression I am trying to draw while I draw it for absolutely no reason at all.
4. When I first started drawing as a child, I was in love with dinosaurs. They were about the only thing I would ever draw.
5. I've never really enjoyed listening to music just to listen to music. (This of course, excludes actually GOING to a concert to PARTICIPATE in the music) I've only ever put music on as a way of providing "background" noise while doing something else. I don't really understand the need for things like MP3 players or Ipods, etc.
6. I'm short (5'2") but I am taller than my mom! (5'0)
7. I have always enjoyed simulating animal behavior, whether it be audibly (barks, howls, meows, roars, etc.), physically (swimming like a seal/dolphin, stalking/pouncing like a cat, romping around like a dog), or mentally (pack mentality, prey/predator mentality, etc.) ever since I was a child and I still find it quite fun.
8. I make fursuits!
9. I have green eyes.
10. I like to smile and laugh a lot.

1. I've broken my left arm, both shins, and my skull - all in seperate, unrelated accidents (soccer, trampoline, and falling off of a wall while watching a police chase on the freeway LOL)

3. My favorite foods include PIZZA (olives+canadian bacon PLZ), PASTA, and many fruits and veggies. YUM.
4. I can not eat celery unless it has been cooked so thoroughly that I can not taste it. If I taste it I will gag instantly.
5. Touching surfaces like corduroy or certain types of velvet is like nails on a chalkboard for me. It is TORTURE. T_T
6. I have never owned a dog BUT I WANT ONE SO BAD (after college, of course

7. I love snakes but have never owned one. (I was born in the year of the snake)
8. I am not religious but I do believe in prayer and meditation because I believe it is a form of positive human energy that can bring fourth change, even if through nothing else but placebo.

9. I am currently going for my associates of science degree in biology, after which I will be persuing further education in the science/art of scientific illustration. Yay!
10. I am completely self taught as an artist and have never taken any art classes.

In other news, Mike and I got home safely from FC some time ago, but shortly after returning home I came down with an awful bacterial infection in my throat and nasal cavity. I've since seen the doctor and gotten some antibiotics, so I should back to perfect health soon.

FC was a blast! As it was my first con, I was a little nervous, but as soon as I started meeting people I found out how nice and friendly the environment was and felt right at home. I fursuited a bit and even got to participate in the parade and masquerade (you can see my performance here: [link] ) but I also got to meet many artists and indulge in buying some artwork thanks to my commissioners.

I definitely had so much fun that I will be returning next year, and it looks like I will definitely be attending other conventions as well. Califur, I've got my eye on you! ;D

But annnyways, I got to go on an awesome field excursion with my biology lab class to a small river up by the sequoias. We got to see and collect many species of arthropods that we otherwise would have only even heard about. The high-point of the adventure was when my group discovered that leeches (Yes, LEECHES!!) were present in the ecosystem, something our teacher hadn't expected! So for the rest of the lab we were careful to watch our bare legs for little hitchhikers as we waded through knee-deep water. Luckily, there were no victims!

For the rest of the day I had to deal with a business deal gone bad as I had lent some money to a friend of my boyfriend and I so that he (the friend) could put a deposit down for a sound system for Scarefest (Which was only a week away at that point!). The deposit was non-refundable and now the friend has canceled the contract and forfeited the deposit because they found a family friend who will provide the sound for cheap/free. Now we're thinking that this friend might not give us our money back, even though he was the one who made the deal and then backed out of it. So we'll have to wait to see what happens during the day of the show. We're expecting at least 850 people to show up (We've been advertising like CRAZY!) and we only need 80 to show up to be paid back. I hope it all works out!

In other news, I've decided to attend FURTHER CONFUSION 2008 and we've already reserved rooms in the overflow hotel! This will be my first convention and I am so excited! If anyone has any first-timer tips for me, please share them, as I need all of the help I can get (Especially with registering with the state as a vendor for taxes and stuff, I'm so confused!). To supply the funds to get us there (My boyfriend has decided to attend with me) I will be offering commissions, so if you've been wanting some of my artwork, here's your chance! I will have formal prices arranged tomorrow (It's a little late to start now, 7am Statistics class in the morning, yanno?) but I'd still like to know if there is any interest. Please either reply here or send me a note if you are interested and we can work out a price together. I am very flexible with payment and I am very willing to work with you to get everything exactly right. If you know anyone that might be interested and could pass the word onto them I would really appreciate it as well!

I am so honored and thankful, abiet a little embarassed, since the piece itself was a little rushed for the contest and I was planning to retouch it a little. No more waiting for other students to get their act together, no more kids that wish they weren't there, no more irresponsibility, basically - no more high school! Yess! I start every day a 7:00am and end latest at noon. This means so much more time for art. Plus, I've decided to wait on getting a part time job and try out selling artwork. I've never been happier in my whole life!

I'd like to thank you all for the overwhelming response to my artwork. I really appreciate all of the kind compliments you have given me, as well as all those who have decided to watch and favorite my artwork. I'm trying my best to keep up and respond to everyone, but I was wondering if it would make sense to preserve that time for doing artwork itself? Don't get me wrong, I love replying to everyone - and I still will try to, but I don't know if I can thank each and every one of you who favorites my work and watches me. Just know that I am extremely appreciative and I will still check your galleries and comment if I can. You all have really made this a great experience so far!

In other news, my parents just turned vegetarian!!! This is so unexpected because they've always loved a big juicy steak. They're hoping to change to a better diet and lifestyle, and then quit their cigarette smoking habit - amazing! It looks like I will finally see the day my parents don't smoke. I am so happy because I have hope that my parents will be around to be Grandma and Grandpa to my children. Yay!

Oh! Speaking of which, I need to run down to the store and get them some bananas and soy milk so I'll catch you all later.

I am currently 17 years old, soon to start college as a Biology major, and living in the beautiful state of California. I have been drawing ever since I could hold a crayon but became serious about illustration at about 12 years of age. I have always been fascinated by animals and the natural world and thus it is no surprise that my favorite subject matter is nature, but I have also been enamored by fantasy as far back as I can remember. My artwork is a mixture of these two loves, not always wholly wildlife or fantasy in nature.

I have joined Deviantart to show my artwork to the world and gain the friendship of other artists who share the same passion for were/fantasy creatures.
