So yeah I'm kind of floating on cloud 9 after seeing one of my cards for Marvel 70th anniversary card set being featured in the promo from Rittenhouse Archives. I am trying really hard to pick up my game. I'm in a competition with myself to get better. Although I am having a ball doing these sketch cards expect some bigger pieces from me soon. I really have to ramp up and get sequential art done and some bigger pieces.

---

After about 20 years of pleading and begging (ok maybe 6 months) I finally got to post artwork. The first time I saw her art I was pretty floored. Her approach is to do work she is inspired to do and thus comes across raw. Check her stuff out and add her, she's a pretty cool person

---

It's odd to say but I am pretty proud of a lot of my artist friends. I've gotten to see a few push the limits on what they were used to to grow and develop more as artists. My favorite thing to see is growth in artists. It breaks my heart when someone gets disenchanted after a system accepts them and then spits them out. It's a heavy burden on a person, like being kicked in the teeth and being told they're worthless.

---

If 4 weeks go by and no post from me I probably had a heart attack. I was kind of amazed that my heart rate was so high today. From two different machines. One was actually at a museum's science wing and kind of was embarrassing (it had an audible heart beat and when I touched it it sounded like a jet engine..125 bpm and I felt calm).

What's odd is I am not really overweight and I am almost always in a great mood. Might have been that amp

Nothing I am too concerned about at this point but I wish I could afford a doctor for regular visits. I'd like to get it checked on. It's greedy of me but I hope the health care reform bill passes. I need it.

---

Take care!

-Geo

Want an official piece by me? It's hard to get a hold of a proof from me as either they are spoken for, out of price ranges for most or I simply am not selling. So what can you do if you'd like something by me on an official stock like "Spider-Man Archives" then check this link out: [link] Get a card at a great deal. I was happy to see the 300 cover recreation put up. These cards are not easy to come by either since I did 75 out of a possible 8500+ available.

----

The fight has begun. At the drawing table yesterday I looked down at my arm only to see a flea. Now there WAS a flea problem before and I took care of it. That was inside. Now it's very apparent the bugs are coming from outside. The house next door was condemned for a flea infestation. Borax will be an important ally (yeah I'm going all natural).

A few hours after this discovery I heard a tapping on the bulb above my head. I thought it was a lady bug or Box Elder bug (they are a slight problem that dissipate over time). So out of instinct I prepare to grab it and toss it on the ye ole fly trap. Well, it was neither. It was one of the biggest wasps I've ever seen. I've been stung once when I was around 20. It hurt like my foot was tossed into a flame to cook. So I have an aversion to these things. Needless to say it's still here but hiding.

My thing is both these bugs(along with ticks) present no benefit to the ecology, environment and so on. Why do they still exist? Fleas jump off of dead animals very quickly , wasps kill things and nothing eats them because of the sting and ticks just suck blood. You may say birds need ticks and fleas to eat but they don't. It's crazy.

----

I'm getting ready to start filming some drawing again so be on the look out for them

---

Take care

-Geo

I'm finally doing a set based on a tv show or film. Still no word on Star Wars though.

---

Today I was called pretentious for warning somebody on a possible copyright infringement..oh and I was called rude as well. I find it funny that it was 20 year olds calling me this on deviantart. No blatant "you stole this" just a "you know this is copyrighted right?". Of course the excuses came out left and right. I don't attack people on here (course I'm not 20) and I'd like to think if problems can be avoided then maybe it's a nice thing to step in and say something. Things like this are a bit annoying. Try being nice and get dirt kicked in your face...fun.

---

Marvel 70th has pulled my best drawing of The Thing I've ever done (I always had problems with seperation of the rocks from the body lines).
I'm happy. Life is good albeit a little on the poor monetary side and I can't believe the new artists I keep coming across. Some people I knew before I even entered into professional illustration and some I hope to continue to know after they hit it big. I've never tried to ride anyone's coat tails and just enjoy watching them flourish. My favorite thing is to watch growth in an artist which in turn inspires growth in me.

is someone who is starting to get in on the professional side of things and enjoys just drawing. I have a feeling if she never made it big she'd be ok because it's the action of creating that she enjoys. Watch her as her art grows.

I've been watching her since she got on DA. I forgot how we came to know one another. Her art is very fluid and naturalistic reminding me of many european animators and people such as Skottie Young. What got me was this past week she posted a journal on how she started drawing in 2005. This was after her transplant to USA from Honduras. If that doesn't impress you check out her art. She worries about art school but really, I don't think she needs it to get work. Just guidance to the right doors she needs to open. She has a gift of super growth and knowing what she wants out of a picture. A new inspiration for me for sure.

----

I guess the cats out of the bag. I'm working on the Marvel 70th anniversary card set from Rittenhouse. It'll be huge and I am working very hard to make sure I outshine myself again. I have a bigger deadline this time so that made me extremely happy. On my last two sets there were cards I gave my all and a few that I did to hurry before deadline that I really wish I didn't do. What artist doesn't say that though?

The problem I am having now is sleep. I am not sleepy when I go to sleep and I consider doing more work but at the same time I know I need sleep. Should I stay awake? I constantly ask myself. I think tonight I will to near exhaustion.

----

I need a premium membership again I think. Argh.

-----

Oh BTW does anyone know why DA randomly deletes people off watch lists? This has happened to me 3 times and I know a couple other people have had it happen (after I noticed them re-adding me and not knowing what happened)

Take care all,

-Geo

Well the Spider-Man Archives set is finally out and I must say it's looking good. It's funny though, at the time I thought "wow this is way better then the X-men cards, my best yet!" but now I look at what I can do and what I did and think "I really wish I could do some rework on some of these cards". That's just the nature of the beast. Always striving to do better. The set I am currently working on will be my best ever I am also supposed to be working on a couple monsterwax card sets (can't wait!). The dream gig of doing mechs and a cartoon I liked as a kid, Voltron, doesn't seem to be bearing any fruit for me though

What's the next year have? A sketchbook (finally right?) and a comic, possibly two. I'll be trying to hit more conventions as an artist but am looking to hit a couple to get reviews and such. I was turned down for a table at C2E2 because I filed a wee bit too late. Other artists have mentioned the table price so I am kind of glad I did get the reject slip. Considering the New York Comicon.

Now for something that bugs me to no end. Etiquette. I'm not a big fan of crits anymore as I tend to notice more what I do wrong then others. What I don't notice is what I do right and I learned that after getting positive remarks and mentions about my work and what was liked. This works for me and I'm not saying it's the set in stone way everyone should follow. I do ask for crits when I hit problems I can't figure out. Key word ASK. If you come here to point out some fault on my stuff you perceive to be wrong and that's ALL you do, don't post here. I didn't ask for anyone to point out negatives here. If it bugs you, don't look. I don't do it to others, those with an ounce of respect for other artists don't do it. If your asked, fine. I'm asked for crits now and then and I give them otherwise I keep my mouth shut unless I like something a lot. No ego speaking here, I'm not the cat's meow but what I am is annoyed.

Ok, with that out of the way. I have to say thanks again for all the positive comments and the favorites I've gotten. I appreciate them all and barely forget a one. I get so busy I can't reply to everyone as much as I used to but I do read every comment so don't think I don't.

Stay positive and true and things will always work for you Take care all!

-Geo

I barely had anything on hand. Cards I ordered were glossy fronts and backs making them extremely hard to work on. So I wasn't expecting much to happen. First day, however, I got a couple commissions in sketchbooks and a free pencil head shot in a big card (I was doing free penciled headshots in sketchbooks but only had the one bite). Not too bad I thought. Then off to the panel.

The panel went really well, I was a bit nervous at first but I was glad to see one of the artists chad cicconi show up. Very personable fellow though I found out he was pretty nervous as well (couldn't tell from talking to him). Then , eventually Jamie Snell showed as well. After a while I eased into it and enjoyed the discussion.

After the panel I was hungry (woke at 6:30 am, panel was done at roughly 2 and I hadn't eaten yet). I had to get back to my table though as I had a sketchbook someone dropped off and needed to be there so he could get it back. As I waited I had a few more people ask me for commissions. Eventually the man came back and got his sketchbook but my head was down full bore drawing. 3 hours later I had a break and ran for it. According to my friend there was, at one point, a crowd gathering round my table. I wouldn't know, I barely ever looked up. My final piece of the day was an awesome Thor I did for a cool guy. I felt so exhausted after all was said and done.

Day 2 I browsed around and eventually went to my table but no one really came up. Sundays are the same no matter what con I guess I left 4 hours before close to get home.

What I learned:

The lighting is the worst, people walking around your table make the shadows jump everywhere. Had to keep crooking my neck.

The chairs will suck. Mine did. It was broke in the back so I had to sit on the tip.

It's real hard work when you get one thing after another and need to get them done in a timely manner while still having a quality product.

I love the conversations with people because I'm a fan too! Oh and thanks to his Tigra piece I found and talked to for a bit. Daryl Manley of [link] also stopped by as I was leaving.

------

After the next few commissions I'll be getting started on my comic. It's a superhero book and I'm committing to 4 issues for now. I'll shop it around but my intention was and will most likely be P.O.D. As well I am tossing the 21 hour comic into the mix at some point and considering continuing it as an online comic strip.

-Geo

CSS made by =BloodPromiser

Mid Oho Comic Con is a mere day away and I sit here in the early hours of the morning preparing for a long drive there.

This will be the first show ever that I have a table set up for artist alley. Granted it'll be pretty lame since I have nothing to promote and nothing to really show off BUT I will have the uniqueness of offering postcard art on super glossy, not fun to work with, custom postcards! YAY! It'll be ok though, I'll chalk it up to a learning experience.

The other fun to do thing is watch me on a panel about sketch cards on saturday at 1p.m. My first show and my first panel, sadly if it happens it won't be my first nervous breakdown

Once all is said and done I'll be getting back to work and prepping my comic book and sketch book.

As for more cons in the future. One here, one on twitter and one on a forum I frequent. Why do the contest when I am hurting for money and could be selling the prizes? Cause it's fun and as far as artwork and jobs involving art this has been a spectacular year for me.

I've gotten to work on two major comic book card sets (so far), got be involved in a new company that makes trading cards and I got to finally paint a mural (of sorts) on a wall for a complete stranger and got paid nicely for it (thank you craigslist). It doesn't even stop there. Tomorrow I'll be doing a 24 hour comic, I'll be attending Mid Ohio Con and have my first ever table there and I'll be pursuing comic book work.

What makes this great for me, personally, is knowing that you guys have checked out this page over 10,000 times in a little over a year. I see others who tout their experience and raise their noses in the air, to people who aren't known names, have less then half that. It just makes me extremely happy.

About the contest. Well soon I'll be posting a new sketch card. This card will be the prize. Here's what you need to do.

At 9 p.m. Eastern time on thursday post the answer to this question underneath the new sketch card (which will be of Batman). DO NOT post on the main page, it has to be posted under the card:

Before he became the Joker what alias had he gone by?

First one to answer, according to my messages clock, will win and will be contacted in the days following.

Good luck all and have fun!

-Geo

CSS made by =BloodPromiser

Seems we got no crap as far as incentives. Where others have fillers we have..none! All grade A art made with love and freedom from the artists on the set. The cost of the set is the average a known artist would sell a single sketch card for. Here not only do you get that sketch card but you get a set and chances at jam sets.

This is Nate's first venture out as a card maker and he took all the risks so that we, the artists and collectors, would reap the rewards. So go here [link] and get yourself a set. It'll be well worth it. Take the collectors proof and go even further with it and commission your favorite artist to do a Legends and Lore sketch card for you (don't be the only one at the conventions without one!). The sets are strictly limited and I know many are already sold so hurry if you can

-----

24 hour comics? Twitter? Yep, considering trying this out via tweetdeck and twitpics posting live as pages are done. May try a target day for next week as I am moving stuff to my new place and helping someone else move to their new place (oh my aching bones). Interested? Get a twitter account, find tweetdeck and get it and let's talk either there or here.

-----

Finishing the last of my sketch card commissions. Spider-Man set is done and sent in. I'll be gearing up for mid ohio so I'm switching over to full size mode with intermittent sketch card commissions here and there. I have a severely late star wars full size to redo and I'll be doing a few pieces for sale at the Mid Ohio Comicon (if I get a table). I'll also be doing con sketches there as well.

-----

After trying to assemble my sketch/art book I decided to revisit a character I did in 6th grade way back in 86. Just for fun. I'll be doing a comic for a few issues which will be available online in various formats. I'll let people know as soon as I have close to two issues done (I wouldn't want anyone to wait long between issues). It'll be rompin stomping superhero fun!

-----

Disney buys Marvel. I got to admit I was a bit upset about this. This is not like the pixar deal at all so don't believe the hype on that. Pixar was owned by Steve Jobs who happens to be the majority holder in Disney which means what he says goes. I'd like to believe disney will keep things as is but as far as their publishing history I wouldn't hold my breath. As far as other media the sky is the limit. I wouldn't mind seeing a pixar Marvel film if I didn't already know that pixar films are developed in house but the thought of new animated series is kind of cool. I liked what Lions Gate and Marvel films was doing so I hope that stays in tact until their contract is up. I had heard that the Thor movie might not get made now though. What it all comes down to is everything is speculation including my opinion (which I am basing on moves disney's made in the past). Even what Disney and Marvel tell you isn't what's going to happen in 6 months. Corporate Business is a very unpredictable and unforgiving monster.

-----

I've recently started reading "The Walking Dead" by Robert Kirkman. It's so freaking awesome. My only qualm is the price. The stories by themselves go by so quick. I can't wait until the tv series. If you haven't checked it out do so and grab "Invincible" while your at it. Stories written simply but draw you in like a good book.

-----

Alright kids, I'll check back with you all later. Take care and enjoy all this art on deviant art! I know I am!

-Geo

CSS made by =BloodPromiser

I am so excited but scared at the same time for a variety of reasons.

First I have 200 cards to draw in a month's time. Possible, yes. I asked for it. I DO NOT want any of them to be lackluster. That being said issues arise.

As many know I am basically a vagabond. Homeless and depending on the kindness of friends and family. Well my current residence is being sold and I am helping with the cleaning process as well as trying to organize my move to a friend's house. After him I have no clue what I'll do. Jobs aren't scarce here in my town, they are non existent. This is why I have to make sure I can do the best I can and better. Survival instinct. I honestly don't know how I got to this point but I keep my faith and trust in what I am doing as being what I was meant to do. So yeah this hinders the sketch cards as well.

The other thing is my first card will be a recreation of issue 300 of Amazing Spider-man. One of my favorite covers.

----

Sketch book. On top of everything else I'll be finally putting my sketchbook together.
I cannot comment and respond to everyone who has watched me recently, added faves or supported me in general but I greatly appreciate the support. The X-men Archives were a culmination of a lot of hard work and planning. It'll be a memory I'll have for the rest of my life. The experience of making the sketch cards as well (and probably more so) the reactions after the release from various people. It was the coolest thing to see people hunt for cards I made specifically for them or cards I made in General that caught others eyes. I wanted to make these cards top notch and show it. Granted, towards the end, I was more rushed and couldn't accomplish fully what I set out to do. In the end though it's all of you that helped me push and for that Thank you!

As a kid I got X-men more for the art (because let's face it, the various x-titles had great artists) then the story though I knew bits here and there so I was really excited for being asked to be on Spider-Man archives. I had read and enjoyed the art. In X-men I had to pull a lot of reference but I knew in Spider-Man I didn't need to. Just about every character is in my head (along with Hulk and Silver Surfer). Sadly through this that and the other I'll not be part of the set. I was a bit depressed about this until the X-men Archives set sh owed. Hopefully I make it unto the next set because I'm really going to let the reins loose. I love these characters and I love that people who grew up reading these comics loves them too. Todays comics totally miss the ball so sketch cards are nice in that we get a fresh revisit to better times in comics.

I hope you all will try to purchase sets of "Legends and Lore" from sadlittles.com as that is my next sketch card set. I'll be doing (looking back at desk)20 as I know so far but there maybe more. Others included are some buddies:

As well as Ingrid Hardy, Axebone, Jeremy Treece and a few others who should have deviant sites

It'll be the coolest set outside of comics you'll ever see this year (because let's face it, the movie cards have fell a little short in the must have sketch card department)

----

I'm trying to get more people to notice a very talented and well knowledged artist friend of mine : His stuff is pretty amazing and has sold at art auctions and art stores. He'd love for you to check his work out. It's not for everyone but if you like fine art you may just like this art.

Once again, thank you everyone for being there, Love you all.
Big name entertainers recently passed. Of the three Farrah gets all my respect. She fought a brave battle head on. She wasn't running away from it or anything. Although she was probably not a saint she inspired many people to hold on and fight. Something real and tangible to life.

Last year today Michael Turner passed away. He had the same spirit. We all knew his battle with cancer over the years. Yet he was still nice to fans when most people get depressed and lash out at others. He still worked to the best of his abilities even while he had to deal with attacks from people within the business (not mentioning names but a quick search will tell you what I'm talking about). When the cancer wasn't going to let go he kept drawing until the last day. Always with a smile on his face. Here's the journal I wrote a year ago after I had heard the news of his passing:

This seems to be the year for death. In the comics field we've lost Alex Toth and Mike Weiringo. Last night we lost another. Michael Turner.

I never had the pleasure of meeting the guy but never really went out of my way to see him either. I was not a fan at all. His life story seemed to be the thing of fairy tales. That's what always fascinated me about him.

Supposedly he started drawing a couple months before he became a comic book professional. He was athletic and into martial arts but the thing that always got me was he had cancer 4 times and beat it every time. God was really looking out for this guy.

Last night he succumbed to the foe he fought off so many times, cancer. Such an ugly disease. Let's all do our best to remember him today, search for interviews and get to know him.

CBR:

[link]

wiki:

[link]

[link]

Pandora.com. Thanks Dane Ault for that. It's nice to be able to type in a band or musician you like and get hit with others in a similar tone you never heard of. I had never heard of Grant Green but typing in Jazz guitarist (and favorite) Kenny Burrell brought me the warm tones of Grant.

The venture started with music to listen to while drawing. Robert Johnson and some old Mississippi blues was what I wanted to hear. Yesterday I thought I'd have a vibe for industrial music but I felt blues today after watching a blues harp guy beatboxing through a link via Skottie Young. Very nice.

My spectrum of music tastes is pretty wide and varied. I'm just not a fan of ego stroking lyrics (you'll never hear me listening to Kayne or Britney) but everything else is pretty go for me. Down to it's melodic roots up to it's seering vocals I just like good music. Period.

I want to say music was my first love but I think it ties with space, star wars, drawing and cartoons as the first things I really really liked.

I've been listening a lot recently to a podcast put out by the coolest cats in comic podcasting, Dwight and Swain of [link]. Right now I'm listening to an interview cast with Larry Stroman.

First let me say this. Larry did and said something to me in 95 that made my view of him not so good. So why listen to him? See if his being a jerk transfers over to the interview. Quick hand, how many artists with no one in their lines charge for their autograph and a dinky sketch? No one? Stroman's that man. Luckily Mignola and Finch were there and very cool to talk to. Anyway, I better digress. Not one of my favorite comic moments.

What's evolved over the day is a sign. I've learned to step back and notice things. I don't know what it was but earlier I found myself at the Image submissions page. Then over to Erik's Q&A about submitting. Skimmed it and read about an 6 to 8 month prep time for a comic to come out. So what right?

Now here I am listening to Larry talk about how it took about 6 months to get "Tribe" #1 out and in the mean time his only source of income was royalty checks from Marvel. Since Image doesn't have a page rate that means no moolah to work on the book. Of course the million book seller was the pay off.

This is where it starts sinking in. My project needs to be started on soon. This kind of sucks because I don't feel my art is up to par yet. I am willing to bet the concept and story with the right art would be enough to win Image over.

The initial idea was to get 2 issues done before submitting to Image. I was going to letter and try to ink the thing myself (cringing at that thought)but find someone else to color it. On top of that write it. Why? Because I know people worth their salt want money. I don't blame them one bit. I'd want it too on an unknown project. After all it can go no where. What to do what to do?

It'll probably get started after a 4 pager for my sketch book. I seem to lose so much energy for drawing so quickly. The whole being homeless (surprise!)thing doesn't help. Stay at one place for a month or two, then move, pack and move pack and move. Luckily the next move will come in September. I miss having my own place by heaps, even with the coked up child molesting neighbor who likes crashing into parked cars. I guess that's what drives me to make it. When you got a fire under your butt you move quick right? I'm going with my gut and keep telling myself I am making the right choice.

Still chugging along on sketch cards. No problems there. Problems arise with one of my favorite properties, star wars.

One piece, One piece is giving me problems like I can't believe. The layouts just never look right to me and I want to give this my best but there are only so many things I can do to make this look interesting. It is a collage of sorts which is where things get a bit hinky. The composition can work but then the interactivity of the characters doesn't. Get the interactivity down and the composition doesn't work. I logically read through all this which has been a severe downfall for me in the past. I'd like to be more free, mentally, and just go with it but sometimes I have to have things perfect.

Whoever said art was easy hasn't met me. I want to break down a few things I've learned along the way.

1)pay is lousy but payoff is awesome
2)Want to be a pro, expect to starve when you make it. Pay comes after the job is done...way after.
3)Deadlines...sure, drawing a comic sounds fun until your on page 10 with 2 days left. If you don't do it never expect to work in comics again for a good wage.
4) health. The inactivity due to sitting for so long to make deadlines is nuts. Not only that but the hours are surely not healthy.
5) sure seeing your stuff in print is great, awesome even (yay you finally realized your dream and drew spidey) but eventually that wears off...most comic artists get to a point where they don't even read comics and are just in it to support the fam.

So if you want all this, be prepared. Glory is good but it comes at a price. No wonder Todd quit.

Commissions and personal work are more fulfilling I feel. I'm a fan and as a fan it's awesome to do work for fans. I don't blow smoke up anyone's butt. You commission me to do something and if I am a fan expect a conversation about it. This is probably another reason why the star wars piece is hard...because I am a fan. I collect sketch card art as well as create it. I would love to afford bigger comic pages to look at like I did in the past (though an awesome collection, of Larsen, Finch and Lopresti, I had to sell them...all signed with my name by the artists MWA HA HA HA)but I've found artists I like in sketch cards that don't do comics and am trying to collect them because I am still a fan.

I love doing this. It's a pain but I love it. If you can love it, do it. Now back to wrestling with Star Wars

-Geo

Oh and I am considering no longer doing sketch card commissions. I will keep doing sketch cards but maybe not commission pieces, at least for the foreseeable future.

Well as of Monday I became officially done with X-men archives sketch cards. Although I am grateful for this I also feel a bit lost. It gave meaning to each day. Now I don't have to stay up so long and sleep so short. I can stop drinking so much pepsi. It's got it's good and bad.

I was able to gain something from this job. More insight into my process of sketch cards and art in general and speed. I just finished the Phoenix card today in record time BUT without holding back. Everything just flowed. The results made me pretty pleased with the finished product. This is good news as far as my commissions go. I can get them done a bit faster (doesn't mean I'll take on even more now though). Good stuff.

-----

My online buddy is getting into the swing of things doing sketch cards for the upcoming Legends and Lore set (it'll be kick butt awesome!). Swing buy and get a feel for this man's solid art.

There are a few more on the set that I'll pass along as time goes along.

I have one sketch card (of 2 blanks ) that I was allowed to sell before the set release on ebay here: [link] Has one day left. Next card will be my rendition of... Jack Frost.

Other artists have the chance to do the same as well so make sure you do a search of "legends and lore sketch cards" on ebay.

Take care all !

-Geo

If I don't get near the number I agreed to by Thursday I'll have to ask for an extension. Is it because I'm slow? No. I pump detail into my cards and my line work trying hard to render as though I'm drawing the actual comics. It takes me 1-2 hours to do a card. That's a max of 12 a day. Not happening. Trying to rush and I've already cut back on certain types of cards.

While I do have the cards and time I will be broadcasting, on and off, me drawing some of the cards. If anyone wants to check her work out grab a copy of Sonic 198 from archies.

-----

I've seen a lot of artists recently trying so hard to get somewhere in comics or illustration. Some I have faith in getting to their destination, others may need formal training or to look elsewhere in this realm. I wish I could help everyone but I still need work myself. I don't feel right giving advice beyond basics and generalities. Study anatomy, perspective and proportions. 100 artists in the industry will give you 100 different bits of advice but it comes down to this. Draw more, practice, study and force yourself to improve in areas your not good in. Then, do it your way. There are no secret tips. Everyone has their own thing. Although I've read about how other artists do this that or the other I still fall back on me. What works for me. Just don't ever let anyone get you down.

-Geo

Adventures for a first time sketch artist 4

I've got a handful of cards done. I tried the assembly line method for drawing them but it's just not me. Once I ink a piece and have an idea for colors I can't just let it go. I'm afraid I'll forget. The rough pencils helps a bit but I have to go in and tighten them up later anyway. I have to put my memory on paper to really work it.

This is almost a double edged sword, I'm finding it hard to do commissions and in the meantime I am not getting any sort of income though I did recently finish 3 commissions (of which I was very pleased with the results). Thanks guy for the comments on the Ms. Marvel vs. Phoenix. It's one of those turning point cards for me.

----

Comics for a cure is turning out great.
Adventures for a first time sketch artist 3

5 cards are completely down and a few more are inked and even more in the pencil stage. Output seems to be two fully done cards a day but what I am observing is if I just ink and not ink and color I should be able to bump up to 5 a day with ten a day possible through natural progression. Not sweating a thing yet.

Two things occurred today that are of interest to whom ever is interested.

My "baby blue" copic has run dry and with no refill or spare marker available I may have to avoid coloring for a few days until I get a replacement or refill. This color is vital to me as I use it for sky as well as the lightest blue tone in blue colored objects. Not surprising that it was the first to go. Gray 01 would be next if I hadn't already replaced it and sent the almost dry one to Jeremy Treece (he wanted to sample copics and see what all the fuss is about...I'm still waiting for that answer). I attempted to use my watercolors to finish the card I was working on as the marker ran out. The material does not hold well to watercolor but I was able to get some blue down to finish the card.

The other thing is a sort of cheat for me. I have created the scene on this card but I opted out of a super background for an explosion. I wish I could use the time issue excuse but fact of the matter is after I inked the character an explosion seemed more fitting then a jungle scene. There will be something behind the explosion but I have no clue what. I'm thinking buildings. It was also on this card I decided to bust out of the box and not use the .005 micron. Line weight has been bugging me a lot and I decided to do something drastic and risking failure. I bumped up to .05. It turned out really nice. Sometimes going with your gut turns out some amazing surprises.

BTW I was never told not to tell people what characters I am working on, I just think it'd be better as a surprise so

------

Now, mosey on over to the Comics for a Cure sketch card auction at 7 p.m. (central/eastern) March 28th here:

[link]

bookmark it and set it up with a timer.
Adventures for a first time sketch artist 2

After coming out of the stall like a snail I changed up my routine today. It was really rough getting just 2 highly detailed cards out in one day and that, to me, was way too slow. I have a month to do this and that pace will not work.

I was hesitant to change things as I am set in my ways and thought it was the only way I could do quality stuff but push came to shove and I needed to try something else. I decided to do stages instead of whole cards so I grabbed 8 cards and penciled, really rough, the subjects I wanted. 8 cards is great. I was able to ink 3 so far and it does seem to go faster. Obviously the more I do the quicker I will go. What amazes me most is this is some of the best stuff I've ever done! Only wish I could show them but I can't yet.

The subject matter I decided to start in on was X-men characters from the era I was reading the comics like mad (88-96). There was a bit more excitement to art back then and none of the stiff art you see now days. I've popped in the dead and some of the long forgotten that, to me, were very visually appealing as well as very under played characters. I do have some regulars but in their get ups from back then. After I've gotten that out of my system I want to get the whole New Mutants/Longshot/inter dimensional travel subjects down then the modern era. I would love to do the 70s era X-men but, quite frankly, I could come no where near doing that justice.

Oh and I should mention that this is seriously wearing me out (that or the burnout from all the caffeine I am drinking). I love this subject and am still giddy about doing it.

----

Just got the news. The Blue Line Charity Auction for Cancer will begin March 28th (I had forgotten the time) and can be found here:

[link]

Everyone get ready!

Adventures for a first time sketch artist 1

Got my blanks yesterday (still my today). It was nice having "official" contracts from Marvel and RA. I was elated to finally get them.

I took a while before breaking them open. Ran to a store with a friend to see if they had Sketch magazine in. Apparently it's not out in comic shops just yet but soon! I got home and then I sat down and magically something came out. What rocked was the way my pen worked on the stock. It was as if I had a nib and I could actually control the line width on this as opposed to normal stock. Made drawing smooth like butta!

The cards are oversized with marks to be cut later so that was a bonus. It gave me more room to work with. After I completed the first card I had to scan it to see what it would look like cropped and it was great! (Do not request for a peek because I won't give one).

After it was done it was time for a little Halo 3 break. Jon Artsta was on and since I rarely get to talk to this cat we had a conversation while shooting each other in a custom game. After he left I played one game and went back to the drawing board. I had planned on doing a certain amount of cards of one character before moving on but the plan was changed due to artist block so I worked on another character. The inks are about done on her and I'll get to colors when I wake tomorrow.

Almost two cards done in the first day but I had distractions. Tomorrow will be different. So far I've not held back so whoever is getting my cards will not be disappointed

This is going to be an interesting ride

-Geo

This was initiated by The Blue Line auction for a cure that I became a part of driven by the death of my uncle from Cancer. Then I had lost my job in a factory. I saw this as a hint from God to get back into art and to get way out of factory work.

When I said I'd be going all out this year I meant it and this has become a very big step for me and validation that I am doing the right thing.

I'm glad I know you all, for me crits don't help me improve. I see what I do wrong, it's what I do right I can't see. So the positive comments and support helped me a lot.
Wow, someone totally missed the ball on this one. Not only did it fail to capture the even a little bit of the essence of the graphic novel, as a movie is was not that great.

I went in because I followed the hype and expected a halfway decent translation (I knew it was impossible to translate the Graphic Novel at all but some of it could). Snyder rearranged and added as well as took away so many essential things that as a movie it felt completely..incomplete. In fact, aside from the Red Herring, the story was different. It's as if they took the ten best devices from the Graphic Novel and tied them together with some made up gobbeldy gook. With the messed up Nixon it really looked like something Miller would do.

Was the movie bad? A bit yes but it had it's good parts. As a whole I would wait until it's on dvd unless you dig CGI Blue penis. They liked to shove minuscule stuff like that in your face during the movie as well as shove Rorschach in forced shots before he's unmasked both things that were not done in the GN (in the GN pre unmasked, Rorschach is always picketing in the background, in the movie they stop the camera on him constantly).

The only character that came across good in translation was Rorschach. The Comedian and Dr. Manhattan to a lesser degree. I think Snyder skimmed (like many who like to claim they read the whole of Watchmen)the graphic novel and didn't really read it through. It was hard see the bad make up aging jobs on the older characters.

I have to agree with the guy who said "I'd rather watch The Spirit". I'll give it a second viewing when it's out on dvd because I did get a feeling someone edited a lot of stuff from the movie. That's hollywood for you.

This journal's artist is Nicole . Weird one for me as I've followed her stuff for at least 8 years (we used to frequent a certain board and I was pretty vocal about her work and future). I amazed at people, like her, that truly enjoy drawing enough to give it 110 percent. A grad of Joe Kubert school she's been doing some cool work for companies. Give her stuff a good look and tell her how awesome her brush work is. I still remember the old colored pencil stuff she did. She's constantly hungry and growing in her art.

Topic: I feel like utter crap. I've had brucitus in my right rotator cuff since 2001 due do repetitive lifting of heavy objects over head (8 to 10 hour shifts of things weighing 75 to 150 pounds one after another). It only acts up if I try throwing a fastball or lifting things above my head. Recently it's been aching like no one's business. It's extremely painful and annoying. The last solution I knew of was to fuse my rotator cuff and that ain't going to happen. I'm an active person in the summer (i.e. kayaking, hiking and various other outdoor activities). I am really hating getting old.

The other thing is I am feeling burnout. The last time I did I avoided drawing for over ten years with the exception of an occasional doodle. I can't stop right now though but I need some sort of recharge and I have no clue what.

Entertainment: Just got done watching Gran Turino (sadly the car is a Ford...GM fan here). I always enjoy Clint Eastwood (except for Paint your wagon...ugh)and thought it was very good. Very much in the vein of Mystic River. So watch it.

Also recently watched Burn After Reading. This is why I like the Coens. With the reviews and hits it took I though it was another Lady Killers (only Coen flick I don't like). I was wrong. It was quirky and went against all sorts of type.

Hopefully going to check Watchmen this weekend. I am not going in expecting a translation of the GN. It's missing several elements of literary importance that can't be translated to film. It's also missing the sub stories and the ending has been changed. As a film it looks good so far but the marketing of the graphic novel as the source seems misplaced as it's its own story.

Inking: I need some drills for inking with a Nib. I can't seem to get to where I was 12 years ago with a nib (possibly due to studying Calligraphy) and everything I do looks like crap to me.

After: When I get my commissions and cards for the "Legends and Lore" card set done I'll be sculpting until the bigger thing comes a long in April.

I was over at my friend's today and he showed me his recent stop motion project (most people don't realize I'm a filmmaker as well-did the film school thing and what not). It looked pretty freakin nice. He cued it up to some Residents music (finally got him listening to them, yay!). He's into the found art aspect of stop mo that the Quay Brothers are famous for. I have a plan for an abstract piece that maybe interesting. We have a studio set up for it.

Cassie wants to grow and is eager to do fun cards. She has a very unique style and all her cards are of a illustrative quality. Looking at them you know she had fun doing them. Check out her deviant site and commission her for some Hulks , or whatever you like. I enjoy her work and so should you.

Ok, no 5000 art. I started on a Powergirl holding a cake but forget it. I don't have the time right now. So I'll aim for 7500 (6000 is already coming too quick!).

I got my customized card stock. It looks sweet but I need to find something to mark the back as the high gloss is anti normal pen ink. I have about 200 of these things and that's it. I will not be reusing the design. They are dated for 2009 so they have to be gone before 2010 shows up

For sale: I pulled a Bryan Turner card from MMII. I was gunning for a Nar or a Hulk by anyone. Bryan only made 50 cards. His art is pretty cool to look at. So if you dig cool art and like Iron Fist then lookee here:

[link]

Coming up: Card sets, recently aquired a 72 card tarot commission, still working on a sculpture commission and two star wars pin ups as well as 5 more sketch card commissions.

Thanks for stopping by

-Geo

Currently he's going to art school and working very hard to try and make his dream come true. Support him by reading the comics he's working on, add him as a friend (he's a funny guy) and fave some of his stuff

5000 soon: Well since no one had suggestions I was inspired by a song I was listening to on my awesome Coby MP3 player (and by awesome I mean cheap but works good). I am probably going to make a video of the creation of the piece. Does anyone know how to put a youtube video up on Deviant? For that matter how the heck do some of you add graphics to your boxes on your pages and journals?

Curiosity: Always a fan of Surreal and Landscape art I've been a very subtle fan of Art Nouveau and even more subtle with Art Deco. I want to hunt down some books on these formats. I understand they are more illustrative/graphic in nature then out and out fine art still they are really nice to look at. I do know that Nouveau originated from Czech areas. So if anyone has suggestions on good books, let me know. Of course I mean books you've read and not a suggestion based on a review on a site upon which you want to link me to (Sorry, but that's really annoying).

Structure: Things are coming together pretty fast for me. The next step is getting comic art (sequentials mainly) practiced on. I'm making myself all kinds of nervous. I actually know the areas I need to work on and some days they seem overwhelming.

Thanks: Everyone for the kind words and support.
Wow time goes by. Almost 5,000 views. For someone who is relatively unknown I think that's a good indicator I am doing something right (namely improving myself).

The artist for this journal goes by the name of Dane but to his friends and family he is simply known as...well, Dane:

I've enjoyed seeing his use of colors on hand drawn projects BUT where he really excels is vector art. Truly a master of his skill I never tire of seeing his designs. Of particular note is his ever popular Zantana piece.

Issues: Not a lot of people get under my skin now days but I am really getting tired of a particular person who seems to want me to remain in stagnation with them. It's time to take responsibility for yourself.

Growth: A year after I had begun sketch cards with the Blue Line Charity Auction I find myself reflecting on the great and wonderful ride. It began with the auction but continued with a push from Wesley Wong and Ramona also by the grace of God. I realized who to listen to and who not to listen to to get ahead. Now I amazed at the requests I get even when I am not doing commissions, I maybe in a magazine soon and have a couple card sets coming up. Never in my wildest imagination. My goal is to get into a comic by the end of the year.

Pass it along: Just because I am growing doesn't mean I'll be little the next guy to try and get ahead. I have some talented people in my friends list here and have recommended some of them to people with success on their part. I am very confident my eye for talent is one of the better ones and I pass that along. Growth is always the key with me. So if your in a position to help someone talented, do it and I don't mean by telling them how their art can be better

Receding: I try to avoid political and economic talks because there ends up always being the bass ackwards logic to argue me with that months later is proven to be as crap as it sounded to me. We are in a very bad time in our economy and our government apparently thinks it's because of the housing market. Well, the housing market crashed because people lost their jobs as the Bush administration opened up trade full bore overseas yet the politicians say fix the banks and housing market. Analogy time.

A car loses it's wheels while on the road. This causes the car to go slow as it has no wheels. The wheels are jobs. The driver determines it's going slow because the engine is breaking down (engine is the bank) so the solution is to push the pedal further to the floor to add more gas (money) to the engine to make it run fast again. However, the car starts shaking more and slows down again , this time even worse. So the driver adds more gas. Eventually the car will be run into the ground. It's not the engine(bank) that's wrong, it's the wheels (jobs) but the driver refuses to get out of the car to look because they are so sure it's the engine (bank). Eventually a 200 to 300 dollar fix (buy new tires- bring jobs back and close trade again) will turn into a 20,000 dollar replacement as the car crumbles apart.

Do some research, write your reps and tell them to open their eyes, listen to the people who elected them and close trade off now. We need to fix ourselves before helping others with their economies.

Bleh: This was a fun jounral

-Geo

I'm going to forgo a journal artist for now.

I've tried to read recent comic books and find that the art, though skillfully done, is quite boring. It maybe nice to look at the work of Leniul or Greg Land but seriously..boring. When comics had their footing the imagery wasn't static, it was dynamic. Now very few artist do the dynamic thing instead opting to go for a photographic snapshot. I love Travis Charest work but not as a comic. Is it the writing killing comics or is it the art? Let's get some fun artist back in the mix. I've seen many people on deviant that should be doing comics (maybe they are) that are 100 times more dynamic then the guy doing Hulk vs. X-men. I love the Hulk but I saw the first page and I felt nauseous. Gimme a Liefeld over Land any day. It may not look right but sure is a lot more fun to look at.

That being said, I was reading someone's journal or forum entry and it was from a year ago. Something about a Zuda competition. I was curious about Zuda and decided to go to the site. First comic I selected to read I had read the entire series. What's weird is it was somewhat a vampire story. I hate vampires. I trucked through though as the art looked kind of fun but the writing had me hook line and sinker. Before I knew it it was over. So check it out, you won't regret it:

[link]

I didn't have time to view other comics but I'd like to find something in this vein as the second story arc isn't up yet.

There are a couple projects coming up for me in comic form. First a redesign of my space traveling gun toting guy. Also have a series I am trying to woo into doing. I am finally getting my ideas out there and found the right mix of people. Those who encourage and don't discourage.

Other projects include a short film shoot called "The Door". Finally got my friends to get away from the comedy. Also I am getting my friend trained in comic book coloring (not by me) so he'll probably be in the industry before me. Other then that (and a way overdue sculpt commission) I'll just keep drawing and trying to improve because standing still is boring.

This journal we will visit the artist known as Tony. I don't really know him well (yet) but we now share a story of humor (funny to me and his wife anyway). He's a solid sketch card artist who utilizes colored pencil (which kind of surprised me, I assumed he used marker). He's worked on a few Marvel card sets and is an easy chap to talk to. So hop on over to and check his stuff out.

About: The journal artist is never an established pro because, well, the guys I enjoy don't need me to tell people about them (Adam Hughes, Liam Sharpe, Ed McGuiness are a few examples..see?). Also it is always someone who I watch grow. What I love most about artists are seeing growth. So if you ain't growing then I ain't showing Get to it already!

Grinding away: I have just finished inks on probably the most detailed card I have done to date. Not the intention. Sometimes these things just grow. In fact I was going to tell the person who commissioned me that it'd be impossible to fit the characters in this tiny card in a way that only showcases one. Then I went and did it. Compositionally I didn't like it then the background came. I got a bit carried away. Needless to say my eyes hurt. It was enjoyable. Sometimes I don't even know what'll happen on a card

Lost: A couple weeks ago I bought final fantasy tactics for the gameboy advance. I played it before bed until the battery died. I couldn't find my charger plug so I asked a friend if I could borrow his. Now I can't find my gameboy. DOH!

Heroes: Can't put my finger on it but I felt the new episode fell a bit short. In fact the last 2 seasons seem all over the place. It's beginning to look a lot like lost...IOW making it up as they go.

Lost: This show I still watch but I am lost. It is interesting to see all the time hopping and the stories have begun to become more cohesive. Luckily JJ Abrams is slating a 2010 finale so it will end. Please, no Movies afterwards.

J.J. Abrams: This guy really likes to get inside your head with a blender. This weeks fringe was freaking awesome. A little Hulk type episode. If you haven't seen it , go to Hulu.com (jointly owned by nbc and fox) and watch "Fringe" while it's still in season 1.

Where'd he go?: To Bed

Rhymes with hole: Geo

This journal's artist is a cat I've known online for a few years that goes by the awesome name of Gideon (yup, his real name) . I am always amazed at his growth yet he doesn't draw as much as one would think. I keep yelling at him to keep drawing, the guys work shows structure and the ability to grow and adapt. It'd be in all your best interests to check this deviant out and add him as a friend. It's in his best interest that you continue to berate him into drawing more

News Flash: I am out of board for my cards. I ordered more. Until then I was going to use illustration board but it's way too toothy. I'll save them for water colors. I also this 2 ply strathmore stuff that I'd really hate to use. Not a big fan of flimsy anything.

I will have custom printed cards in a month, until then I only want to use quality material. Speaking of quality...

Copics are good. They are cheaply made, however, as attested to the nib removing itself from one of my markers during uncapping and all the markers having loose nibs (by nibs I mean the nib and holder). I understand the nature of the beast being that it's refillable (a notion that, over time, has become very dumb when I had thought about it).

Work processes: I was very dumbfounded to find out that an artist in this sketch card realm draws his cards bigger then shrinks them done and does a tracing paper transfer. I do the reverse for comic pages as it gives you a feel for composition. If someone can tell me the point of doing it in reverse for trading cards I'd like to know. Obviously, judging by his cards, detail and accuracy aren't the reasons. Not knocking the guy, I just want to know if it's something new I should add to my arsenal because of some reason I am totally overlooking.

Speaking of: I'd like to get my work process posted on here on a card I was trying to do currently (illustration board problem)but I'm afraid you'll miss the coloring stage so I'll be doing a pencil, ink and color thing. I would like to get a video going BUT I have to rig my camera or find a camera that I can use to record without getting in the way. I had done this long ago with a couple paintings but I forgot how the set up was and the paintings were obviously bigger.

Page views: I am almost at 4000 (that's my mom visiting the site 3500 times and everyone else near 500). I almost thought about doing a piece of art and a contest for it but then I thought "4000, that's not enough" so as soon as 5000 comes so will the art and the contest...think green and shells

Crack: Kills

Me: Geo

This journal's artist is a stand up guy and very professional person:

~DougDraw

I first met him through him giving me a favorite. I looked at his art and thought it was pretty unique but when I got a card from him, well there just aren't any words to describe the injustice the scanner gave his art. They are extremely beautiful pieces. He's affordable so commission a piece from him already He does it all! Not only that but as a surprise I received 2 wood cut outs with his art in the shape and likeness of Wolverine and Hulk. Perfect display pieces. You'll have to bug him about these because I don't know the availability but they are so freakin awesome. As well he makes custom chess sets in this style. Very nice guy so don't be afraid to approach him

Weather report: It's flippin cold outside! We hit a negative 35 degrees Fahrenheit last night with the wind chill. Not sure what that is in Celsius but imagine an ice cube, now imagine 1 million of them in a tub, now imagine you are underneath the ice cubes and a fan is blowing down on you. Seriously, that cold.

Economic woes: Circuit city is going under, go there, now. They are liquidating starting today. Hard drives, games, cameras. Deals to be had I'm sure (though I am quite frankly broke at the moment).

Vigea Games: Halo 3: Lords Servant let's play. I'm also playing the mission in orange box (episode one as I beat half life on the original xbox). Great story but I appear to have gotten stuck. Great puzzle game and good sci fi story (I loves me some sci fi!).

Outlook: Though I am doing sketch cards I also do pin ups. One problem with that is coloring (I loathe it now days). Luckily a friend is stepping up so that shouldn't be an issue. Eventually that'll free me up to work on sequential pages. I am hoping to get decent enough by Chicago Comicon to have a smittering of a chance to get some work. I still have a long way to go. For me it's a matter of patience. I always want to rush to get things done. It's the A.D.H.D. in me, such a curse.

Did I mention how cold it is? Well, that'd be all. Thanks for taking a minute to read the writings of a man who's mine is slowly decaying

-Geo

I found him when his prices were affordable to me haha. They're still good prices so snatch a commish from him before they go into the thousands!

Main topic:

Ever have someone fight you tooth and nail over nothing? Someone who is difficult just to be difficult? There was a point where I enjoyed this person but they have become increasingly annoying and I can't help but want to run in the other direction.

I'm pretty easy going guy but seriously, your opinion is not mine so stop trying to change it and we can all live in peace

Working out:

I've gone back to working out. Something I haven't done this intensely in years. For my size I am freakishly strong in my short grouping muscles if I work out. Side effect, those muscles get pretty big. My arms are already showing increase in size. Make no mistake, this is not what I wanted. I want to tone up. I'm a single guy and only getting older and I want to be ready for the beach this summer (unless some lucky lady snags me up...well it'd be lucky for me anyway). All in all though it feels good.

Drawing:

I've got this nagging sensation to do a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles piece. Full size and possibly one for the Blue Line Sketch card auction. I'll probably raffle the finished piece off (yay I stole an idea) to help me get my eyes taken care off (yeah I'm a bit overdue for new glasses...actually aiming for contacts). Or I just may make prints.

Sketch book:

I still need ideas! Let's hear them. Tell me what you like seeing in artist sketch books.

Also, any artist that have sketch books for sale let's hear about them!

Exit, Stage Left:

Ciao!

Signature:

Geo

He almost inspired me to do the art thing again but I passed at the time. He's a quiet guy but check out his gallery, his art does more then enough speaking for him!

This that and the other:

Decided to get a 360 next week. I've been bumming play off my friend's for a while and I think it's time to just get one (because, quite frankly, his house smells and there's a pitbull with half a brain in it).

Add me if your up for Halo 3 death. I only own a couple games right now. I am a halo addict through and through (and stomp past the pretenders). I do have orange box and I also play a bit of the gh3. My gamertag is: Lord's servant

Paint:

In addition, next week I plan on getting some modeling paste. Why? To start my acrylic endeavors into painting. Alas I have yet to get an air brush. Doing sketch cards is too limiting so I figured I better work big again.

Sculpt:

I am way behind on a sculpt commission. As I am finishing several commissions shortly I will get to this. HOPEFULLY in 2 to 3 weeks I'll be opening commissions again. I'm also putting together a sample for a online comic.

Charity:

Gotta get working on the Blue Line Sketch cards for auction. So far I just have the hulk and I have a Spidey laid out BUT I am thinking of changing it. I don't like using the bluem line sketch cards so this auction is the ONLY time I will ever use them. 4 are out there now and 4 on the way.

Bam:

I was asked to be a lead artist for the publisher of the Legends and Lore card set that is forth coming. So far I have done (minus colors) a Loki promo card. Be on a look out for this set as many will contribute sketch cards to it. Also, this will be highly collectible as it is the first card set from this publisher and will lead to some tasty licensed properties. Get in on it before everyone else so you can brag "I was the first!"

In conclusion:

That's all I got for now. Still working on the site and sketchbook. Take care all!

-Geo

ok, the title is really lame but you think of a better.

I'm going to do one off filler journals to highlight some artists I admire and some I feel are overlooked talents.

First off is Nar:

[link]

(I still have no clue how to make a avatar link)

This guy is all of the early 90s best packed into one. I've fallen out of love for Liefeld and many of the image creators as I've grown over the years. Much like guitar I over analyzed why I shouldn't like the art and forgot that when I was younger it was awesome. Nar's brought that feeling back. Too many artists have decided to go the sterile homogenized route forsaking dynamics for stills. I realized it was this that sucked fun out of comics for me but it looks like we're getting back on track with folks like Nar (among many others).

Relatable: I JUST finished reading all "Invincible" issues until now. I should have started a long time ago (like when the series started). Although it doesn't remind me of comics of yore (someone had mentioned that but really, do they remember the comics they read? Cause they sure didn't look or read anything like that). It does remind me of more Savage Dragon type shenanigans while trying to maintain an air of seriousness. It's a seriously fun read.

In other news: I've just uploaded artwork for custom 2009 year sketch card blanks. The back of the cards were designed with a nifty caricature of mwa. Once I am done with these cards there will be no more for 2009 or if 2010 comes and I have blanks left over they are going in the trash

2009 is going to be the big push year for me. It's going to have to be. I appreciate everyone who has supported me by kind comments and words of encouragement. I only ask that you please stay on the ride because it's going to get intense.

Has anyone seen or heard from Murry lately?

This year is a bit tight on a lot of folks. I hope we all realize this is not a time for getting but for giving. Material things are not necessary to give. Hugs are great, self sacrifice of time and labor for those in need (not to be confused with those in want) are all things you don't need to spend money on.

This is also a good time to get a super power-up of family and friends. Some we barely see during the year some we see all the time. Take these moments and cherish them because you never know who will return tomorrow and who will never return. Be like a vacuum and suck those memories up.

Those who don't have family or many friends nearby take this as a time to go out and make family and friends or a time to reflect on the previous year and store what good memories you can. Or just relax, take a break.

I say Merry Christmas, not happy holidays (because let's face it there is nothing happy about the day after thanksgiving or the day after new years eve if you been hitting the sauce. Yeah also because I am a Christian and believe you stand by what you are and not what corporate america wants you to be. Just be you.

I wish I had a joke or warm story to tell but I am bad at telling jokes and the only warm story I want to tell is one from a warm place (it's freakin below 0F here without the windchill!).

Be safe on the roads those of us who have to travel in the snow. We want cheers and not tears on Christmas!

Take care all!

-Geo

Let me start by saying I am half Korean. This is important. My mom immigrated here and I was born here (In the USA). That being said I am sure a lot of ethnic types and first gen americans can share the same type of story.

For the last couple days I've had a hankering for a Korean soup and some chili pepper paste with rice. The soup is basically a mesh of soy products that most people would avoid. Tofu, soybean sprouts, soy bean curd paste and sliced green onions. I have a hard time getting a hold of my mom so I figured I'd make the stuff. Cue my first trip to the oriental store as an adult and by myself.

The lady who owns the place is Korean. I told her who was my mom and she kind of looked shocked (Spoken in english as I never really learned more then a few words in Korean). I just told her what I needed and she knew the soup I was making. She gave me some free stuff called Kim Pa (it looks like a sushi roll but with veggies or veggies and cooked meat along with rice). We talked about a lady who recently passed that was very well known in the korean community in a roughly 80 mile radius area (she knew me since I was born). Then off I went.

What surprised her was not who my mom was but the fact I was making my own Korean food. I had told her I still have to learn how to make my mom's eggrolls, kim chee and other things. She had said what I already knew...traditional Koreans do not write down korean dish recipes (in fact the recipes you find online are usually off by a lot so don't be fooled). They store the recipes in their heads. This is true of many people from other lands. What got me though, while in thought, is how many people don't know how to cook traditional dishes.

It's a shame that we are a generation full of people in a hurry and not stopping to savor the finer things in life. Fast food has definitely made us super lazy (not just restaurants but microwave food as well). It's a shame I haven't learned the other dishes. Out of my siblings I am the only one capable of cooking the food correctly (my brother is the finicky eater and my sister thinks cooking is when the meat isn't read anymore). If my mom passes before us then they'll be scrambling to figure out what to do for Korean food they like. Of course I'll have to accommodate because I am the oldest and do care.

I've just noticed this about a lot of my asian, latino and european friends. Another sign of a new age?

So , like every other person, I am having a hard time finding steady work. Doing commissions makes me a little (very little ) amount of money so it's more a supplemental thing (though it's my only source of income right now). Trying to keep a positive attitude about it. If anyone can lead me to some illustration work or lead it to me I would owe a lot

The other issue I am currently dealing with is a semi serious health problem. Luckily where I live there is a charity health plan that is helping with doctor's visits and medicine. If something major happens though it's pretty useless.

I don't want to say what it is exactly but it involves an organ possibly failing on me. This maybe what's been causing me great shocks of pain in my back near the kidneys as well as problems with my eyes going out of focus when I am trying to draw.

That's about it for the bad news. The good news is I will be getting a portfolio and sketch book together. I am shooting for 32 pages, comic book sized with an area for a sketch on the back. I have the first four pages of my online comic planned to put in it as well as some of my old art, concept art and background art. Is there anything else anyone can think of that they would like to see in the book? Let me know.
-----
Somewhere I feel I took a step backwards with my art as it's getting hard to draw as small as I did before (because of the eye thing) but I feel it's coming back up to par overall so I'll begin my web comic soon. This is all just practice for a concept comic I don't feel I am ready to draw for myself yet.
-----
Cassie and DougDraw have been awesome to me so stop by their pages and check their work out. Cassie had done a cool halloween set with spidey as Hulk and Hulk as Spidey for me and Doug had surprised me with another Hulk card that definitely shows why he is the man.
-----
Deviantart still goes slow. I won't (and right now can't) get a subscription even though they apparently have taken more things away from non subscribers. I'm doing what I can to post new art up though.
-----
I will not be doing any more realistic sketch cards. They take more time then I am willing to give on something so small. I'd rather do the pictures bigger with more detail. Of course this doesn't include anything Star Wars

That's my updates in true newsletter fashion!

-Geo

That offers a lot of encouragement that I am doing the right thing and (hopefully) progressing in the right direction as I continue to improve more and more.

Other encouragement comes from some of the pros I've messaged here. Back when I was heavy into comics (the 90s) pros were as approachable to me as celebrities were. I'd get starstruck and not say anything. Some I could never get a chance to meet and talk with. Until now

This place offers everyone a chance to be on the same level. I have avoided it for years and years because I had thought of it as something less then flattering (I still think the admins are blind and not very savvy in how to run a business) but the community here is great.

Trust me when I say I have a hard time adding favorites anymore but I do view every ones new deviants. Every artist on my friends list is a great artist or has the potential to be great. Not a rotten banana in the bunch.

In other news the old school thing might not go for a while. I have a bunch of commissions to work on, an action figure prototype to sculpt and a few paintings to paint (and the green grass grew all around all around and the green grass grew all around).

Thanks folks. You make me feel inspired!

-Geo

Fun for one fun for all!

So here was the idea. I posted some of the art I did over 20 years ago (dang I feel old)and got a comment from [link] and thought "Hey, it'd be cool to revise the character and have him in a comic with Gula's old character!". He was up for it.

I'm adding more to it though!

It can only be done on copy paper or lined school paper. Must only be in pencil or ball point pen. Yes, old school all the way!

It'll probably be a back and forth thing where he does the dialouge for his guy and I for mine with an overall plot from both. However I think it may be workable as a growing for fun project with more people. Format is simple and easy, real quick to do so it can sprout many directions with many people.

So, if you got some old school drawings of superheroes you created, post em up! Give details and if you feel up to it, join in on the fun!
