We're now down to the under 2 week mark for when my family (me, hubby, brother, mom and dad) will be taking a 2 week trip to Orlando and spend time at Disney World, Universal~ and I wanna go to Cirque du Soleil and Arabian Nights. We haven't done a BIG family vacation with my parents oh... in 10 years... and it was to Disney World! That was during my junior year of highschool. I brought home my much beloved poster from Aladdin signed by the voice actors of Al and Jas. I want to bring home another thing for my wall, perhaps a cel or something...

But, since I am going to be gone for 2 weeks, I'm taking a hiatus from stuff~ Meaning, no new commissions until I come back. The ones I have now, I shall work to get them completed before I leave (Dec. 5th) as best I can. This also means, if you want to order anything from my personal website ([link]) - AND YOU KNOW YOU DO! I mean, OMIGOD, who can resist one of these cuties: [link] - get your order in before Dec. 2nd so I have time to get in the mail before I leave.

And one last note~ if you do order an Enchanted Name (that ubber cute chibi I linked above), I've gotten reports the order form is on the fritz (Yeah! I love it when technology goes kurplunk!)~ so you may need to email me personally and we'll work one on one to get your Enchanted Name order going.

Happy Thanksgiving (to those who celebrate it) and don't get yourself killed if you dare to shop on Black Friday!

---

Commissions: No new orders until I get back from DW

Clubs I'm a part of:

So, yesterday around 6 PM my throat was slightly sore and I thought "Hmm...funny feeling you have throat...I shall pop an extra vitamin C pill for you". This morning, the soreness has moved to the other side of my throat (like it's this living thing this soreness) and as the day progressed, my head feels heavier and heavier. And I go "WTF? This is the symptons of a head cold, but I already HAD my yearly prescribed headcold like a month ago! I don't want nor need TWO!" I shake my fists in fury at the evilness that is the cold and flu season.

My OMG is that we're finally getting a fence in our backyard!! WHOOT! For those who are not homeowners or don't own dogs, you may be under estimating the amount of OMG-ness that should be alotted to getting a fence. Fences are awesome because then puppies (like 65 lb Shepards) can wrestle and play in them, keep the neighborhood kiddies OUT of our yard, and put a lock on said fence so the horrible horrible lawn mow company that the HOA has hired this year won't destroy our backyard grass at least (granted the dog's pee does a great deal of damage as it is)!

---

Commissions: [link]

Clubs I'm a part of:

Tomorrow I'm leaving for a short trip down to Louisiana to visit my great-grandma. It's going to me, mom and my grandma and grandpa visiting her. She's declining in health, so this is a visit that could potentially be the last visit. So, while it's nice I'll get to see her, it'll be sad knowing it's probably for the last time. We'll return Nov 10th, next Tuesday~ so any notes or comments sent I'll deal with them when I get back. ^^

In other news, I've done horribly thus far for NaNo. ^_^**** Mostly because I've been wrapping up projects to get ready for this trip! But, I am bringing my laptop with me (an old thing that weighs a ton, but it still works!!) and can write in the car while we're traveling. At least I think I can type in the car while we're traveling...I can't read in the car on long trips because I get headaches from it (minor motion sickness, never enough to puke, but enough to get headaches and be basically unhappy)...so we shall see..

Take care all!!

---

Commissions: [link]

Clubs I'm a part of:

I did it for the first time last year and goign to do it again this year~ Two shorter stories this year intead of the big novel I was working on last year. One will be a children's story (tentaively called Mozart Finds a Friend and inspired by my cockatiel, Mozart) and the other a slice of life story that I want to turn into a strip webcomic someday...maybe sometime in 2010 but not sure... tentatively calling that story Another Day in Paradise. Anyone else going to go NaNo and what are you guys going to write about?

Clubs I'm a part of:

What a month~ beginning of it I had a weekend at the RenFest, then last weekend was Motaku (Kansas City's 2nd anime convention to pop up), then I also got sick last week with a head cold~ put me out of commission for awhile. ::falls over:: I've recovered from the cold and playing catch up with a lot of stuff(OMIGOD, who KNOW emails and everything would back up so quickly when one get sick!!).

So, yeah~ firstly, I got my batch of calendars. So, if any of you would like to purchase one directly from mwah (I shall sign the copy), you can send me a note. Calendars cost $20 plus $2 for shipping in the United States. If you live outside of the United States, tell me where you are, and I will figure out how much shipping will cost. If you want to see what the calendar looks like go here: [link]

Secondly~ my webcomic started! ::throws confetti:: The story is called Ylseria, and it's one that has been perculating in my head since sophomore year of highschool. I wrote a good chunk of it during NaNoWriMo last year, finished up in the beginning of 09, revised it in the Spring, and have been working on pages (err...sometimes ATTEMPTED to work on...) for it's debut today. So go check it out here: [link] It will be updated every Wednesday, and hopefully in the spring of 2010 we'll have another story or two starting on the website.

Hope all is going well! I am going to start taking commissions next month, so all those watching and waiting for the info, just a little bit longer!! It probably won't happen until after I get back from Lousiana though~ three generations of woman (me, my mom, and my grandma) are traveling down there to visit my great grandma, because she's not doing so well...so we're trying to get that last visit in...since we don't know if there will be any visits after that). So that puts commission taking at mid-November. /nod

So, today I met with the Crafts Coordinator of the RenFest and got myself another weekend for this season! Whoot! It's in a different space, slightly smaller (which isn't a bad thing) and on the main street (so traffic should be a lot better). Sunday mom and I are going to go to the RenFest and check out the space, so I can get an idea of how I want to set it up. I got weekend #5 (October 3rd and 4th), which is Scottish weekend (Kilts oh my!)~ which I have been told by my in-laws is a very popular weekend.

So, if anyone is passing through the KC area~ check me out at the RenFest! Booth 266 this time. ^^ Still fairly close to the Main Gate entrance.

And, in other news~ I am a Disney Gargoyles fan. I LOVE the show so much (a Disney cartoon that ran from 1994 to 1996, but I don't count the 3rd season because the creator left the show and well...it went downhill from there). A comic came out that started off where season 2 began, ran for a year...and now it's stopped. U.U It's ran through Slave Labor Graphics (website: [link]). I just got Clan Building Volume 2 in the mail yesterday and read it. And I am SO SAD it ended! They FINALLY got some good artists who could draw WOMEN and EMOTIONS and it ends... And they teased us with Brooklyn's Time Dancer series at the end and cut us off just when we get introduced to Brooklyn's family. ::falls over::

That's my Gargoyles rant... if you like mythology/Shakespeare/Authurian legend~ you NEED to investigate Gargoyles. It has it all. YouTube the first 5 episodes (Awakening Parts 1 thru 5), you'll be hooked.

So, I finally heard back from the KC RenFest~ and I have a booth space there! It is in the guest booth, and is only for one of the weekends, but it's basically for me to try it out, yah know? And for them to try me out, as well. But yesh, I am excited! I've been told for years I need to get into the RenFest, and well, I've wanted to for years as well, I just didn't feel ready to submit and try until last year, and I am glad I was able to get in on my 2nd try of submitting.

If anyone lives in the Kansas City area, I will be at the RenFest the 2nd weekend, September 12th and 13th. My booth is near the front gate, and I'm going to work on a big sign that will say "Samantha Nowak Illustrations". I will have fantasy prints for sell, bookmarks, stickers, and my Enchanted Names (which if everything works out right, I will be fulfilling on site).

I have to say, 2008 honestly was a crappy year for me~ my husband was in Iraq for 5 months, I lost my job and basically wasn't sure WHAT I was going to do...it was filled with uncertainly, fear, and many crappy days. But I am SO happy and thankful that 2009 is turning out so GREAT between the RenFest, getting Adam B. Brave published, being able to do MY own artwork, and just feeling so good about life.

Love to everyone!!

Clubs I'm a part of:

Okay, so normal people write about how they are going on vacation BEFORE they go. Not me. ^_^* This is mostly due to me being forgetful in writing journals here~ tis all.

But yes, mom and I went on a vacation to Phoenix, AZ. Why? My mom grew up there during her middle and highschool years, and her BFF lives there. So we visited them most evenings and did dinner a lot. We also did a train ride together with her BFF and daughters through Verde Canyon (which is called the "little Grand Canyon").

The big trip that mom and I did was a bus trip up to the Grand Canyon. We stopped in Sedona to take some pictures from the Church of the Holy Cross (we is right across the street (basically) from the guy who discovered/created lasik surgery's house...it's...BIG). Then we stopped in Flagstaff for a short trip, then a shop on the Navajo reservation, and then up to the Grand Canyon. Mom and I signed up for a helicopter tour over the GC~ which I have to say, if you're going to see a giant hole in the ground, it's much cooler to be flying over said giant hole in the ground. ^^

The vacation was nice and relaxing. About 2 days before we were leaving I felt ready to come home and get back to work. ^^ Enough relaxing for me!

Oh yes, also, doing a float trip on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon is now on my "to do" list.

So, I'm getting excited. I finished writing and revising my story, Ylseria, which I always planned to turn into a comic some day. This week I have started drawing and inking pages, and the plan will be to debut it on [link] in September. Yeah, I know a ways away, but I need to get ahead of the game and rebuild the website in preparation for webcomics. And, well, originally we thought only my story Ylseria would be debuting on BSE (BittersweetEntertainment) in the very beginning. But...if things go right... we will have TWO comics starting up! My story, Ylseria, and Pretty Pretty Boy! I don't have many things in my gallery pertaining to that...but one of my latest deviations is the PPB transformation. It's all up in the air now, so I can't guarentee it until time gets closer...but I am excited...

Well, Joe got the basement and attic leaks fixed (or so we think, guess we'll find out in the next big storm!) however whilst in the attic Joe found something interesting...

So, we have this third bathroom in our house that we never use. It gets used to clean the birds cages, but that's it. During the spring time sometimes there is this "something dead and decaying" smell that comes from the bathroom. You can only smell it when you're IN the bathroom, and well...since the smell isn't always there and since we hardly use it, the smell has been a nuisance, but we always forget about it because it's not constant.

When Joe was in the attic I asked him to make his way to that side where said smell is coming from and just check it out, see what in the world is dead over there and how did it get in. Joe found several things...

A birds nest in the insulation (with eggs!) next to a pipe.

The pipe is our dryer pipe and SHOULD be connected to the side of the house so the heat and lint goes out.

It's not.

Instead this dryer pipe is laying right next to a shorter pipe that leads outside the house, this is the short pipe where the dryer pipe needs to be connected!!! Joe said from looking at it, it has NEVER been connected. It looked like the pipe needed to be cut a bit and then it could easily be connected. Thus, the conclusion is SOMEONE didn't finish their job.

So what does this mean?

For the past 3 years we've lived in the newly constructed house dryer lint has been sprayed on the wall/corner of the attic where the dryer pipe is pointed. The walls are COVERED! I'm not an expert on house codes and what not~ but Joe is sure that lint covered walls is a fire hazard.

So, we now know where the birds are coming from, they're getting in via that unconnected pipe. Joe's going to call the builders of this house (once he's back from TDY, he's better at conveying his anger in a civil tone than I am, I'd babble and probably feel bad and cry~ go me) and tell them to fix this ASAP. According to our building contract we have to give the builders 90 days to fix the issue and then we can contact a lawyer if nothing is done. I'd really rather they fix it, clean out the lint so we don't have to go to a lawyer.

Oh the joys of owning a house~

And yes, new art~ coming soon to an update near you!!

Bring leaks to our roof and mini rivers to the basement... ::glare:: I'm over exaggerating the "mini rivers", it hasn't been THAT bad since the first year we were in our house, however we're still constantly having to patch up a crack in the basement, cuz water keeps getting in. And the leeky roof... ::le sigh:: I noticed the wet spot on the ceiling above our bed and told it to the hubby. He crawled up into the attic and discovered two things:

A. Where the leek was coming from and possibly how to patch it
B. There is a bird (or birds, it was one Starling when he was up there) getting into the attic through some vents connected to the roof... in theory there should have been some mesh screens over the vents to keep the birds OUT, however, Joe and I are slowly realizing the company who built this house...took as many short cuts as they could...

Joe and I have learned many lessons about what to look for in the next time we buy a house. ::nods::

In other news, I know I haven't updated in awhile, but I do have artsies to show! In another day or two I'll get them organized and put them up for people to see and enjoy.

So, in July I'm planning on going to Tokyo in Tulsa and have an artist table there~ selling my wares. I created some anime fanart stickers and bookmarks for Naka-kon earlier this month and they did well. I want to expand my collection, so I am looking for suggestions on what anime characters YOU would want to see as a sticker or bookmark! I've done the inner scouts and most of the outer scouts from Sailor Moon (which I plan on finishing up the rest of the outer scouts for Tokyo in Tulsa), the Suzaku people that matter from Fushigi Yuugi (plan on doing some of the Seiryu peeps), five Naruto characters, and six Pokemon characters.

So, what characters from what anime(s) would you like to see as fan art you could buy at a con? List three, five, ten~ whatever! Just list the character's name and anime they are from. ^_^

And for those curious folks, these are some animes or games I'm considering doing fan art stuff for:

DBZ
FFVII
FFX and maybe some FFX2
Pretear
Loveless

Oh! And I just realized I reached 30K in pageviews! Weeee! Thank you guys!!!

And Naka-kon has now come and gone! This year it was at the Hyatt at Crown Center in KCMO and I must say, I love that venue. The room the vendors and artists were in was nice and big, and getting around that area of Kansas City is easy peasy and nice. This year was the first year I finally broke down, drew some anime fan art and sold it along with my Enchanted Names and fantasy pieces. I really did enjoy drawing all the chibi fanart and such~ I've just had this thing with drawing fanart ever since my Disney Princess's were stolen a loooooong time ago (but that's another long story we won't go into).

I brought the hubby with and he was REALLy enjoying himself. So much so he wants to cosplay next year! We've decided we're going to go as Ramna 1/2 characters~ he will be boy type Ramna and I will be girl type Ramna. I have basic sewing skills, so I figure I can find some patterns and alter them slightly to get what we need for their outfits, which are relatively easy. I did Miaka Yuki's red priestess outfit several years back for cosplay, so surely I can do Ramna's!

On another note... I want to cosplay as Lulu from FFX sometime too... After I've developed my sewing abilities that is...

And on another note~ I have leftover bookmarks and stickers from the con! So, if anyone is interested in buying some bookmarks or stickers from me, just note me and let me know what you're interested in! The stickers are the same characters as the bookmarks, just they are round-esque stickers for slapping on sketchbooks and the like. I can show those interested in stickers jpegs so they know what they are getting.

Prices for bookmarks: $2 each, or you can get 3 bookmarks for $5
Prices for stickers: $0.50 each, or you can get 5 stickers for $2

Shipping: If you're in the United States shipping will be $0.50, unless you plan on buying quite a bit, then I'll have to up it a little.
So, I haven't been around for a week or so now. This past week my husband and I had to travel to upper Michigan for a funeral. His grandma passed away in her sleep at the age of 86. She lived a long and happy life, and the funeral was nice. And we got to see a lot of relatives and a bunch of us 20somethings to 30somethings went sledding out on a hill on the farm. Many of us also came back with bruised bums, since we hadn't sled in many winters.

Also, yesterday was hubby and I's 4th wedding anniversary. Gosh, I can't believe how time flies! Seems like just yesterday he and I were arguing at the lunch room table and he was stealing my Nutrigrain bars and other varous lunch items.

So, the short story is I'm backed up on messages and watches and all that jazz. So I'm working on catching up. /nod

Hope everyone is doing well!!

www.samanthanowak.com

So, right now I have a lovely swollen mass on my right shin/ankle area, it feels like the size of a baseball. I did it this morning, whilst being a good green person and taking the recyclables to the curb for pick up...I bumped into an old exercise machine in the garage and it tipped, first hitting my car, then falling into my right shin and landing on my foot. I cursed and hobbled around and bit back tears of pain. And good lord~ my shin was swollen within 5 minutes!!!

And, since new years resolutions are the topic of choice in journals at this time, I figured I should add my two cents on the subject. ^_^ My new years resolutions:

1. Get into the KC Renn Fest~ I just sent in my submission today, so now it's cross my fingers, wait and hope I've impressed them enough as a new artists.
2. Finish my story this year, and if possible, start working on the graphic novel version by the end of this year
3. Continue to exercise daily and lose weight. The aerobic exercise I'm good with daily, I just need to get better at the weight training...
4. Continue to push myself artistically~ take up painting again, study more of the masters to apply their understanding of color, composition and such to my works.
5. Start a web comic. I've only talked about doing this FOR EV AH! I just seriously need to sit down and figure out what story and how often would I update it... etc etc etc...

Those are my main ones~ in no real particular order. I guess really the Renn Fest is now out of my control, its up to those in higher power~ AKA the Craft Committee and those who select new artisans into the Renn Fest.

So what about you all, anyone have any interesting New Years resolutions?

www.samanthanowak.com

"busy" is the key word me thinks. ^_^

I've also been making a physical change in my life~ over the course of being married for almost four years I have gained weight. *le sigh* A HORRIBLE amount of weight.
Wow. This year has flown by. And now, whenever I walk into a store there's a combination of Halloween/Thanksgiving/and I kid you not~ Christmas things for sale.

And now that the year is coming to a close~ or at least it feels like it! I'm already pondering next year and some goals I want to meet~ artistically. By the end of this year I want to revamp my BSE website (www.bittersweetentertainment.com) and launch a webcomic on it. That's right~ webcomic. ^_^ I have so many stories between me, my writer friend, and my husband~ and I want to bring them to life through comics/graphic novels. Since I am only one artist, it's going to take time, but I'm young yet, and have plenty of time to get the stories out for everyone. ^_^

Artistically~ what I also want to do are some more fine art pieces. Some oil paintings~ figure, animals (birds), and still lifes. And as I get back into oils, I'd like to start doing fantasy oil painting.

I also, really, really, REALLY want to be an artist at the Kansas City Ren-fest next year. I didn't make it in this year~ but it's a first come, first serve/get a booth service, and apparantely I didn't apply soon enough... so hopefully I can apply early enough this time to get in~ because...I just think that would be the most awesome experience ever for me. ^____^

Well, I think I've babbled enough for today about random things. ^^ Babbling is a good way to get things out of your head and get them more organized. At least that's how I feel. ^^ I'll be babbling about ideas I have in my head or problems I'm trying to resolve to my husband~ and all of a sudden I'll stop and go "Wait...I could do that and X and X and it would all work out!" and then walk away and leave my husband confused about what just happened. ^^ But he chalks it up to his "abstract random artist wife" so he deals with it. ^^

TTYL!

Gaia Art Contest: [link]

Commission Status: Closed
My Art Prints (you know you want 'em): [link]

Naps are great. Tea is lovely. And together, they're terrrrrrrrrrrifc!

Monday through Friday I have to get up at 6 AM to take Sasha, our almost 8 month old German Shepard mix, to Doggy Day Care. Yes, she spoiled. But we don't have a fenced in backyard because *technically* we don't have a backyard ::grumbles at the homeowners association about that debacle:: so Doggy Day Care is a great place for her to play all day and exert her puppy energy. She loves DDC anyways, she goes with her aunts~ Aunt Sandy and Aunt Budie (my parents dogs) and they're one big happy dog family! However, since I get up at 6 every morning, as the week goes on, it gets harder to get up! And naps...naps help they do.

And tea...tea is my new found friend. ^_^

Okay, so I didn't HAVE to do this Meme, but said if one felt compelled, to go ahead! So, after thinking of some random things...I'm going for it!

1. When I graduated high school I was Artist of the Year and held the Highest Math GPA of my class. Yeah, I'm a freak of nature~ I'm good at art, and gifted in math (though after highschool I focused on art, I don't remember much about Calc anymore! You don't use it...you lose it.)
2. I think I'm a confused left handed person... I'm a left handed golfer, left handed guitar player (when I attempted my mini musical career), left handed oriented EVERYTHING (and left footed soccer player)~ except that I write and draw with my right hand. My conspiracy theory is that back in kindergarden I either A. watched the teacher/kids pick up the pencils with their right hand, and followed the directions down to the exact hand, or B. the teacher shoving a pencil in my right hand and said go for it~ and I did
3. To this day, I will point with my left hand to the left and there is a dang good chance I will say "Turn right". I think it has to do with the whole confused about what side is dominant thing.
4. As a kid, my dad dared me to eat a pickled pig's feet, saying if I did it, he would make my brother do it. So I did it. Gross. Gross. Gross! My brother never did eat his pig foot. :-P
5. I dislike jello. I do not like the way it jiggles all the way down. It's like a wiggling worm, and that's just gross. Though not as gross as the pickled pig's foot.
6. People who don't use turn signals tick me off. People who don't use turn signals UNTIL they are in the middle of turning tick me off more. If you're turning, and THEN you put the signal on~ call me crazy, but I think I already know what you are in the process of doing!
7. Freshman year of college I bought a silver gargoyle ring from a jeweler who came to the school. I've worn the ring every day since then (besides a handful of days of forgetfulness) and it's become my little protective gargoyle ring.
8. I played soccer for about 10 years. When I was 13, I was on a co-ed team (AKA 18 boys and 1 girl, me)~ we were taking shots on goal and I went in for the kill...and totally smacked the coach's son in the FACE with the ball (why was he running in FRONT of the goal??? WHY???)!!! I had a crush on him at the time, so this was ubber embarrassing...not to mention my shot was so hard his lip started bleeding... ::falls over:: Did I mention I had a pretty good power shot with my left foot?

Gargoyles, as in the 1994-95 cartoon series by Disney created by Greg Weisman~ absolutely ROCKS! I just got issues #7 and #8 of the Slave Labor comics, being written by Greg, and the whole Clan Building arc is making me all giggly~ especially since 7 and 8 had so many old faces from the series that were in one or two eps, but you KNEW were important for later things.

So yes, Gargoyles RULE! I wish I could go to the Gathering of the Gargoyles convention this year, but it is just not going to happen. ::is bummed:: Hopefully NEXT year things will work out better.

And yes, if you have not gone out and bought DVDs of Season 1 or Season 2 Part 1 ~ DO IT!!! Season 2 Part 2 has not been put out yet ::is really really mad about this:: due to "low sales"...which considering Disney didn't do ANY marketing for Gargoyles, I'm not sure what they are complaining about... So, do yourself a favor and go buy one of THE best animated series EVER. That's right...I said it...
*This post is going to be long…you have been warned*

So, today marks my 1 week anniversary of being a full time freelancer. Something I was working my way towards, but this wasn’t how I was supposed to become one.

I was let go from my job last week. ::dum dum duuuuuuuum::

To understand the situation, I need to step back several months ago. Give some background info, yo. I was working at Grapevine Designs as a graphic designer (they called us “Landscapers” because all titles there have unique names, but we were graphic designers) 4 days a week~ that one day off using to pursue freelance stuff. In early March I spoke to my boss about the idea of reducing my hours to 3 days a week, except I would not do this without finding a replacement to fill in for the 2 days I was not there (there are two graphic designers in the art dept, and I didn’t want my co-worker to be alone for 2 WHOLE days, Grapevine is too busy for that), and the replacement would eventually take over the position when I left completely (you know, making it an easy phase out/phase in). Boss lady knew about my goals of becoming a freelancing artist, I didn’t hide that fact (I’m not sure if you could look at cube walls and go “Wow, you did all this artwork? So umm…why are you dropping logos onto bags again?&#148 Boss lady never said anything AGAINST the idea of cutting my hours (this is suppose to be a flexible family company anyways), and I went back to my business of being a graphic designer. In April we had a company meeting where boss lady (also owner of the company, it’s a small company with about 25 employees) gave out framed pictures of our new company logo. As she gave them out she said a little about the person she was giving them to~ when it came to my framed logo she said “And this is Sam, I hired her from her comics in the newspaper, what a stupid idea…”. That is not the EXACT wording, but “hired, newspaper, stupid idea” were all used. Needless to say I had a “WTF?” moment as she gave me the frame and pondered where the heck THAT came from? Also, in April I had been at Grapevine for one year~ it was time for my one year review and raise. But boss lady wouldn’t give me one! She kept avoiding me when I brought it up, giving out excuses that in my head I knew were BS, but you don’t call out BS against your boss. Oh yes, also at the meeting with the whole frame event~ the boss lady announced they would be hiring a Creative Director for the art dept. Coworker and I were confused about that one too~ she had not told us about it, and considering a Creative Director, in theory, would be our supervisor, we didn’t know why this idea wasn’t discussed with us at all.

You guys still reading this? Troopers. ^_~ The ending is coming I swear.

So, forward to last week~ Wednesday (the day I have off) an email is sent out that a Creative Director has been hired, she will start in June. Thursday I get back to work, see the email, talk to my coworker who says yeah, boss lady sat down with me to talk about her, she’ll probably call you into her office as well. At 4:45 in the afternoon boss lady calls me into her office…and the convo went a little like this:

Boss lady: So, you know we’ve hired a Creative DirectorÂ
Me: ::nods and smiles::
Boss lady: And we’re letting you goÂ
Me: ::heart plummets:: O_O

She then proceeds me to give me my last paycheck, my severance pay, tell me I was a great employee, no complaints, but the whole cutting hours thing wasn’t working out. Now, a month ago she BARELY hinted at the fact that me not being their all 5 days was becoming a problem~ and I told her if it became a BIG problem, come TALK TO ME so we could figure out a solution. She admitted to lying and having to cover up the fact that the “Creative Director” was “Sam’s Replacement”. So, then we went to my cube with a couple of boxes she had in her office, packed up my stuff, and walked me to my car. I drove away blaring the loudest angry music I had in my CD collection at the moment.

Now, at Grapevine, boss lady called us her “Grapes”. I never particularly liked being called a “Grape”, there was something unsettling about the idea of being “owned” by this word…I don’t like feeling “owned”. And seriously, if I’m going to be called any sort of fruit or veggie~ I wanna be a damn spicy Jalapeño. But that’s beside the point… I wasn’t a good “Grape”. I wasn’t going with the grand scheme of the “grapevine” and well…I got hacked off the “vine”.

I know why she did it; I wasn’t going to stay around forever and all that, so I wasn’t going to be an asset for the company. But I was upfront with her and my goals; she didn’t have to be all sneaky about it.

An...

Oiy. It's been a busy month. My husband and I acquired a puppy~ a 4 month old German Shepard mix from a rescue site. Her name is Sasha. Then about 2 weeks later, my husband left for a 4 1/2 month stay in Iraq for his job. He's not IN the army, but he works FOR the army, thus is an Army Civilian. I now await for my daily email from him so I know how's he's doing. The end of July can not come soon enough...

I've redesigned my personal website so the focus is on the collectable prints I offer. So if you're looking for some pretty fantasy art go check it out and support the arts! I also have Enchanted Names, customizable prints that are pretty darn cute.

[link]

Also continuing the comics~ trying to organize thoughts on stories and such. And still working at the graphic design job 4 days a week 8 hours a day... ::can not wait to not have to work there and focus on her own artwork:: Soon...hopefully very soon...

I've also been pondering taking commissions via DeviantArt. I haven't decided what I would offer yet...digital, traditional, perhaps both with different pricing... I still have to ponder and see. ^_^

Take care everyone. ^^

Halloween has come and gone, the day after Xmas music started playing on the radio~ which is annoying, I am not ready for Xmas music! By the time December comes I will be sick to death of Christmas music!! Good thing, I ignore those stations and will do so til...probably they play their normal stuff...I have my own Xmas music I can enjoy when I feel like it. ^^

It's a bit premature~ but in February Kansas City will have their anime convention~ Naka-kon. And I plan on having an artist table with another lovely artist: I plan on having limited edition prints, chibi stickers, and I am pondering doing chibi caricatures of people. If I have any leftover calendars (I make them as Xmas presents for friends and family) I will probably have a few of those lying around as well. ^_^ So, for anyone who lives in the KC area~ or anyone who plans on traveling to KC for this~ you can look for me! ^_^

Wow, a journal entry that's NOT a month or two after the previous one! Go me!

I'm happy. Why? Because I'm going part time at my job (I'm a graphic designer for a promotional product company). And why do I get to go part time? Because my freelancing jobs are going up and I'm finally at the point where I can cut some of the paycheck from the day job and give more time for the "night job". This is the first step to COMPLETELY being able to leave the 9 to 5 office world and have the ability to work from home, in my studio (well...right now it's more like a mass of art supplies and THINGS all around the house...the ACTUAL studio will probably not happen for another 4 years or so when hubby and I can move/build our own house). I'm so excited about the prospect! I've been daydreaming forever about being able to work at home and do my freelancing projects, and do my OWN projects, and continue to push my art abilities (I still feel like I have a LONG ways to go to get to "SUPREME GARGOYLEGODDESS ABILITY") ~ and it's hard to push the artist ability when working full time, freelancing, and all the other things that come with domestic married life. :-P

So, for the past 2 months I've been doing comics for the Kansas City Star's Preview section. And because of it I now have a new job. I am now a Graphic Designer for a women's owned company called Grapevine Design. The owner of the company saw my comics in the Star and contacted me to see if I would be willing to help them redesign their website with the use of my illustrative skills. While talking on the phone she mentioned a job opportunity~ which led to an interview, interview #2 and a job. I started April 2nd. I am both excited and nervous. Excited because this job is WAY more fun than my old job (mailroom clerk for an engineering firm, the comic I was doing for the Star, Another Day in Paradise, is very much inspired from life exeriences) and nervous because I haven't seriously done graphic design since college. And even back in college I pushed my graphic design projects to incorporate many illustrative elements. And I also hate to dissapoint people~ so I want to live up to Grapevine's expectations about me. I'll be less nervous and such once the whole newbie-ness goes away too. Being the newbie is annoying and sucks.

Oh yeah, and all those HD radio commercials they play on the radio~ they're annoying as heck.

Soooooo, today I woke up, was driving to work, and my father in law calls. "Congratulations!" he says, and I'm confuzzled to no end, because I have no clue what he is "congratulating" me for. And then he tells me my comic is in the Kansas City Star (big local paper here) and I go "WHAT?".

Backstory: I've been in talks with the editor of the KC Star to do some comics for the Preview section, which is a section they put out on Thursdays~ it has local music and art shows, and they have also started showing off local comic artists' works.

Now, when an artist does this for the Preview section you get 2 months to do comics (so one comic every Thursday, about 8 strips)~ I originally agreed to March and April. About 2 weeks ago the editor emailed me asking if February and March were still good, and I reminded him I was all good for March and APRIL. He wanted me to submit my first strip Jan 25~ which I thought "wow...that's ubber early, oh well...I'm almost done with it anyways..." and then come Thursday morning, February 1st, my comic is in the Star. ^^ It was a big surprise, it was a nice surprise. So, for the next 2 months you can follow the first tale of Another Day in Paradise. For everyone else~ I'll be posting the strips as they're published in the newspapre.

And also, I want to thank everyone for all the favs, watches, comments and notes! I promise I'll get to your comments and notes~ just give me a little time! Since Another Day in Paradise was moved up a month, that also means the deadlines for my strips have been confuzzled with. ^_^******

2007 should prove to be an interesting year... and hopefully a positive one for my art career. My attempt to make it happen. Right now I have a *regular job*, it's just to pay the bills. It's fairly boring, administrative stuff, surrounded by Geotechnical Engineers (some are amusing, like when one gets confuzzled by the copy machine and I have to come save them~ but at the end of the day, this is NOT the job nor environment I want to stay in). Come March are raises. If all goes well between my husband and I's raises, I will be going part time... Leaving more time for me to work on my art career. And hopefully by 2008's pay raises, I can quit completely...and soley do the art thing.

And there are some art possibilities already in the flow... I won't delve more into them until they actually come to fruitation. No need to excite anyone if they end up being duds. Though I'm hoping they won't... ::crosses fingers::

In other news, my birthday is only 10 days away! I'll be 24~ officially entering the realm of "mid-twenty-something-year-old". Crazy stuff that is. It seems like just yesterday I was in college dealing with finals, and last week I was in highschool helping Mary get that gummy art eraser out of her hair...
Well, it's the holiday season, and I'm thinking it would be nice to earn a little extra for all that shopping I'm going to have to do. O_O So, for a limited time, I'm taking up commissions. Specifically Chibi Commissions. I've done them in the past for people, making personalized chibis of themselves or their loved ones as surprise gifts and such.

Examples:
X
At ArtSeas Galleria I have limited edition prints for sale. They are 8x10, printed with archival ink on archival paper, signed and numbered by me, and include a certifcate of authenticity. I have 10 or so pieces in print form for sale over there. So go check it out! I've matted a few of the prints and hung them around my house, and I must say, I feel pretty snazzy about myself seeing how good they look behind a matt and frame! lol

So, my 1995 Chrysler Cirrus has now been replaced with a 2006 Chevy Malibu. XD I'm telling you, an 11 year jump in cars is crazy. The most spiffy thing on my Cirrus was cruise control, and now the Malibu has things like radio controls on my steering wheel, digital panel that shows what song is being played on the radio, what the outside temperature is, what direction I'm going, and my fav upgrade for the coming winter, butt warmers. ^^ Everyday I'm discovering what a new button does. So far no seat ejection button though...

Columbus Day...I must say is the silliest holiday we in America have (I'm assuming no other country celebrates it, right?). Well, okay, we really don't celebrate it...it's more like a freebie day off for government, schools, and banks. Since I'm part of none of those places, I DO get to go to work tomorrow. :-P
In other news, I'm *slowly* working with the local paper about getting a comic published in them. It wouldn't be a permanent thing, but every Thursday they have a special section where they display local artist's comic strips. They normally run for about 2 months, so about 8 or 9 strips. I've been working on a story, and so far everything I've been throwing at the editor keeps getting "looking good". So we shall see...I won't believe this is a successful venture until I have a copy of the paper with my strip in hand...

So, I finally decided to join Deviant. I'm a newb.

Since I'm new to Deviant, but not to art, a lot of the stuff I upload for awhile will be random artwork dating anywhere from last week to a couple of years ago. ^^

For any who may possible have that "I think I've seen her art somewhere..." I've been a part of the Elfwood community for over 4 years now, you may have seen me there. ^_~ I'm still a part of Elfwood, though not as active as I once was, but I'm still there. ^^
