Chewin' bubblegum and kickin ass since 1979.

There's a new art forum out for those of us who miss Sketch Tavern (and I know I'm not just speaking for myself when I say that).
Check it out!
[link]
Thanks, !

Features are still goin' on, so the next six people to respond will still be featured (and I have a feeling it'll be a while before all the slots are filled).

Yes!
Chewin' bubblegum and kickin ass since 1979.

As many know by now, the Conficker worm went live on April 1st, 2009. What was supposed to wreck millions of infected PCs worldwide really did about as much damage as the Y2K bug (or a mouse fart) did.

However, the last few days preparing for this potential catastrophe created more panic and annoyance to myself and my coworkers than the actual worm did. I can only wonder what goes on inside the heads of those that create such problems as computer viruses and spam. Are they just unemployable losers looking to rip the world off? Are they a bunch of anti-establishment cyberpunk wanna-bes who've seen The Matrix too many times? Whatever they may be, it seems to me like we are dealing with people who have absolutely no lives.

Though the Conficker worm hasn't done much yet, Microsoft has put a $250,000 bounty on the head of Conficker's creator. Personally, had I the information leading to his arrest I'd rat him out for free just out of sheer contempt.

Seriously, all you wanna-be hackers, code-crackers, slackers-- get out of your parents' basement, get a real job and GET A LIFE!

Remember, folks. Post these rules.
* 2. Each tagged person must post 8 things about themselves on their journal.
* 3. At the end, you have to choose and tag 8 people and post their icons on the same journal.
* 4. Go to their pages and send a message saying you tagged them.
* 5. No tag-backs

1. I'm really not a fan of today's music. Maybe I'm too old to understand it.

2. Between ninjas and pirates, I can't pick a side since both kick ass.

3. I get annoyed rather easily. Just ask my family, friends and co-workers.

4. Though I am a registered Democrat, I am somewhat conservative on certain issues (like crime). I guess I'm more of a libertarian.

5. On that thought, I used to consider Dennis Miller [link] a neo-conservative suck-up ever since he took sides with President Dumb-$#!+. Though I still wish he would pull his nose out of Dubya's ass, Barbra Streisand and her fellow limousine-liberals piss me off just as much (if not more).

6. I'll watch bad movies just so I can say that they suck. By "bad" movies, I don't mean "so bad, it's good" (I actually LIKE those). I'm talking about true wastes of celluloid, like "You Got Served", "Leonard, Part 6" and "Battlefield Earth".

7. I don't follow technology too easily. For example, I have yet to own a Bluetooth or any other hands-free communication device. When it comes to such things, I'm worried whether or not I'm throwing my money away when purchasing such things.

8. I need to get out more.

I now tag...

Remember, folks.
Chewin' bubblegum and kickin' ass since 1979.

I'm sure a lot of you folks out there know this song: [link]

I always had a hunch that there was more to the song than those immortal lyrics, and now I've discovered the first part.
[link]

So, now we've got parts one and three of the classic holiday song. I think I remember hearing part two at some point in my youth (I probably just made it up myself).

Now, when we add all parts together, I think we have a true classic.

And it goes a little something like this:

Crashing through the roof,
In a one-horse open tree,
Busting out I go
Laughing all the WEEEEEE!

Batman's in the park,
Robin's in the hall,
The Joker's in the bathroom
peeing on the wall!

Jingle Bells, Batman smells.
Robin laid an egg.
The Batmobile lost its wheel.
The Joker got away. HEY!

Jingle Bells, Batman smells.
Robin laid an egg.
The Batmobile lost its wheel.
The Joker got awaaaaaaaaay!

5000 PAGEVIEWS!!!

How's that for a Christmas gift? That deserves a celebratory drawing of some sort.

Now, I'll have a happy New Year as well!
Happy Holidays, everyone!

Remember, folks. No matter where you go, there you are.

Chewin' bubblegum and kickin' ass since 1979.

Oddest thing happened today. I was surfing the net while on my lunchbreak when I stumbled upon the blog site novus.liber [link]. There I discovered a somewhat disturbing image [link]

Those familiar with my work should easily recognize my Artist Pirate Flag (my AVATAR, for cryin' out loud) design at the bottom of the page.

This puts me in a very weird place. I mean, it looks like a harmless blog (which might even count as free publicity), but whoever put the image there didn't even bother to ask me if it was okay to do so. Nor did this person give me credit for it. At the same time, I'm worried that my work will be associated with something shady.

Does this count as theft? Should I go after this site? Or should I just be happy that someone liked my art enough to put it in their blog?

UPDATE: Okay, I've let the first one slide. Now someone else has used my work (same one). This time, I stumbled upon a Belgian "t-shirts store" website called Manteela.be. Back in September they apparently held a Jolly Roger Design Contest in celebration of International Talk Like a Pirate Day (or so I interpreted with my limited understanding of French). If you scroll down to the headline "Un fameux Butin!" and click on the phrase "plein de variations" you will see one of three images. One of them is my Artist's Pirate Flag.

Here's the link: [link]

Though I don't speak a word of French other that "Qui a coute le fromage?" (I think that's how it's written), I didn't find my work in their Collections page, so I can probably assume that these people are on the level.

Oh well. More free publicity for me, I guess.
Maybe I should thank them for putting my stuff out there.

Remember, folks. No matter where you go, there you are.

I have been tagged by the irrepressible DocG [link].

The Rules:
1-post these rules
2-each person tagged must post 8 random(... hopefully interesting) facts about themselves
3-tags should write a blogpost of these facts
4- at the end of the post 8 more bloggers are tagged and named
5-go to their blog and leave a comment telling them they're tagged

The Facts:
1. I have prehensile toes, which allows me to open doors and pick up certain objects with my feet.
2. I'm so bad at sports, some of the Special Ed kids at my school were often picked for teams before me. Then again, some of these guys were decent athletes, so I shouldn't take it TOO hard.
3. When I was about 4 years old, I used to have nightmares about Lou Ferrigno (as The Incredible Hulk). Just goes to show how much of a wuss I am.
4. Speaking of The Hulk, of all the things that helped me get over said fear, it was an episode of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.
5. My dad claims I convinced him to quit smoking.
6. I probably drink WAY too much coffee than I should. Oddly enough, I didn't really start until I went to college. Now I see little kids hanging out at Starbucks and it freaks me out.
7. I tend to annoy my friends with my uncanny knack for voice impersonations. Just don't as me to talk like Lisa Simpson (that's been impossible since puberty kicked in).
8. According to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator [link] (among other Carl Jung Archetype derivatives), I am an INTJ [link]

I Now Tag:
1. VagabondX [link]
Excerpt taken from LightBombMike's [link] journal

Hey Everyone!

We got the order numbers in for Cereal and Pajamas, and we came up short of what we needed to cover printing costs.

But, we are not done fighting to make this happen. I know MANY of you ordered, and we don't want to let you down. We are all pitching together to cover the costs, but it is a sizeable amount.

So what can you do to help us out? We need to sell another 100 copies before the middle of August.

- If you haven't already ordered you can pre-order it here: [link]

- If you have pre-ordered, tell all your friends to do so as well. Show them this preview link: [link]

- If you have pre-ordered, as have all your friends, then hit any of us up for commissions.

I am ACTIVELY looking for commissions now, with all proceeds going directly to the printing of this book. So I'm going to be doing $10 sketches. You give me a character and $10 dollars, and you will get back an original sketch.

If you will be at Chicago, you can pick it up there along with a copy of the book. If you won't be there, I will mail it to you.

Also, I am willing to sell the originals to any of the Eat the Pattersons pages, so feel free to make me an offer for those.

All of us in the book poured our souls into each of our stories. This was our chance to shine, and we did just that. Now we just want to be able to share that with all of you.

So check out the preview of the book: [link] tell all your friends, and help donate anything and everything you can to make this happen.

Thank you all for your support!

One good thing about having my birthday fall on the Fourth is that few people would dare question my patriotism. Then again, I recently found out that Geraldo Rivera also was born on this day so many years ago (which is a slight source of shame for me).
Now I shall prepare myself for the chaos that will come with the fireworks. Every year, my neighborhood alone turns into something out of a Rambo movie. Oh, well. It only happens once a year, so I might as well make the most of it.
My dad just got over his illness and my brother is still getting over his. My boss has been coughing like crazy all week. I guess it's now my turn to be sick.

Of all the times to catch a throat cold, I had to catch it on St. Patrick's Day. I was planning on heading down to Maizekid74's [link] Sketchbook Session over at his place. I was looking forward to meeting some of my fellow deviants in person and maybe knocking back a few brewskis. So what if it's 50 miles from where I live? On the other hand, I don't want to get any of my fellow deviants sick or make myself worse. It's a real shame because from what I've heard about previous sessions, it's sure to be off the hook.

Well, I might not be able to make it there in person. But I'm already there in spirit.

Serious Artists must read this

Found this in AmericanNinjaX's [link] journal

I'm sure any serious artist who's ever been on Craigslist can relate to this article...

Article says: "Every day, there are more and more Craigs List posts seeking "artists" for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what they're NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are "seeking artists", let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? .none?

More than likely, you don't know any. Otherwise, you wouldn't be posting on craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the "opportunity" to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him "a few bucks" for "materials". What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?

If you answered "yes" to ANY of the above, you're obviously insane. If you answered "no", then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me. why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As
such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than
professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;

1. It is not a "great opportunity" for an artist to have his work seen on your car/'zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a "great opportunity" for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a "student" or "beginner" in an attempt to get work for free. It's ignorant and insulting. They may be "students", but that does not mean they don't deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a "student" once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether it's one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their "portfolio". They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. It's not compensation. It's their right, and it's a given.

4. Stop thinking that you're giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someone who lives in the real world, and as such, will pay them. There are far more jobs needing these skills than there are people who possess these skills.

5. Students DO need "experience". But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the "experience" they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmother's house when they were seventeen?

If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. The only experience they will get doing free work for you is a lesson learned in what kinds of scrubs they should not lower themselves to deal with.

6. (This one is FOR the artists out there, please pay attention.) Some will ask you to "submit work for consideration". They may even be posing as some sort of "contest". These are almost always scams. They will take the work submitted by many artists seeking to win the "contest", or be "chosen" for the gig, and find what they like most...

Well folks, Tuesday's Election Day and I'm absolutely dreading it. Don't get me wrong. I will still vote as my vote MIGHT make a difference. I simply don't know which side to stick by anymore.

I've become more libertarian (though still somewhat left-leaning) as of late after looking at both sides of the political spectrum with equal horror. The left can be just as full of itself as the right can be. For the most part, I've decided that I will simply look at the issues before taking a side. I'm sure that in the past that I was so desperate to be part of a gang (whether conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat) that I didn't even bother to read the issue before making up my mind. Not anymore...

Living in California, I also get to vote for governor (what fun). I'm pretty sure that
Ah-nuld will still be the Governator for another term, I think I'll go ahead and vote for Phil Angelides amyway. I made the mistake of not voting during California's 2003 recall election, thinking that it was all a sick joke (not so far-fetched considering that Ah-nuld ran along with Gary Coleman and Larry Flint). And look what it got us: Conan the Republican is now the Governator of KAHLIFOANIA!

But I digress. I'm gonna go ahead and cut this little rant short and hope I never have to hear the word KAHLIFOANIA ever again.

Happy voting. everyone.
