I'm doing the research and preparing to take comissions. I will probably only take a few at a time, at least at first. Every little bit of extra money helps, so if you'd like an illustration from me, think about a comission. This is not to say that trades and requests are completly out of the picture; but you can bank on comissions having extra time and attention to detail because, well, you're paying for it!

Hello my dear, dear friends, old aquaintances, and new watchers,

I've been very dodgy about updating this year; some of you might have discerned what I'm up to from hints here and there, and I think that my loyal watchers deserve a serious update.

Currently, I am residing in Wales, a country west of England, studying for my MA in Arthurian Literautre. My studies will culminate in September, when I will return home and attend a friend's wedding in Alaska in October. Then I'll go back to Florida to finish preparations for my own wedding, which will hopefully be executed in early January.

Yes! I'm getting married. *dies* This time last year, I would have never seen that coming. My sweetheart is Welsh, of Irish and English descent, a serious Catholic like me, and about a year and a half younger (hurray for younger men!). We're not sure as of yet where we'll end up. It really depends on where the work is availible for us.

My hope is to own a tablet and computer coloring program by this time next year. And *takes deep breath* I'm considering opening to comissions some time this following year. This is something I've always been really hesitant about because I felt that I needed to be very sure of the quality of my art before I start letting people pay for it. And I'm still not confident that it's fair for me to "sell" it.

The reason I'm thinking about coming to it now is because, like most young couples, John and I will be starting out with little; jobs are in short supply, and since I have a skill, I would love to be able to provide even a tiny bit for us with that skill. At any rate, it's something that may be availible from me over the next year, if anyone is interested.

Last but not least, I heartily thank

for his thoughtful donation of a subscription to me. He is a paragon of the the dA community and a generous patron of Sailor Moon fanart. His original characters, Charity and Harmony, are probably the most popular of Chibiusa's brood of future children! May they live long and prosper!

I'm leaving my home country in T minus 2 days. I can't say for sure that I'll have access to a scanner, at least not for the first week.

Even if I do get a scanner, I'll be busy cranking out my Master's thesis, so I'm afraid that the fertile period of mass production is over - for now. But I will always draw. And I'm very interested to see how this turn in my life will influnece my art output.

Thanks to the contributions of everybody last entry, I think we obtained a pretty comprehensive guide of things one should know when handling contstructive criticism.

1) Giving constructive criticism is an art form in itself. If you are not a pro, critique with caution.

2) Con. crit. is often opinion. If you're going to critique, please keep this in mind. It also couldn't hurt to use the phrases "I think" and "I feel" as opposed to coming on strong with "This is wrong because . . ."

3) Instead of simply saying what's wrong, include what is good about the picture. You may even mention how the artist can improve, as long as it is a helpful suggestion and not an instruction (teachers, of course, excluded). I believe this focuses on the positive aspect of improvment rather than error.

4) Be polite. This should be obvious, but not all children grow up with manners at the dinner table.

5) If you're not confident with your own ability, be careful giving critique unless it is specifically asked for. It's the old story of learning to help ourselves before we help others.

6) You will know, if you are open, when a critique is true. It will resonate with you and give you the desire to improve and keep drawing, not want to give up!

I brought up my latest poll in preparation for this entry - not that I have a great big revelation on the subject. In fact, I am one of the two so far who chose "I'm not sure."

Regarding constructive criticism, how much is pure opinion? How does one decide that the critique relates and apply it? Is it a matter of opinion? Does it depend on what is being critiqued?

I have had great difficulty on the subject. Some days I feel very helpful and point out things that might be improved upon - always being sure to suggest how to improve so that it's not just plain, fruitless criticism - on other days I look at something that doesn't quite sit with me, then decline to mention it because my style differs drasticly and perhaps I have no place to say what does and doesn't work for a particular style or genre.

Now in my observations there is one type of constructive criticism in which all parties are agreed. Unfortunatly, it is also the most useless. I mean the kind of critique where the observer points out an error of which the artist is already aware. So if the critiquer notes something that the artist has already observed, it seems like a waste of effort. It might possibly even annoy the artist, who is very well aware of his or her weaknesses, and this, I suppose, is why we have the option to TURN OFF CRITIQUE.

Some people end up critiquing a brick wall - that is, someone who seems to appeal for critique but who will not accept any suggestion that something is incorrect in his or her work. This can be frustrating for those who are trying to help. I feel it is also important to remember that although the artist might really want to improve, it is hard to hear negativity, no matter how gently padded, regarding something one has created and is so much a part of. Regardless, this kind of critique exchange seems pointless, and I feel it should be avoided.

Now on the other hand, if artists disregard critique because they feel that their art should be whatever comes out as is, they aren't too far from the revolutionists, who broke traditions by making things look however they wished.

Is a neck too long? Or is it merely a reflection of Manerism? Is the nose too far to the side? Or is this something evolved? What if someone continually draws his figures with unnatural angles, like Picasso? Is the body disproportionate, or is there a repetition and exaggeration in the figures because that's just the way the artist draws.

This is the hardship of constructive criticism.

I admired an artist many years ago who made her figures grow exeedingly larger as they went down the length of the body, so that the calves were very nearly the largest things on the figure. It looked strange and disproportionate to the delicacy of the shoulders, arms, and waist. Then the movie Lilo and Stitch came out, and low and behold - those same striking and disproportionate legs!

And what about eastern iconography? I personally see nothing aestheticly pleasing in the dead-brown skin, hollow faces, lank bodies, and monkey-curled fingers - yet these are held dear by so many people as religious devotionals and communicators of supernatural reality.

Plenty of people dislike anime - the eyes of the figures are enlarged to the state of the grotesque. Their bodies are pinched and stretched and swollen beyond realism. Their heads are so large that were they converted to real space, their necks would fail to hold them up!

I've seen recognized, celebrated artists that scribble their images, not to mention those who just scribble (or fling, like Pollock).

As I hone my own style, I find increasingly that I do not wish to critique at all. I'd much rather meet the artist where he or she stands, guide them through interactive discussion, not in the direction of my craft, but in the direction in which they have, in their own development, started out on their own.

That's too scribbly becomes The lines are tentative and whisping.

Your colors aren't blended enough becomes Your vision of the natural shapes in color and shadow make this work interesting.

Your hands and feet are disproportionatly small to the rest of the figure becomes Your style renders hands as small and delicate, which suits the nature of them as flexible, precise tools.

Regarding the writer's quote on art and pretentiousness in my previous journal entry, I believe

had the most astute explanation.

It's also important to note that [Chesterton's] talking about a certain kind of talking about art a great deal. As one who wrote books on George Frederick Watts and William Blake, he could be said to talk about art a great deal. What he means is the sort of pretentious art talk that was prevalent in "Bohemian" circles in his day. The same sort of talk, though with different idioms, still exists today.

The main thing is he always said art should be a hobby, not an identity. Ideally every man would do art, and none would try to stand out by saying "I am an artist." He often pointed out that art is something that separates humanity from animals. So it shouldn't be, "I make art because I am an artist," but "I make art because I am a human being. Because of that I do many other things as well." Remember he also said "what is worth doing is worth doing badly." Meaning that we shouldn't leave things like making music and art to pretentious professionals. ^_^

I recently found a pretty illustration on dA that I thought worthy of adding to my collections, so that I could have it at my fingertips always and come back to look at it and admire it often. I always read the author's comments. I feel as if the viewing experience is incomplete without taking in what the artist him or herself has to say about it. This particular artist's comments concluded with a line more or less forbidding people to favorite. The artist wanted people to comment instead if they liked the illustration.

So I did neither.

I feel it is a bit rude and ungrateful to insist that people who admire one's work only admire it in a way suitable to the artist. It is like declining a gift because it is not the gift you wanted. We may prefer a certain type of appreciation, but to refuse a type of appreciation because it is not what we would have liked is snobbish and far from humble.

Any person is allowed to feel however he or she wishes on the subject of my favoriting his or her art. On that same note, I am just as free to refuse to give any sort of appreciation to a work of art when the artist is too proud too accept my appreciation.

There is another very tallented artist whose skills I admire. This person is in the habit of posting art and then explaining in the comments how he or she is NOT going to explain anything about it, so don't ask, and shut up, kthnxbai. Then this person goes on to say something cute like, "Enjoy!"

Now, at one point I seriously considered unsubscribing from the artist for this nonsense. Simply put, I do not appreciate being harangued for looking at and admiring someone's art, even less so for being jumped on in expectation of doing something that I have not yet had the chance to do, much less think about doing. If the artist really preferred people not to ask about a subject, he or she might not put the work of art, the spark of the sensitive subject, on display! At the very least, he or she could politely ask the viewers and commentors not to ask.

How do I feel, then, regarding my own so-called "art"? I appreciate thoughtful comments that point out things that I otherwise wouldn't have noticed myself. I am flattered by favorites because that means someone thought my little picture worthy of keeping easily at his or her disposal. I am glad that if someone simply says a "oo, pretty," or "nice" that he or she put some effort forward in exchange for a bit of pleasure I granted in my drawing. I am even grateful to those who take the time to look at a picture and neither favorite nor comment!

In short, I am not so self-entitled to spurn this great compliment. In such a way, I expect the same decent respect from other artists. And may they be genius or amateur, common ettiquite figures very highly in the probability of my ever wanting to look at your art again.

In closing, I want to mention that had not the first artist banned me from favoriting the artwork, it is likely it would have recieved a thoughtful and genuine comment from me as well.

I don't know, in case anybody cares.

I find myself a rather interesting person, as far as activites go.

I am:

* Reading Emma for the first time. It's all right, but I am not a Jane Austen fan. I'm much more of a masculine reader when it comes down to substance. I want to read swords, wars, and empires, not so much dinner conversations and matchmaking. I realize this makes me a masculine reader/writer in the Jungian sense, but I prefer to have both plot and characterization in my stories.

Anyway, I am reading it to be able to tutor my favorite pupil. It helps to know the material before I teach it.

* Learning Cymraeg (Welsh). The hardest language I've dabbled in yet, as it has virtually no ties to Germanic or Romance languages. It is rewarding because it is so pretty and lilting. Also, I hope to become more or less fluent because I'll be living in Wales come the fall. Well, we'll see . . .

* Procrastinating on Sailor Moon X because the episode is a bit crawling. I want to write about the fuku upgrades, the fill-in-the-blank histories of the mysterious new characters, and introduce new ones, but I have to get through the steady series development first. * Applying for loans and scholarships. This is not as simple as it sounds. I go around in circles trying to figure my father's tax reports for the last fiscal year. Plus, I don't understand all the economic lingo and am afraid to make anything final for fear of selling my soul (or entire future income).

Yes, I am an idiot as far as practical, non-scholarly or artistic pursuits are concerned.

* I should crack open T.H. White's The Once and Future King to get a head start on my studies for the fall. I have no idea what to expect from a UK institution, not to mention a postgraduate programme. I am determined to be professional and studious.

This is a picture of the odangoed ones, Usagi, Chibi-Usa, and my original character Zakuro (whose identity is unknown at present).

I am very happy with this lineart, but I drew it on standard computer paper, and to color it would mean loosing a lot of the details.

I would be tickled to see someone else's coloring of this, and there are so many tallented people around here I had to ask.

Why is this a contest?

I want to show my thanks by returning the favor with a gift art of the colorer's choice, only I won't be able to make one for a ton of people, only a few. So I thought I'd let people vote on their favorite colored version and make little gift arts for the top three.

Also, it appears my scanner is good and broken. Oxymoron? Yes. Untrue? No. Trouble with computers lengthen to epic eras around my home. I will try to be on the ball and as active as possible about getting it fixed but it could be . . . a while.

Particularly, I've been doing a lot of fanart because of an unprecidented abundance of authorial fanfic activity. The majority of these newly uploaded OCs belong to my otaku Sailor Moon universe.

It occured to me one day that I love drawing figures, fantastic, decorative, and even allegoracal. But I rarely give them a place to live. The figures themselves are central, and if they have an enviornment, it is simply a tool used to highlight the figure itself (usually in an impossible or uncomfortable pose). This is very like an icon.

Icons are usually religious one-dimensional pieces of art depicting a sacred person. They are not drawn to life. On the contrary, the figures are usually pretty vulgar and if they allowed to come to life right off the canvas, would be hardly recognizable as human beings.

The point of the icon is not to capture what is seen with the eye but what is not seen. To give an attitude, idea, expression, or feeling. To make the viewer have a certain experience of the art.

I don't know if my scribblings are quite good enough to move someone like that. But I definently believe that the beauty in them is in showing what isn't necessarily real.
