Whew!

Busy around here lately. Moving tends to do that, and while I'm not moving just yet I will be soon, in October. Lots of things to do before then of course, packing and other preparations.

I've been trying to motivate myself to do more art, especially continuing to study figure drawing / character design. I often get busy or distracted, or just don't feel like it, but I'm really going to try and step it up here when I have the time.

I often post my sketches to my blog, [link] , just because it's way faster than posting a sketch here. Once I get a packet of like 5 pieces I think I'll probably make a sketch dump here.

So please, if your interested check out the blog and some of my sketches! If you have any advice feel free to leave me some pointers, always useful.

Now I do, and can work to improve on that for the next image.

So yeah, I should probably update this more often.

Anyways, neat stuff, been improving with my sketch studies and such, however slowly. It feels like its coming together for me a bit more now though, so I am excited. I'll be posting up that stuff in a sketch dump here soon.

I also just snapped some really neat shots of direct sunlight passing through a glass of apple juice. I noticed it as I set my glass down and poured the juice just a few minutes ago - it fanned out into these awesome gold rings and wisps of white light. I thought that was pretty cool, so I grabbed a few shots - I'll post up a couple here. Perhaps some clever artists will find use for them, or someone will just get a kick out of it. I know I did.

That's all for now, but I'm going to try and be more active here + do more art. It's getting towards time I stopped studying and started just practicing by doing I think.

We shall see...

Well, been awhile since I've posted anything. I've been studying figure drawing and anatomy more since I last started, using some great books I've found. I got some criticism on my Undead Warlord that, at first irritated me, but later I found quite valuable.

Namely:

1) lack of unified color - I've been looking at a lot of other paintings and trying to decern why the color palette works, and trying to really think about color more before i even begin

2) better understanding of human anatomy - guy's a skeleton sure, but still - gotta know the rules before you break them! Plus I would like to do characters that are of the living at some point, so it helps.

3) better use of lighting - I had a very hard light source, but then proceeded to put lots of in-shadow highlights - not a good idea. So I've studied light more and I feel I have abit better grasp on when to make the shadows more hard or soft, and when to hold back on the 'back lighting' to not overwhelm and confuse the lighting scheme.

4) better use of detail - I sometimes - ok often over detail things, in an effort to make it "a masterpiece" or something crazy. Yeah I think masterpieces for individual artists decide when they get made, not us. Overall though, I've realized that too much detail is just as bad as too little - it removes focus from the image and can confuse the viewer, actually making it LESS interesting to look at. Hard to know when too much is too much, or too little - but I think practice will help me there.

So, I have been pondering these things, and practicing using them better. I hope to have some neat stuff to post at a later date, but I've been busy with less interesting things, such as being sick with a nasty cold.

***Edit***

I setup a blog to use as a sketch dump and outlet for general ramblings. Check it out if your interested!

[link]

Yes it is true, I do still reside within the sphere of the living. Haven't posted here in a long time, mostly because I've been rather busy.

I took a lot of time in the past several months to really focus on improving my art techniques - specifically in 2D work. I really feel I've learned a lot, and my work has improved immensely.

Even more importantly, I really am having fun and enjoying doing art more than I ever have before. It's been really great to just sit down and draw or paint anything I wish, without any need to mentally prepare, boost my confidence, or anything like that first. Having the self confidence to know that it's ok if art isn't instantly perfect, and that if I just keep hammering away at it, I'll get it right eventually.

I actually think that is perhaps the most important thing I have gained in recent months.

Well I've gotten started on my graphic design portfolio redo project. I've started off with a series of old-style designs, two of which are up right now in the gallery. I'm really enjoying doing these. They were inspired by a conversation me and my girlfriend had a couple days ago about how it would be cool to have a series of pictures centering around old world themes. I really liked this concept, so I started off with The Astrolabe. Initially it was going to be centered around a compass, but I couldn't find a compass picture I really liked. I did however find this awesome picture of an astrolabe, so I just went with it. The second, The Privateers, was because I wanted something blue themed and was in a very Pirates of The Caribbean mood. So I figured I'd do a sort of British Navy / Privateers looking theme with that one.

My Next one will likely be green themed and I'm not sure what about. I know I want to do one called The Pirates, and center it around either several large gold coins in one corner, or a skull of some sort. That one will likely be the same red theme as The Astrolabe, so will be a cool way to finish out the set. Atleast, for now! I rather like this kind of thing, its fun, so I might do more later on.

Till next time!

Well, haven't posted much lately, been very busy IRL. However, I recently got a chance to scan some of my sketch work and upload it here. Hope everyone enjoys it!

Some other stuff just thought I'd gab about:

The awesome deviant ( has notified me of some events happening in Alaska that I too would like to speak out against. If you go over to [link] , you'll find out about what is apparently an air hunting program. Sound strange? Yeah, I thought so too. Basically, they fly low an slow in either prop planes or choppers and pick off animals, mostly wolves. This, is not only weird, but just plain wrong IMHO.

It's one thing to actually hunt an animal, guns are rather unsporting I think (use a bow man! at least give the thing a chance - and actually EAT it will you? ), but if nothing else they have a chance to survive. But what good are the animal's natural instincts, keen sense of smell, hearing, and all that, verses an what amounts to an air-borne sniper? I mean, you may as well just take AH-64 Apaches and blanket the woods with machine gun and rocket fire.

In short, it's not sporting, its not humane, and it just plain doesn't seem right to me. If you feel the same, go sign the petition to stop this crazy nonsense.

In lighter news, Company of Heroes Opposing fronts is out, and is AWESOME! Go Relic! More kickin WWII RTS goodness from the guys in Vancouver! If you like deep, tactical RTS games that have both an awesome single player campeign AND a great multiplayer scene, definitely check this stuff out.

Also, the final expansion / chapter / thingie for GuildWars - Eye of the North, is out as well. It's very cool I think, and I'm enjoying the especially awesome scenery. No new elites to hunt for this time, but there are some decent new skills for all classes, and the dungeons are great so far.

Thats about it, I'll hopefully have more stuff to post within a month or so!
