I have been selected to be an Anthro Educator. Behold: [link]

I tend to bum around the IAmAnthro chat in some of my spare time, and I love giving in-depth critiques. I figure, while I'm at it, I should get involved in this Educator program so at least more people can know to look for me if they need a good critique.

Critiques are the life-blood of progress. Be tough and open, because sensitivity and stubbornness can lead you to protecting your errors. I'm not a mean critic, but sometimes people take it too personally when it is only to their benefit (I have too, in the past, and it really is irrational in hindsight.)

I'm keeping the Feature Tree up longer still due to traffic 'round here, and the fact that it's not complete yet.

------

I am branching off from 's Feature tree!

First 10 people to comment in this journal will get featured. gets the first one, however, so just 9. I will post links to 3 pictures from your galleries. The only stipulation is that you must do the same thing in your journal, with 10 people Featured as well. I don't have to be in said list, but gosh that would be swell... I'm all for getting known out there a bit more. ^_^

I figure this'll be simple and fun! --except that I'll be counting to Ten using trinary, because counting regularly is for chumps!

1.
[link]
[link]
[link]

2.
[link]
[link]
[link]

10.
[link]
[link]
[link]

11.
[link]
[link]
[link]

12.
[link]
[link]
[link]

20.
[link]
[link]
[link]

21.
[link]
[link]
[link]

22.
100.
101.

I've begun SuperEpic, the comic of epic proportions! Four pages are completed so far, though the fourth took much longer than the rest.

The plan: 1 page per week. I've yet to set a specific update day, but I will iron that out as I go. Once I find a day I seem to gravitate towards, I will stick with it; I could see likely Friday.

I'm also considerationating the purchase of a subscription. I'm using DA enough lately that I could only benefit from one. The only thing stopping me, however, is that I don't want to have to spend a whole bunch of time with user page setup, and new graphics to go with it. I will inevitably get to all of that stuff regardless, these issues are just minor delays. Of key importance is getting my comic up, all the rest is lesser.

"...before our imaginations run wild!"

Okay, I've been watching a ton of South Park. That show really isn't slowing down; newer episodes are so well beyond old ones, unlike a lot of shows that cling to their prime season formulas and start crapping-out with lack of originality. (I can't say I dislike The Simpsons now, but I have no interest in watching new episodes.)

In other news, I've begun drawing so much that people will wish I wasn't drawing so much! I hope this means I'll start having stuff uploaded before my drawing kicks wears down (and maybe that it doesn't wear down at all).

I've also picked up spriting again. My programmer friend wants to pick up making an RPG again, and I'm the main/only artist on deck. It's going slowly so far, just because I've been drawing and getting squished by work/classes at the same time.

All of the sudden there's all these journal entries about the potential "Orphan Works Legislation" which will "kill art in the US."

Assuming it is to 'make our private art freely usable by anyone' is the most ridiculous conclusion to jump to.

*ahem*

"During 2005, the Copyright Office studied issues raised by “orphan works”— copyrighted works whose owners may be impossible to identify and locate. Concerns had been raised that the uncertainty surrounding ownership of such works might needlessly discourage subsequent creators and users from incorporating such works in new creative efforts, or from making such works available to the public."

This was from a government website, and note, it was the second link in my google search. A little research goes a long way. But then again.. the very moment I read the name "Orphan Works", and understood it applied to art, I saw very clearly its purpose. The word "DOOOOM!" is not present.

That quote tells the entire purpose of it, and it is a very smart one. Among many many other situations, photo restoring/retouching has always had a large problem when the original photographer is unknown or dead. It is a pretty absurd reason to be legally unable to repair the picture just because you can't speak to the dead for permission.

The only issue to be concerned about is what effect it may have on artists' copyright registration. Don't worry though, it's a huge concern for the Government and Copyright Offices too.. which is precisely why it hasn't been passed yet. They are trying NOT to fuck us over, while at the same time give us free reign over dated art that is sitting in limbo (stuff that no one has been able to claim).

Last night I had a very strange and amazing dream involving many aspects in the nature of the afterlife. Some things are more vivid than others, and occasionally it went off in random different directions before continuing on its main direction. I want it typed down somewhere, so I'm typing it up here. Here goes:

I was searching through a small abandoned town for someone, with the aid of several other people who seemed unknown to me. Apparently, we had to finish the search before the sun went down; there was evil about this town, in the vein of vampires and such. I had a brief stint of being a werewolf, fighting undead creatures, in a very Action RPG style. (This supernatural stuff had a place (sorta) but was practically a whole other dream itself, so I'd almost rather have left it out of the story altogether.)

At the back of the town, just behind the last building, extended towering cliffs of rock. We thought the search had found nothing, until I put my arm through what seemed like a dead-end of rock. It felt like there was no rock there at all, like it was just a visual trick. This apparently was what the others were looking for, and we all stepped through the rock together.

We stepped on to a bridge; behind us it was connected to a mainland, close enough to easily be in view. In front of us was an island; we were nearly there, standing at about 3/4 the way across the bridge. The others informed me that we had passed into Hell. It wasn't quite a terrible Hell, like other stories say... it was slow and peaceful, terrible mainly in lacking anything interesting to do. The person we were looking for was held at a prison camp on the island, waiting for a judgment of punishment. The problem was, she wasn't supposed to be here... she was kidnapped and taken through to Hell the same way we stepped into it.

We all entered the prison camp. It had no security. I suppose the idea was if you ran.. where would you run to? I recall finding a book called "Scottish Prisons", with a lot of someone's scribble notes between the margins. The others wished to wait for the right opportunity to leave (with the girl), but they told me the secret to reach the living world right then. Curious, and wanting to be sure it worked, I tested it. The 3/4 part of the bridge where we had appeared is linked with the living world, and I would normally walk right past it and continue through Hell. The trick was to wear the grey-ish prison clothes and wrap myself with something like wrapping paper, and then cross the point like that. It was a weak attempt at symbolism, implying that whatever you wear in the living world, underneath it all you still have already been to Hell (or something like that). Apparently it was made as a secret for people who were required to leave Hell for some reason or another.

So I stepped through the point and back into the living world. Visually, I was still on the bridge, looking out at the mainland end, but I felt the change, and this was very clearly the living world (the prison camp was not there behind me anymore).

I forget most of what happened now, or it just wasn't particularly eventful. All I can really say is that I found the way back into Hell again, found that person we were there to save, and we both crossed back into the living world again. I didn't wish to go between the realms a third time, because I recalled a warning: The trick to escape Hell was made as an exception, a way to fix mistakes rather than just be an open path. The more people who know about it, and the more it is used, the less likely it will work at all.

I think the dream ended with me bragging to my friends (in dream) about how I traveled to Hell and back.

What an awesome dream! The story could have used quite a bit of work, but it was very visually interesting for me. I think I'll try to remember what I learned in it.. y'know, just in case. = P

Just watched Transformers Animated over Youtube (and various other places, to get the better video quality watching each part). Frankly, I was really impressed. Its definitely the best season short of the one that spawned it all.

The biggest complaint I see against it is about the style. Its a step away from G1 and all the rest, which look back to G1 in style themselves. I think the style change was very much needed, however. The proportions of all the characters have a very North American flair to them... they are practically caricatures, and thats what NA cartoons have always been awesome at! ..Instead of robots who could easily have interchangeable personalities, they all look somewhat like their individual personality already.
My friend has some beef with the style as well, and a short conversation about it brought up a whole new point too. I told him that it really brings back an American feel to it, away from old G1 and all the Japanese series' that mimicked it. He replied, "Well they were all Japanese to begin with." That, right there, says the point indirectly. A lot of people don't seem to recognize that G1 was American made! (Its an easy mistake, I had to look it up to make sure myself) Its not a big deal, but there's plenty of anime enthusiasts who downplay this continents' contributions to animation without properly understanding it. We make amazing stuff here. Often.

The new style is a smart improvement, despite all the fans who want to cling to the old style for some silly reason. The thing about the original G1 design style is that G1 was already made over 20 years ago and has not ceased to exist within that time. If you want to see the G1 style, go watch G1 again.

Now.. Sari is cute. Really cute. The human character is almost always such a tool in Transformers, but Sari is something else. I've never seen a cartoon with a cute little girl character who hasn't annoyed me in some way or another; I expected Sari to annoy me but she certainly didn't. I can't explain how they pulled it off, but she's one of the characters I would watch the show to see! She's sorta the perfect embodiment of little girl vulnerability and human spirit/ingenuity. And she's believable in all the ways that count.

The writing for it is fantastic! It doesn't take more than 5 minutes to get a great feel of each character's personality, and they keep developing.. with well-placed humour. The fact that Starscream, alone, thrashes the whole autobot team (and nearly kills Optimus), provides an actual sense of danger. And the bit at the end -which was seamlessly built up to- sets the whole Earth up for one hell of an impending shit-storm! Scru the crappy uninspired ideas like Pokécons (I mean Minicons..), and Optimus always saving the day (cuz he's the only one who can shoot lasers accurately).. this one drives a much smarter plot!

Spongebob makes a good Starscream. This is also surprising.

Wow, I'm so slow at things.

I still have comicky stuffs flowing through my head, but I still need to buckle down and get some done. I feel bad that I haven't done a Broke Clock in a while, but it was an extra that required scheduled timing to complete so it had to go in favour of more important stuffs. It isn't dead, mind you, Broke Clock is just hanging out in the closet in my mind for a bit. Its just been a combination of University class work, my job, and laziness to do anything outside of those.

On that note however, the paintings I've done for class are coming home and I will likely have a picture of each to put in my gallery within the next few days. I had combined cubism and impressionism into an unholy union that threatens the very foundation of art.. and the world! I didn't get as many done as I should have and wanted too, but the Prof was still asking, "Painting isn't your major, is it? Why not!?"

In the past year I've really come a long way in understanding the structure behind fine art; what makes art art, rather than just drawings. An old drawing prof always said that art (to separate it from illustration) must have content, and that content is defined as meaning beyond the overt subject matter. So if you were trying to get across a feeling of anger, you would need to do something much deeper than drawing a guy looking mad or writing the words "I am angry". (That would actually be a hard one to pull off.. I envision one way would be that whatever is drawn in whatever style would require lines and colours that leave the viewer with imposing feelings of confusion when they look at it.)

I'm gonna end this with a brilliant quote by Jackson Pollock. It really stuck with me after I heard it. Its as true for painting as it is any other art form:
"It doesn't matter how the paint is put on, as long as something is said." -Jackson Pollock

I would like to begin with definitions of psychogeography and locative media.

Psychogoegraphy: "The study of the precise effects of geographical setting, consciously managed or not, acting directly on the mood and behaviour of the individual." (http://www.surrey.ac.uk/~pss1su/lecturenotes/documents/definitions.html)

Locative Media: media of communication bound to a location. They are digital media applied to real places and thus triggering real social interactions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locative_media)

I originally began this psychogeography research for with psychogeographic drawings in mind. I still intend to look at some of those, but they are the least of the interesting things I have found.

First off, I found a work by Gordon Savicic, called Music for What. What is done in this project is a GPS device is attached to the end of a fan blade, and it is spun around at high speeds. It displays the location of the device on the planet, and the speed at which it is traveling. However, it appears to cap it's recorded speed at 8km/h before dropping in recorded speed while the fan is still accelerating and going faster. This would seem to be due to the limitations of information transfer speed between the satellite and GPS receiver. I've found their description of what this was intended to accomplish to be a bit confusing, personally. What I've gathered from it is that it is obviously not a scientific test, but a test of technological limitations, and a display of the problems in it's perception and our reliance upon such perceptions.

The next one I found was a work by Aram Bartholl, called Maps. In this work, he turns digital information into physical information by creating a mock marker based from Google maps. He makes a large red marker to the corresponding location he was pointed to when looking up a place on Google maps.

Here is a website of projects by Aram Bartholl. Two projects (of similar scope) that I found fascinating are Tagging and Plazemark. The images/icons made in both of these projects contain actual data that can be decoded. In "Tagging", there is a pixel code similar to barcode technology (called "Semacode") which can be decoded with use of a standard camera phone. The code used in "Plazemark" is called "Shotcode". With a cell phone camera, and the correct software, the information in the images within either project grant access to internet website locations. These projects blur the gap between digital data and physical reality by making them one in the same. It is like Google Maps in reverse, a real world map that shows the way to a digital location.

At this location is a large collection of GPS drawings. There's a criticism of GPS drawing that the allure of using this technique is simply "because we can". I agree with that criticism, but I would go on to say that "because we can" is a good enough excuse to do most things. It turns real locations into digital information into a picture to look at; it's drawing, but with layers underneath that reach out to time and space. Some drawings are shoddy, and some are complex, but it is less about the lines than it is about the "how" and "where" of the lines.

This entry has been a compilation of various researched information over the course of several days. It's been fascinating stuff, and has given me plenty of ideas. Some of the more technologically constructed works, like "Music for What" and "Tagging/Plazemark", are beyond me in terms of my ability to do them. I think I need to be a bit more of a physicist or engineer to go in a direction like those.

Jubilations!
I have ironed out my final project idea, or as much of it as I can before I actually begin.

Situated Storytelling- I found this website, which is a conceptual art project to create a "revisioning" of the Great San Fransisco Earthquake of 1906. Figuring out the steps they took may shed some light on the steps I will have to take in my project. On the other hand, what I have in mind will require "gross exaggerations" rather than facts.

What is the idea swirling around in my brainmeats? Well it's simple: a situated storytelling of an journey to various locations in Regina, Saskatchewan. I will travel around with a GPS device, taking pictures and drawing sketches. The photos will have some darkroom manipulation, making them more difficult to understand, and the sketches will be creative takes on buildings/landmarks. I'll have a story writeup with each set of sketch, photo, GPS coordinates, and GPS point plotted map, that will be along a highly exaggerated story. There will be enough grains of truth within that people will understand if they picked up a GPS device and visited the coordinates themselves, but otherwise I will make it seem like a bunch of bull.

I had to get that out. Now, I require more research into this. I may have to go through a lot of blogs, which will be a major pain.

Okay. My final project in my Intermedia class this semester, I have narrowed down to a GPS related psychogeographical art project. I'm going to use my journal here to keep track of my research somewhat.

I started off without much of a clue. I need to get my hands on some GPS technology and figure out how to transfer the information over to a computer. I'm pretty confident that will be a minor thing to work out, depending on the GPS.

There's a ton of different kinds of mobile art, and it uses ideas that are pretty fascinating. I'll need to narrow down my idea, somewhat. It's apparently very easy to find blogs on this sort of stuff, but it's not worth wading through them all for small bits of relevant material.

I found Glowlab, as an interesting website for contemporary art. From there I could a specific website dealing with an exhibition of Cellphone art (and other mobile technology-related art. ie: GPS), Contemporary Museum.
