Yeah, trust me, even though I was frustrated with the fifth page (taking on some tough angles) I would have continued to do it, buuuut...

I received information that my college portfolio was actually not quite good enough to get me any scholarship money for the college of my choice, and I need some if I plan to attend (which I do) so I actually had to stop working on that in order to get my appeal portfolio in gear.

So the uploads from now on for awhile will be either sketches/doodles/quickies, or concepts, ideas, or medium tests for portfolio pieces.

FMA remake's rockin' it out

Or is it?

The point of the remake is to basically make an anime that follows the manga, or so it is currently shaping up to be, even though the first fan-service packed episode never happened in the manga... ever.

My impressions on the show can be split into its visual aspects, audio aspects, and story aspects.

Visually, the animation (the moving of the characters) is high-quality, and the fight scene in the first episode on top of the ice wave was cool... Until Isaac fell off. I facepalmed at the unimaginative animation there. Anyhow, while the movement of the characters is top-notch, the drawings themselves seem less stunning. The lines aren't as well drawn, and I cannot STAND that stupid "Lines in the hair are yellow!! " shit. Proportion also seems to vary too much, and I mean in a bad, unprofessional way, not in a funny, chibi way. Armstrong isn't as intimidatingly MASSIVE in the episode as he is in the original series, or the manga. It's purely average visually, which I suppose I can stand.

Audio-wise, the music is good, and I loved the first FMA's music. The voices? I like them all (It's a good thing they got the same actors to reprise the Elrics, it would suck without it. Even though the whole first episode was fan service, when I first heard the voices again even I was like "OMG AWESOME") EXCEPT... Except. Mustang's. It's so similar it's almost hard to miss, but it's missing that authoritative and staccato -presence- that the original mustang had. The fact that his eyes are also too prominent (a thing I'm noticing in most of the animation, period. It's annoying.) may contribute. I'm on the fence on Hawkeye and Winry - we'll see.

Story-wise, the first episode was HORRID - it was purely fanservice. Thus, I'm going to pretend it didn't happen. Everything was rushed and crazy and scatter-brained. There's a reason the manga and the original series started with the Lior incident. It's the perfect beginning to a story - intruiging, with a hint of mystery, introducing many, many themes that play out through the rest of the story, and framing the main characters very well. When the first serious prominent lines out of Ed's mouth are him eerily describing the human body and venerating science in his cocky slouch in a church, you really feel the gut of the character. That's missing in this new series. Now, since I already KNOW the character, I'm not missing out, but anyone who watched this first would be. The second episode was also rushed, and I feel that their backstory should not be revealed this much until later... It's just like when you get to know a person. You see who they are through their actions now, and later they tell you their past, and their hopes for the future. It's very personal - when you meet a character like that in a story, they seem more real.

I'm currently watching the third episode, where they finally get to Lior. We'll see how they handle it.

As a final note, I'm not an anime or manga-hater, I like BOTH storylines, I think the first anime was a resounding success, and I keep up with the manga as well. I hope this anime isn't run into the ground by shoddy visuals or writing.

An analysis of pageview accumulation time brings up the following -

Dec 6, 2005 - August 28, 2007 - 1K pageviews
August 28, 2007 - Dec 1, 2007 - 2K pageviews

So approximately:

19 months - 1K pageviews
4 months - 2K pageviews

This is nearly a 5x increase in pageview accumulation. Excellent. I will not have to unleash my badger upon DA society for neglecting to view my artwork.

Sexy, no? Yes, I purposefully moved it off the area I'm working on so you can't see what I'm working on. XP

It's really really awesome, making panels and messin' with em is super easy, and the pen simulation totally beats the crap out of photoshop. Plus, it has tons and TONS of screentones and it's really easy to use em, scratch em, whatever you want.

Only drawback is its hard to color, but I have photoshop for that.

So yeah, you'll be seeing a comic from me soon. ^^

Anyway- As it says in that deviation, I do have something to say about breaking 1K.

Mostly it's about how I've improved since I joined DA and how DA has affected me. You know, everyone does it, so I might as well get it out of the way, eh?

So, that said, I've improved heavily since I joined DA. I mean, just look at some of those sketches way back in the deep corners of my gallery. I have to say that DA helped me so much along the way. I got some criticism and exposure here, and it's really helped me. But more than any comments given on my art, the thing that has helped me the most to improve is looking at better artists than myself. When I've got that goal to work towards, I get better so much quicker.

I'd like to give special thanks, therefore, to all the uber-awesome artists I watch. (gts, pulyx, furan-san, transfuse, all the people at udon, etc) Even though they'll probably never see this, I don't care and I'll thank them anyway.

I'd also like to thank all the people who watch me, look at and comment on my stuff, you're awesome, I couldn't really do much here without ya.

So yeah, DA is awesome. To hell with myspace. -shakes fist-

So I've been wanting to do a big comic project for some time now, basically a comic translation of my LoZ fan fic trilogy (Because it just doens't have the impact I want when it's in words), of which the first book (Pretty crappily written imo, but it was awhile ago) is up on legendofzelda.com. (Site I mod at, check it out, it's awesome)

I've tried to start but not alot of it has impressed me, but I think I'm just gonna go ahead and do it. Just like when I started the written trilogy, it just got better as time went along since I learned stuff during the process. So instead of waiting until I'm better at drawing, I just said "eff it" and I'm gonna just do it, I think it'll be good for me.

I can't tell you when to expect the first chapter, (I'm doin it manga style, Volumes and Chapters) but I'm starting work on it.

Any other projects I'm doing are for now postponed (Naruto or WoW stuff that I've started on namely) until I feel like finishing them.

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I enjoyed the movie. I liked what they did with Mary Jane, Peter, and Harry. Sure, it wasn't just like the comic, but I liked it. The spontaneous memory loss was a bit contrived, but it worked out well in the end I think.

I'd never really read or seen Sandman in the original comic/cartoon, so I don't know what he was supposed to be like. He was alright, but his end also just felt a bit too contrived and happy love love. It wasn't bad per se, but they could have done better.

And thus we come to the real important part of the movie:

Venom.

What did I think? I dunno, I didn't like the way Brock looked/spoke. And the spiky hair? Nah. He was always a bit older than Pete in the original, and more buff. But at least his personality was right. The symbiote was cool, the way they did it, and the shriek sounded badass. But I don't think Brock's voice changed enough when the symbiote covered his face. Still sounded too human. Another thing about Venom is that he's always been better than Spidey capabilties-wise, and also good at outplaying him because he knows how he thinks.

Maybe it's just because Venom didn't have much screentime, but I think they could have given him more character. Extend the movie half an hour (Yeah, god forbid, whatever, ti makes the movie better) and it would have been much better in that regard.

As for Venom's looks, he was pretty badass, I was satisfied with that.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, I just think they could have done some things better.

1. I'm bored
2. Two people died last night at my school

One of them was a girl who took her own life. I didn't know her (I knew of her, but we never met) and I'm not particularly mortified, but the entire incident just got me thinking about suicide, depression, etc..

I figured I wanted to share my views on the subject here. If anybody cares about my opinion, cool. If not, whatevah. XD

Well in my opinion, just like many others, suicide is never the way to go. why end your own life when there's so many things you can do? Imagine what kind of a person that girl could have been if she had had a positive frame of mind or if a friend had come along side her at a critical moment.

I'm not sure of the cause of the suicide, but the most common is depression. Now, I don't have a condition like depression, and I try to keep myself always in a positive mindset, but you can't always do so. I do have friends who have dealt with depression though, and they're very strong people. As my friend always tells me, and what I believe to be true, depression is nothing but a state of mind. Sure, there may be medications, but it's all in the brain.

I guess the point is to not be depressed. Now everyone's going to say "Wow, easier said than done, Rune." True. But it's doable. Especially if you have friends and family who really care about you. If you can confide in them, they can build you up. Even if you don't have any friends and your family is filled with jackasses, you can always keep yourself in a positive frame of mind. Do what you love, just don't wallow in your own sorrow. Yes, it's not easy, but by god it's way better than suicide.

Now everything I've said has probably been said, reiterated, mocked, reaffirmed, rehashed, crapped out, eaten back up, and said once again, but it still means something. Hope someone gets something out of my brain dump. ;3

P.S. If my journal is messed up, then it's cause I'm a noob at using it. =O
