It's a toss-up between the Happy Box (a tiny plastic box covered in 60's hippie designs and housing a yellow wooden happy face) and the card Jenn just sent me, the envelope of which bears the image of a be-kilted and muscular anthro horse flexing a bicep and wondering, "Where's my steed?"

It's a Cutest Dog Competition! And just for a little background...Marla, the dogs' owner, is an old family friend who loves dachsunds. These current 2 are Oscar (for Oscar Meyer weiners) and Vienna (Vienna sausages) and they're dressed as Scrooge and Tiny Tim in the photo! I'd dearly love for Marla to win the grand prize ($1,000,000!!!) because it would be such a great help to her--she owns a ballet studio here in Brooklyn, and nowadays every business is struggling, including dance. I have many friends who attend the studio, including my little sister. In addition, Marla is the sweetest lady you will ever meet, she always has a smile on her face. She loves the arts and animals and even volunteers at a shelter for abandoned dogs.

Anyway, I HAS a job now! My uncle works at this law firm and they happened to need a new administrative assistant. So I am working there part-time and will (hopefully) make enough moneys to promote my artwork. That is, if I can find time to do any. I was in a bit of a mental slump for a while after graduating. It's hard to balance real life and one's creative interests. Sometimes I feel like the only thing that will make me happy is to think about my stories/projects. Maybe it's about having some measure of control in an imaginary world when one doesn't have any in real life. Or maybe it really is just escapism. ??

In real life, however, my friend Jenn is getting married! I'm the maid of honor and my sister is a bridesmaid. I'm really excited. We got Grecian-style dresses--mine is chocolate brown--and the wedding is going to be the weirdest, coolest thing ever to happen. EVAR. So that, for one, is a happy real-life event. Pictures posted here? Of course. September 27.

I get ideas for my stories/characters in some very odd ways. I get my best ideas through joking around with my sister (most 3ofS characters' personalities were created though inside jokes) or things that just enter my head randomly. For instance, my character Neon did not have a name for a while. I ran everything I could think of through my head and nothing seemed to fit. Then one night, just as I was falling asleep, I sat up and said, "Of course! His name is Neon!"

The same thing sort of happened yesterday. I've been having trouble for about 5 years trying to properly design Hermes (from my Greek myth retelling). Avia, the main character, went through a few changes and I finally settled on a look about 2 years ago (though she has mostly retained her original basic appearance). Hermes, however, was a challenge because he's a god. Have you ever tried drawing someone who was perfectly beautiful out of your head? It never works! They ALWAYS come out looking generic. Every pic of Hermes was okay. Never great. Certainly never good-looking enough. I had found gorgeous actors/actresses to reference the other gods/goddesses from, but I could not find anyone who was my Hermes.

I had Britt and my other sister Arianna searching yesterday for an appropriate actor. I couldn't think of one myself because they are more aware of the cute mens. They looked and looked, showed me pictures of a shirtless Jack Nicholson eating hero sandwiches, and the like. No success. I gave up and figured as well as I could not draw Hermes, I can watch a movie. We got 27 Dresses because I felt like a romantic comedy.

James Marsden (Cyclops in X-Men) is in it. The moment he walked on the screen (big blue eyes, manly jawline, slightly crooked smile) I looked at Britt and said, "Of course." Don't know why we didn't think of him. Perfect. Now I might be able to draw my Hermes after all. Duh. He has just the look I wanted.

Three of Swords is coming along. We've 2 books finished, but since I am still working on illustrations, the first one probably won't be released till next summer. Hopefully. But I should have more 3ofS up soon.

My Greek mythology retelling--the novel--should be finished within the year as well. THEN the grueling process of editing. In the meantime as you can see I have begun a nice little series of Olympians done in Mucha-esque style...if I finish, it will be the first intended series I've actually completed since eighth grade, when I did a horrendous lineup of MAT furry gals dressed in wedding gowns I copied from bridal magazines. Apollo is next (I won't attempt my dear Hermes until I find a decent reference photo for how he ought to look).

By the by.........I DO commissions. If anyone's interested. They'd probably be quite cheap...I have about $14 to my name right now so any little bit would help. Let's say $10 for a finished black-and-white pencil drawing of a single character, no background, and go from there, k? If anyone wants. *shrug*

We have decided to do the new Three of Swords illustrations differently--no more 14"x17" ink-and-digitals, they are now 8 1/2"x11" and done completely in pencil, which gives them a more old-timey feel...the covers might be colorized though. I will post them as soon as I finish the first two. When all 24 are complete for Vol. I, after a bit more editing my sister and I will likely be releasing the book on Lulu.com, for about $15-$20...I would have preferred it to be about $10 but the production costs bring it up a bit. Anyway if anyone's interested I'll update the information here.

I'd better take off, my prints have a deadline to be turned in! Hopefully I will get around to scanning/posting a lot of new stuff...sketches and things, not too much finished work yet. Keep watching!

There are a lot of new pictures coming (I hope). Some feedback on the comics would be helpful, ladies and gents...this is the first time they're going public, and next year (DUN DUN DUN) Deadvein Alley begins. From the beginning. Yes. I should have had an easy week coming up because some of my classes are cancelled, but of course one of my teachers had to go and veto that by giving an assignment that pushes the limits of stupidity. A life-size papier mache bust of Arnold Schwarzeneggar. Yup. I've never done papier mache before so I've got to get to it. Stupid, stupid. I wonder briefly how this is even going to make a difference at the end of the year when I try to get a job in comics, but I won't think about it anymore. That's a dangerous road.

I also want to try some fan art. I LOVE good fan art of my favorite characters more than anything (*Sam & Dean from Supernatural, Lupin & Tonks, anyone from Twilight but especially Jasper Cullen, Mr. Tumnus, random awesome movie characters*), but I rarely do it myself! I always feel worried that maybe I won't like how it comes out and then my favorite character will be forever tarnished! Somehow I don't worry about tarnishing my own characters (much). Recently we decided to unearth the thing, and...wow. Does it need WORK. My characters spent their time doing little besides angstily emo-ranting and going shirtless (the males anyway), and Jen just had SO MANY characters, 40% of whom she cared little about, and we often partook of each of these problems in turn.

Well, it was time for a change. The biggest shift is that they are no longer furries. This was a decision that I was loath to make for a very long time, mostly for nostalgia's sake but also because I was still insecure about drawing humans. But practice has made better, and the furry thing was becoming a hindrance because of the way the M.A.T. world operates--I have seen furries work in many, many stories (look at Brian Jacques' Redwall series for a notable example, as well as the hundreds of privately-owned furry characters), but it wasn't working for us and Jen expressed her desire to change them to humans. That said, we also had to downsize--only the most expressive characters have been kept, those characters who developed personalities and desires and lives. Extraneous "fillers" were discarded, of which there were many (i.e., Zephyra's 12-sibling family, all of whom had names and appeared in scenes where each felt the need to say something...these scenes were long and tedious and often writer's block-inducing). And the drama has been upped...we're not as timid as we once were and now things can really SUCK for everyone.

It's so fun to torture characters.

So there you have it. I should be uploading a lot more stuff relating to this project...it's still called M.A.T. for now, until we find a better name. Ugh.

I'm planning lots of new pictures from both Greek myth and Deadvein Alley (figures...I always start to get good ideas when it's almost time to go back to school and I won't have time anymore). In the meantime I will soon have some little Supernatural and Greek myth doodles here as well. I am in the middle of a Hades-and-Persephone retelling along with my big novel. Perhaps I'll put some of that up.

I start senior year in only 13 days! Please help by commenting and critiquing and even suggesting ideas for new pics--I'm going to need new inspiration. (My usual method of 'inspiration' involves perusing other people's pictures AND spending hours in DeviantArt's fanart section looking at Harry Potter and Twilight and Supernatural stuff...it's loads of fun but wastes much time! I need some new material!)

I'm really on a Greek mythology kick right now...I'm trying to get my story finished before September, and then planning on starting DA (EDIT: Deadvein Alley) officially as a graphic novel when I graduate next year. I'm hoping that everything comes together for me at some point. Senior portfolio has me almost worried about creating enough good pieces...we'll see how that goes.

Any artists who might read this: How do you find the time to do artwork? How long does one pic usually take you? And for those of you who are also writers--how to juggle the two? I'm barely surviving!!!

Bleh...must run to rehearsal now. Singing difficult choral music also takes up so much time...not to mention getting a job.....



EDIT: If you like Gothic Romance art, I found this really cool artist on Aethereality, named Victoria Frances. Her website is in Spanish only right now, so I couldn't read anything. But her work is really good.

I am working on a polyptych with all the major Greek gods and goddesses. So far I have four done in pencil...I want to ink them and color them in Photoshop, which shouldn't take VERY long. But mostly I've been writing Only Skin Deep, which is my Greek myth retelling (the first of several I plan to do). I take a lot of liberties in it which I'm sure many people will hate, but I care not at all. It makes me happy.

Sona would make a better professor than Silence (he's too quiet); she would probably teach nursing or anatomy classes, being a doctor.

02) Do you think 2 is hot? How hot?
Hermes is extremely hot; he has to be, being a Greek god. I guess about as hot as can be…11 on a scale of 1-10. Very cute and athletic and blue eyes and everything.

03) 12 sends 8 on a mission. What is it, and does it succeed?
Shrike doesn’t have much need for a guy like Donovan to do her bidding, but since he’s a spy, she might use him to look into the people who want to kill her. He would succeed probably if he had time to figure out his options and gather information.

04) What is or would be 9's favourite book?
Neon doesn’t have the imagination for a novel of any sort. He might like V for Vendetta the graphic novel, though, because he’s kind of a conspiracy theorist sometimes.

05) Would it make more sense for 2 to swear at 6, or the other way around?
It would make more sense for Sona to swear at Hermes, because she would if she got mad enough. Hermes doesn’t get mad easily, but if he did, he would have other options beside swearing, because he’s technically more powerful than Sona.

06) For some reason, 5 is looking for a roommate. Should s/he share a studio apartment with 9 or with 10?
Benedict should definitely share an apartment with Neon instead of Avia. Avia would hate him intensely, and he would find her so annoying he might kill her. Neon on the other hand has a lot in common with Benedict—tattoos, piercings, substance abuse—plus they would respect each other.

07) 2, 7 and 12 have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss?
Hermes, Shudder, and Shrike would have to go someplace ritzy because that’s the only sort of place Shudder would put up with (the other two would eat pretty much anything). Again, Shudder would be too much of a stiffly-stifferson to talk to people he thought less mature; he’d be looking at his watch. Hermes and Shrike would actually get along pretty much, talking about relationship issues and how silly their significant others are, in spite of how much they adore them.

08) 3 challenges 10 to a duel. What happens?
Sprint would kick Avia’s butt. End of story. She's much faster and her teeth are MUCH sharper....

09) If 1 stole 8's most precious possession, how would s/he get it back?
If Larkin stole Donovan’s signet ring (his only remaining article from home), he would walk up to her and snatch it back. She wouldn’t really care.

10) Suggest a title for a story in which 7 and 12 both attain what they most desire.
If Shudder and Shrike each attain what they most desire, it would be called “The End” because that’s what I guess happens at the end of DA! (Sometime!)

11) What kind of plot device would you use if you wanted 4 and 1 to work together?
If Eros and Larkin were to work together, it would be a plan for Eros to get Larkin’s friend Lita a boyfriend so Lita would stop hitting on every guy she sees.

12) If 7 visited you for the weekend, how would you get along?
Shudder would feel weird staying at my house…but he probably wouldn’t like me. In fact he probably wouldn’t notice me. We’d leave each other alone. Unless of course he decided to snack on me.

13) If you could command 3 to perform any one task or service for you, what would it be?
I would have Sprint run to another country and buy me something cool.

14) Does anyone on your friends list write or draw 11?
Several people have drawn Silence, and two other people have written about him.

15) If 2 had to choose sides between 4 and 5, which would it be?
If Hermes had to choose sides between Eros and Benedict, he’d probably pick Eros just because he’s his nephew, and he knows him better. Even if they don’t get along.

16) What might 10 shout while charging into battle?
Avia would not charge into battle. She’d run in the other direction, screaming at the top of her lungs.

17) If you chose a song to represent 8, which song would you choose?
The song “Charm Attack” by Leona Naess always makes me think of Donovan, if only because he’s a shameless womanizer.
