Name: Ihsan Al-khateeb
Born in: Baghdad, 1949

Summary: (Well it's extremely hard to find info on Iraqi artists..but i found a few things).

Ihsan studied in Baghdad, and received his Bachelor of fine arts in 1973. Later he completed Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts (2001) & Master of Fine Arts (2003) in the University of Auckland, New Zealand. (anyone see him there? i didn't ).
Throughout his 25 years of experience, Ihsan held many exhibitions and recieved many awards. You can check them all here [link] . I think he now lived in the UAE ..anyway, check out the rest of his drawing on his website [link]

*Place & Date of Birth: Al-Najaf, Iraq - 1944

*Summary of his life: Hassan Massoudy grew up in a traditional Iraqi society, characterised by strong religious beliefs, a high sense of solidarity and a keenness for festive gatherings.
As a youngster, in this town where all images were prohibited, he fulfilled his passion for art by making drawings and calligraphies while investing all his energy to get paper and pigments. In 1961 he left for Baghdad and started working as an apprentice for various calligraphers.The unfolding political events and ensuing dictatorship prevented from his dream of studying art, so he left for France in 1969.
He got to the "Ecole des Beaux-Arts" of Paris where he first worked on figurative painting, and to pay for his studies, he was doing headlines in calligraphy for Arabic magazines. In 1972, Hassan created the show "Arabesque" with the actor Guy Jacquet joined a few years later by the musician Fawzy Al Aiedy. Arabesque was a public performance combining music and poetry together with calligraphies being performed and projected on a large screen. They did many performances across France and Europe over a period of thirteen years. Later he put together on his own, another show focusing on improvisations called "Calligraphie d'ombre et de lumiere" or "calligraphy of light and shade". From the year 2002 Hassan created his own books, which are translated into English, French, Italian, and German.
Creations from Hassan Massoudy are a subtle mix of present and past, oriental and occidental art, tradition and modernity. He perpetuates tradition while braking from it. Over the years he has purified and simplified the lines of his drawing. The words and phrases he draws come from poets and writers from all over the world or sometimes simply from popular wisdom. All his work is strongly inspired by a humanistic interest. The emotion that one may feel looking at his calligraphies comes from the movement of the lines, their lightness, their transparency, the balance between black, white, emptiness and fullness, the concrete and the abstract. From his training as a calligrapher in Iraq, Hassan Massoudy has kept the noble spirit of the craftsman who creates or invents his own tools and prepares his own inks.

Most Iraqis look exhausted - the tension and nervousness apparent on their pale faces. The fear is apparent in their eyes, as well. They anticipate death at any moment, on any corner, because no one knows when a car or roadside bomb might explode.

People thank God when they arrive home safely to enjoy time with their families. But as night falls and darkness prevails, the atmosphere also grows dark. Residents sit in blackness - electricity and water are scarce - to guard their homes. They do not know if a militia will come to kill or kidnap under the protection of the black sky. The shooting heard at night, mostly random, deepens people's fear and acts as a constant reminder that they may be the next victim.

The biggest danger in Baghdad is the break up of families, particularly if parents are from different sects. Families are tired and anxious, and children are paying the price through neglect. Fed up with what is going on outside of their homes, parents cannot deal with stresses at home.

It's been almost a month and not alot has been happening, which is my fault really, I've been quite lazy, maybe if one of you wondeful people would like to help this lonely nigger run this club, I'd really appeciate it.

I know what some of you are thinking, iranians ? Well yes, why not iranians ? they're muslim like us, and iraq has many taba3iya families who are originaly iranian. Also alot of iraqi food is in fact iranian food, I think margat bamia is iranian. and besides the war was only some cold war bullshit, in the end they got hurt more than us. this is why I'm adding them.


REVAMP

I'm gonna work on revamping our club, one thing I'll do is try to change the looks of this journal to look more iraqi, also I have to change the icon we have now, brought to my attention the fact that the icon reads "allah deviantart akbar" which is not very appropriate. So I guess would could have this as the next and first competition.

WEEKLY AMBASSADOR'S REPORT:

DA's political forum is an active exciting platform of ideas and texual massacres, for that a purpose a new club was created, the *DAPoliticalForum . One of thier activities is a weekly report from all over the world from "ambassadors", I happen to be the iraqi ambassador. So I'll be posting up news items and deviations about iraq. Ramadan Kareem first of all, and kull 3am wa antum bekhair. I hope everyone is enjoying thier fasting and may Allah bless and reward our actions and prayers during this special month, and make it easier on the people of iraq, inside and out.

Do you have any special traditions when it comes to Ramadan ? Do you go to Beebee's place for iftar ? do you pray Eid at that special mosque every year ? What makes this month special for you ? please share with us ya3ni.

So we've been quiet for a while here, for me I've had alot going on the past few weeks and I didn't really know which direction to take in this group.

A survey taken recently suggests that 57% of participants want a direction that emphasizes unity amongst the different ethnic, tribal and relegious divisions of iraqis. Something which I was happy about, I am NOT the only person who thinks these tensions are introdced and not some dormant grudge. allahu a3lam.

So I'll try to provide info and links according to YOUR wishes. This however means that you guys have to also give me something to work with, I've seen your work in the gallery and it's great in terms of design and ideas. and I want to see more of it.

I'm thinking aloud here, we could have an informal competition to design a poster with the slogan "عراق سنة و شيعة, هذا الوطن ما نبيعه" or something along these lines, tell me what you think.

Al-AskarÄ« or the `Askariyya Mosque/Shrine (Arabic: مرقد الامامين علي الهادي والحسن العسكري Marqad al-Imāmayn `AlÄ« l-HādÄ« wa l-Ħassan al-`Askarī is a ShÄ«`a Muslim holy site located in the Iraqi city of Samarra 125 km (78 mi) from Baghdad. It is one of the most important ShÄ«`ite mosques in the world, built in 944.[1] Its dome was destroyed in a bombing in February 2006 and its two remaining minarets were destroyed in another bombing in June 2007, causing widespread anger amongst ShÄ«`a Muslims.

The remains of the tenth and eleventh Shī`a Imāms, `Alī l-Hādī and his son Hassan al-`Askarī, known as "the two `Askarīs" (al-`Askariyyān), rest at the shrine. It stands adjacent to a shrine to the Twelfth or "Hidden" Imām, Muħammad al-Mahdī. The `Askariyya Shrine is also known as the "Tomb or Mausoleum of the Two Imāms", "the Tomb of Imāms `Alī l-Hādī and Hassan al-`Askarī" and al-Hadhratu l-`Askariyya.

Also buried within the Mosque are the remains of Hakimah Khatun, sister of `Alī l-Hādī, and of Narjis Khatun, mother of Muħammad al-Mahdi.

Time magazine reported at the time of the 2006 Al-Askari Mosque bombing that “al-Askari [is] one of Shi'ite Islam's holiest sites, exceeded in veneration only by the shrines of Najaf and Karbala. Even Samarra's Sunnis hold al-Askari in high esteem. The expression 'to swear by the shrine' is routinely used by both communities".

The Imāms `AlÄ« l-HādÄ« (also known as an-Naqī and Hassan al-`AskarÄ« lived under house arrest in the part of Samarra that had been Caliph al-Mu'tasim's military camp (`Askaru l-Mu'tasim). As a result, they are known as the `Askariyyān ("Dwellers in the Camp"). They died and were buried in their house on AbÄ« Ahmad Street near the mosque built by Mu'tasim.[5] A later tradition attributes their deaths to poison.

The shrine around their tombs was developed in 944 by the Hamdanid governor Nasīr ad-Dawla and became a focus for pilgrims. It was developed and rebuilt several times in succeeding centuries,[6] including, in particular, by Arslan al-Basasiri around 1053 and by Caliph an-Nasīr li-Dīn Allāh in 1209.

Nasir ad-Din Shah Qajar undertook the latest remodelling of the shrine in 1868, with the golden dome added in 1905. Covered in 72,000 gold pieces and surrounded by walls of light blue tiles, the dome was a dominant feature of the Samarra skyline. It was approximately 20 m (66 ft) in diameter by 68 m (223 ft) high.

Now as a sunni, I wasn't really aware of this mosque because 1- I suck at relegious history and 2- I'm from Baghdad and never been to Sammara. However in recognizing that it's a holy cite for shia, I really doubt very much that sunnis would blow it up just coz it's a shia cite.

The fact that it got blown up again makes it harder for me to believe that sunnis did it, the last time this happened, alot of sunni (and shia mosques) got burned and raised to the ground. Iraqis living side by side who usually respeted others' opinions started attacking these very people who were thier neighbours and freinds and family.

So why would they do it again ? these bombings make no sense and benefit no one except for those who WANT there to be disunity between shia and sunnis.

He saw some were sleeping, others were quiet,

And he saw that all was quiet and safe

This didn't suit the cursed devil, he thought to himself, I want Hell to reign here

He went to the shi'I and told him why are you quiet you fool ?

Look at the sunni, how he lives in castles and how you sleep on the ground

Then he went to the sunni and seethed at him "Look at you, sleeping all relaxed

Can't you see the shi'i armed to his teeth ? with Iran as his neighbor ?"

The people became confused and EVERYBODY picked up arms

Hometown Baghdad
An ongoing documentary web series following the lives of a few Iraqi 20-somethings trying to survive in Baghdad.


The everyday life of the Iraqi citizen has been the great untold story of the Iraq war.

The Distribution
The brave Iraqi subjects and crew risked their lives every time they turned on a camera to make this series. They want to show the world what life is like when your hometown is a war-zone. We believe that people who see their stories will want to share them with others. That's why we're distributing the series online. So please - watch the videos, rewatch them, tell friends about them, comment on them, and link to them.

The Language
The intention of the Iraqi filmmakers and subjects was to show the world what Baghdad is truly like. That's why they usually speak English and not Arabic.

The Producers
Hometown Baghdad is a production of NY-based Chat the Planet [link] who worked with a group of Iraqi filmmakers in Baghdad. The subjects also turned the cameras on themselves when it became too dangerous for our crew to travel through Baghdad. Read more about the producers here.[link]

"Fallujah: The Hidden Massacre," a documentary by Sigfrido Ranucci and Maurizio Torrealta. Broadcast today on the Italian state television network RAI.



This documentary featuring interviews with U.S. soldiers, Iraqi doctors and international journalists on the U.S. attack on Fallujah. Produced by Italian state broadcaster RAI TV, the documentary charges U.S. warplanes illegally dropped white phosphorus incendiary bombs on civilian populations, burning the skin off Iraqi victims. One U.S. soldier charges this amounts to the U.S. using chemical weapons against the Iraqi people.


And here's some REALITIES appeared from this documentary...

JEFF ENGLEHART (ex-U.S. soldier): I was personally involved with escorting a commander to Fallujah for Operation Phantom Fury. We were told going into Fallujah, into the combat area, that every single person that was walking, talking, breathing was an enemy combatant. As such, every single person that was walking down the street or in a house was a target.


JEFF ENGLEHART: It seemed like just a massive killing of Arabs. It looked like just a massive killing.


REPORTER: Were any chemical weapons used in Fallujah?
JEFF ENGLEHART: From the U.S. military, yeah, absolutely. White phosphorus. Possibly napalm may or may not have been used; I do not know. I do know that white phosphorus was used, which is definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, a chemical weapon.
The gases from the warhead of the white phosphorus will disperse in a cloud. And when it makes contact with skin, then it's absolutely irreversible damage, burning of flesh to the bone. It doesn't necessarily burn clothes, but it will burn the skin underneath clothes. And this is why protective masks do not help, because it will burn right through the mask, the rubber of the mask. It will manage to get inside your face. If you breathe it, it will blister your throat and your lungs until you suffocate, and then it will burn you from the inside. It basically reacts to skin, oxygen and water.
REPORTER: Have you seen the effects of these weapons?
JEFF ENGLEHART: Yes. Burned. Burned bodies. I mean, it burned children, and it burned women. White phosphorus kills indiscriminately. It's a cloud that will within, in most cases, 150 meters of impact will disperse, and it will burn every human being or animal.


JEFF ENGLEHART: I don't doubt that American soldiers who are frustrated after being involved in combat for a year would have any problems with doing any kind of vandalism. I mean, it's very common. Indiscriminate vandalism was found – I mean, there was carvings in the walls at Babylon, an ancient structure, a historical monument. It was common for soldiers to carve, you know, “Hello, mom, I'm from Texas,” on these walls. I just think there's a certain lack of respect within the American military ranks, especially when dealing with soldiers who are frustrated. I personally did not witness any mosque vandalism. Our brigade was good about keeping that very controlled. But I did hear stories. Places such as Samarra, Baghdad, Mosul, mosques being attacked, mosques being vandalized, the Koran being damaged. I think it's very common.

I deliberately stood down, because I didn't want to be part of a government that was conducting an illegal and bloody war against people who had done us no harm whatsoever. Well, I heard from the American military at the beginning of the war, at the beginning of the bombardments of Iraq, there was an admission by the American military that they had used a substance similar to napalm when they first went into Iraq. I put the question down. And as you can see, the reply was “No, they hadn't.” My government were not aware of it. Best Polical joke in the world.

Geoge Bush invited Tony Blair for a lunch meeting, afterwards to came out for a press conference,

One of the journalists asked them "So what did you decide on during your meeting ?"

Bush said "We've decided to kill 20 million Muslims and a dentist"

So the journalists were all surprised, one of them asked "Why a dentist ?"

Bush turned to Blair and whispered "See ? I told you no one will ask us about the Muslims"

Then the sender of the email discusses the sad it is that probably most of the people listening to or reading this joke thought "Why a dentist?", and commenting that this is the US policy of taking out attention off the real issue while they do what they want, the same thing is happening with Iran.

First of all we thank God for making it easier for us to share our art and ideas on this medium.

Secondly a HUGE thanks to for being generous enough to donate a 3 month subscription to iraqideviants. From now on we'll be firing from all cylinders !

Since this is going to be a club catering to all iraqis on deviant art, man it would be good to have a nice kind person to donate a subscription to us, what do you say good charitable man or woman out there ?

Also, what does everyone think about allowing US soliders into the club ? Personally I'm against it and will not allow them to join the club or submit work on the club, as I view them as invaders, but that's one iraqi's opinion, what do the rest of you think ?

In seeing so many clubs for all sorts of affiliations and nationalities, and none for iraqis, I thought I should initiate such a group, if only to get the ball rolling for others to make use of this group.

I'm hoping to make this group for all iraqis, you can post anything here that is not deemed offensive, racist or insulting to other iraqis.

I'm guessing more rules will pop once I need to lay them, but for now, play nice, and be good iraqis.
