The good news is that I am working on some new piece of art, specifically some artistic cartography. It was stunningly beautiful, until I lost 2-3 hours of work due to the GIMP crashing.
I finished making the mountains this morning then made the forests, which involved a great deal of tinkering. I had moved onto detailing the marshland and had started on producing on producing the rivers. Then I found the forests clearcut, marshes dredged and rivers dried to oblivion. While I am redoing the work, it is incredibly frustrating. Gotta say though that even what I had achieved up to that point was awesome.

I know my biggest weakness in my art at the present. I know what functional capabilities I lack. Even more importantly, I know exactly what course of action would remedy both situations. I need to sit down and sketch, chiefly people, with pencils and paper for about 20-40 hours (albeit not necessarily consecutively).

The problem is that I am having a heck of a time forcing myself to do this. I usually manage to bring the necessary tools with me when I go out, but I seem to subconsciously avoid doing the relatively simple practice. I suspect it is due to the fact that, well, I have gained most of my skill in a surprisingly little amount of effort and I know that this training would require more sweat equity. It's probably also the fact that I have high standards for myself and each little sketch would bug me when I looked at their flaws.

Anyone have motivation in a can? I could also do with subconscious suppressants.

I am trying to gradually decrease the amount of use of references on my art and thus this piece only used a photo reference as inspiration for lineart and don't plan on using it afterwards. The Einstein picture was done by tracing the photo to derive some basic lineart and I believe I used the photo as a constant reference as I worked on it. Slow progression.

I spent all evening actually working on the background of this piece, largely due to the detail. It ought to make the lighting easier at the very least and I might wind up recycling it in the future. Unfortunately, the GIMP seems to do poorly in animating gifs. In the adobe ps world, I used "Imageready" which does the job marvelously. Unfortunately the GIMP doesn't have that functionality. I have to animate the individual as individual layers and cannot make variable durations of each frame. Additionally, I can't have any overlay effects which would modify each of the frames due to this.

Ugh. It will require more tinkering for even a poor product.
I have been slooooowly working on colouring a great piece of linework from Wen_M and in the process of procrastination i have been fetching brushes. My primary tool for art is the GIMP which means that there are a relatively limited number of brushes compared to the insane numbers found for Photoshop. Still, i have found a good bit. My chief difficulty is finding the totally free brushes.

It seems illogical, but i don't wish to acquire any brushes which demand credit on their use. It's not that i don't respect the work or think they deserve it. It is simply that i will use a large variety of brushes and don't want to be distracted from the art-making simply for the purpose of recording which specific brushes i am using. I give credit for stock in general, but i also release most of my work under a derivatives-permitted creative commons license and accordingly would feel worse about the credit. If i make a piece with a proprietary brush, then those making derivative works (if they ever occurred) would be obliged to keep the credits and things would just be messy.

Instead, i have collected those free brushes found on DA without restrictions. If you want to find any of my brushes used or find some of the great credit-needed brushes you could do well by simply browsing for "gimp brushes".
I also have another image in mind which might be easier. My pc's in my game recently erected a great wall in the lands of the dead around the city. In that land, it appears that the obelisk towers are about 20-30 feet tall and seem to take on the appearance of crows. The ritual making the wall killed 13 of them, so the wall appears to be made of them (with the towers being the bodies and the walls made of feather-like stone.)
Got an idea for a piece, if only i could actually draw the thing. It is of a subterranean hive with two greenish pools facing eachother. Those pools each extend tendrils holding cards and one of them says to a third individual "Hey, would you like to join in a play of Vill?"

A most wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Good news is that i have finished my physics exam which means i have almost nothing keeping me from working on art. Additionally, i have been checking my DA page neurotically so my own art is sitting there motionless, staring at me. I have an urge to produce more simply so that i don't get stuck with looking at the same pics of Mike Engel over and over and over....

Art shall come soon, promise.

Good news: Have some excellent inspiration for a piece of art for the Sundered Heavens, specifically for celestial armor.

Bad news: Physics labs take precedence over art.

The idea? Based on the image from. [link]
Halos are mis-remembering of the armor worn by the celestials. A metal plate behind the head which works like a flag on some of the old japanese armor types in addition to protecting from being stuck in the back of the head while permitting full mobility. That plus the adaptations to allow for armor on winged beings.

It will be up here sometime, though i suspect in scraps.
