That's not to say it's a philosophy-fest, in fact it's mostly comprised of a not-too-subtle take on modern issues, but the most interesting part isn't even shown in the trailers. The protagonist is well-acted and a generally interesting character who has to go through a rather arduous 'learning process' in order to simply retain sanity of any sort; even though originally he factored in as part of the antagonising crew.

So, without further ado, I was delightfully surprised by this film and do suggest it to anyone with interest~ Just thought I'd add my late-night take on such things. Apologies for not being terribly lucid ^ ^;

Playing Pretend!~

Now, this here is one part that I found extremely interesting. The progression towards pretend play begins with 'representational ability' where the child is able to place representative symbols and mental pictures for objects and events in the world around him or her. Eventually the child can detatch those symbols and use them indepedently. This is called 'deffered imitation'. With that skill they can imitate the actions of others that have been comitted to their memory. Both of these skills are combined into 'retend play' where the child can act out situations and stories on their own in order to express a sort of connection with the world around them. This heavily influences the child's creativity in later life. (Bornstein, Haynes, O'Reilly and Painter, 1996)

Now, let's talk about my kid Koyomiko! Geez, is she ever creative! She loves to play pretend with her parents. Anything from creating stories to simply imitating her parent's 'grown up' behaviour (In particular, pretending to be a police officer because one of her mothers is a police officer). I also have this image of her pretending to be a pirate for some reason....

Healthy Eating Habits!~

Healthy eating is important for young children and the methods given in the book I found to be quite interesting. The original study was performed by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Academy of Pediatrics (1997;1992). They each gave suggestions on how to make your child a healthy eater. I especially found the suggestions of serving finger foods (carrots, apples, etc.), 'dressing up' healthy foods to make them more appealing and giving the child a choice between foods with similar nutritional content (rye or whole wheat, etc.). I found this interesting because I have had many an experience with unconcerned mothers that feed their child terrible things. Sure, every once in a while fast food isn't so bad, but all the time can lead to overeating and terrible health in later life.

Now, let's take Koyomiko as an example. She's a model kid for eating healthy with her mother Yomi being a healthy eating nut! Alas, that's a good thing seeing as the experience will adapt her to eating healthier foods as she grows older.

The Egocentric Question!~

Egocentrism is a concept that pops up when a child enters the 'reoperational' stage between the ages of 2 and 7. Many experiments have been done to analyze this point in a child's development. The experiment by Piaget called for a child to try and visualize mounds of sand from a doll's point of view located across from them. Children between 2 and 7 could not 'see' from the doll's perspective; instead they viewed it from their own.

Although, an experiment done by Hughes (1975) used toy police officers to help children visualize the positions of dolls moving across a board. When asked to hide the dolls so the officers couldn't see them, the children performed the task flawlessly. He thought that this was due to a police officer and children knowing what an officer does that allowed the children to see from the 'eyes' of the officer.

For little Koyomiko it can sometimes be upsetting to her when her parents are angered over something that does not involve her. From an early age she learned to be concerned and thus she has begun to grow empathetic but often believes the anger is directly related to her, even if it is not.

Stay Active, Dammit!~

It's a sad truth nowadays that most children 9-13 don't get enough exercise. Many aren't even encouraged to do so! In fact, in a national survey by Duke, Huhman & Heitzler (2003) 22.6% of children engaged in no physical activity durting their free time. No wonder America has so many fat kids....

Alas, Koyomiko's parents would never let that happen! Her mothers use their energy to encourage her to stay active and not watch too much television. This is why she enjoys games so much, because she's encouraged to do so. All it takes is a little encouragement to get children on the right path to staying healthy!

Indeed, I really want to write 'The Glasschains'; I have a plot and everything it's just that the first chapter is giving me far too much trouble and is turning out sub-par (At least to me it is). This, in turn distresses me terribly.

Do you think I used up all the power of my Muse when writing 'Helix'? Because, since I finished that nothing I have written has been any good...

This new story will not involve ghosts as the previous one did, but will instead revolve around the remaining Dagon and their certain....'interactions' with the girls. Surprises, action and mystery await~

I guess it would be time to organize my thoughts I currently have on the state of my fiction universe. Let's see now...:

- Continue with 'Help Desk' and 'Behind the Scenes' (That's a given)

- Draw up a re-write of 'Terra Anima' and get that going ASAP.

- Possible inclusion of a second sequel to 'Helix' with the current working title of 'Cosmosis' (Yes, bad pun~)

- An epic poem detailing Kaorin's growing obsession with Sakaki as written from her perspective; working title 'Karma and Catharsis'

- A Toyomi love story. I've wanted to write a real love tale for a long time and I believe that I will soon shoulder that challenge.

- Complete what would have been the original plot for 'Helix' by dictating a different title and character usage. (Yukari was originally the main protagonist)

- Possibly some sort of dramatic monologue; details uncertain.

So, there you have it~ I know most of them seem quite vague, but if anyone is interested I'd be glad to tell more!

"In tune with the early emotional development of the child, the mother's emotions play a major role. In a study done by Dawson, Klinger, Panagiotides, Hill and Spieker (1992), the emotional activity in a young child, between birth and three years of age, is influenced by the emotional state of the mother. It was discovered that children of severely depressed mothers had reduced mental activity in the left frontal lobe, which is invloved in expressing happiness and other positives. In contrast, their right frontal lobe was far more active; that lobe being in charge of feeling misery and sadness. In the same study, children of happy, complete families had high activity all over the brain, thus showing benefits to experiencing happiness around a child. Now, let us consider little Koyomiko Takino-Mizuhara! Her family is quite complete and her parents are generally happy individuals, especially Tomo. Thus, Koyomiko is a cheerful child who is encouraged to be cheerful and learn about the world. As a result, she will most likely have average to slightly above-average brain activity; thus resulting in less negative emotions and a better handling of stressful situations."

'According to research by Bouchard (1994), approxiamtely 66 percent of all grouped personality traits;thus being extraversion, neuroticism, conscientiosness, agreeability, and openness to experience, are inherited at least partially from one's parents. On a similar note, research by Thomas and Chess (1984) indicates that temperment is greatly determined by a combined temperment of one's parents. Thus, the child is most likely a medium between parental extremes; most often seen during the younger ages before individual egoistic development during adolescence. So, here I bring up my child, Koyomiko Takino-Mizuhara. She is normally a curious and adventurous child, but with a deep penchant for learning; each trait coming from her respective mother, Tomo with her energy and vivaciousnes and Yomi with her cool intelligence and reasoning. A great example of combined traits in Koyomiko is her occassional rude comment in the presence of others. She does not normally make rude statements (Thus part of her 'Yomi-side' I will call it), but they do slip out (Her 'Tomo-side' is the one making said comments). She does develop certain traits of her own, as any child does, but let us save that for another assignment!'

Here I will recount the discussion to the best of my notetaking and memorial abilities:

Professor: The Create-a-Child assignment was due today. I know some of you didn't do it, so get it done! And just so you know what the hell I'm looking for, I'm gonna read some good examples here. (shuffles papers around)

(At this point she reads two other people's descriptions, but we're not interested in their kids are we? So let's skip ahead. hehehe... )


Professor: Here we have Jason's kid, Koyomiko Takino-Mizuhara. Umm... (Here she launches into the description I wrote. I'm not going to reproduce it here. Just look at my 'Koyomiko's Psychology' journal for that information) A bright and curious child! That's good! All children are curious, but that may not be a turning point of their development. So, I assume Koyomiko has something special about her curiosity?

Jay: (First, I correct her pronounciation of Koyomiko. She was saying it like 'Koyomi-ko' ) She likes to draw and do all sorts of art-related stuff. You know, be creative and all that.

Professor: Great! So she has a creative mind. A lot of that is learned through interactions at an early age. Her family also seems interesting. A lesbian couple; or even a gay couple at that has an interesting way of developing the child. Wait! Wait! (holds up hands) Let me explain. In general, if a gay or lesbian couple raises a kid, it has no effect; yeah, NO EFFECT, on how the child develops. The only difference is when those asshole kids in like, middle school get to making fun of the child when they find out. It's the insesitivity of OTHERS that may affect the child, NOT the parents themselves. (turns back to me) So, her parents are a young lesbian couple, but they seem to have stable jobs.

Jay: Yep, police officer and accountant.

Professor: So, they can provide for her monetarily, but... (pauses) Did they breast feed her?

Jay: Umm....I'm not sure, but I guess. They are Japanese and you say....

Professor: They probably did then. (Here she launches into her daily rant about how mothers should breast feed their kids and how it is ostracized in America and the rest of the world does it, etc....) I don't see anything about familial abuse in here, which is very rare amongst gay people, mind you. So, yeah.. (shakes her head) This is a great example. Great, great, great. Anything else you want to add about her, Jason?

Jay: Umm....my friend drew a picture of her and her family. And I have a print if you all would like to see it.

Professor: (eyes go wide) Holy Moses! (That's her common 'curse word' ) That's right! Your friend created her as a character in her art and stuff, right? Let's see this thing then!

Jay: (I pull out the print I made of Funari's drawing 'Just the Family'. and had it to my Professor)

Professor: Holy Moses! What a cool style! And what an adorable kid!! (laughs) Even her parents are cute!

Guy in the Back with the Funny-Looking Nose: Let's see it!

Girl with Too Much Eye Makeup: I wanna see it too!

Professor: Would it be ok if I passed it around?

Jay: Sure. (At this point I am terribly embarassed. I've never really gotten this much attention.)

(And thus it is passed around. Many do say 'Aww!', some jerks laugh, but whatever! The majority thought it was absurdly cute.)

Professor: What a cool kid. I've never seen anyone go and DRAW their kid before...Well, YOU didn't draw her but you know, I've never seen anyone have any pictures of anything like that. It adds depth, it's neat. Anyway, get those kids in! Your second assignment is due next Friday...

(End discussion)

So, Koyomiko is a real celebrity! I think it's sooooo cool!! It can only get better from here! I can't WAIT to see little Koyomiko grow up, and maybe she'll get used in class again as an example!

I'm sure Koyomiko and her parents (including Funari) Are very very happy at her success!!

She has all the elements I was looking for with the first assignment. You mentioned that your friend that made her uses her in drawings. Feel free to use those drawings to add detail to your assignments in the future. The more detail there is, the easier it is to grade."

We were assigned to create a child; citing age, race, personality, features, family, etc.

I immediately thought, "Koyomiko!"

And thus I asked Funari-chan and it was graciously granted!

So, for all my Child Psychology assignments I am using Koyomiko as my 'model child' to examine the nuances of the human brain as one grows into adolescence. I am also using the Takino-Mizuhara family as my 'model family'.

I'll post the assignments here as well if anyone is interested in knowing just what makes Koyomiko and her family tick!

I think it will be quite interesting to see how Koyomiko and her family will look in the eyes of professional psychology!

[Edit] I just thought I'd let you all know that one of my assignments will be to plan a healthy meal for Koyomiko and then cook it! Sounds exciting, does it not!? And we all know Koyomiko loves healthy food!

"The child I will be taking care of is Koyomiko Takino-Mizuhara. She is of Asian descent (specifically Japanese) and is a child from a lesbian household; thus she takes the names of both her her mothers. Strangely enough, through science, they are actually her true mothers, but I won't get into that for this class. Her one mother, Koyomi Mizuhara, works as an accountant and her other, Tomo Takino, is a police officer. They are generally caring parents, if not just a bit eccentric at times. She also has close relations with her grandmother and a friend of the family she calls 'Ba-chan', which is akin to saying 'aunt'. Her early childhood was generally good, with her parents promoting healthy eating habits as well as manners. This is not to say she doesn't have her troubles. She is quite energetic, sometimes a bit overly so and she also must wear thick glasses; which may cause a problem in her school years to mean-spirited children. She is a bright and curious child whose mind can flourish if given the correct motivation and support. So, that's Koyomiko in a nutshell. She was actually created by my friend Funari as a character to use in her writing and art. So, technically I'm just borrowing her kid! I hope you will all come to like her!"

And that was my introduction to the class! I think it was pretty good, how about you guys?

I am so ungodly happy to nearly be done! And I get tons of time off as well, along with classes that are actually interesting and not just junk that is required!

Hopefully my Secondary Education teacher will be the same as I had last semester. She reminds me a lot of Yukari, what with having the 'Dumbass of the Week' and having discussions about why people are 'so damn stupid!'. One can tell that she is a bit jaded with teaching, but that makes it all the more humourous!

Anyhow, I expect this last semester to be a lot less stressful, so I'll have plenty of time to write and just enjoy myself (after having to work my fingers to the bone every previous semester).
