The movements he creates with the mouse/tablet are reproduced by the software as looping animations and sounds. It's like a very literal language that bridges video and audio.

The loops he creates in this video seem pretty simple and aren't particularly aesthetic, but this opens up some really interesting doors as to processes that can synthesize sight and sound.

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design.
"Instruments to Perform Color" is an article about the history of "colour-organs" (instruments designed to display different colours on a screen depending on the pitch played)- the part I find the most interesting is the series of colour-note associations that were developed. (I found the article at [link] but I don't know if it is still posted there.)

Castel keyboard colours for his clavecin oculaire (1700s):

C: Blue
C#: Celadon
D: Green
Eb: Olive green
E: Yellow
F: Apricot
F#: Orange
G: Red
Ab: Crimson
A: Violet
Bb: Agate
B: Indigo

Rimington's keyboard colours for his Colour-Organ (1893):
C: Deep red
C#: Crimson
D: Orange-crimson
Eb: Orange
E: Yellow
F: Yellow-green
F#: Green
G: Bluish green
Ab: Blue-green
A: Indigo
Bb: Deep blue
B: Violet

In a general way it seems to be indicated that harmonic colours are the results of vibratory effects upon the eye of multiples of like measurements, thus fulfilling exactly the analogy according to which harmonious effects are produced upon the ear.
-E. The trick that I used to do with me wife was I'd pick up cans of dog food at the supermarket and I'd go, "Fran!" And she's going, "Don't look, don't look." It's better if they ignore you because it means that an old lady has to walk across and go, "Excuse me, but that young man is trying to get your attention." So she'd go, "What?!" And I'd go, "Do we need dog food?"
"No... We haven't got a dog." I'm a man of simple pleasures.
And I did this every time we went to the supermarket, right? For about two years. He goes inside an art shop and erates its owner for displaying kitsch—art that is merely "beautiful" and therefore worthless. "Do you think gaudy colors can gloss over the misery of the world?" Hieronymus shouts. "Do you think loud orgies of luxurious good taste can drown the moans of the tortured earth? ... Art is the sacred torch that must shed its merciful light into all life's terrible depths, into every shameful and sorrowful abiss; art is the divine flame that must set fire to the world, util the world wih all its infamy and anguish burns and melts away in redeeming compassion!"

"3#" uses a track "composed" by media artist Seth Price, its music based on the forms of 1980s electronic pop songs. Price uses music production software to copy the structure of popular music from the recent past. By editing out one element (in this case, the singer), he comments on the genre through an imperfect copy. The video uses text (some quoted from Morrissey's lyrics) and graphic transitions to outline an argument about how and why pop music functions, pointing to its promises of unique, infamous, and sublime experiences through repetition and mass distribution.

To be a better man
To be a better man
I was hiding underneath the sea
I was looking out for me
Just me, the fish, and the sea
Just me, the fish, and the sea
‘Cause the music was so much louder there
Just me, the fish, and the sea
Just me, the fish, and the sea
Unfamiliar apathy
‘Cause I born a noise machine
Greater still, I was born a pill
So gather all of your family now
Scream the noise and just leave
Don’t leave the ground
The music was louder there
Don’t leave the ground
The music was louder there
Under the sea
The music was louder there
Under the sea
The music was louder there
I was so happy there

We were all down at Marge’s Bar
Tellin’ stories if we had one
Someone fired the old jukebox up
The song, it sure was a sad one
A teardrop rolled down Bubba’s nose
Some pain the song was inflictin’
And all at once he jumped to his feet
Just like somebody kicked him

Bubba shot the jukebox last night
Said it played a sad song that made him cry
Went to his truck and got a 45
Bubba shot the jukebox last night

Bubba had never been accused
Of being mentally stable
So we did not draw an easy breath
Until he laid that Colt on the table
He hung his head until the cops showed up
They dragged him right out of Marge’s
And told him, “Don’t you play dumb with us, son
You know damn well what the charge is”

Bubba shot the jukebox last night
Said it played a sad song that made him cry
Went to his truck and got a 45
Well he shot the jukebox last night

When the sheriff arrived with his bathrobe on
The confrontation was a tense one
He shook his head and said, “Bubba, m’boy
You was always a dense one”
Now, Red was discharged of his gun
That’s what the officer’s a-claimin’
Bubba hollered, as red as hell
“I hit just where I was aimin’!”

Bubba shot the jukebox last night
Said it played a sad song that made him cry
Went to his truck and got a 45
Well he shot the jukebox
Stopped it with one shot
Bubba shot the jukebox last night

He could not tell right from wrong
Through the teardrops in his eyes
Beyond a shadow of a doubt
It was a justifiable homicide

A Scotsman clad in kilt left a bar one evening fair
And one could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share
He walked 'round until he could no longer keep his feet
Then he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street
Ring ding diddle iddle ai-dio
Ring di diddly-i o
He stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street

About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by
And one says to the other with a twinkle in her eye,
"See yon sleeping Scotsman, so strong and handsome built
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt"
Ring ding diddle iddle ai-dio
Ring di diddly-i o
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt"

They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be
And lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
There, behold for them to view, beneath his Scottish skirt
Was nothing more than God engraced him with upon his birth
Ring ding diddle iddle ai-dio
Ring di diddly-i o
Was nothing more than God engraced him with upon his birth

They marvelled for a moment, then one said, "We must be gone
Let's leave a present for our friend before we move along"
As the gift they left, a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow
Around the bonnie star, the Scot's kilt did lift and show
Ring ding diddle iddle ai-dio
Ring di diddly-i o
Around the bonnie star, the Scot's kilt did lift and show

The Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled towards the trees
Behind a bush he lift his kilt and God said what he sees
In a startled voice he said, to what's before his eyes, "Oh!
I'm glad I don't know where yea been but I see yea won first prize."

YouTube link: [link]

Folks, I’d like to sing a song about the American dream. About me, about you. About the way our American hearts beat way down in the bottoms of our chests. About that special feeling we get in the cockles of our hearts. Maybe below the cockles, maybe in the sub-cockle area, maybe in the liver, maybe in the kidneys, maybe even in the colon. We don’t know.

I’m just a regular Joe with a regular job
I’m your average white, suburbanite slob
I like football and porno and books about war
I got an average house with a nice hard-wood floor
My wife and my job, my kids and my car
My feet on my table, and a Cuban cigar

But sometimes that just ain’t enough
To keep a man like me interested
(Oh no, no way, uh-uh)
No, I’ve gotta go out and have fun at someone else’s expense
Oh yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
I drive really slow in the ultra-fast lane
While people behind me are going insane

I’m an asshole! (He’s an asshole) I’m an asshole
I’m an asshole! (He’s an asshole, such an asshole)

I use public toilets and I piss on the seat
I walk around in the summertime saying, “How about this heat?”

I’m an asshole! (He’s an asshole) I’m an asshole
I’m an asshole! (He’s the world’s biggest asshole)

Sometimes I park in handicap spaces
While handicapped people make handicapped faces

I’m an asshole! (He’s an asshole) I’m an asshole
I’m an asshole! (He’s a real fucking asshole)

Maybe I shouldn’t be singing this song
Ranting and raving and carrying on
Maybe they’re right when they tell me I’m wrongÂ
Nah!

I’m an asshole! (He’s an asshole) I’m an asshole
I’m an asshole! (He the world’s biggest asshole)

You know what I’m gonna do? I’m gonna get myself a 1967 Cadillac El Dorado convertible- hot pink! With the whale-skin hubcaps, an all-leather cow interior, and big brown baby seal eyes for headlights, yah! And I’m gonna drive around in that baby at 115 miles per hour, getting one mile per gallon, sucking down quarter-pounder cheeseburgers from McDonald’s in the old-fashioned, non-biodegradable Styrofoam containers. And when I’m done sucking down those greaseball burgers, I’m gonna wipe my mouth on the American flag, and then I’m gonna toss the Styrofoam containers right out the side, and there ain’t a goddamn thing anybody can do about it. You know why? Because we got the bombs, that’s why. Two words: nuclear fucking weapons, okay? Russia, Germany, Romania, they can have all the democracy they want. They can have a big democracy cake and walk right through the middle of Tienanmen Square and it won’t make a lick of difference, because we got the bombs. Okay? John Wayne’s not dead, he’s frozen. And as soon as we find a cure for cancer, we’re gonna thaw out the duke and he’s gonna be pretty pissed off. You know why?
'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
Not a piper was stirring--they all were quite soused;
Their hose were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that Saint Knicker-less soon would be there.

The drummers were nestled all snug in their beds,
Midst visions of drumsticks and new Premier heads.
And Ma in balmoral and I in my tam,
Had just settled down for an impromptu jam.

When out on he lawn there rose such a clatter,
I sprang from my chair, my music a-scatter.
Away to the window I tore in a hurry.
Yelling to Ma, "Keep piping! Don't worry!"

She struck in her drones and had a wee blow,
As I gazed at the moonlight on new-fallen snow.
Then what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a sleigh full of pipers and drummers and beer.

With a little old driver who spoke with such force,
That I knew right away--he's the PM, of course!
More rapid than eagles his pipers they came--
He whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, Angus! Now, Seamus! Now, Gordon and Harry--
On, Duncan! On Ian! On, Willie and Larry.
To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!
Now pipe away! Pipe away! Pipe away all!"

Almost as one, and without any gripes,
They blew up and struck in eight sets of pipes.
And then in a twinkling, I heard on the roof,
The chanters, the drum rolls, with nary a goof.

As I drew in my head and was turning around,
Down the chimney Knicker-less came with a bound;
With shoes newly shined, and shirt neatly pressed;
He was, I could see, regimentally dressed.

His eyes--how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
I could see that he'd already been into the sherry.
I smiled at him now and became somewhat bolder,
As a new set of Naills he flung on his shoulder.

The blowstick he held tight in his teeth,
The bass drone caught at and knocked off our wreath.
He had a broad face, was fairly well built,
And, damn! this guy looked good in a kilt!

A wink of his eye, a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I'd be best off in bed;
He spoke not a word, by the light of the moon,
But struck in his pipes and played me a chune.

He played a 2/4, a 6/8, and a reel,
A strathspey, a hornpipe, a jig--with great zeal.
After he'd played all these chunes just for me,
He stopped and put gifts out under the tree--

Pipes by McCallum, and pipes made by Kron,
All guaranteed to blow steady tone;
Reeds and chanters, a new water trap,
Ash plugs and tuners, and all of that---stuff.

Then laying a finger aside of his nose,
He gave the pipes a couple more blows;
He looked at the chimney he'd come down before,
Said, "The hell with this--I'll go out the door!"

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of Scotch thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, e'er he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all--and a Piping Hot night!"
