I finally decided to take my music more seriously. I will be posting new music up there every week for as long as i can manage it.
So, we wrapped up our insanely successful run of Hedwig on Sunday! EVERYONE in the cast and crew did a wonderful job bringing the show to life. We had crazy, rock star standing ovations for every show to prove it. I can finally check that "be a rock star" box off of my bucket list as a result.

Next up, i will be making my return to live theatrical directing this weekend with the 24 Hour Play Festival at the Jepson Center for the Arts in Savannah, GA. Tickets will be $15 at the door at 7:00PM. I wish I could tell you what the show is about, but we won't know until that day! It's all part of the fun or producing one act plays in 24 hours.

I will also be re-starting my horror theater project: "The Crimson Chamber" this week. The venue and the theater company that produced Hedwig has expressed an interest in hosting the show, so we can finally move forward with the script! So far, the basic plot outline is complete. I will keep everyone posted as the project progresses.

I am also talking to a very talented Director of Photography to shoot a script written by my favorite writing team of Ryan Brown, myself and VC Brannen. If this takes off, it will be in FULL 1080p HD. it will be my bread and butter genre of neo-noir. Hopefully I will have more details by the end of October for this one.

Finally, I am starting a small swing combo with some friends from SCAD. We had our first mini-rehearsal today and for just three instruments, it sounds pretty darned sweet. I don't know when we will be ready to play, but hopefully it will be soon.

-AG3

So. A week after the thing is over, I finally have our entry up on YouTube.

[link]

Please forgive the bars and tone. They were required for submission. I will link DA accounts to DA people involved in the production. Considering the genre we drew, i don't think we did too bad of a job in 48 Hours. Everyone on the crew busted their ass to make something great and understandable. By most accounts, we achieved just that.

I will also recommend some of the other films from the event I have seen and enjoyed:
[link] - A Man About a Dog: Audience Choice Winner (my favorite of the ones on YouTube. I say it again. WATCH THIS ONE.)

[link] - Revenant: This didn't win anything but it is a great genre piece, if a little on the corny side. It probably SHOULD have won something, but a few of the awards were....confusing selections to say the least.

Sadly, I have not been able to find the film that took it all. It was crafted by local production company Perpombellar Productions. They don't make a habit of putting their stuff on public venues like YouTube. They do great work, though. And I am shocked they didn't receive best cinematography since the DP for that group is phenomenal.

-------------------

Would I do this again?
DEFINITELY NOT IN SAVANNAH. At least not with the same judges or admin. The whole competition was a mess of confusion and the pickup event was a bunch of rule-mongering and complaining. (even on my part, sadly)

I DO respect the city producer for taking the initiative on getting an official 48 hour contest out here, but i think there NEEDS to be more unification of what the official rules and requirements are and the paperwork we were handed at the pickup event. We had no less than THREE different version of what the competition wanted from us for our final render. The result for us was turning in a piss-poor resolution version of our project that was CODED TO THEIR SPECS. Then i found out that it can be ANY file format we want as long as you can drop it in a timeline. Great. Thanks for the heads up. Oh yes, and did I mention that one team got to re-draw their genre AFTER everyone had locked theirs in because of a technical oversight on the part of the local chapter? That does not seem fair to me. no sir.

Hopefully, next years competition will be better organized and less confusing for all involved. And hopefully, we won't get stuck with trying to figure out how to make a fantasy genre film in Savannah, GA.

-AG3

So...the time has come to close another chapter in my life. It's time for me to return home to the West Coast. This time, I will be returning under my own power, will and into my own place away from my father and brother. All it took was a good friend getting married and a life-affirming night of dancing with an amazing woman to wake me up.

This might seem rash to some people, but I've been assured by many of my friends that I'm not being impulsive, I've been thinking about this move for a very long time. I have all the equipment I need to shoot my own films. I run a small, profitable design business. I met enough neat folks to make rent doable. My lease is running out soon and I don't have any real career opportunities here.

Also, I miss being whole. Gazing at the ocean as it pounds into the beach, sitting on my board while I wait for the PERFECT moment to strike. I miss roaming in the hills of the California wilderness, wondering if anyone will ever find me. If it matters. I miss climbing, I miss playing random jazz sessions with fellow musicians, I miss the street performers, I miss staying up late with nothing but my guitars and my surfboard for company.

I miss being 100% ME.

*******************************

I do NOT, however, miss the smog-caked air and stench of feces that permeates Los Angeles like an unwashed baseball cap. No sir. Not one bit. I'll just have to hold out and hope I can make it to Northern CA one day.

-AG3

It should still be very simple to find everything, but i won't have to direct people to a "/title" style address. That stuff will probably stay for professional purposes so clients don't get bogged down with work irrelevant to their needs.

----------
LIFE + ART
----------
I will be showing some photos at Savannah's DeSoto Row gallery this weekend! The reception is Friday from 6:00PM - 10:00PM. I won't be there for the first hour or so because I will be at another shoot. The finished "1950s Housewife" images along the lines of the Cosmopolitan BBQ image will be hanging there in oversized glory. Prints will also be on sale, so please come if you can.

I will be posting the full series at AG3 Online after the show closes for everyone to check out.
In addition, please do show support to my collaborator Carrie Padgett for getting me involved with this fun little project. DA is just losing it's appeal to me now that I am trying to get more professional work.

As great as it is to have someplace to post my work, DA is terribly organized and I can't show this to serious clients or potential employers without having to apologize afterward. After all, I do a LOT of things from music to photography to video and i can't show that in a neat, professional manner here.

Long story short, if i haven't said hello or commented on stuff, it's because I never log on anymore.

Now for the interesting social excercise:

I stole this from Ricky, who took it from one of his friends. It's an interesting chain:

"Leave a comment and I will...

a) tell you why I befriended you,
b) associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, etc.,
c) tell you something I like about you,
d) tell you a memory I have of you,
e) ask something I've always wanted to know about you,
f) tell you my favorite pic of yours,
g) in return, you must post this in your journal. (OPTIONAL)"

With me, since i love breaking chains, I will not hold anyone to "g)". In fact, I encourage you not to unless you wish to do the same for others.

Oh yeah, and I'm working on my first themed Photo essay thing to hang at the Victory and Skidaway Starbucks. More info when I get the details from my boss.

-AG3

Copy/Pasted from my Facebook Page:

So, once again I see many people tagging me and urging me to stop the Orphaned Works Bill. Once again, I wonder how many people sat through the entire 60 minute dry, boring session of Congress i watched when this bill first re-emerged a few months back.

Not to insult anyone, but it seems as though many people are making a huge misunderstanding of what the bill actually means for us little guys trying to eek out a living with our art. Zero.

Unless the bill has seen some dramatic overhaul since I watched the sessions for it (which it may very well have), there is not some plot to steal or orphan the works of countless artists the world over for high profit. The rundown of the bill actually goes something like this, if i understand correctly:

1. To be an orphaned work, every reasonable method of searching for the copyright holder must be attempted and documented. This does not include a magic computer program search. This is the same kind of old fashioned library scouring and records digging that, say, documentary makers and research institutes already perform on every piece of media they use.

2. To even qualify for the right to use an orphaned work, you must prove your identity as a non-profit organization, student, educator, or historian. This is actually GOOD for those of us still in college, since this means we can use media and stock footage in your projects WITHOUT obtaining the rights to use a piece of media if you have already tried the proper channels and haven't turned up the copyright owner. This is actually a specific example used in the House proceedings I watched. Another group of targeted users with this bill are independent filmmakers and documentary makers without millions of dollars to pour into research.

3. if an orphaned work is used, the user MUST include a logo similar to the copyright logo that designates the work as orphaned so if an owner does emerge, that owner can approach the user to deal with any legal issues that may have come up. This means that if an entity DOES use an orphaned work, they are still held accountable in the instance a copyright holder does show up. The user is never really getting a free pass to using a work unless no one bothers to claim the rights to that work.

And really, that is it. The bill in a nutshell is pretty simple. Most of the hour long session was a debate over the how and why of enacting the bill and what constituted an orphaned work then breaking down the bill itself. And yes, even the fears of pirates running off with millions of artists life's work was brought up and addressed. Everyone in the room seemed pretty unanimous about avoiding that kind of situation at any cost.

So, how do we avoid being orphaned? The same thing we've always had to do. Watermark your work with your contact info, MAKE SURE PEOPLE CAN EASILY CONTACT YOU, and ADVERTISE the heck out of yourself so people KNOW WHO YOU ARE. The more people are looking at your work and associating your name and face with it, the easier it will be for your work to be spotted if it is floating around for sale somewhere you don't know about. It is more than just self-advertising, it is good business practice.

Below I will include a link to all of the documentation on the government copyright website as well as a link to the latest hearing on Orphaned Works. Please read through these if the issue is important to you and make your own conclusions rather than copying and pasting links to auto-generated letters. If you still feel like writing to your congressman either in favor or against the bill, write one using your own words armed with the knowledge gained by your own research. Those are always the best letters.

Respectfully,
AG3

[link] - Orphaned works summary and history

[link] - The actual Hearing from May of this year.
Hey there everyone. First off, yes, I kind of died for a while. I haven't posted anything new in months save for the holiday card. I have been working hard at surviving and haven't had time for art for myself.

Most of this time has been spent on web development, audio/video editing and comics. The new website will launch on Thursday and I will link it here. I am very happy with our work on this one even though it has taken the better part of a year of back and forth with the client and too many changes in direction than I can list here. I can't complain, though. We got paid quite a bit for it. o.O

I am also about to start another large flash commission that I won't be able to post unless I can find a simple way of shrinking it for DA use. I will announce who the client and what the project is once I get the final approval and the retainer check is in the old bank account.

Also, i spent the last week and a half in Tennessee, so my apologies to my friends if i have not looked at any of your work. There was just too much to catch up on (124, to be exact. o.O) and i just cleared the history. In that week I finally got some pencils and inks done for the new AitRW comic and am starting to hand them off to the colorist for the finishing touches. I will post those as soon as they are ready for viewing. Every I have showed the script to loves the writing I am doing for the book and the artwork should be just as great to match.

And with all of that out of the way, I am out and back to work!

So, I haven't been updating anything lately. There are three reasons for this: 1. Busy with commisioned work. 2. Busy trying to find a W-2 job so I can pay rent. 3. I have been feverishly working on a portfolio to submit to Pixar for a Graphic Design position.

The portolio is done and I've got a bit of down time between commisions as I wait for the checks to arrive in the mail, so I should have time to update this week. I don't think i will get the job since I don't have any of that high-profile "I designed for X magazine for umpteen years" or "I made the logo for this multi-billion dollar corporation." stuff on my resume. Hell, I didn't even finish school. But that's not a reason to not try. So anyhoo, cross your fingers or hope/pray for me or whatever it is that you do because I would really like to have a true career now. Hell, I'm 25. I need to start earning some sort of decent and steady pay soon if I plan to stay alive.

*****
NOTE
*****

From here on out, you will see me refer to people or companies 'owning' some of my images. This means the client has either bought the negative from me and physically owns that picture or has paid me to create artwork for them. As a result, they retain copyright for it. Note that I am was still responsible for taking the photo or creating the artwork. I'm not hijacking someone else's work and claiming it as my own.

What this means for viewers is that especially under these conditions, redistributing of those images is certainly not allowed. I'm only allowed to show them since I am the artist and always ask my clients to show pieces before I use them here or in my portfolio. Also, in the case someone does want a print of an image someone owns, i can't sell one. You would have to contact the copyright holder of the image and buy it from them.

Hello everyone out there in DA land!

I am just putting up a new batch of photography from my trip to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge with evenstar785. [link]

Sadly, the memory card on her camera was pretty tiny so i couldn't get all of the imagery I wanted. I hope to make a return trip to the location with a plan in mind and a much better camera to snap some shots of all the actual wildlife there since the trail is pretty far away from where the animals hang out.

I am also going to announce that I will start selling prints of my photography if there is enough intrest in buying it. Prints will be sold and printed by myself, however since I can charge about the same as DA, get better quality prints and actually turn a profit from my work instead of having DA take most of the money.

If you want prints, just let me know which peice you would like and we will talk size and cost. For this reason, I am going to start adding serial #s to the photo titles for easy reference. Since most of my photos don't have titles, this shouldn't be difficult.

That's all for now from the land of AG3. Thanks for your time and please help spread the word about me if you like my work!

1. NEW STUFF!!
*************

a. Graphic Design Commisions

This is kind of old news, but new to pretty much anyone who knows me on DA. I am a professional graphic designer. That being said, if there is anything you need done that involves logos, signage, invoices, business cards, etc. I will be more than happy to take on commisions! My going rate for freelance design is currently $25 per hour billed in 30 minute increments. I won't bore you with the sales pitch and leave it at that. ^_^

b. Finders Weepers, the movie!

I have a new short film in the works for 2007. It will be a 30-45 minute screen adaptation of the play "Finders Weepers" I directed over the summer. The play was well-recieved with a lot of laughs and I hope to achieve the same effect on screen! The script is complete and storyboarding is slated to be completed in early 2007. Principal photography should begin around Summer of '07. I'll post more info on this when it's available.

c. Potential revival of "Adventures in the Real World."

Once upon a time, when I couldn't write very well but had some good concepts, there was a little comic I tried to make by myself called "Adventures in the Real World." That was when I realized doing something alone in art was nigh impossible in the world of storytelling. Fortunately, there was a small group of friends and fans who kept pestering me about where that comic went to and now there are a couple of amazing artists who are interested in helping me make an AitRw comic.

With any luck, they will actually get some work done on the sample script I handed them and we will form a mighty team where I will focus on finally writing the damne thing so everyone who missed the book can find out what happens to my cartoon doppelganger and his strange little friends. Also, any artists out there who are interested in drawing for me can ask for the same packett and script I handed to the current applicants and I will gladly send it. This story has been my baby for quite a long time and contains all of those funny romantic comedy type moments everyone seems to be pestering me to make. More info when the new year hits!

*************
2. OLD STUFF!!
*************

b. The Bard's Tale!

This is a quickie. Just announcing that we seem to be on track for our 2007 first draft deadline. There are many people interested in lending a hand for the show, so things look promising so long as we can get a decent script out! Given the source material and the talent of the writing team, this shouldn't be an issue. ^_^

And that's it for this installment of the life and times of AG3. On a side note, I have officially regestered my trade name for Offshoot Entertainment. 2007 is going to be a neat and interesting year indeed as we gear up for actually forming a production company with projects being made! See ya all next time!

I just got permission from Brian Fargo to adapt "The Bard's Tale" ([link]) (Playstation 2/X-Box) into a stage production for 2008!

I am uber-ecstatic and in total bliss. Anyone who wants to be on board for the show should let me know. This is going to be one hell of a production!

Well, this week the One Act Play Festival goes up. The show will run Thursday, August 31 - Saturday, Sept 2nd.

Admission is $10.00 and the theatre is located at this address:
703D Louisville Rd
Savannah, GA 31415

For ticket information, please call the Savannah Actor's Theatre directly at this number:
912.232.6080

The show I am directing; "Finders, Weepers," will be the last show to hit the stage. If you would like to come, I highly reccomend coming on Saturday since the best show is always on closing night in theatre and if I've got friends coming to see my work, I would perfer you see it in its best possible form. ^_^
I do however, understand that $10 may be a bit much for people on a budget, so my feelings will not be hurt if you can't make it. I may, however, proceed to go cry in a corner like a good little artist and fill my angst quota for the month.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, it is official. I will be directing in the SAT One Act plays which will run on Sept 1 and 2. I've got a pretty sizeable six person comedy, so it should be a blast.

Also, Sept marks the deadline for the first draft of new short film I have been working on here in Sav with one of my friends. This first draft will determine if we can actually get money for this thing, so this next month and a half or so is definitely going to be an intense time. @_@

For more info on the One Act Plays, hop on over to either SAT's website or thier myspace account.
or

I will be posting more info when it gets closer to the show date, so keep your eyes peeled fore more info and pictures from rehersals!

Other than that, I won't be heading out to San Diego in July like I hoped due to a few roadblocks that popped up. (leftovers from home.)
Also, anything Paradise Lost or film related is currently frozen since my computer/portable office is still sitting in West Covina, cut off from the rest of the world. I will try and get some of the art I've been working on lately scenned and up here using one of my roomie's computers, though. Should be some neat stuff for you. The operative word is: "Watercolor."

Anyhoo, my apologies for being dead to anyone keeping track of my projects, but shit happens and people go without a computer for a while.
Also, I have a new phone. Those who need the new number should message me.

And now for a bit of news some of you may have been waiting for: The "Paradise Lost" comic project gets an official completion date of April 30!

The sad part is, due to budget constraints there will not be a full book. The good part is, the book will be 8 pages in color with a front and back cover, project statement on the inside flap and a cast/crew list and headshots on the inside back flap.

The final dimensions for the comic will be 5.5in x 8.5in.

I will be posting this up on my SCAD student space for digital viewing, but if you want a physical copy of the mini-comic, it looks like it will be around $6 - $12 depending on my ability to haggle with the local Kinko's staff about double sided color printing on tabloid paper. Since we have no budget, each book will be lovingly hand cut, folded and stapled just for you if you want one.

Final prices and stats will pop up on the completion date, so keep an eye here for details and news.

This may not be relevant to anyone who isn't from the LA Metro area (about 95% of people i know), but I just finished watching "Crash." This could also be known to people outside of LA as: "That really racist movie that didn't make any sense and won a best picture Oscar for some reason."

Obviously, I didn't like the movie. The music, although beautiful on it's own, is very overbearing in the film and is a constant presence in what should have been a film with little, if any soundtrack. The editing is also very, very sporadic and will confuse anyone who doesn't have a perfect split second memory. Also, for all the quick jumping around there is in the film, it felt like a three hour movie although it says on the box it's about an hour and a half.

However, for all of the technical faults, I think everyone who is thinking about moving to Southern California should watch it, because it may as well have been a documentary called: "A day in the life of Los Angeles." It will crush all of your hopes and dreams of finding happiness in this city because, quite frankly, there is none to be found and the people suck. Now, this might all seem like random bitching, but there is indeed a point.

That point is this: Unless you live in or are familiar with the LA area, Crash means absolutely diddly rat shit squat. There's no plot, all of the characters are horrible people and there is no closure. EVen the people you think you will like turn into evil bastards and the evil bastards who turn around and do something good will make you feel sick.

If you DO live in LA like me, well, this movie hits you in the gut because you know it's all true, regardless of how many critics pan it for being overly racist, ugly, and unredeeming. Most of those said critics are probably living in another state and haven't been living here. Sure, all of the stories intertwining is not at all real, but the things that are said and done in that movie can and do happen on a daily basis. LA is not pretty and nice and full of hope.

LA is a big, cold, open sore of paranoia, racism, classicism, filth, grime and everything bad you could ever imagine about humanity. This place turns even the nicest of folks into devils and gives those who are already devils the time of thier lives.

For that reason and for that reason alone, though I thought the movie as a whole is cannon fodder for most people, it succeeds in its mission: to paint a portrait of Los Angeles and the people who inhabit it. I

f you want to see what life in this town is like, rent the movie and give it a watch. Just don't be expecting any snazzy storytelling.
To those who think you are traped and can't have it any worse. For those times, just think about the following and think if this guy can have a sense of humor, dammit, so can I!

I heard this on NPR on the drive home today. They were interviewing one of the new Orleans residents whose home had just been obliterated by hurricane Katrina of 05. Specifically, they were doing a story about a govenment program to give grants to folks whose home locations have been deemed unfit for rebuilding. When asked how he felt about having to move and rebuild, he had this to say (the quote is not by any means exact):

"...before the hurricane i was thinking about remodeling anyway. Looks like God decided to give me a jump start and have the hurricane give me a fresh start."

Now. If THAT guy can be in god spirits after having his home and all of his belongings stripped way from him, dammit you can stop cutting yourself because the girl you like won't talk to you.

Well, today I start packing to leave for CA. I was really looking forward to it up until yesterday. Now I wish I could put returning off until September to let some things blow over.

Anyway, as far as projects go:

-Short films: I canned one of them because the camerawork was lacking. Something I couldn't really help seeing as how it was a very short shoot with way too much setup time. It's a shame, too. It could have been fabulous.

The second one is one simply entitled "Assassin" that will be edited when I return to CA. It's in High Definition so it'll take some extra effort to find equipment to edit on. Also, this will be my first peice in the traditional motion picture aspect ratio of 2.33x1! (that's what you see in movie theaters. The super-wide stuff) This one came out great and I can't wait to finish and share it with everyone.

-Art: I have been working feverishly on a Christmas mini-comic to hand out to people for the holidays and for others to purchase if they feel like supporting my work. Sadly, I have done absolutely no work on it due to recent events and I won't be able to touch it until I get to CA. It'll be late, but it should be worth it.

-The video game: Design work is mostly complete. Now we just need to wait for the physics engine to be built so we can get to actual development. This'll probably take a while. I will try to get a proper website up for the project to keep tabs on it.

And that about wraps it up. I will miss everyone in Savannah and I'll see you guys back on the West Coast before X-mas. Hopefully this will be a shorter trip than I originally planned.

So today is the big day. Full crew, complicated equipment and an actress cancelled yesterday. Geez. Talk about your complications. This should still be a great shoot, though and you will all see the fruits of our labor soon enough.

Also, I am returning home to Los Angeles to a better job, my grandparents, I will actually be home for X-mas this year, and, of course, that special someone who knows who she is.

My last day in Savannah as a resident will be Dec 19th and we will have a grand road trip home filled with fun, freezing cold, and graffiti at the Cadillac Ranch! Pictures will surley be posted of our adventures, but sadly I can't turn it into a documentary for practice.

I will save my Savannah tears and goodbyes for another post. (though I won't be PERMANENTLY gone. I will come back every couple of months or so for video shoots and work on our video game project.)

The shooting days are Nov 14th and 16th. Leave me a note or something if you are in Savannah and you want to be in the films.

More details to come when I get organized with my producer.

Good Omens: The Screenplays!

So, I just borrowed and finished "Good Omens," by one Mr. Terry Pratchett and one Mr. Neil Gaiman. It is now probably my favorite book of all time thanks to it touching on my two previously favorite things: Douglas Adams and theology.

I always found theology a very humorous subject in general (that is why I was going to minor in it back in CA) and this book is a great example of some of the good fun that can be had with it while still making a very valid and moral point.

Also, I don't think Neil Gaiman had much to do with the book since the writing oozes Pratchetts humor so I've no idea why his name appears first on the book cover. I can see where Gaiman fits in as far as the mythos and character development goes, but the man is simply not funny. (That is perfectly fine, though. He is a stellar author in other genres) Also, I read somewhere that Pratchett did most of the actual writing since this was written pre-1990 internet and e-mail boom and most of the collaboration was by phone.

Long story short, I liked it so much I am making three screenplays from it using the two main characters; Crowley and Aziraphale. For those famliar with the book, I'm doing the duckpond scene, the opening scene, and the drinking scene which shortly follows the duck pond scene. (the duck pond scene is currently half finished)

Now, these will not be fanfiction, I'm adapting the scenes for the screen. Hopefully, I can convince a rather large group of people to work on at least the duck pond scene for an HD short film for honor and glory. i think it would be quite challenging and fun, which is plenty of an excuse to get me going on a film. For those who say it isn't creative to simply adapt another's words to the screen: Bit me. It's damn hard trying to figure out what bits will work in speech and movement and adding in cuts and camera angles to suit the book. Besides, I'm not taking credit for writing the thing.

So yeah, I am back in Savannah, GA after some agonizing months in SoCal remembering why I hate that place so much.

Sadly, I found a couple of good reasons to love it RIGHT before I left. One of them I remember everytime I check the surf forecast at Tybee Island and see flat, glassy water. Yeah, I miss being on the West Coast for that reason. Surfing was my release from the stress of the week. It's great to be able to just grab your board and go whenever you may feel the need instead of having to wait like a rabid dog for the tiniest little three foot swells once a month or so.

The second reason is someone who made living in that stinkhole about 1,000,000x cooler and way more pleasant. And that is all I will say on that one. You know who you are.

ANyhoo, my computer has been ating weird and I have no Adobe products that work. Need to get all that back up and running before I can update. I will keep you all posted.

So... last week at work it was my duty to fix another broken PC. Well, help fix one, anyway. i had to help our IT guy Ghost a compy from the other end of the facility. it all went to shit because the PC that needed to be fixed didn't have a CD-ROM, so I had to rip out the hard drive and temporarily wire it to the um... host PC?

Anyway...the short end of it is, i didn't think it was possible to cultivate life on a hard drive, but lo and behold, I found lichen and lime buildup on the aluminum parts of our 4 year old HD! Score!

So yeah...they decided to just replace it. I just thought it was a funny anecdote.

In other news, two weeks until my return to Savannah and a new flow of artwork! be looking forwad to that.

So recently, i had the luxury (if you can call it that) to see all of Southern California in one day. I started at my home, then onto Santa Monica, then north to the San Fernando Valley, then back down South to Torrance, then Back To Santa Monica, then off to marina Del Rey.

At the worst moment in that day I realized how much I loathe this place. i dunno why people still flock here. Rent is insane, smog is bad, and as I realized during my really long drive, EVERYTHING LOOKS THE SAME. Nearly eight hours straight of driving though ungodly amounts of Southern California traffic and I actually got lost with a map because the Valley looks like Santa Monica, which looks like LA, which looks like Torrance, which looks like home, which looks like El Monte, which looks like Anaheim. You should get the idea by now.

The place is so cramped with concrete and houses it makes you forget that there was ever space between cities at one point in time. Now the whole thing is one sick, concrete pizza with house upon houses dotted with skyscrapers like some screwed up urban farmland that grows cancer instead of food. I mean, I remember when I was little how there was generally undeveloped land between cities and I knew where the end was. The sad part is, that was only ten years ago.

Also, I surf. I love it so much I bought my own board. We're supposed to have some of the best surf here on the west coast but the water smells so bad and has so much shit floating around in it that you don't want to swim. In fact, the county puts up no swimming signs on the beach because of the mess. I still go in though. After all, if it wasn't for surfing, I'd be going nuts about now. i also remember how the water was when I was little. Sure it was kinda dirty, but it was more kelp and sand than cans, bottles, and plastic bags.

So, have any grand misconceptions about how wonderful SoCal is? Leave 'em. Don't listen to the hype. The only people who want to live here are people that don't come from here or people who work in Entertainment. Everyone I know that' lived here all thier life wants to get the hell out; including me.

ANyhoo, if you're wondering where the art has been, well, my computer is still living in GA so I can't get any work done here at home. I should have it back within the next month, though, so keep your eyes peeled.

In other news, I will not be returning to SCAD. I haven't been able to find any type of financial aid aside from a $3,000 federal loan, $2,000 in SCAD scholarships, and a measley $1,000 form the National Dean's List. $35,000 - $6,000 = no school for me.

In art-related news:
Things did not go as well as planned last quarter. None of theprojects I was organizing worked out due to a major production by the theatre department at school. Kinda hard to make films with no actors available. : \

I will also be working on a screenplay this summer for a competition in fall. It's a pretty good concept, so here's hoping I can toss it onto paper in a decent fashion for some prize money. It's a horror story set in Savannah, GA. It is taking a few principles from a certain video game series I'm a big fan of.

Anyhoo, that's it for now. Things are going to be very quiet on the film side ofthings for a while since I'm out of school. Here's hoping I can go back for another year to make some more.

Well, the school year has come to a close. I've had an okay run this year. (8 films is nothing to sneeze at!)

Sadly, I will probably never be returning to SCAD or any other college. I haven't turned up anything in the way of financial aid of any sort after almost three years of desperate searching, so I may have to call the school thing quits, which may also be the end of my filming days.

Anyhoo, to all of my SCAD buddies I met: I will miss you all dearly and I am sadened that I will not be able to continue my studies in your company. This has been the best group of friends I've made in a school and you have all made Savannah feel like home for me.

If anyone ever wants to visit LA, feel free to drop me a line and I might be able to hook you up with a free pass to a theme park or two. ; )

So, with a heavy heart I say goodbye and wish you all the best in your studies. Keep in touch and see you out in the big, bad world.

This is for all of you guys who I've been trying to assemble for the Hitchhiker's guide movie tomorrow (Sunday) at 1:15 or 1:45PM at the Regal 10 cinema by the Savannah mall.

Here is the plan:
1. WAKE UP!!
I know a few of you are late sleepers, so I must emphazize that we need to be up and adam by 11:00AM at the latest so we can grab breakfast and head to the theater.

2. Meet up and BREAKFAST!!
As outlined above, everyone should meet up at Cafe SCAD for some good old bonding around the breakfast table. 11:00AM sharp is the call time so we can get out and get tickets. By the looks of things, we will have anywhere from 7-10 going.

3. TRANSPORTATION!
Head out to the theater by 11:45AM. We should be there by 12:15 at that rate, which gives us at least an hour buffer before the flick.

4. MOVIE!!
Sit back and take in the film. Hopefully, it will be as enjoyable as the book. ^_^

5. BACK TO WORK!
Back to homework. : ( Or maybe we could kill some more time with mini-golf. That would rock.

***************

WHAT TO BRING:
1. Money for the flick. I believe Matinee is $7 after taxes. I'm not too sure.

2. YOU MUST BRING A TOWEL!!!! Make sure your towel speaks of you. Sure, you could bring just any towel, but it would be fun if everyone brought a custom towel for sport and random silly pictures. Heck, I'm gonna go to the movie in my PJs with my towel for the maximum effect. ^_^ I have some extra towels for those who may not have one.

3. WEAR PJ's! Not necessary, but should be fun. ^_^

If there are any questions, give me a buzz on my cell phone. That number should be in your DA inboxes for those who have accounts.

That's it and I look foreward to having a blast! ^_^

In another bit of fil mnews, oen of my short films has been included in the Amazon.com Short Film Festival. The short in question is my 16mm suspense film "Mirage."

The competition will run from April 19th - May 20 through the Amazon.com website. Unfortunately, there is no way to view my film by choice. Films are randomly cycled for each person that goes to the website at [link]

On the plus side, that means no one can horde votes, so the competition should be fair. On the downside, the judges are the general public rather than a panel of professional judges, so chances are up in the air since I don't have a funny or action driven film.

If y'all want to support, you can go to the website starting April 19th and hope for my film. if you don't get mine, then maybe you will see some good stuff.

*****

On that note, I have started re-shooting "Mirage" in widescreen digital video. That's the version I will be sticking up online rather than the 16mm version, which has a few flaws I am not happy with.

Also if you haven't checked it out yet, please view "Black Coffee" off to the left and send some feedback my way.

Thanks in advance and drop a comment on the main DA page if you happen to catch Mirage at Amazon.com.

So yesterday was the big day. 12 hours of non-stop play producing action. Everything appeared to goo off lovely, I was fortunate to have a great cast and awesome Stage Manager, and from what I could hear, our show went over rather well considering we were the only dramatic play out of 12 or so others.

SCAD Beecon ( [link] ) was also on hand to tape the event, so there may very well be some place online to get footage of the shows in the near future.

Also, I have uploaded one of my short films to my student webspace. You can get the Windows Media encoded version of my short "Black Coffee" here: [link]

The running time is 12 minutes long and the file is about 29MB. Please do not stream the file from the location. You also need Windows Media Player 10 to play the file. I will add a placeholder Deviation with a screencap at a later date for comments.

That should be it for now. Stay tuned for more updates on the film side of things as I get my student webspace rolling.

Lately I've been wondering...

1. ***********************
Why do people only ever call me or drop by when they want something from me?

Just once I would like to actually hear from someone who just wants to visit. For someone to just say "Hey Al. I just popped in to say hi and hang out."

Just once I want tp pick up the phone or answer the door and not hear, "Hey! Could you do me a favor?" or "Hey Al, I need you to do something for me."

2. ************************
Wow...classes suck ass this quarter. I hate going to school now. Even last quarter when I had english and rudementary graphic design I had more fun than now. I never though I would get to a class in my major and not have any desire whatsoever to do well. This is bad, seeing as how I'm on Academic Warning and I need to do well this quarter. It's not like I can just drop all of my classes and put it off until next quarter, either. I'm not exactly a short drive from school.

3.**************************
My personal life sucks ass. I need to re-learn how to live for my work and only my work. Things were a lot easier when I only cared about my work.

[EDIT]
4.***************************
Why in the world do women wear high heels? I personally think they are trashy, hard to walk in and tools for lying about your height to a man. Huzzah for women who don't wear high heels.

Another quarter, another set of films.

I may have found a solution for getting my films up. I found a program that converts AVI files into highly compressed Flash video files, so I'm going to play with that to see about getting one or two of my shorter films up here.

In other news, I've been having apeloads of trouble sleeping lately, so forgive me if I haven't been getting back to anyone's comments or DA galleries. I've just been feeling really poopy for the last few days and it doesn't look like it's going to end soon.

In film news -
I've got three projects planned for this quarter, though I haven't been able to get a hold of actors and actresses that said they would work for me before break. That might set things back a bit.

One project seems all ready to go, though, and that is my first animated short. The script and the storyboards are ready and now it's time for all the hard work of animating. It's going to be done in Flash with a lot of help from another DA member, Lithe-Fider. It should be good and funny stuff. : )

Other:
I will be directing for the 24-Hour playfest at SCAD this quarter. That event will be April 9th and 10th and will be the first theatrical thing I've directed in about 4 years. Should be good to get back to thatre again. ^_^ Make sure to clear your schedules for the 10th so you can come out and show your support!

Holy crap, it's spring break. This means I may only have two or three months of school left....ever.

It's a weird feeling, really. I mean, I've been doing the college thing for....2...3...this'll be four years. And you know what? I don't have a degree. I don't quite know what to think of that a lot of the time. It's not that I don't want to finish or that I'm doing bad. Hardly. Although this quarter didn't go well at all, last quarter I had a 4.0 and previously I maintained a 3.8 at my old Junior College for a year.

It's that damn money thing. College seems to be some sort of pip-dream now. Something only a select, privileged few get to do even though it seems to be necessary in today's world.

I know people who get stoned off thier ass day in and day out, go lazily though thier classes and have accomplished jack crap professionally who get a free ride because thier parents are rich, they can get loans, or they can paint like Rembrant fresh out of high school. Here I am, busting my ass, scratching and clawing my way through school and turning out some of the best work in my entire grade level and I don't even get a Student loan over $2,000 because on paper it doesn't look like I need it.

It's times like this when I wonder if all this trouble is even worth a damn. Even if I can't go back, should I bother? It's obvious something doesn't want me to finish my education. Hell, I'm a film student. if I can land another job back in the industry, why bother, right?

Before this turns into a large rant, I'll just say this: I think it's worth it. I've made a lot of good friends here at SCAD and have worked with many talented crew members in my short time here.

I guess that's why I'm bitching. I'm being selfish. it's not that I feel I need a silly peice of paper to prove I learned how to make movies. Heck, I'll have eight good short films at the end of the year that prove I know how.

No, it's that I don't want to lose these people I've met. All the friends I now have. I've felt like I belonged here more than anywhere I've lived and I'm tired of not getting too close to people becase of my fear of not being able to come back. I want to give myself to everyone I know here without having to worry about being there the next quarter or not.

In the end, I want to be there for some of the best friends I've made in my life and the people who may be counting on me in the future as a director. Call me selfish, but dammit, is wanting to be there with people you care about such a bad reason to be that way?

In film news, I should have one of my films up on [link] sometime in the next couple of months so people can actually see it without having me mail them a DVD.

Also, I have submitted one of my films to no less than four different festivals, so you can all cross your fingers for me and hope I make it in.

On that note: I am in dire need of a music composer so i can submit one of my films into something other than a student film category. Right now I don't have any original music, so it is holding the project back from what I can do with it. If any of you out there are musicians (REAL musicians, not stupid punk garage band players), I could use the help, but I can't pay anything. Your payment would be exposure from festival showings and the like.

Here's to better things in the future.

I'll bet people are wondering one thing: "Why haven't you posted any art or photos?!"

Well, there are three very specific reasons and all of them are film-related. I'm currently working on three seperate projects at the moment and penning a fourth.

I'm up to my furrowed eyebrows in film projects and I wouldn't have it any other way. ^_^

Also, being one of the publicity coordinators for the inter House Council here at SCAD is pretty darned demanding since I have two film festivals to organize before the year is out. o.O

So what EXACTLY does Al have on his plate that y'all should care about, hmm? Well, the first is this for all of you SCAD students:

*****
February 11th - Student Film Night.
at around 9:00PM IHC will be hosting an evening of SCAD created short films and (hopefully) there will be much cake or some other munchies of a similar nature. Yours truly will be the MC and this will be the public debut of my first major short: Black Coffee. Also, there are plenty of talented folks that will be showing off thier stuff if I have my way. And I will...oh yes I will.
The venue will be in one of three places: Cafe SCAD (back room), Oglethorpe House Ballroom or the Turner House Confrence Room. Check back here for details.
*****

Film project #1 is a goofy, yet stylish Phantom of the Opera short that I have been asked to direct and perform in. Most of the pre-production is done and it should be a hoot and a half since i get to play the Phantom. ~_^

Film project #2 is a comedy about a frustrated kendo student who is struggling to learn something from his very cryptic and obscenely cliche instructor. This should be some good fun.

Film project #3 is.... A SECRET! ~_^ The only things I will say is that it will be scary, black and white, and silent.

Anyhoo, enough babbling for me. See you all if I can get a moment to do my rounds.
