I have been wanting to make a bit more of a conscious effort to post WIPs for my bigger pieces, and so I've been doing that lately... I feel looking at other artist's WIPs can be really valuable, and I usually learn a lot from how artists more skilled than me go through their process.

Example, here is a WIP from : [link] I feel it's really interesting to note how she builds up from a mess and gradually makes her drawing more solid from certain points, after blocking the whole thing in.

Does anyone else take captures of their WIPs? Share your latest one here, I am interested to see! Here is mine: [link]

Also, please read this, and do something good for someone in need : [link]

--------------

Kiriban: 100 000
Commissions: (On hold until I get my shit together)
Art Status: [link]
Mini FAQ: [link]

I don't know how you can progress from Spice Girls to bands like Mouldy Peaches, Modest Mouse or Phish, BUT APPARENTLY IT HAPPENS.

2. When it comes to my friends, I'm a total doormat

3. Scouts is slowly eating my life, and I am absurdly happy to let it do that.

4. I got my hands on a copy of Horses by Patti Smith the other day, and it's just one of those things where I feel like I came really late to a totally awesome party, where the novelty has sort of worn off for everyone already. Screw you guys.

5. I really hate checking my email and I don't know why.

6. I have, for as long as I can remember, had a habit of bouncing my leg when sitting down. It's an unconscious thing that often gets people asking if I'm cold, or gets my parents yelling at me to stop because the vibrations are shaking the car/table/couch.

7. I worked one month for Dominoes as a delivery driver, and hated it almost from day one. I couldn't bring myself to quit though, largely because three of my best friends also work there! It took the fact that my car broke down in a bad part of town on a delivery - while my parents were escaping from the most dangerous fire our country has seen - before I felt I had an excuse to quit... And even then, I blamed it on my parent's urging! (I'm a total coward!)

8. For someone who has lived 30 minutes away from the city all my life, visited it a lot when I was younger and now go to uni there, I sure am useless at finding my way around it. Which is stupid because Melbourne is quite literally a grid. It's not that hard to navigate.

I TAG YOU- YES, YOU, THE READER.

Also, please read this, and do something good for someone in need : [link]

--------------

Kiriban: 100 000
Commissions: (On hold until I get my shit together)
Art Status: [link]
Mini FAQ: [link]

For those of you who don't know, was involved in a car accident some time ago, and now suffers a terrible thing called "Locked in Syndrome". You can read more about her plight in this article: [link]

Anyway, and a few others are running a fundraiser drive. While I am tight on money myself, I want to pitch in.

SO. I am reopening myself for commissions... Sort of. I'm offering pictures that look something like this, of either yourself, your friends, or characters:
[link] [link] [link] [link]

I've dubbed them "Terrible Portraits". They are meant to be a bit of fun, and for $0.50 USD a pop, you can get as many as you like. They don't take me long to draw, so there is a fast delivery time. If you're willing to pay shipping to airmail a letter, I can even cut the thing out and send it to you.

ALL PROCEEDS OF THIS WILL GO TOWARDS THE SARA BAKER TRUST FUND

I make no profit off it. Think of this as a small donation to get something fun.

Send your 50c (or more, if you want more than one portrait or just want to be a good little duck!) donation via Paypal to: donate@sarascourage.org (with the subject "Donation") OR alternatively you can mail a cheque/money order to this address -

Sara Baker Trust Fund
#10350222753
Exchange Bank
8220 Old Redwood Highway
Cotati, CA 94931

After you've sent off the donation, let me know what you want, supply picture reference(s) and I will get going!

If you want them shipped, let me know and I will calculate how much it will cost (not much, as they should fit in an envelope). Payment for shipping should go to laura@renfrews.com (sorry, I will only accept Paypal!)

Cheers, guys.

--------------

Kiriban: 100 000
Commissions: (On hold until I get my shit together)
Art Status: [link]
Mini FAQ: [link]

I'm not big on omens or whatever, but I do like the idea of drawing on events to stop for thought, or alternatively, give you some drive to keep going.

Today was rather... Exciting I guess is the word. The house next to ours has seen a lot of action throughout the years - our family friends have lived there, a guy who used to work on his car at 2am lived there, one of the occupants after him actually died in there of a heart attack on mother's day one year. After that, the property was bought by developers who added a second unit in what was the backyard, and had our fence redone in the process.

Today, it caught fire.

No, serious, one of the neighbours heard the fire alarm going off, and came to investigate. By the time we cottoned on to the yelling outside, we came out to see some smoke billowing out one of the roof. And then the air conditioner. And then the windows and everywhere. My dad was calling the fire brigade as we could see flames starting to come out of it. The person who lives in the back unit moved her car out and so did I, not a moment too soon as the fire engines started coming in. By the time the fire was out, we had six fire trucks lining the street outside, a command car and three police cars. PRETTY INSANE. Luckily the tenant wasn't around (no one had seen him since he made a noisy exit around 4am Saturday morning, though someone put his bins out the other night), but the owner happened to be in the area and was somewhat shocked. We don't know what started it, but the place looks pretty burnt out.

Basically though, I'm using the event to start a metaphorical fire underneath me. I'm going to try and do my best to get out of this slump rather than stewing in it. Wish me luck

PS. God these IMVU ads shit the hell out of me.
I don't know whether it's the pressure of my many things going on at the moment (only just finished uni for the semester, I have my musical coming up, work, meant to be doing training for Scouts, going to Scouts in general, my 21st coming up which my mum wants me to plan out so it's spectacular, website requests for relatives, and my friends wanting me to remake a movie... The list of commitments goes on), or whether my time has just come but...

I've totally hit the wall in terms of art. I've had slumps before (I just got over a mini one, I thought), but this is just...

It's SO unlike a writing block, which is really weird for me. I know how to get around writing blocks, where it's generally a case of my inspiration running low.

I know exactly what I want to draw. I know what I want it to look like. I even know how the lines should look. For some reason, however, there's some massive miscommunication between my brain and my hand, and nothing is coming out right. Even just flat out copying from references, or even going back and drawing skeletons or impressions... All not working. I'm not entirely sure what has gone wrong, and I'm drawing blanks on how to fix the issue.

I have a bit of a back log on my art, including a contest prize which I wanted to get done relatively quickly. Not to mention I'm doing an 'introduction to drawing' class elective next semester, where the lecturer is infamously a bit of a dick, so I was hoping to come into the class with at least some skill behind me. So... This whole thing is really a bit of a problem for me. Art is usually a stress relief for me, but this whole thing is just adding to my issues. The fact that I feel I'm becoming worse instead of better is really worrying for me.

Has anyone gone through this problem before? What were your fixes that got you out of it?
CAN I BE CURED?!?!
Just a PLUG for this great little group I happened to stumble upon, which could use some promotion. I'm hoping to become a critic there as well, so it should be good times all round.

Basically, you become a member, and you can submit up to five artworks (old or new) for critique every week. If you become a critic, you send in at least five critiques for your specified categories each week! It's pretty cool, and definitely a good way to get your art out there. They also run semi-regular news features as far as I'm aware too

Anyway... sign up! Not too many, but enough and with people who I know will respond rather than people who will lose my comments in a mountain of "OMG KAWAII DESU!!!"... Largely because I have been feeling a little down in the dumps for perhaps not getting as many comments as I would like, but I don't particularly want to BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW about it, so I'm thinking that maybe it's because I don't really have a 'commenty' presence myself. I currently give 21 comments for every 10 I receive, but maybe I need to double it. I encourage anyone who feels the same about their artwork to do the same, it will make the world a better place or something 8D

--------------

Kiriban: 100 000
Art Status: [link]
Mini FAQ: [link]

Hey guys, so as you might know, I'm taking commissions again. Just as with last time, I'm getting little response (well... None at the moment).

Why am I taking commissions anyway? Well, firstly as my parents say, if I'm going to be putting time and effort into artwork for people, I should be trying to get something out of it (though they don't seem to grasp the concept of 'I'm doing this as a gift because I want to&#039, but also because I AM trying to save up to travel to the States, or at least try find a second source of steady(ish) income so I can eventually move out of home (hallelujah).

So my questions to you guys, who are my potential clients (maybe). Please be as honest as possible, my feelings will not be hurt:
-What sort of prices would you expect to pay for my art?
-What sort of quality assurance should I have on my commission page?
-What could I do that would make you want to commission me? (Note - if I do what you say here, DON'T feel it is necessary you commission me, think of this as for argument's sake)
-What sort of art examples would you need to see?
-Is my skill level actually up to commission standard?

Anything else you can add would be appreciated also!
Cheers.

--------------

Kiriban: 100 000
Commissions: [link]
Art Status: [link]
Mini FAQ: [link]

NOTE On hold until I get my shit together.

***I am looking for some, I guess, 'critique' on these prices. Please let me know if you believe they are unreasonable when compared to my current skill level ^_^

It's going to be holidays for me soon, so I figure that doing some commissions will be cool. A bit different to the last time I did them, largely because I now have set prices. All prices are in USD and should be paid by Paypal.

Please note, commissions where the art is to be used for commercial means WILL attract a larger fee.

Mini Commissions
These are quick things, give me a picture or photo of a character or person, a bit about them, and the payment into my paypal account (laura@renfrews.com). Because these are so small, it is probably cheaper for you to print them for yourself rather than having me print and ship them for you. I do not take long with these.

Terrible Portraits: 50c
Examples (offsite): [link] [link] [link] [link]
Basically just a quick sketch which is inked, the results of which are TERRIBLE beyond proportion. If you are desperate for one of these, but don't feel you can part with 50c... Note me and we'll talk turkey. Maybe.

Bookmarks: $1
These things will be done in cartoony style (eg. [link]), Flat colours (may be cell shaded or mono/duotoned depending on how it will look) and are 100x600 pixels (I will have them at a resolution so they should print up to a size you desire)

Normal Commissions
These are a little more detailed, and you will have x10 more input on how the finished piece turns out. If you want it printed and shipped, it will cost extra.
...And being a person in general, I guess. Lately I've been seeing a lot of people being complete... Well. Asses I guess is the word. It seems that not only do they not feel bad about their actions in their art and the way they present it (along with how they act about it), but I'm too often seeing people go, "What's the big deal?"

Have people really forgotten their values? Things that you can use to live a good moral life? I don't want to preach, especially not having a specific religion (as a lot of people in the Scouting organisation say you should)... But it seems like trying to be a 'good person' is too often overlooked, or misconstrued to mean that you should be a total doormat and let people just... Whatever.

In the art world, more specifically DA, your attitude towards the community and towards your artwork can significantly impact on the way people see you as both an artist and a person - if people don't like you, there's a chance they won't like your artwork either out of simple association.

PEOPLE AREN'T PERFECT. I know this (dude, I've broken these laws more than a few times), but just because you recognise that no one is perfect, does not mean that you should not hold them accountable for their actions. Expect of others what you expect of yourself - no more, no less. More importantly, you should expect yourself to occasionally, 'fall short of perfection' and be held accountable for that too. I certainly do, however much I might dislike it!

I propose, even if you're not a Scout, to consider the Scout laws. For those of you unfamiliar with them (most of you?), they were set out by Sir Robert Baden Powell (founder of the Scouting organisation), and are based on several things including: writings from Ernest Thompson Seton, the Bushido Code of the Japanese Samurai, laws of honour from the American Indians, the code of chivalry and Zulu fighters he had previously fought against. (Kudos to Wikipedia for that list). The laws have changed over time, and have slight differences in every country, but for the most part they have the same messages. I am basing this journal on the current Australian Scout laws.

You don't have to be a Scout to live a 'good' life.

1. A Scout is Trustworthy
Right up there at number one, a lot of leaders will tell you as a Scout, this is the most important rule to follow. People should be able to trust you, and trust your art. IT IS NOT HARD TO BE TRUSTWORTHY. Believe it or not, building a good rapport means simply being transparent and completely honest with yourself, and those who might ask questions about why you did something, etc. If you prefer not to tell them something, don't hide it - Tell them you feel awkward sharing that information, I hope you don't mind. One thing I've learnt in life is that most everything you hold back - your lies by omission - all come out eventually. If you don't want people to distrust you, it's best to be up front and straight forward about such things from the beginning.
If you lie about your feelings when you make an artwork, people won't trust your art as honest pieces. If you lie about the way you make your art, people won't trust your art or you yourself. It isn't hard to be trustworthy, but it's even easier for that trust to be broken, and every time you have to build it back up again, it becomes that little bit harder.

Honesty is the best policy

2. A Scout is loyal
Back when I was around 15, A Venturer who I was quite good friends with did something quite terrible and ticked me off big time (I mean, big time). While I might break the other Scout laws from time to time, I'm pretty proud to say that one of my best qualities as a person is that I'm loyal. At 15, my feeling of rage at this person was unfathomable, but it was also conflicted with the fact that I had been friends with them for quite some time, and I didn't want to lose that. A leader took me aside at a camp during this time and said to me, "Sometimes being loyal means standing your ground on an issue. Even if it means feeling bad, and perhaps your friendship will never be repaired, the best thing you can do for your friend is to stand by what you believe in. If they are loyal, they should recognise their wrongdoing and apologise - then you can forgive them. Sometimes, they might be right and you're unjustified for your feelings, but if you can look deep down in yourself, to your beliefs, and still honestly tell yourself that you're right, then eventually things will come out for the better."

In its traditional meaning, loyalty means sticking by your friends through thick and thin. Yes, you should stick by artists who you've built a rapport with by supporting their art, and sticking up for them when you think they have been wronged. However, with that said, you should not sit idly by if you know your friend has done something wrong. Someti...

Filled 8D

Just something to think of in the sort-of-near future... Not so sure if I will be doing it so soon!

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone is interested in doing some collabs with me? I'm not talking your classic "One of us does the lineart and the other does the colours" thing, but more of a building process with some more turn taking. Example:

1. Person A makes some lines, almost a thumbnail on paper
2. Person B expands this to a rough sketch
3. Person A turns this into lineart
4. Person B lays down flat colours in the medium of their choice
5. Person A Puts in some shading and a few details/textures.
6. Person B Puts in highlights and a few details/textures.

That's just an example though. I'm aiming to have a different collaborative experience with each person - that would be fantastic.

A quick glance at my 'To Do' list should let anyone know that yeah, any real work on it from my end is not going to happen for a while, but I will get it going anyway! I only want to do this with around 5 people, because keeping up with more than that would be a pain in the butt.

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Comment away!

--------------

Kiribaaaaan: 10 000
Art Status: [link]
Mini FAQ [link]

It is a slow day at work and I'm bored and bitchy enough to come forth and write this.

Some artists (in both word and visuals alike) are not taking enough credit for their own work. I'm sick of hearing "Oh, I had to do it for my Muse" or "My character made me draw her, teehee!"

I'll acknowledge, that yes, occasionally it might be like some outside force has lead you to draw something, or what you've written seemed to come out of nowhere - divine inspiration, you might say.

I however, refuse to believe this happens to someone all the time. Why the need to do this? Do people think it's funny and cute? That people can only work if they have some 'Muse' yelling in their ear to work all the time (which is generally not the definition of a Muse, by the way. Muses tend to be known as beings so fantastic that you can't stop yourself from harnessing their pure awesome inspirational power for creative purposes)?

Or perhaps it's easier to lay the blame of something you created not being up to its full potential because you rushed it - After all, your Muse said it must be done!!!

Really, you are shortchanging yourself as a creative person this way. Take some credit for your awesome ideas and your drive to do work. I'm happy to believe that some people do ocassionally get inspiration from an otherworldly force, but it's stretching it to have it every single time.

And for Godsakes, if you're the exception to that - Shut up about it. It gets really annoying.

For my Communications class I'm writing an essay on critique in the world of writing (largely fiction/poetry writing but not excluding non-fiction writing). We have to have around 10 references and we've been told that having primary sources will look especially impressive. So here I am setting about gathering a primary source in the form of a collection of surveys.

I'm sure everyone writes in some form or another (either you write regularly or you do it for school, etc.), so I'd really like as many completed surveys as possible! If you feel uncomfortable posting your answers as replies, please feel free to note or email them to me. I will not post these surveys anywhere else online - I will refer to them in my essay and they will be printed off to be attached to it. Unless you are really worried about my lecturer who doesn't know you seeing your answers, there shouldn't be anything to worry about with it

If you were to promote this survey to people who you think would be interested, I would love you lots!!!

Here we go! If you choose to take part in this survey, please answer these questions as honestly as possible. The last two have 'think' underlined to emphasise that you should answer those questions even if you have not been in such a situation before.

(Feel free to critique the survey itself XD)

1.	What is your name or alias?
2.	How long have you been writing?
3.	What is your age?
4.	Do you see your writing as a future career, or simply a hobby?
5.	Do you believe hobby writers should view their work critically? Why? How critically in comparison to the work of those using it as a career?
6.	Have you ever entered your writing into a competition or even submitted it to a publisher?
-If not, how come?
-If so, what was the result and did you get feedback?
7.	Have you received criticism on your work before?
-If so, was it/has it been helpful? What was the best critique you received? The worst? What features of these were particularly good or bad?
-If not, do you know the reasons (eg. You didn't want it, didn't advertise for it)? Please explain/state why
8.	Do you believe it is important to receive critique? Why?
9.	Which do you believe is more helpful - self-critique or critique from others? Why?
10.	What do you believe good, constructive criticism should contain?
11.	Have you ever given critique before?
-If so, how did you go about it? What were challenges you presented? Why did you give it?
- If not, have you considered it before? Why/why not?
12.	What do you think are the largest problems critics face?
13. But with the commissions closed, even though I wasn't exactly over flooded with them before, I feel like a load has been lifted off all the same. I'm going to make an effort to cut down on my massive art to-do list before I take on any more projects - a few of which will be me doing some 'original' art for once rather than fan characters or art of other people's characters. While I like doing them, it's probably good that I try something different.

Like, I dunno. Finishing off Film Noir.
Hey guys!

As some of you might have heard, I've been taking $1+ commissions for a while, a strategy which hasn't been very effective largely because I've only received three (and two of those are from the same person). My parents have also chastised me for putting effort into something I might not get any money out of - though that didn't really bother me, because this whole thing has been for some practice that also put a few extra cents (and dollars, which has actually been a surprise) in my pocket.

The fact is now though, I haven't been able to get a job after months of job searching, I'm at uni and I'm wanting to move out soon. I DO have a potential job on the table, but if I want to make money, I have to think realistically. It is now far too uneconomical both financially and in terms of time for me to continue doing commissions like this (that I'm not getting many of), even if they are just for fun .

On the 25th of July (next Friday, in GMT+10 time), I am doing my first of three days at a temporary job that could turn into a proper part time job. On that day, I will be closing up my $1 commission offer. Any commissions that I have now or get before then will still stay on the same price deal and will be finished.

Once they are finished though, I will not be opening with this deal again. I am thinking of putting out a set price for custom bookmarks (artwork to fit on a 1.5x6 inch piece of paper that will be laminated), or just working out a more logical, set price for the type of commissions I have been doing already.

But basically, if you have been thinking 'hey, maybe I'll get a commission from Jetty some time. That's a pretty good deal right there' but been putting it off for later, NOW IS THE BEST TIME. I will accept up to FIVE commissions, as I feel anymore than this would force clients to wait too long, and I also don't think I'll get that many (if any) wanting them.

Full details of my commission system can be found here: [link]

Happy sailing!

--------------

Kiribaaaaan: 10 000
$1+ Commissions! [link]
Art Status: [link]
Mini FAQ [link]

Well, it ran a day late and I didn't get as much critiquing as I would have liked to done, but I hope everyone enjoyed this week and learnt something. For those people who came on at the end, or feel they didn't get enough crit, never fear! I will continue to critique people even now that this event is over, unless you ask me specifically not to.

What I hope people have gotten out of this is the notion to strive to improve their work even a little bit. Not only that, but to go on forward and help others to improve their work. There are a lot of people out there who will throw constructive criticism back in your face, but there are also a lot of people who love and live off it. Commenting with thoughtful feedback makes you feel good and it helps the person move forward with their artwork. It also builds relationships between artists, and that's what this great community is all about.

If you have any questions, complaints or general comments and feedback about this event, that would be fantastic. I'm considering doing it another time, maybe for longer despite breaking the rhyming thing. I would find a catchy name for it though, don't you worry.

A big thank you to all the participants! Again, I will try to critique your entire collections (if you keep them there) or galleries over the coming weeks, and don't be afraid to do the same to others

--------------

Kiribaaaaan: 10 000
$1+ Commissions! [link]
Art Status: [link]
Mini FAQ [link]

Hey guys, just a quick reminder as I add some more people to the list that you should be critiquing each other as well as being critiqued if you haven't done so already. I'm finding out how time consuming this is as I try to critique everyone myself, so I understand entirely, but yeah, just keep that in mind.

With that said, the other goal of this week is to encourage people to critique people in general. I did play with the idea of extending the week, but not only would it ruin the rhyming title, but I think it would defeat that purpose. This week is an exercise in giving helpful feedback to others, and you have the knowledge of how good it feels for the person you're giving it to because you should be receiving some yourself. In other words - Keep critiquing people after Thursday when critique week ends! More on this point towards the end of the week when I start to float on my own hot air and inflated head.

Otherwise I hope everyone's enjoying the feedback! I will try to get to even more stuff very soon.

----

Hello folks! The promise of new art draws closer and closer. I swear. There'll be a bucket load coming in soon after I finish the project I'm working on.

For now, I feel like I'd like to 'give back to the community' and generally spread the community feeling among those on my watcher list. What better way than a week to encourage each other to learn and grow as artists? This is an event that I've been planning for a while but for some reason I thought to put it into action tonight

Basically, I'm asking for people to come forward and post on this here journal to put a portion of your gallery up for in depth critique, both from me and anyone else who chooses to participate. And when I say 'in depth', I mean in depth and hard hitting. As in, don't pull punches people!

This might sound a bit scary for some of you. My style of critique often asks people to try something they might not have thought of before, and I know this is the case with many other people's critiques. NO ONE is going to tell you that your artwork is rubbish, but no one is a perfect artist and there is always room for improvement. Even if you don't like what you hear, think of it as an opportunity to try something NEW. Doing something different won't hurt and who knows? You might just surprise yourself.

Also, DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF TO RECENT ARTWORKS. Putting oldish artworks that you don't think are relevant to your current skill level up for critique can still help. People can find things that might not be so obvious in your newer artworks, but are still in there. There are a myriad of other reasons why including older artworks can be a good thing, but I won't go into all of them here.

So here are the guidelines, laid out just for you:

1. Make a collection of artworks/literature that you would like to be critiqued. You can add to it any time during the week. Here is mine: [link]

2. Post a link to your collection on this journal

3. Look at links posted by other participants (including the one above from myself) and critique as many pieces as you can. Ensure you read artist comments and Criticism MUST be CONSTRUCTIVE.

- List all the things you like about the piece (remembering everything has some merit and/or potential). Here is a very basic, basic guide to critique. If you would like to go more in depth, feel free. Please note you should always point out GOOD and BAD things about each piece, and no critique should contain only good or bad comments.
- List all the things you don't like about the piece (remembering no piece is perfect)
- Think of some ways the things you don't like could be improved and list them
- Think of some things that might be added to the piece (but aren't necessarily problems) to improve it
- List the especially good aspects that the artist/writer should keep up the good work on, or continue to improve.
- Give an overall thought to sum it up.

4. Read critique you get on your own pieces and respond to it in kind.
You MAY ask questions about aspects of critique for clarification or handy hints.
You MAY clarify reasons why you have done certain things.
You may NOT insult the critiquer
You may NOT all out dismiss their critique. All critique must be considered to have value. If you believe a particular critique (assuming it's from one of the participants and not a random DA member) is of no value to you and is needlessly and wrongly picking at a piece, please note me and I will do my best to absolve the issue if need be.

5. Take on board critique and USE IT...

IGNORE MY LACK OF ARTWORK LATELY. There will be some soon. I promise. Or I hope. One of the two. I will substitute with journals in the meantime.

For my last creative essay in my Australian Lit class, I modified two chapters of Film Noir ("The Downtown" and "Thomas") and combined them. I've had the intention all along of going back to eventually rewrite every chapter I've done for Film Noir, but doing this for class did give me the opportunity to think about some things. So! Here are some questions and answers I thought up that I thought the odd reader might be interested in!

What made you start writing Film Noir?
I wrote a very basic version of "Opening Credits" for no real reason... Sometime ago. It was largely because I was bored, and I have a thing for bad action/suspense/whatever movies that involve guns. Actually I think a lot of works of fiction become 10x cooler when guns are involved... Which is odd because I don't really like the idea of carrying around guns in real life. But anyway back on topic...

I decided to turn Film Noir in to a full fledged story after falling in love with Charlie. There! I said it! Charlie is possibly my favourite of any characters I have created. Though he did cause some confusion in the essay because I didn't quite establish his more 'literary' voice and my teacher told me off for not using New Yorker idioms.

The plot became formed because I am also a huge fan of Film Noir, pulp fiction and the movie Pulp Fiction. Though Part One features very little of the overall plot, most of it is influenced by songs by CAKE. The larger plot only begins to develop in part two, but was brought around by my interest of media influence and... Well anymore than that would be giving it away really.

Film Noir is also an expression for my love of clichés found in movies and TV shows, especially in action flicks.

Where is everything in Film Noir located?
Film Noir is set in New York City, and so far I don't plan to have it going to any location outside of there. I do appreciate feedback when I mention geography of the city, as having never been to New York, I rely on research and what I know from friends and the media.

Doug's bar 'The Downtown' in current drafts is somewhere vaguely 'downtown'... But seeing as that really could be anywhere that's not right near the North of the city, I'm moving it to very Upper Manhattan when it comes to the re-write. Irony is fun.

Charlie's office and apartment are only two blocks apart. They're on the northern outskirts of Harlem. He locates himself there by choice, so just ignore him when he complains about it.

I made research my friend in "Deus Ex Machina" - there is indeed a cinema on East Houston Street called "Sunshine Cinema" (has anyone been there before?).

Charlie's sister lives near Chinatown, and has a whacked sense of distance. This is made more obvious now that The Downtown is very far away from Chinatown.

Jonathan along with his wife and 'Jeeves' live in... Queens. I would love some correction/clarification on this, but I'm assuming there are some 'stinking rich' areas of Queens despite it not really being known for housing rich people.

Thomas lives and breathes Brooklyn, he has lived in Brownsville for most of his life.

Charlie and Thomas of course went to New York State Police Academy which I think is in Albany... Not too important, as it's never really mentioned outside of "Thomas".

Why aren't the female characters matched to names as easily as male characters?
TO CONFUSE YOU.

No, really.

OK so there is a bit more to it. In a lot of action movies, it's pretty clear that male protagonists are popular with screenwriters, and female characters take the back seat as side characters or love interests. By keeping the female characters semi-nameless (their names do or will appear in the story) I imply the facelessness of them... And then go and turn that on their head. The female characters in Film Noir are very important to the plot. This is a clichéd story, so of course there's going to be a femme fatale somewhere, right?

I'll say now that Mia is probably more important to the plot than Charlie though.

What are you trying to accomplish with this story?
Not much really. I have played with thoughts of trying to get it published, but I'm putting them on hold until I actually get close to being finished.

I don't know if it's actually good enough to be published, it's just a bit of fun really.

So... What is it about?
CLICHÉS AND THE MEDIA AND MAYBE DRUGS AND GUNS TOO.

I don't really know yet, to be perfectly honest.

Can I ask more questions about Film...

It's mini because I don't believe I'm popular enough for these q's to be asked quite as frequently as some.

But! Asked by people both online and offline:

Do you take Requests/Trades/Purple Monkeys?
IT DEPENDS!

If in doubt, you can always refer to my Art Status (which is always linked from the bottom of my journals and updated pretty frequently)

Though with that said, I will always accept purple monkeys.

How do you draw like that?/Do you do art at school?
This one is obviously asked by people I know off the 'net and have not seen the many wonders DeviantArt has to offer

I say I'm 'self taught', but it's a bit of a lie. I've done very basic art classes in year seven and year nine in high school, and I did a stint in the art club there through years 7-9 (this covers the periods of 2001-2003). So that was me drawing for a hobby, and it was only sometime in 2006 when it became a serious hobby (like the casual card collector can suddenly become a very serious one). You can note that because that's the year I went out to actually get a graphics tablet.

Throughout all that time I went out and about finding various tutorials on the internet. I used to be a HUGE anime fan (I'm still a fan, just not quite as hugely anymore) and so most of the tutorials I went off were off that. I seem to recall buying one or two "How to draw manga books" back in 2004 (around the time I started up this DA account with some truly horrible artwork... It's still up there if you go back. You are spared from even earlier works). When I started to get serious, I learnt that sticking religiously to the anime style wasn't really getting me anywhere. I started to be more discerning about tutorials on the web (which ones were actually giving a final product of any value) and went out and got myself some books on real anatomy and a very brilliant, big book on art 'basics' and a bit beyond (The Complete Book of Drawing by Barrington Barber, I think it's wonderful). But basically I learnt that if I can't afford to go to art school for something that is just a hobby, I should learn from as many different sources as possible.

Other than that... Lots and lots and lots of practice. I'm getting more and more lately from drawing in my notebooks on the train to and from uni, lots of sketches of chairs, bars, security cameras on the carriage roofs and various people I see commuting

So, about your website(s), they're kind of crap. Why is this?
They need to be updated. A lot. Desperately. They are so behind on my current skill level it's not funny.

I will find the time to do them up soon I hope

Why haven't you updated C.A.R.D. or Film Noir with new chapters?
Time is money and that time is often very short. Film Noir is actually half written, it needs to be typed up and edited to make sure it goes together, I also am wanting to make some minor edits to the chapters already up. C.A.R.D. is barely anywhere, half because of the time factor and half because I am disenchanted with the way it was coming out... I am still in love with the story and the characters, but the chapters will once again need to be re written before I feel I can continue on with it in good conscience.

So you like Sailor Moon?
Yes. Yes I do.

How many of the artworks in the gallery are done for yourself?
Not as many as there should be probably. I really like doing request art for others and in between that, I tend to neglect the things I have done for myself. I will work on changing this mindset in the future.

Why are you so slow with your artworks?
I don't know D: I am working on this also. I suspect a lot of it is rampant procrastination.

Do you listen to music when you do your art?
YES.

I usually have my media player on shuffle, but lately I've found Radiohead's newest album (In Rainbows) to be fantastically inspiring background music for drawing to. Their album "Hail to the Thief" is also good for doing artwork.

So your favourite band is Radiohead?
No.

What artists inspire you?
A lot of artists who I aspire to but don't think I'll ever reach their ability can be found right here on DA. Here are a few popular DA artists, who, despite being popular (because apparently being popular here automatically invalidates your work oO) are fantastic in my eyes:

<a hre...

So after the semi-guilt I've been feeling over these two artworks not looking professional enough to go on business cards and a store sign like they're going to:

My aunt (who asked for them), has seemingly gotten me a job as a custom artwork type person with her printer.

It's not confirmed or anything yet, but I think I feel kind of weird getting a job like this when I'm nowhere near a professional level oO

Still kind of cool I guess...

Just goes to prove it's not what you know?

New feature, yay.

------

So I've been wanting to do this a while, but I REALLY wanted to wait until I had a shoutbox and could post thumbs and stuff. I required a subscription for this.

But now I do

Because Roselite is the awesome one who bought me a 3 month sub, she'll be the first weekly feature. After that I'll randomly be picking people from my extensive watch list.

I've got some Christmas art to post once I finish the second one. Unfortunately it's annoying and stupidly big, so I may just scrap it in the end and do something quick and simple. Damn Cubs. After that expect an influx of art that shouldn't take nearly as long.

One of these artworks I'd like to do I've asked about before, but I think it would be more fun to do a poll ^_^ So I've got nine artworks up there plus one 'other'. Go vote please! A lot of the art there is stuff I've done for other people... Please don't vote for an artwork that I did for you, I would really like people to genuinely vote on which artwork could be redone to look a lot better, and they'd like to see it again... Rather than just voting to get a better artwork for yourself.

------

OK, for those of you who are odd and obsessive enough to frequently check out my art status post, you can see that I have a bit to do... So I'm just gonna add one more thing on top.

I want to redo one piece in my gallery. How redone it will be will depend on the piece. But yeah, I'd like people's thoughts on what I should do.

Also I have a little contest that will be running exclusively here on DeviantART.

THE AIM: Point out as many clichés as you can in Film Noir, a 'novel' of which I post chapters here on DeviantART (look through my gallery)

THE RULES: None really, this runs on an honour system and I trust people to find them themselves rather than build on lists of others.

THE WINNER: Will be the person who finds the most clichés, and are the most accurate with them (accurate is up to interpretation! See how you go with it...)

THE PRIZE: One free Commission (That's commission quality for free!)

THE DEADLINE: This contest will be continuing until I one day finish the series, it will close five days after I post the final chapter of part two (currently still on part one!). There is no rush, and there will be reminders as I approach the deadline of the contest.

Have fun!

Hopefully it will be more successful this time I do it.

Anyway, I decided to start up the whole feature thing again It's always fun when it spreads around.

But yes. First 10 people to comment get three pieces featured. If you're a cool and awesome person, you'll do the same in your own journal

1.
SS Shinigami-Vax
It may just be a simple character sheet, but I really love Vax's loud and outrageous design! That hair is ftw.

TD-I Wonder
While I still reckon this piece would do well with a background, the expressions in this picture are awesome! Check it out.

Rebirth-LOVE
OK, so I just think this one is cute! <3
The real Sailor Astera
I thought this costume was a brilliantly done, very true to Astera's design and it looks great on the owner!

Myu Sailor Apollos
It's such a good edit, you could almost believe that Sailor Apollos really was an official Sailor Moon character! Myu edits are of course a little harder to make, so this is a real show of SoA's editing skill!

Blue Sky
Beautiful costume, and a beautiful photo and it all looks just beautiful with the model (SoA herself!) Awesomely done!
The design is very cool in the first place, and this edit totally does it justice. Nice choice of blank and great use of colours!
Scary, interesting concept. It's always good to see that a writer is willing to kill their favourite character off. The womans expression certainly is... Insane!
I've never seen an episode of Avatar, but I have seen a lot of images and fanart. This seems to be a really faithful, well done image of the character Katara.

Just because I felt like saying something in a venue where it a) Wouldn't get much notice and b) Wouldn't be open to such drama (as tempting as making and open ended post to discuss the general issue rather than the specific one is on the forums, I'm pretty happy with a specific one on a place where I can hide rude and inappropriate comments should they for some magic and unknown reason actually appear)

...And with that said it's also a place where my opinion is rule, and I'm not going to be told off for causing unnecessary drama because you shall READ AT YOUR OWN RISK. Disagreements with backed up arguments are fine, I love those and that's why drama like this is always intriguing to me. As someone who has been too busy to be a part of it before the stuff was locked, I've caught up on it on my own and... I dunno just wanted to give my own opinion...

For those of you who are even less involved than me, the issue in question is one that's happened at a certain forum. If you don't know about it... Best stay that way

First off there is the actual legality of the issue. I present this link, which is from the UK, but as it states in the fourth dot point under section one, "copyright is an automatic international right" and so the restrictions of the country stretch across the globe:

[link]

The name in question comes from Australia, and according to the Australian copyright council;

"• Generally, names, titles and slogans will not be protected by copyright."

"Copyright protection generally
Copyright law in Australia is contained in the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) and in decisions of courts. Copyright is
free and automatic. There is no registration procedure and there are no fees to pay.
The Act lists the categories of material that are protected by copyright. One of these categories is “literary
work”, which includes novels, poems, newspaper articles and reports.
If something can be classified as belonging to a category of material listed in the Act it will be protected, if it
is:
• “original”; (for copyright purposes, a work is “original” if it has not been merely copied from another work,
and it results from its creator’s skill and labour); and
• recorded in “material form” (for example, on paper, on an audio recording or on computer)."

"Application of copyright law to names, titles and slogans
The Act does not specifically exclude names, titles or slogans from being “literary works” for copyright purposes.
However, there have been a number of cases in which courts have held that particular names, titles and slogans
are not protected and so one can now state that it is highly unlikely that a name, title or slogan will be
protected by copyright. In these cases, the courts have generally arrived at their decisions because the name,
title or slogan concerned is not an “original literary work” for copyright purposes. Factors that have influenced
courts in reaching these decisions include:
• the word or phrase was not of sufficient substance to constitute a “work” for copyright purposes; or
• the phrase or sentence was commonplace.
Examples of names, titles or slogans which courts have held were not protected by copyright include:
• Exxon, a word invented as the name of a corporation;
• Opportunity Knocks, the title of a television program;
• The Man who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo, the title of a song; and
• “The resort that offers precious little”, an advertising slogan.
The courts have not said that a name, title or slogan can never be protected by copyright. However, other areas
of law will usually be more relevant. We outline the main areas below."

" “ Passing off” and consumer protection laws
A person may be able to take legal action against someone who “cashes in” on his or her reputation in a market,
for example, by using the name of a product in a way that misleads customers about where the product came
from, who has endorsed it, or who made it. In such situations, legal action may be available under laws such as
“ passing off”, the Trade Practices Act 1974 (Cth) or State or Territory fair trading legislation."

"Can I stop someone else using my pen-name?
Generally, copyright does not protect a name, whether it is the real name of an author or a pen-name. However,
if the writer has established a reputation in a pen-name, he or she may be able to prevent others from using the
name in a way which causes confusion by relying on the law of passing off, or fair trading laws. A...

Living Island is a multi-genre roleplaying game that's been going for a few years. It's very laid back and is mostly there for fun. It's been designed so that it won't take up most of your day and night but can still provide you daily laughs. Like most multi-genre games, we welcome any character be it from books, movies, television, anime etc. Like some multi-genre games, the application process is a little more difficult and we expect people to come in with a decent grasp of the English language.
Just a quick idea for those of you with time on your hands, when I am one of these people I will probably try it out along with my album meme.

Anyway this piece: [link] by gave me the idea. Basically draw one of your original characters or fanart of another character who's from a cartoon or a book or something, using an actor or other celebrity as the base. Kind of like making them dress up I suppose. For example, in that piece there you have Drew Barrymore as Snow White.

Go nuts people, I'd love to see people on my watch list do this. I'll post it on my journal for others to see if you do.

COMMISSION INFORMATION

I'm currently working on four pieces to showcase my commision standard of artwork, you can see the first of these here: [link] and [link]

When you order a commision from me, I will do my best to give you the best quality art I can, spending double if not triple or more the time on it I would any other artwork. You will have control over the look of the artwork. I will show you the sketch- If you don't like it, I will redo it. If at the end you don't like the colours or the shading; I will redo it. At my own expense.

As for payment... I understand I'm not a great artist (I don't even have a DA subscription, haha), so until I can be confidant that my quality is up to a standard where I can set prices, this is my price:

Whatever you want. For anything.

That's right. Well, as long as it is over $1 in whatever currency you use, and that $1 is a deposit (so you can just pay a deposit and that's it if you want). I'm still not sure HOW to be paid, but I'm sure that can be worked out on a case by case basis.

The basic premise behind this is that you pay me however much you think the artwork is worth. The $1 thing is just so I don't get ripped off, and because I am still putting time into the piece for you.

There are other costs depending on what you want. I am poor and cannot cover the cost of mailing if you wish to have a hard copy, and if you request a CG (or don't specify which will have you ending up most likely with a CG), I don't have the money to cost printing costs if you wish to have a hard copy, so I will need that to be payed too. These prices change on case to case basis, but you can see what you're looking at here, all prices here are in AUD:

Postage within Australia (My Postcode is 3088): [link]
Postage International: [link]
Printing: [link]
Currency converter (for international postage/printing, the $1 minimum is in YOUR currency): [link]

If I can get cheaper prices on anything at any time, I will let you know.

When it comes to requesting a commision, giving me as much detail as possible will assure a better artwork for you. Telling me what kind of picture (eg, a portrait, a character in a location, etc.) Is also good. Again you can trial and error with my rough sketches, I'm quite happy to do a number of sketches for clients until they see something they'd like as a final.

Please note me if you would like a commision! Yes, I will work on the artwork of those who pay me before the artwork of those who don't. More examples of commision standard artwork coming soon!

Well in amidst finding work, working the job I have and organising my trip to the USA, time is sparse lately, and when I've had time I've been zoning out and sleeping a lot, haha.

But obviously I am putting a lot of work into art, mostly 'cos I know that I want to get better and to do that I have to keep working, and also because I am indeed trying to get some extra money for what I'm doing

Which brings me to:

The Album Meme

I've been thinking about typing up this art meme for a while and only decided now to put it up as a potential project. I won't be embarking on it until I have my "little secret list of Christmas presents for people that will very much be late now because of procastination demons" completed.

But I digress.

Basically the point of this meme is to take an album from your collection, and put the track listing of it up in your DA journal. From there, you create an artwork using each song (whether it be the song itself, the name of it, a line of lyrics from it, etc.). You can either choose to do random artworks or set them to a theme of some sort (like a fandom if you're a fan artist).

I plan to do this a few times when I get off my butt in order to kickstart some artwork for C.A.R.D ( [link] ), but for my first time around I'm choosing "O.K Computer" by Radiohead (I wanted to do a Silverchair album, but I want to wait until I can go to Sanity and finally get a beloved copy of Neon Ballroom that I have been waiting so long for with this voucher I have before I use it. So, next time )

So this is the sort of list you'd use if you want to do this meme, you'd probably link completed artworks or WIPs next to the relevent tracks as they appear in your gallery:

Album: OK Computer
Band/Artist: Radiohead
Tracks:

1. Airbag
2. Paranoid Android
3. Subterranean Homesick Alien
4. Exit Music (For a Film)
5. Let Down
6. Karma Police
7. Fitter Happier
8. Electioneering
9. Climbing up the Walls
10. No Suprises
11. Lucky
12. The Tourist

I heavily request that on each of your artworks you refer to the song and band etc that inspired it. I also encourage that you legally buy the albums and support the artist because of course we all like to be good and legal (ho hum, ho hum).

As said before I have a few artworks on the go at the moment that I'm wanting to complete before I do this, all for other people. Then I want to finish off Spades, Joker and probably Roll's official designs (despite the fact that Roll's official design is not actually changing, I still want him to have a reference sheet )

So look forward to a lot of art from me soon 8D

OK, just because I have a livejournal for other stuff, I'll do an update on the arty farty side of things...

- I'm now taking artwork requests through Pixel Moon [link] . It's primarily a Sailor Moon art request site, but I'm choosing to only accept two Sailor Moon requests and two original character requests at a time.

- I do believe I've signed up to write a doujinshi for ~shameBox which is going to be fun and exciting! Especially because it'll be awesome watching a better artist than me bring a script that I've written for them to life ^_^

- I have an interview on the 5th of December at RMIT for a multimedia course. I have to get a portfolio ready for that which should be fun. I have a few ideas that I'm going to work on after exams are finally over, but they're mostly going to centre around...

- My final desicion to make "Fate Senshi" into an original series (finally). I've already sort of started on writing a copy of the first chapter for the change into "C.A.R.D", and I've been playing with the character designs that I've had for yonks a bit more. Aside from the very end where my plot gets a bit shifty, I have a full plan for it as well. The website should be renovated soon to make way for it. I'll be focusing on it as a major project for my multimedia portfolio ^_^

- Lastly I'm not leaving my Otaku Senshi community buddies without me, I do still have another fic thing in the works so that my character as COSMIC has a place to live. Stay tuned on that. It'll be a little side project with everything else.

And that's it.

Yes folks, I am soon to be the owner of my very own graphics tablet! This means a lot higher quality artwork if I can get a hang of it quickly enough. It also means that my list of requests will be put on a bit of delay until I can get it, because I would like to have something to try it out on. I'll still be sketching first, so if I can't get something looking right I'll just use it as practice and give a handrawn image instead, but it's worth a go!

I'm also hopefully going to be getting a computer to myself very soon with a lot of shiny specs that mean nothing to me... I work with software, not hardware really. I have no idea, so long as it works I'm happy ^_^

But yes. Anyone who wants to request some art, I'll still take some. They'll just have to wait as well.

And thus, the artwork list
