I'm not following the rules. I'm not on DevArt often enough to know many people anymore, or think they want to be tagged by me. But, on the off hand you want to know something about me, or where the heck I've been, here goes:

1. I work full time. Yup. I'm a full-fledged adult. Nope, the job isn't about art. I work at a bank. But in this economy, any job is a good one.

2. Along with art, I also write stories and do music. This leads to a little bit of schizophrenia, in the form of me neglecting one area almost entirely for months, while I focus on another one. Currently I favor writing, because it's the most portable (i.e. I can do it on my lunch breaks.)

3. If I ever write fanfic, I do NOT use the main characters. I come up with my own characters, and play around in the author's world for a while. I've never done anything else whilst writing fanfiction . . .

4. I cannot do fanart. For the life of me, I can-NOT do fanart. I even sit down and tell myself "I'm going to do a hip cubist version of Naruto with legs and arms bent in odd shapes and with those weird white-in-black-circles eyes." And I stare at my computer screen for a while . . . and I do something else.

5. My best ideas all seem to come in the middle of something else I was doing, or as a sideline from something else I was doing. I once wrote part of a song for a story that I was doing. The story went nowhere, but years later I went back and finished the song. Turned out really good.

6. "My Brain on Vacation" was supposed to be a postcard held in the lap of a girl with holes for eyes, sitting in an armchair. I even made a version of that picture. Then I decided it was too gruesome and complicated and just did the artwork you see now.

7. I can recite almost all the Incredibles introduction (the one with the superheroes in front of the bad camera) word for word. This is just how my brain works.

8. I can never choose "favorite" questions for password security, because I like such a variety of things, the answer I put down today would be invalid tomorrow

yeah

Jim Hensen
There was a brief stint growing up where my family had cable (yes, brief). This was when cable was new, and people were calling it the wave of commercial-free tv (that lasted.) Anyway, one of my brother's and I's favorite channels to watch was TNT, which played Muppet Show reruns and episodes of Fraggle Rock. Plus we watched "Classic Era" Sesame Street (i.e., anything before Elmo), and Muppet Babies.

Have any of you seen Muppet Babies? Do you realize how off the wall looney that show was? It was all about getting kids to use their imaginations, and they juxtaposed 2d animation with black and white old movie footage (usually horror or science fiction) and just the strangest stuff. It was wonderful. We all loved it. We went looking for as much Jim Hensen stuff as we possibly could.

Such a shame that he died early.

Weekday Afternoon Cartoons

Those of you living off of Weekday Afternoon cartoons now . . . I'm sorry. I grew up in the eighties (yeah, I'm dating myself) which was the golden age of Weekday and Saturday morning cartoons, where all the stories and ideas were fresh, even if they were stupid. Okay, you now have stuff like Avatar and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, imported Anime from Japan. Not bad. But you don't have the different shows that I grew up with, a few of which I will list here:

Ducktales--the quintessential Disney Afternoon cartoon. They were around before there was a Disney Afternoon.

Gummy Bears--they were around before Ducktales, I think, but due to time zone stuff, I was actually introduced to Ducktales first. Where Ducktales was set in the "ordinary world" (or as ordinary as it could be when populated by ducks and dogs), Gummy Bears was set in the midieval world, with humans, and included Gummy Bears as a sort of leftover from an "ancient society" similar to dwarves and fairies (they lived underground) but furry and in various bright colors.

Talespin--they took all the animal characters from Junglebook and stuck them in a post WWII (50s, I think) environment with lots of seaplanes. It was insane. There was no way it could have worked. It was fabulous. We loved every episode. And because they had planes, the number of places they could visit was vast--and they filled up that vastness with a rich, detailed world.

Darkwing Duck--set in approximately the same world as Ducktales, but it was all about superheroes and making fun of superheroes. (at one point, Darkwing Duck tells his ward, who has to stay home "Ah, it's probably just another 'take over the world' thing.) They also have the credit for making up the corniest organized crime organization every (F.O.W.L.--the Federal Organization for World Larceny, as far as I can remember)

Muppet Babies . . . but I already wrote about that
(a few more from pre-Disney afternoon include G.I. Joe, Transformers, Voltron (I liked the vehicle version better than the Lion version--for those of you not in, this is the show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers stole all of its ideas from))

Bill Cosby

My family took a lot of car trips during the summers to go visit Grandpa and Grandma, and whenever we did, at some point after all the games had worn thin, we'd pop in a couple of Bill Cosby comedy tapes. I never saw too many episodes of the Cosby show, but I will always remember the gags from those tapes (Ice Cream! We're gonna eat Ice Cream! And we'll eat it every day, in the middle of the night! . . . )

Mr. Wizard

During the time that my family had cable (did I mention this was relatively brief?), we had Nickelodeon, and one of my favorite shows on Nickelodeon was Mr. Wizard. He'd always have some kid over to his house (these were the eighties, where such a thing could happen without too many problems), and he'd always show them a neat trick with string or a new shape that could roll as smoothly as round wheels or how to get a coin through a hole in paper that was smaller around than the coin. I'll probably never be a scientist, but Mr. Wizard got me curious about stuff and the world around me. Kind of like Bill Nye the science guy, only Mr. Wizard got to play around with neato stuff that just might be around your own house.

You Can't Do That on Television

I'm almost ashamed to admit this one. The humor was usually horribly bad, worse even than the Muppet Show. But after watching so many shows where anti-aging cream actually did make the character younger (using smoke and cuts and two different actors and a plastic baby doll) and where the show took one phrase and reinterpreted it in as many ways as possible (like complaints about having to all wear the same uniform--fi...

Or do you know someone with extensive knowledge in art history? I'm going to be trying to get together a series of news articles for DeviantArt on the subject. This comes after a chat discussion about the general lack of knowledge of art history on DA.

Learning art history informs and broadens an artist's concept of style, and allows for development of new techniques by building on what's old, or asking questions (Hey, they did this, but they didn't go this way or develop this before they went on and changed and did that, maybe I could . . .)

If anyone knows about art history or knows anybody who knows anybody about art history, I'd sure appreciate a note or a reference that I can contact. I am Done!!! The graduation ceremony was great. Long, but everyone got their turn in front of the camera to shine or goof off or whatever. Yeah, it was cool. The speaker was awesome, just what we needed to let us know that our education was just as good as people's from Harvard and elsewhere, and that the key is to keep learning and keep struggling and not just drift.

There was this cool video at the start (though I had to wonder to myself--how did they get picked?) and there was confetti at the end, in large quantities, shot into the air from cannons. And best of all, the professor that I care about the most was there (the one that I did the most with, learned the most from, etc etc. But you see, a music department is a special place. You know all of your teachers, sometimes on a first name basis, and even though there are graduate T.A.s at the U of I, they aren't teaching a majority of the classes. It's usually the professors themselves)

Even though "walking" may seem like a hassle (there were plenty of people who complained about how long it took and about lining up (wasn't too thrilled about that myself) this sure beats the last time I graduated, when I applied to late and had to graduate the semester after I stopped taking classes and didn't walk and felt like I'd failed, even though I'd finished. So I recommend to anyone who's graduating from college to do it. Have the celebration, let your family cheer for you, because it sinks in that you've accomplished something.

And then you can use that sense of accomplishment to build everything else.

Which reminds me, I need to get job hunting. Anyone hear of any cool jobs available? (No, this isn't my only job search strategy :wink
------
cool clubs:

How dependent was I on my tablet? Pretty darn, if present circumstances are any indication. Don't get me wrong, I CAN draw without one. I have art paper. I can move a pencil across the paper. But there's no COLOR. I guess I'm really a painter at heart--except the last paintings I tried to do ended up very, very bad. And the paint makes such a mess.

As for making art without a tablet on the computer . . . the only mouse I currently have . . . okay, I do have two. I have a touchpad (that I hardly ever use) and this little red button in the middle of my computer. Excellent for sending the mouse wherever I want, but mighty hand-cramping when it comes to drawing anything. And not exactly as controllable as I'd like. Beats the touch-pad, though.

So in the meantime, I've rediscovered writing. Writing fiction, writing stories. I found a book by Gail Carson Levin (She wrote Ella Enchanted, just in case you don't know the name.) It's called Writing Magic, and I highly recommend it. She doesn't just give you a whole bunch of jaw about writing. Her book is simple, direct, and to the point (I think it was written for teenagers and under, but I really like clarity), and the book includes writing exercises. Awesome writing exercises. Writing exercises that get you going. At least, they get me going. I haven't been following the book that faithfully since I got it, but I have been writing ever since I got it, for extensive periods. Takes me back to when my whole goal in life was to be a fiction author.

Yeah, I still have a long way to go, but I finished one story last week (at least a first draft) and I've already written the first draft of a story this week, and new ideas just keep coming up. How's that for results?

I'm think that God took away my drawing tablet so that I could rediscover writing.

Have any of you had similar things happen? Where something happened that you thought was bad that instead turned out very, very good?
----
Clubs: :

<SOAPBOX RANT>

Okay, people, there are a lot of artists out there that say "I have the right to do what I want! I have the right to make the grossest, most disgusting stuff! I have the right to paint erotic art! I have the right to make artwork that makes women into objects."

Yeah, I know. You have those rights.

I on the other hand, have the right not to look at that stuff.

So do a lot of thirteen-year-olds, who are allowed to participate on this site under the understanding that anything of a "mature nature" will be behind a "mature rating" warning or block.

Think about it. When you mark your bare bums, or objectified women, and your grossness as "mature" the people who look at that stuff . . . will flock to it. And the people who don't want to see such stuff will stop by your gallery to see the rest of your great artwork and just leave the mature stuff alone. But they'll still go see your gallery, because they know they can trust you to filter out the stuff they don't want to see. Hey, they may even watch you. There are at least a couple of the people that I watch that have mature deviations in their galleries. But because they have the courtesy to mark their deviations as "mature," I still watch them, and still go to their galleries.

So, if you make stuff that should be classified as "mature" and don't mark it as "mature," you're really just hurting yourself, anyway.

And before any of you go off about wimps and how DA is full of them . . . art is about BEAUTY. It has always been about BEAUTY. It's only been in the last few years that people have decided that they can call ugliness art.

Which is stupid, because I can find ugliness out in life, or on the news.

I don't need artists to donate to the sludge pile, too.

Thank you

There's a contest got on at the Wacom site for someone to win a Cintiq 12WX. Eligibility for the final round depends on the number of votes cast for each picture. Please go vote for my picture! You can find it here: [link] , and by searching for Joanna Huffaker. Or, if you'd rather give yourself the chance to win, go ahead and upload your artwork--but beware, this is probably going to be a VERY big contest, so make sure it's your best.
My tablet is on the fritz. It's not quite dead, yet, but I inspected the wires near the tablet casing, and they've definitely been pulled out. The culprit? I carry my tablet in my backpack and have the habit of wrapping the chord around the tablet so that it doesn't become entangled with anything else. (I can hear gasps of horror from here--"You carried it around in your backpack?")

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't the most expensive, impressive tablet on earth--a 4x5 Wacom Graphire, and I only paid $83 for it at my school's bookstore--but I was kind of hoping that it would last me until I could afford something, you know, BETTER.

So . . . does anybody know if old tablets can be repaired? Or if there's some "buy it now" old graphire tablets that are pretty cheap on e-bay? I don't even have to have the latest style of tablet, I think I was running one or two models back. (well, I know it was at least one model back, but it might have been two).

I'll check out e-bay, but in the mean time, if anyone's upgraded their tablets recently, and wants to unload their older model . . . (I'm willing to pay, of course)

Yeah

I want to be Brad Bird. Okay, okay, I want to be the person in charge of the story, or who at least has some sort of say in the story--everything else I do, art, writing, music, has to have a story to it or a story to it, or it just doesn't interest me. So I had this idea of making up story packages--DVDs with a sort of flash navigation through the world (art/music/narration) and then a sort of mock-up of the story itself--not quite an animation, but not quite as static as a storybook. Because it's occured to me that while there are still some good storytellers out there (such as people at Pixar and Miyazaki and quite a few manga artists and J.K.Rowling) that the world is getting starved for good stories.

I mean, why ELSE would people bring back Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a cartoon that was fairly stupid in its original form?

The only thing is, I've never heard of anybody being able to do what I've described. Has anyone else heard of it? Or heard of a job/venue of education that can lead to doing it?

Yeah, so I've been . . . dissatisfied . . . with my art for some time, now. I've gone into my gallery and looked at my work, and while I can see it's good, I also felt . . . dissatisfied. Like something was missing. Then, this morning, someone said that my oldest piece of art spoke to him more than the piece of art that was currently my newest when I posted in his forum topic.

So that got me to thinking, and I came to the conclusion that there wasn't a single piece of artwork currently in my gallery that really spoke to my soul, was really something that I found absolutely necessary to paint. I've been working on improving technique, and that's important, but honestly, the only thing in my gallery right now that really speaks to me is the background of Randomization . . . and even then, I had to put a little character in front of it, to justify it's being in my gallery.

What does this mean for all of you? More change, I guess. I think I'll probably end up still doing children's art and junk, but anyway . . . if any of you were expecting consistency from me, sorry. Consistency doesn't seem to be my thing.

But maybe now that I've decided to do artwork that I really feel, that I really need to do, instead of just doing what I think someone else will like all the time, maybe that will produce consistency. Or at least as much consistency as I can deliver . . . .

Yeah . . .
That's right, people, only three! (Sorry, Sukutai, I really did need a background . . . ) Well, the next time I hold a contest, I guess I'll make sure the theme isn't so complicated. Or that the prizes are better. Or maybe I should give it more time?
Anyway, while I spend the next week making up my mind, I hope all my watchers enjoy these entries!

That's right, yours truly has yet to buy or borrow a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and read it. I've actually stopped some people from talking about it, and I stay away from any artwork that says "warning, spoiler" on it, but when I think about it (which is, admittedly, not that much), I know that I'm living on a ticking time-bomb, that it's only a matter of days before someone starts to talk in my hearing and before I know it, I will know everything that's in the book before I get the joy of reading it and discovering for myself.

As for why I haven't bought it--well, let's just say that I have other priorities right now. Like paying rent. And as much as I like Harry Potter, I'm not going to start living on the street just so that I can purchase the next book. Yeah.

So, doing the commissions has taught me some things, and I thought that I'd clarify a few little things about the $10 commissions. From now on, they will be 3x5.5 inches, and the prints will be handled through deviantart. Because deviantart makes much better prints than my parents' computer does. I will make the prints and send them to you direct from the devArt system, and sign them digitally from now on. BUT, YOU will be the only one who gets the prints from your commissions, and the commissions pictures will be stored (after I make prints from them) until you get the commissions. So what you are getting is your very own exclusive art .

But if you want a print of one of my existing artworks for free, see the CONTEST below!
----

So, yesterday night I got handed a $10 Starbucks giftcard. Only I don't drink coffee, for religious reasons. And I've never seen anything but coffee in a Starbucks while walking past, and I don't really want to go into a Starbucks store and say. "Yo, I don't drink coffee, but I have this card . . . What do you have that isn't coffee?" I can just see the weird looks that people would give me.

So, I thought to myself, why not give away the card to someone else, who might use it? And THEN I thought "Hey, why not use it for a prize in a contest?"

So here we go! (By the way, a non-coffee prize will be provided for the winner of the contest if the winner doesn't drink coffee, and the Starbucks card will be given to the next runner up.)
Take one of the original characters in the following pictures and put them in a situation that's nothing like the situation they are in now. Have fun, be creative--only please, be respectful. No naked or violent pictures, please (though I would be all right seeing my characters in swim-suits). You have until the second week in August . . . let's make that August 10. So, you have exactly one month from the posting of this journal until the contest ends. Any media is acceptable, but art entries only, please--there's just no fair criteria for judging writing against art.

THE RULES:
1.Please post a link to this contest in the artist's comments of your picture, and give appropriate credit for the character.

2.When you've submitted your entry, note me with a link to the picture.

3. Judging will take place between August 11-17, and the winners will be posted at that time. I will note the first place winner, and he or she will be able to choose between the Starbucks gift card and a print from my store of equal value. Second and Third place winners will be chosen, and those will get featured in my journal along with the first-place winner until Halloween.

4. All contest entries will become part of my favorites!

I hope to see a lot of entries come in.
$10 Commissions Still Open!

I've decided to go crazy and provide everyone a way to get cheep commissions from me. These commissions will be 3.5"x5" (three and a half inches by five inches) in size, will be on the single subject of your choice (within reason--no nudes, no copyrighted characters, nothing gory), in black, white, and one additional color. That additional color can serve in a number of different ways: as the background, as the shadow color, or as the ground on which white highlights are added. Both black and white can go for lines, though black will be the main color. See below for examples of what the commissions would look like:
Transactions will be handled through paypal, and remember, the $10 covers the cost of everything (as long as you're shipping to the United States. Outside the United States, note me!) If you're interested in this limited-time offer, please note me before the end of July. I'm not accepting orders for any of these after July 31 (this is so that I can have time to finish up everything before I go back to school!)
But I'd just like to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone for their support.
What makes me really happy is that Perplexed Dragon now has over 50 favorites!
What a nice early birthday present! Perplexed Dragon is my first deviation with over 50 favorites, and also my first deviation with over 500 views.

I'm also happy because of my latest deviation:

I really think that Afternoon Paradise is the best deviation that I've done so far. Even better than My Brain on Vacation (which has been my own personal favorite, despite the slightly icky subject matter).

So thanks to everyone! Have a piece of

I'm taking commissions!
That's right, folks, I'm going to do an experiment and open myself up for taking commissions. You can ask for different subjects, characters, whatever. (As for fanart, if it's for someone else, I can do it. Just as long as it's your own characters) I'll be opening up ten slots at first, to see what the response is, and take things from there.

Commissions will be done digitally, so you will only be paying me for my work, printing costs, and shipping and handling. Size makes a difference (in the printing cost), as does the presence of a background, so here goes!

5x7 inch commissions, subject/character, no background: $15.00
5x7 inch commissions, subject/character, with background: $25.00
8x10 inch commissions, subject/character, no background: $30.00
8x10 inch commissions, subject/character, with background: $40.00

I would gladly consider doing smaller prints or larger prints, and 'no background' would mean a flat color with a shape on it, similar to the background of BLAM. If you want me to do a commission for you, please note me and we'll work out the details of what exactly you want. I'll gladly send you files of what I'm working on during the whole process so that you can see what you're getting and correct me if I'm getting something wrong! All commissions will also be signed and dated. Payment would be through Paypal.

Another note: While I will mostly likely post the commission that I did for you up on deviantArt, I won't be trying to sell prints from what I did for you.

Participation Journal!

I stole this idea from who stole it from (clearly I need to start watching other people's journals more--sneaks off to go re-check 'Journal' on watch list). One of the rules specified in 's journal (you should really check her out, she has some great portraits up in her gallery), was that if people replied to the journal, then they would have to put the same thing up in their journal. I thought it was a great idea that should keep circulation around dA!

The first ten people who reply to this journal get put up here, along with three of my favorite deviations by them. You have to put this in your journal as well, so no cheating!

1.Philip Matthews

For a while, now, I've been worried about my self-designation here on DA. I mean, look at it, "Varied Artist" now look at my gallery . . . okay, for those of you who don't want to do that, the majority of the art that I have up right now is digital. And if it's a wallpaper, it was probably done digitally.

But after some contemplation, I decided that I'm okay with 'varied artist.'

Because take a look at my art again . . .

Yeah, looks like a bunch of different people put it together, right? At least one person has said that (though I've also had another person say that I definately have a style . . . )

In any case, yours truly has been and always will remain a 'varied artist'

(What's so varied about an artist if they use different mediums but always use the same style?)

Everyone says "It isn't about the page-views" here on deviantArt. But that's not exactly true. It would be more accurate to say that DA isn't JUST about the page-views. That is, if people come in and submit art that really isn't any good and then go around faving everyone's art and generate a lot of page-views for themselves with no good art to show for it--yeah, us artists are going to get a bit miffed.

On the otherhand, if nobody comes to an artist page, no one sees that artist's art. So I like seeing my page views go up, because that means that more people get enticed to go through my gallery and look through my stuff.

So when I looked at my pageviews recently and found that I had surpassed 4000 without my knowning, I felt pleased and grateful to everyone who has come here and gone through my gallery.

So thank you.
They have plenty of relatively unknown artists as well as some pretty well known artists on DA, and these artists use a wide variety of styles (which is good for me, since I enjoy seeing art that looks fresh. Art that looks the same as what everyone else does has to be REALLY, REALLY excellent and have a creative subject before I'll give it a second glance. Much less a fave.)

Yeah, so, I hope everyone enjoys!

So, when I go browsing for art on DA, quite a lot of the time I stick to other people's favorites: I figure that if someone else liked it, most of the time the picture is worth a look. But what about all the good art that doesn't get into people's favorites, or that gets a few favorites, but doesn't really attract a lot of attention on deviantart? I'm talking about the artwork that is of good quality that isn't in the Pop Genres (i.e. Fanart) or that gets put in categories like mixed media or miscellaneous that don't really get looked at a lot of the time?

Here are a few pictures that are really good (in my own opinion ) All of them have less than a hundred faves, and most of the deviants have less than 5,000 page views.

So, my folks moved into a new house right before Christmas (Right before I got home, I've been helping to"move the leftovers"--man, I didn't know that higher elevation would make such a difference in how tired I'd get!) And even though the old house was a comfortable place, I can't say I blame them. They don't have any kids left at home, but they didn't downsize. Rather, they made sure that all of the essentials are on the main floor (laundry being the main move. Now it's upstairs.) Everything's really nice, even though the carpet's all the same, and most of the paint's all the same, and all of the hardware is all the same. (Newer house, and I'm used to living in older places. You know the "fixer upper" places that never really stop being "fixer uppers" because by the time you get one project done, another one raises its head.)

I don't mind helping moving. It's nice to have STUFF TO DO, even though after an incredibly packed semester (12 cr hrs, 15 hrs work, and I volunteered to be part of someone's graduate composition recital), because that's just how I am. (Though I could entertain myself for about a week with nothing to do, I think. Or more. I make up work for myself. Seriously.) Having physical work to do keeps me from going of and doing a whole bunch of mental work (or not. Once I get into a physical work routine, the brain switches over about 80% to stories, music, art, or whatever). Plus, if I'm not DOING SOMETHING to help out, I feel like a heel. Yeah.

Most of the family is home (as in, most of the kids. My younger brother (and his wife and his guinea pig) and my younger sister and me. My older brother (and his wife and his two baby boys) are not here, because they decided not to travel, so they could save money and pay off their car.), and the feeling is good. Time to all get together and blab (though my sister brought her computer home, so she's not exactly around the fam' all the time. Though, to be honest, I brought MY computer home, so I can't really talk.)

Right now I'm discovering the beauty of custom brushes in Adobe Photoshop. Mostly because you can make custom brushes that cover a whole lot of area without piggin' down the memory. Great backgrounds! Now I've just got to come up with some art to go over them. Yeah, I'm freaky, that way, I can play around with colors, layer functions, and scribblies like FOREVER and come up with a whole bunch of backgrounds without making like, any REAL art. (Be thankful I don't post everything I do )

Okay, okay, I keep getting this niggling feeling that I ought to illustrate a kid's book. Or maybe just a short lil' story to start off with. Suggestions, anyone? The mind keeps drawing a blank. Maybe I should go off and do some brainstorming . . .

But you know how in the Harry Potter books, where Mr. Levander says that the wand chooses the wizard?

Well, I picked up my baton, and I could right away tell that THIS was MINE (I kind of feel bad because I really didn't let it go until I paid for it, so nobody else got to try it . . . except one person that really didn't like it, so I took that to mean that THIS baton was for ME.)

I don't know what kind of wood the handle is. It isn't really finished up really pretty. But there's a nob towards the shaft-end of the handle (the shaft end is the white part of a baton, btw), that makes my fingers feel secure, and the baton feels incredibly bouncy when I grip it. Wonderful weight, too.

So, even though this baton is not a wand, and it's meant for making music, not magic, I'm as thrilled as I would be if I did suddenly get to pick out a wizard's wand. More thrilled, probably. Because my baton DIDN'T cost me a whole lot of gold .

Maybe it's the fact that I worked for, like 57.5 hours a week over the summer and only really had a week off. Maybe it's the fact that my room-mates and I are on wildly different sleep schedules (I'm an early to bed, early to rise person. Really. My body wakes me up at 5:30am or earlier no matter what I do.), and I keep forgetting to get earplugs. (No, my roommates are sweet, really, but I tend to wake up when there's a CHANGE in the noise. Like my roomie laughing. Or when the television goes off.)

Sometimes I feel really strong and healthy, stronger and healthier than I've ever done (Testament to the fact that working in a library is really a physical job. Unless you have a boring front-desk work where all you do is check in and check out books all the time. Which I don't.) On the other hand, I don't have the Zest for my classes that I want to have.

The culprit? I think I can term it "lack of vision" . . . except, I KNOW what I want to be doing. I want to be composing music for an elective senior recital that will be recorded and that I can then send out to graduate schools. I want to be composing music for people's film projects (I keep forgetting to go over to the communications dept.), I want to be building my creative muscles.

Which I am doing, thanks to a little company called Greendeep that my sister and I have formed (Thank you, Robyn. Greendeep is one of the few creative outlets I have right now.). But I'm not doing it as much as I want to be. Because I have practicing. And work. And homework. Which are all necessary, yes. Oh, okay, and I probably do waste some time that I could be using to go towards creative work (sigh).

Okay, I really don't know what's up with me. Except that it feels like a yawn in the back of my throat and a slump on the inside . . .

Maybe I ought to get out and exercise every morning, I dunno . . .

I've put up a print version of Eechi Wields the Holdy Maracas! V.2, of course. A little bit more detail than the original.

Other prints up from before include the following:

I'm going to put up a print of Perplexed Dragon as soon as I can find the original digital file. I know I've got it somewhere . . .

So, yeah, I figured I might as well jump on this "100 pics" bandwagon thing. I understand that it was picked up from some site that does anime/manga. I don't do anime/manga, so I'm limiting my stuff to here. Quite a lot of people seem to be on it, people I watch (including my sister.)

1.) Make 100 pics each pic having a theme listed below. Each pic should have ONE and only ONE theme to it, for it to count. You don't have to do them in order.

2.) No time limit so have fun

3.) The main picture should be drawn but not limited to. for all fair purposes, people are allowed to use their paint programs and photo shop to create the pic.

3a.) pics should be of own artistic ability. You may not edit photos, or break any other rules set out in the Da etiquette policy. Your pics can be anything from sketches and doodles to great master pieces. Just have fun with it.

4.) The list below is to be placed somewhere in your journal for others to see that......
A.)You are in the challenge
B.)What you have completed

5.) make sure to update this list and check off what is done and make a link to the pic

6.) In the comments for your art work note if it is part of the list and what ONE theme it is.

Now the good part. CHALLANGE YOUR FREINDS. Anyone want to be challenged?
Which is the pits, because, quite frankly, when you don't have enough money, you think about it ALL THE TIME (O my goodness, I need groceries but I have to pay the rent and I haven't done laundry, for like WEEKS, because I don't have any quarters but there's no quarter machine in the library anymore so I'd have to spend like TONS of money just to get the quarters I need for one load and . . .)

Yeah, not pretty.

Niether is working oodles of hours a week, but I'd rather have that than the other.

I've been looking for a job pretty steadily now for about a month or more. I've gotten several interviews, and I finally got one that seemed to go well. The trouble is, most of my past work experience has been with temporary agencies. Now, I've worked WELL for these companies, including in-office for a couple of them. But temporary agencies have a policy (all of them, seems like) that they CANNOT GIVE REFERENCES, they can only confirm dates of employment. Which is all right, if you know about that before-hand and collect references from co-workers, etc. But I didn't do that. I should have known beforehand (I worked at one of the temporary agencies in-office for nine months, after all), but I never thought about it, and after a while I even forgot about it. And the issue only came up yesterday. And the people I interviewed with need references today. I have the e-mail of one of my former bosses, and I did send her an e-mail this morning (if only I'd thought about that last night! But I only thought about calling the temporary agencies.)

So, anyway, if you're in a tight spot, and you need work until you can get another job, temporary agencies are great. But don't make them your work habit, unless you want to get into a situation like mine . . . <sigh>

I'm a composer. I don't think I've said that before. Maybe I did, in "A Late Introduction." I don't remember.

Just today, I listened to the first (and so far only) CD recording of a collection of my works. Most of them were done in high school, or shortly thereafter. The recording was done when I didn't know that you didn't have to let the pedal up all the way, so there's a distinct thud in the background. There's some definite errors in one of the pieces, which is a disappointment, because that one is my showcase piece for that collection. And I've added bits to the two pieces on the end. One of the pieces is just the first piece, in a different octave.

The music is simple, hardly harmonically sophisticated.

But I love it. There's something about that music that just touches me. But the recording is hardly professional quality, mostly because of my lack of ability at the time (yeah, my Mom took me to a recording studio and we recorded the work and I've never done anything with the CD except copy it for one of my friends.)

Jo1day's News

Mood: Jubilant!

Just Changed my Major!

I don't know how excited everyone else will be, because the only person that I told yesterday who was excited was my piano teacher, who knows exactly why I changed my major, and who was the person who suggested the change in the first place.

As told by an earlier artwork that I did (which embarrasses me now) called, "The Little Pull Toy Who Wanted To," I'm a music student, and until recently I had the pressure of trying to compete my neophyte piano skills against all the piano people who had been playing piano for years and years. Well, my piano teacher was talking to the piano faculty advisor, who suggested a different degree for me. Instead of going into the Bachelors of Music in Composition, which requires an instrumental upper divisional exam, I would do a Bachelors of Science in Music Theory, which would free me from that expectation, and then take all the Composition classes that are required for the composition major, and continue to work on my piano skills, only at a different pace.

I talked to the general Music advisor yesterday, and she assured me that the degree would be good if I wanted to go into graduate work in composition--though of course she advised me to keep working on my piano skills, so that I can get up to a professional level.

But in any case, I am just so excited about this change of degree. It relieves a lot of pressure that I had been feeling, all this year, because I knew that I wasn't good enough, and that it would take a lot of time to get my piano skills up to the level where they could compete with those people who had been playing for years and years.

Selling Prints

For a limited time (until March 7), I will be selling prints of some of my more popular artworks. Selected prints appear below:

Proceeds from the artworks will mainly go towards keeping my subscription up, or buying a permanent prints account. .
I was just thinking about everything that I've put up in these journals, and other than the "Art . . . from now on, it's just a Hobby journal", I haven't really said anything about myself. And I've been here for what, over half a year now? (January through January minus January through May . . . yeah, over half a year).

So . . . here goes.

I'm a student at University of Idaho, going for a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition. This is my second bachelor's degree. The first one was in Geography. Yep, Geography. Quite the switch, eh? But I really, really do enjoy learning about different places. And I like maps. There's a map in my scraps section, even. I think I should do more of them .

As for composing music, I've been doing it for a while, now. I just went back to college (after a hiatus of some years) to learn how to compose better and faster (so I could compose for people and meet deadlines).

<thinks some> So why does so little of my art not have anything to do with music or maps or foreign countries? Beats me.

Maybe if I combined the art I do with the other things that I love . . .

First of all, let me thank everyone who's visited/watched me this past year. I've loved being here on DeviantArt. Yeah, there's been some rocky times, at least for the site itself, but after all the squabbling, DA still exists as it really should be: a community of artists and art appreciators all rooting for each other and trying to help each other improve.

What's in for this next year (I almost said semester, yeesh ). Well, yeah, I'm going to be very busy in school, so I'm going to try to limit my DA interaction to Saturdays: once a week only. Hopefully, that will help me to take time with my art and make sure it's really refined before I dump it all here. (I get a little impulsive sometimes--I get a piece of art to a point where I think it's finished and go "Squee! This is the best pic EVER!" And I post it right after I think it's done, then I come back the next day and go "Yik! What possessed me to post THAT!")

So anyway, I'm still stirring the "goals" pot, not quite got everything down yet (or even started to think about resolutions, really), but I hope that whatever resolutions you make, they build on your strengths, and will help you be a happier, better person.

Okay, I've already posted this journal on my wallpaper account, but more people come through my gallery here, anyway (mostly people just look at my wallpapers from the wallpaper section, and don't visit the page), so here's the deal

I've looked for a Wallpaper Club in deviantart, on all four relevant lists, and there was only one, and it's dead, because whoever it was that started it up forgot the password/e-mail address. So, would anyone be interested in a club that promoted wallpapers as real art?

Objectives would be to promote wallpaper art, promote comments/favorites on wallpaper, have group discussions (via journals) on what wallpaper sizes/subjects command the most attention, and techniques for improving wallpaper creation. We could also have a featured wallpaper artist, though since I don't have the money for a subscription, this would probably just include links and icons. We might even have journals featuring the different categories: minimalistic, dark, etc. Or any new categories that happen.

If you're interested, let me know. If you're interested in helping out, definately help me know
---
And to all of you out there that watch me . . . thank you so much for your continued support.
Which is a relief for me, a busy, busy music student who has a zillion other things to do.

Yesterday, I was performing a sight-singing audit for my Aural Skills professor and the head of the music department (he's the same guy.) He asked me how I was doing, and somehow it came around to the point where I said, "The trouble with me is that I take hobbies and I make them into work." I wasn't really thinking about what I was saying at the time, but when I pondered over that sentence, I realized that I was exactly right: I needed to demote a few things to hobby status so that I could really enjoy them instead of worrying all the time whether or not I was "all that."

Because the area in which I NEED to be "all that" is music, and it suffers when I focus on art and writing. And besides, I can still have fun with music when I make it into work. In art and writing, that attitude mostly backfires.

And now I feel VERY relieved.

Not that I wouldn't mind if you all visited my Cafe Press Store and helped contribute to my rent fund.
