So I finally watched the movie "The Plague Dogs" for the first time today. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) it was the cut/edited version, so I may have missed out on some elements of the story. It was a very interesting, thought-provoking movie and the animation, while not stellar, kept to a very realistic mood and therefore was more compelling.

I'm gonna go look for the book on Monday at my university's library. Hopefully I can read through it in a week's time while studying for finals!

I'm just glad it's the break. I can breathe a bit easier now, although I still have homework to do over the break *pouts*.

Well, I've almost got my schedule for next semester figured out - I'm just waiting for one professor to get back to me about an override into his class. Here's what I've got lined up for Spring 2010:

Three of the above classes are junior-level classes (300 classes), and the History class is a senior level (400 class). Despite these upper-division classes, I'm hoping this schedule won't be as stressful as this semester's was. Honestly, I've hardly had any time for personal art and social activities, it's driving me insane!

I think all these projects, tests, and speeches are giving me a bit of artist's block, as I can't seem to bring myself to do much lately (besides doodles in my notebooks and random sketches). Hopefully the Thanksgiving break in two weeks will fix that.

Oh, and to those of you who live in the United States - specifically Colorado - would you please take a moment of your time to answer my current poll? It would help me a lot.

I'm presenting a speech on Thursday advocating for a policy for the restoration (reintroduction) of wolves into Colorado (the Southern Rockies). I've already done all the research for it - the poll is just to get an idea of how people on this site feel.

If all goes well on Thursday, I might post the speech on my YouTube - that way more people can know the facts behind wolves and the possibility of their restoration to their historic range(s) of Colorado.

I've been doing a lot of research into career options and internships lately, as I am now a Junior in college. After looking at a several different career options and what each requires, I've discovered one thing:

I need to seriously improve my art and learn as much as possible within the next couple of years, or I will run the risk of not getting into the career I want due to a small, bland portfolio.

In case you are interested, I have been looking at the following specific careers: book illustration and concept artist. However, I have also skimmed career options in the realms of illustration, animation/story-boarding, concept artist, video game art, and comic arts.

My problem is that I can't figure out what sort of career (or internship) I really want to go for. My talent is art in general, and my dream is to be able to create art as my job, but I am at a loss as to what career would best suit my tastes/style.

If any of you have any suggestions as to careers, internships, or even art colleges for me, please let me know!

After analyzing my art, looking at the trends I take, the techniques I use, and my ways of thinking, I have noticed the following:

1. I tend to sit in my comfort zone too long. Therefore, I need to branch out and do things I don't normally do (even if I don't like it).

2. I need to practice more traditional mediums, including paints (watercolor, acrylic, oils), pastels, charcoal, ink, colored pencil, etc. until I can become fluent in each medium.

3. I need to draw a larger variety of objects. Buildings, landscapes, birds, insects, microbes, anything and everything. The more I know/see the more it adds to my creativity.

4. I need to learn more about and practice using computer programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Flash. Knowing these programs seems to be a must lately in the art careers I may pursue.

5. I need to spend less time dawdling on the internet. That means no more deviantART and other websites for a long time. I will be taking a general internet hiatus - with the exceptions of college-related needs and resource research.

I apologize to everyone here in advance for my absence. Hopefully, though, when I come back, my art will have improved greatly. During my hiatus, I will be working on my last trade, collab, and of course, The Jamboree.

When will I be back on? Well, I have not yet decided that. However, I may check in once a week or so, just to see if there's something that needs my attention. If any of my close friends on here want/need to contact me, note me and I'll send you my email address.

I will officially start my hiatus this Sunday, the 18th of October.

2. What does your username have to do with you? Is it a combination of your favorite things, or a character of yours?

I wanted something Japanese, I knew that much. My fursona's name is "Pureheart," so I was gonna go with that, but I realized how generic that sounded. After much research, I came up with this:

"junryou" means "pure and good"
"kokoro" mean heart
("na" is a connective word indicating that "junryou" is describing "kokoro")

Therefore it roughly translates to: "good and pure-hearted"

Lately, thanks to , I have been on a Wishbone hype. That series was a big part of my childhood, and I'd love to continue to support the show.

That's why I am cross-posting the following journal. I would love to see the Wishbone series released in DVD box set format, so that I may buy it, re-watch the series, and share it with others and their kids.

To clarify before-hand only a few episodes and the movie have been released on DVD, the whole series has yet to be released.

"I'm not sure how many of you remember or even watched the Wishbone TV series back in the 90s but I do know that many of my watchers are canine lovers so I thought I'd run this by you...

I've been waiting years for the Wishbone series to be released on boxset DVDs. In the past few years, I have seen this "trend" of making current and older TV shows widely available on DVD in nice compact boxsets. So I thought for sure, Wishbone was going to get the special DVD treatment soon. It never happened and still hasn't. There have been a handful of episodes released to VHS and only four of the fifty or so episodes made it to actual DVD format. It was hugely popular back in the day but it seems that because there isn't a loud enough demand for it recently, the folks at HitEntertainment haven't chosen to put the time, effort, or money into a proper release of all the episodes. This is where you come in.

I talked to their consumer relations department and spoke with a very friendly and helpful representative. One of the things she is responsible for is monitoring internet forums and keeping track of how much attention their different product names have been getting. Inuyasha: Kanketsu-hen is the continuation of the original Inuyasha series. Basically, the people who made the IY anime are making "the rest" of the anime that will follow the last volumes of manga - thereby actually finishing the story/anime.

It was an incredibly rendered and creative movie. The film was so unique, unpredictable, and intriguing. Such movies are so undervalued in American culture it's ridiculous.

Nowadays, animation seems to only serve the purpose of entertaining for an hour and a half. I think it's becoming a dying art. I'm currently reading Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life by the amazing animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. In it, they speak about how animation started as an art form - one that attempted to capture life and emotions in a series of drawings through movement.

I think this aspect of the art is slowly being lost in American animation. It seems to me that Americans in general only want to be entertained, and most do not want to watch a thought-provoking animated film (rather, they'd like to be humored for an hour or so, then readily forget what they've seen). Anything that jumps outside that boundary seems to meet with adversity.

Perhaps that's why I am so drawn to Japanese animation.

The Japanese have such an incredible sense of creativity and thought. It's an aspect that I've always envied and loved. Actually putting thought into stories, creating deep characters, and taking the time to make beautifully animated features (such as Miyazaki's films) are all positive qualities that I think American animators could learn from.

In regards to my last journal, I was under the influence of what is known as a "perfectionist panic attack." I think I may have been a little over-the-top with some of it...

I want you all to know that I will still be posting my art; I will still read/respond to comments; and I'll try to keep up with my friend's journals. I'm over my whole "artistic crisis" and am now in full LEARNING/PRACTICE mode. I've started paying more attention to things and documenting stuff in my head for later creative uses.

I'm also working on a much larger scale now, so it's harder to document those pieces. Especially since my scanner is too small (and is not working at the moment), and my camera doesn't take very high-quality photos.

Anyways, I forgot to tell y'all about Nan Desu Kan!

It was definitely a new and exciting experience for me. I don't think I have ever seen that many people in costumes before! Now I can't wait to cosplay for next year's convention! Just gotta come up with a character to portray. I know for sure I won't be going as anyone from Naruto, Bleach, Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy (and I saw so many Edward Elrics there it was crazy!).

Maybe I'll do something Okami-related, since I only saw Issun there. xD

The AMVs were pretty good, and I picked up some new songs/series to listen to/watch/read:

- Nemo by Nightwish ~ I am ADDICTED to this song. I've listened to it over 40 times in the last few days!

- Death Note ~ (I'm on volume 5 of the manga & will watch the series soon) L makes me laugh & Light is a bastard.

- ahahaha, I can't believe I'm gonna type this, but... I've also watched the first half of Princess Tutu. It's not amazing by any means, but the interactions between the characters, the classical music, and the fact that Takahiro Sakurai does the voice of one of the main characters (Fakir, who is teh amazinghotsauce ROFL) kinda won me over.

Sadly, I didn't meet anyone from dA there (though I recognized 2 of the artists at Artist's Alley), but there's always next year!

Overall it was a blast, now I can't wait for the next convention! 8D

These feelings have been generated by a recent critique I had in my Intermediate Drawing II class. On Wednesday, I presented my projects to the class (I have not posted any of them here yet), and received plenty of praise for certain things. However, the main point that came across from both the professor and my fellow drawing mates was that my art was too illustrative and not as profound as the others' works.

I came back to the apartment feeling horrible.

I know that my art is good, no one needs to tell me that. What frustrates me is how complacent I have become. I have become satisfied with how I do things and what I draw. Satisfaction is not something that kindles the spark of creativity. Often, when working on a piece, I'll come to a point where I just get tired of working on it, and then I say, "That's good enough," when really, I could have done so much more to it.

For example, in my piece Sleeping Trio, I was doing the grass, got fed up with it and decided to just submit it as is. Looking back on it now, I'm disgusted with the grass, because I can see that the grass is transparent in areas where I didn't go over with the brush hard enough.

To me, that's laziness.

After a lot of consideration (and mild conversations with myself), I've made a list of my thoughts and decisions:

1. My art is good. I do have talent, but talent alone is not enough. I MUST DRAW, PAINT, AND PRACTICE TWICE as hard as I have been.

2. Photoshop is a crutch. I need to go back to basics and become a master of traditional mediums.

3. Instead of sitting down and playing video games or whatever else in my free time, pick up my anatomy book and sketch/study, work on drawing other animals, practice the human figure, learn more about perspective, read up on color theory, etc.

4. This one is probably the one that will affect y'all the most: I will be limiting my time on deviantART to 1 hour a day.

This means that I will no longer have the time to thank people for favorites (though I may thank the occasional new watcher). I will still try to respond to everyone's comments like usual, and I'll try to read my friends' journals when I can.

How will this affect Rosie's art and uploads of it here?

Well, right now, all I am guaranteeing is this: I will finish the remaining trade I have with =kankakanka; I will get the Jamboree done before 2009 ends; and the few Photoshop pieces I have left will be completed when I feel the need to work on them. As for uploads, I'm not sure at the moment how common they will be anymore. I need to focus on real life at the moment. (Which includes career and internship searching, as well as college art.)

As for the subjects of my art... I will not be doing fan art any more (if I can help it, though something might jump in once & a while). I'm going to try to stimulate my creativity more and come up with more original concepts and artwork. I would also like to start focusing more on humans instead of everything being animals.

Nowadays, the world of artistic careers is very competitive, and only the best of the best get the grand dream jobs. In order to build a better portfolio and to become a well-rounded artist, I need to work harder and be able to devote my concentration to my own artwork with my own subjects. I can't submit a portfolio full of fan art to a company and expect to be accepted...

I'm going to my very first convention! It's one of the biggest anime conventions in the Rockies - Nan Desu Kan! I'll be going with two of my good friends on Saturday (a week from today).

Is anyone else going to NDK? It would be cool to meet others from dA there.

I haven't quite decided what I'll be wearing (I'm not cosplaying, as I procrastinated and forgot to make a costume), but I am going to make a badge for myself! 8D *excited*

Well, I've finally gotten through my first days of classes. So far, it's been good. All the classes should be relatively simple to keep up with, though there are a few that will obviously be challenging (Intermediate Drawing II & History of African Art).

Tuesdays and Thursdays are very, very long days for me this semester. I have 4 classes on those days - they start at 9:30am and go 'til 3:15pm, and I only get 15 minutes between each of the classes... @,@

and...

ANTHROPOLOGY IS THE MOST BORING CLASS EVER.

I know that we just started and only talked syllabus & introductory stuff, but seriously it was so dull I was already drawing in my notebook (which usually only happens when the class starts to get dull half-way through a semester).

Also, with classes starting this Monday, I'm desperately trying to squeeze the last bits of summer out. But it is now official. I am a true-blooded fan -

I went and bought the whole paper-back box set (thanks to a 40% off Borders coupon) and I got the first 5 movies on DVD (saved a butt load by buying the box set online).

It's been worth every penny.

I have now seen all the movies, and I finished the 3rd book today!

Even my family has gotten interested - we've watched the first three movies together. ^,^

My favorite character is still Snape - I loved him in the third book. xD However, I did also enjoy Professor Lupin & Sirius Black.

And.... I'm no where near finished with the Jamboree. I've done all the flat colors, put in a base background (basically mapping out the mood & colors), and I've finished shading 2 characters out of many.

So... I have come to terms with it. I am now a fan.

Harry Potter.

"OMG YOU DIDN'T LIKE HP BEFORE?!?"

No, to be honest. I didn't really have an interest in it. I went with my friends to see the 4th & 5th movies when they came out, watched "Harry Potter Puppet Pals," and saw trailers/teasers, and that was the extent of my knowledge/interest in the story/franchise.

However... after watching the latest movie with my friends, my interest was sparked. So I borrowed the books from my best friend and started from the beginning.

LOVED IT.

A couple days ago I finished the first book and now I am half-way through the second one. Already I'm dying to keep reading and get on to the next books.

And... tomorrow I'm gonna go to Blockbuster and rent the first movie. xD

I'm loving the characters and their interactions, personalities, etc. But... my favorite one so far is Severus Snape. LOL ...even though he's kinda the bad guy to Harry & his friends.

NO SPOILERS PLEASE! Well... most things have already been explained/spoiled/revealed, but... it's still fun and exciting to read and not be totally expecting something.

Anyways, I'm back at home for the next week or so, and then I'll be staying at my apartment through til the holidays. Hopefully during the time I'm here I can get a lot done on the Jamboree and continue reading the HP books!

My inbox doesn't receive new deviations from an artist I watch. Every time they upload a new one, the only way I know that they did is because it usually makes the front page. Otherwise, my inbox shows nothing.

It's bothersome, because I've been watching this deviant for some time, and just recently noticed I had not been receiving the new deviations in my inbox.


Does anyone know what's wrong? I've checked the Help/FAQ but I can't find anything about this issue. I figured I'd ask y'all first before actually going to the Help Desk.

I'm thinking of re-opening my commissions here in the near future. I will be offering both traditional and digital commissions. This is what I'm thinking of offering:

Traditional~

I will mail the original to you, but it will cost a little extra, in order to cover mailing fees. The mediums I'm considering working in for commissions are: colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic, ink, and something new/different than I've offered before - sculpture.

I haven't worked with clay in over year (since The Lion and the Mouse piece), and I've been itching to do more. Prices for sculptures are yet to be determined, though... >^<;

Digital~

With digital commissions, I have decided this - the commissioner will receive a higher DPI version of their commission for use as a wallpaper, icon, etc. However, that piece MAY NOT be used to make prints from and sell them.

Also, I think I will offer something new - if desired, I will make a print of the digital piece for the commissioner and send it to them, for extra of course, just like the traditional art.

Prices and such are still floating around in my head, I need to go catch them. ^,^ But I will say that they will be reasonably priced.

These are my opinions/observations, nothing else.

Lately on this site there has been a plethora of drama centered around one thing: critique.

It seems some artists on this site do not delight in receiving critique. Many a time, I see comments on pieces where someone has tried to give an artist an opinion or tip and that artist responds in a not-so-pleasant manner. All too often, the artist that rejects the tip is a well-recognized artist - an artist whom many people on this site deem "proficient" or "awesome" at art.

Now, to me, that seems silly. No matter what age, no matter how skilled an artist may be, we all still have more to learn! I would figure an artist would be willing to listen to a tip/critique. Granted, there are times when it can be aggravating receiving critique on something when we do not want it. It also goes without saying that it can be bothersome when someone leaves a comment that does not come across as a critique.

However, when a fellow artist offers friendly critique, it is good to listen to that advice.

By taking the advice of others with a grain of salt, an artist can learn a lot, and oftentimes the critique given can open up a new door onto the path of improvement. For example, a couple years ago, *akelataka gave me some good critique on my first Jamboree piece. I kept in mind what she said, and I was able to improve a lot with her help. Then, last year, she offered more wonderful advice on my second Jamboree piece. These critiques have allowed me to think in a different way and improve my art in more ways than one. (Thank you Akela!)

On the other hand, if an artist does not take any form of advice from others, how can they improve? They will continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. No improvement. In my mind, that is a sad thing. Especially when that artist only gets constant compliments from their loyal followers. (What really kills me is when comments say things like "The anatomy is perfect! It looks so real!" when in reality, the subject of the piece has poor anatomy and the subject is stylized.)

In my opinion, an artist should be open to critique of any kind.

While it feels great to receive positive critique and "constant praise," negative critique can also be beneficial. At the time it is received, it may not be well-accepted, but because it is not aimed at being a "friendly" or "let me be nice to you" kind of critique, it makes an artist listen or think more about what could possibly be wrong with their piece. This kind of thought process is incredibly important in art.

"How can I improve upon this?" "What can I do to make this look amazing?"

Artists should always be asking themselves these questions and should always be open to critique. Otherwise, how can we improve?

Not many of y'all probably know/remember that I illustrated a children's book back when I was a Senior in high school. Those of you who do, this was it! Plus my roommate is full of awesomesauce, so I don't think we'll have any trouble.

I still need to pack all my stuff up and do last minute prep work, though. Which means that I will not have a lot of spare time for working on my art over the next week.

Which brings me to art updates:

Still working on this year's Jamboree. I plan to have all the line art finished by today. Once I finish the line art, it's on to flat colors and background basics! Hopefully, if all goes well, I should have the piece done before I start Fall Semester (late August).

So far, I must say I'm quite pleased with how the Jamb is turning out this year. :3

Also, I'm hoping that once I get all moved in, I can set up a little "studio space" in my apartment room. It will be an area only for working on traditional art, so that way I also have a place to lay everything out and actually work on my art without the worry of having to pick everything up. Just hoping that there's enough space to do so, as I've been itching to have a studio space for quite some time now.

As always, I have many other projects going at the same time, so maybe I can complete one before moving out/in. Cross your fingers!

He also showed me how to chop wood (which is harder than it sounds). The downsides were not getting enough sleep (because it was so quiet I could hear everything moving around in the night, on top of being on a strange bed) and getting a pretty bad sunburn on my shoulders (despite putting on sunscreen).

Got home yesterday afternoon and I was soooo tired... But we still had to unload the car, which we did. Then I spent the rest of the day catching up on dA and other internet stuff (and taking 10 minute cat-naps in-between it all. I slept like a log last night.

I hafta go to bed early tonight *bleh* so I can wake up extra-early tomorrow morning so the fam and I can catch a plane to Florida. I hate early-morning flights so much. I am not a morning person.

As I've said before, I will have connection to the net at my Gramp's condo, but I probably won't be on very often over the next week. I will be spending time with family & friends, and I hope to be able to work on lots of digital art. *cough*JAMBOREE*cough*

2. Pretty much after we get back from camping, my family is going down to Florida to visit my Grandpa. This, as some of you may know, is a tradition in my family - going to the beach to watch fire works for the 4th of July. :3 I will be there for a week.

This week has been rather slow in the art department. Every time I try to get going on a piece, I get interrupted (whether by family or other events). However, I have managed to finally make a proper reference sheet for Yorokobi! I introduced him back in the fall of 2007, but I never got around to making a character sheet for him.

Speaking of Yoro, I am currently working on a piece with him, Seiyaku, and George in it. It is nearing completion; I'm hoping to finish it within the week.

As for the Jamboree, progress is very slow on it, as it is a very large project, once again. I only have 3 character line arts done... >,<; I need to either pick up the pace or drop all my other art I am currently working on.

Anyways, main point of this journal is to say that my artistic summer has just begun. At the moment I have at least 10 files sitting on my computer, each at different stages of completion, 3/4 of a sketchbook full of random drawings, ~12 pages of zoo sketches, and various other projects...

...such as my yearly project, if y'all know which one I'm talking about. I've got the rough sketch done and uploaded on my computer. I plan to start detailed sketch work & line art within the week. My goal is to have it completed before I move into my new apartment in mid-July.

The movie was full of emotion, lively characters, and brilliant animation, effects, textures, etc. As much as I like UP, though, I still love WALL-E more.

Also, last Wednesday I finally got to see Star Trek. Now I'm no trekkie(s/p?), but I have seen enough of both the old and new shows to know most of what was going on. I LOVED THAT MOVIE. It was marvelous. YAY FOR SPOCK!

Anyways, I have some important art updates:

~ I don't think I'll be opening commissions; I apologize to those who were hoping I would.

~ Reason behind that: over the summer, I am going to be studying and practicing until my hand falls off. I've gotten rusty, so very rusty, and I haven't been challenging myself lately, so I need to do this. Here's my training regiment (in case y'all are interested):

> sketch at the zoo at least once a week - draw animals I don't usually draw

> re-learn the human anatomy from the inside out - I plan to start with the skeleton until I can draw it, detailed, completely from memory, then move on to the muscles in the same manner, and so on and so forth. I will keep drawing/studying until I can draw humans at any angle, perspective, etc with perfection.

> learn more about color theory. I've never taken a color theory class, and I need one desperately. I don't know much about colors and I'd like to be able to do more with them.

> do traditional art. I've let my traditional skills dwindle - it's time to pick my brushes, markers, etc back up and get back in the game.

> PERSPECTIVE STUDIES - I want to learn extreme perspective. I know the basics well enough, now I'm ready to move on.

I've only been able to check what's going on on dA lately because I have been extremely busy with college projects, homework, finals studies, and the like. For example, in the past two days, I have spent 10+ hours in the print-making studio alone. That's just for one class, mind you, I have 3 other classes - one with a final project due next Tuesday and two with final tests next Thursday.

As if that weren't enough, I've been waiting for about 3 weeks to hear from the head of the Drawing Department of my college about getting an override into a class I need to take next semester. This was stressing me out big time, 'cause if I didn't get into the class, I'd have to be in college for an extra semester or two...



Good news is, I got the override! So that's one less stress to deal with, several more to go.

9 days and counting until the stress is over!

Once this semester ends, I'll be able to re-concentrate on my personal art, so y'all might see a HUGE influx of art towards the middle/end of the month.

Well, I'm on my second to last week of classes, and then it's finals week. The past several weeks have been a stressful nightmare. I have not been able to focus on my personal art for a while, and the college projects just.. keep.. coming... I'm holding out like I usually do, but it's still rough.

Anyways, I have a question:

If I were to offer sketch commissions, who would buy and for what price?

(the sketches would be traditional pencil on 9"x12" / 22cm x 30cm white sketch paper, and I would mail the original to you upon request - it would just be a dollar extra shipping cost).

I'm still not sure about completely opening commissions during the summer. I have to finish my last commish from last year's set (bad Rosie) before I can start on a new bunch. More than likely, I will only be opening digital commissions and ACEO commissions (yes, I am aware that ACEOs are intended to be traded, so please do not tell me what I already know).

WHO IS SINCERELY INTERESTED? And please, please, please do not post comments like, "I would but I don't have money right now" I can understand that just fine, but having a whole journal comment area/inbox filled with nothing but, "I would.. but I can't..." is depressing. I was in the 4th grade when a teacher burst into the room and told us to turn on the radio. We all listened intently to what the person speaking was saying. Something about a shooting at a school in Jefferson county. Something about the death toll. Something about schools going on lock down.

My classmates, teacher, and I all sat there for at least an hour, praying. Later that night, my parents and I watched the news about the massacre. All the while I sat there, wondering why anyone would want to kill their own classmates.

I still don't understand.

This tragedy was so close to home for me. Any time I hear of another school shooting (ie- Virginia Tech), I get chills because it reminds me of Columbine. The worst part is, whenever I am reminded, I attempt to imagine what I would have done in that situation. Would I have run out of the school, leaving my friends/classmates behind? Would I have run, but gathered all my friends first? Would I have stayed to help the wounded? Would I have been one of the victims? Would I have been one who was shot, yet was strong enough to survive? All these scenarios and questions race through my head.

I want to say that I would stay behind and help those I could and stop the gunmen, despite the odds of survival, but is that what I would truly do? Or would I run away out of self-preservation?

I hope that I'll never have to find out.

On this day, though, my heart goes out to those that lost their loved ones in the massacre. I could not imagine how hard their loss must be. I'll be praying for them and their emotional scars for as long as my own heart beats.

So you know how last week there was that big blizzard? Well it's snowing again. And it's windy. Siriusly, Colorado, where is spring? ;^;

Anyways, my friend and I went to our anime club's dance party last night (my first time being at a dance party *gasp*) It was a blast! Though I woke up this morning and my legs weren't happy with me. >,<; They played lots of anime-related songs and we got to learn 2 traditional Japanese dances - "Odon" I think they're called? (Is that right, senpai?) We all had such a good time - I hope they do it again next semester!

In artistic updates, I have some important info that I'd like all of my watchers and those visiting my page to read:

I do accept trades, and y'all can feel free to ask me, but I will tell you now that I am quite picky when it comes to choosing the artists I trade with. So if I turn you down, please do not be offended.

Some people have asked me about commissions. I'm not really sure I want to open them yet. It's nearing the end of the semester so I shouldn't open them now. Summer may be very busy for me, so I don't know if I'll open them then either. I will let you all know ASAP when I will be opening commissions.

Also, I am planning on taking a month off from dA during the summer just so I can study and practice drawing humans. I'm thinking it will be either June or July, but I just wanted to give y'all a heads up. I really need practice with humans - lately I've been drawing humans a lot in my sketchbook, but they turn out looking awful, and it seems I'm only capable of drawing them in certain poses - which really places limits on me. I've been leaning on the crutch called "animal drawing" for much too long. Animals are easy to draw compared to humans. Plus, I have all these original ideas in my head for human pieces, but my abilities of drawing people aren't up to par. So I feel taking a long break from dA will allow me to concentrate fully on this goal.

I obviously could not thank everyone individually, but I did thank many of y'all and responded to most comments. To those I did not thank personally, I offer a larger round of "thank yous" to y'all.

I'm still not quite pleased that a Pikachu caused all this ruckus, but at the same time, I am grateful for the attention and support it has given me.

For my new watchers, please be advised: I don't have any more "semi-realistic" Pokemon planned. As I have said before, I only made that Pikachu as a trade with my friend. I do not want to be known merely as a "fan artist." I would love for my original works to be as well-recognized as my fan art pieces.

To those of you who recently watched me merely because I painted a Pikachu, I hope that you all will stick around and support my personal/original art as much as you have supported my fan art.

Um, okay what the hell is going on?! I opened my inbox this morning & there were over 500 messages! Then, I saw that the Pikachu I made was on the front page. Why? Just because it's a flipping Pikachu? Good God, you people. I don't know whether to be incredibly happy or incredibly flabbergasted. It's taken me over half an hour to get through those messages, yet they just.. keep.. coming...

;^; I can't keep up. I'm not used to this.

Also, for those who are new watchers and are hoping that I'll be doing more Poke-art, you will be disappointed. I'm not intending to do more.

Please don't take this wrong, everyone. I am very grateful for all the attention, faves, comments, etc. But it's just overwhelming me. So I apologize in advance if this edit seems.. well, whiny. T^T I just don't know what to think/do/say.

I love spring break. Love it love it love it.

lol, anyways, lately I have been on a HUGE art kick. My sketchbook has been filling itself up, my digital pieces are turning out great, and in my college art classes, I've been doing quite well.

This is wonderful for me, since the past month and a half or so, I've been feeling like I was about to hit an artistic wall. But lately, bricks of inspiration have been hitting my head, so let's just hope I keep getting chucked at, instead of running into a wall.

So... for my graphic design class, we needed to have Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign in order to create some of our works...

Originally, I just planned on using the art studio's Mac lab to make my projects, and I have for two projects so far. However, after being in this class for over a month and thoroughly enjoying every exercise/project so far, I'm leaning towards becoming a double-concentration art major - drawing & graphic design!

Since I would need to be using the Adobe software throughout the rest of my college career (and possibly beyond that), I went over to my college's software store and bought an Adobe software pack.

That's where the beauty of being a student came in. *shimmery eyes* The software bundle I purchased included not only the 3 programs I needed for my graphic design class, but also Flash, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks! But this is the best part - I only paid around $350 for it all.



Being a student rocks. Discount Adobe software rocks my socks off. Now to go explore the wonders of Flash...

Okey dokey, now that I've posted the prints I was talking about...

Would anyone be interested in buying an original print from me?

First, let me tell you the process I went through to make Moonlit Hunt Version Two:

I started off with a sheet of zinc metal. From there I laid out a quick composition in my sketchbook of how I wanted the piece to look. After finalizing my sketch, I prepared the zinc plate for etching.

Beginning with a nice, clean zinc plate, I covered the surface with a light coat of a tar mixture. Then, I put the zinc onto what is called a "hot plate" which is just a flat, heated metal surface. After fixing the tar to the plate via the heat, I let the plate cool, and then the drawing process began.

Using a steel stylus, I scratched the tar off the zinc plate wherever I wanted there to be lines. This took quite some time to do... at least 3 hours I think (and that's just for the lines as seen in Moonlit Hunt Version One ).

Next, I put the plate into an acid bath - a mixture of 12 parts water and 1 part acid (which is a kind of weak solution) - for about 35 to 40 minutes.

After letting the plate etch, I cleaned the tar off the plate, and there were my lines, etched into the plate where I had removed the tar! From there, I inked and wiped the plate so that the ink only remained in the etched lines.

On to the printing press! After letting my paper soak for 45 minutes, I pulled it out and prepared it for printing. I lined up the paper and the zinc plate onto the press, turned the lever, and then pulled my print. It turned out very nicely, yet not how I had sketched it. The atmosphere was lacking.

So... I used the aqua tint process to create ranges of value. With this process, I had to lightly cover my zinc plate with a layer of a gum-based, powdery substance - aqua tint. After heating the plate to fix it to the surface, I used what is known as "stop-out" to preserve the lightest lights in my print. (Basically, it's a liquid that is brushed on to prevent the metal from being etched while in the acid bath.)

Once I applied the first round of stop-out, I took the plate and put it in the acid bath for a minute. Then, taking it out and rinsing the plate with water, I put another layer on, this time on the next level of value.

I repeated this process 6 times, I believe, with the time allotment of the plate in the bath being about 1 minute, 1 min, 1 min, 1 1/2 min, 2 min, 2 min.

Cleaning the plate was a little tough, because I had to use denatured alcohol to remove the stop-out (which didn't want to come off easily), but I eventually got it nice and clean.

I repeated the printing process, and with splendid results! When I finally pulled the print for Moonlit Hunt Version Two, I was so excited with how it turned out, I decided to print a couple more.

So that's the whole process behind just one print. Overall, I'd say the amount of hours put into this 6"x12" piece would be... 7 to 8 hours probably? (not all at once, mind you)

With all that being said, the price for an original print will not be cheap. I'm thinking around $70 maybe. I am willing to ship the print, which would be on very nice, Rives paper, so just let me know (via note preferably) if you are interested!

This has been my best birthday week ever.

On Wednesday, my friend and I got together to apartment hunt. After we did some research, we got hungry and went out to a Japanese restaurant. We got a Rainbow Sushi roll and a Spicy Beef Udon noodle bowl to split. Now, I had not tried sushi in such a long time, and had always avoided it, but I worked up my courage and tried it again. It was quite tasty! Afterwards, we went back to her house and watched some of the Hana Kimi Japanese drama. It was a lot of fun. ^^

Then on Thursday, the same friend and I met up in the afternoon and hung out at my dorm. I let her play Okami for a while, and then we went to eat some dinner before going to anime club that night. Anime club is just so much fun. After anime club, my friend and I went to go get mochi. MOCHI IS FLIPPING DELICIOUS.

Friday came around, and I traveled back home to be with my family for my birthday weekend. That night we went to go see Coraline - which was an incredibly well-animated movie. A little creepy, but it was still a good movie, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, yesterday I woke up feeling sore in the throat. I only get sick once a year, and it's usually around my birthday. *sigh*

Anyways, my family & I went out to eat for my birthday dinner at one of my favorite restaurants. We got back home and were sitting around watching the telly when the doorbell rang. My parents said it must be some of our family friends stopping by to wish me "happy birthday". So I got up to open the door...

and several of my closest friends were standing outside!

They all completely surprised me, it was awesome. I feel so privileged to have such wonderful friends!

To say the least, it was one of the most fantastic birthdays I have had in a long, long time.

Tomorrow I step into the realm of adulthood - I will no longer be a teenager! Yep, I turn 20 years old tomorrow. TWO DECADES OLD! It seems a little surreal.

I plan to spend the weekend hanging out with my family and doing some major catch-up on art, as well as do some anatomical studies. I picked up some AWESOMETASTIC books from the university library - they're animal anatomy books for the artist - it shows the skeletal structures, muscle structures, and superficial structures of various species of animals. When I discovered them at the library, I literally plopped down on the floor in the aisle, content as a cucumber, while browsing the HUGE art/drawing section of the library.

:happytears: I'm thinking of going out and buying two of the books I borrowed, because they are excellent references for skeletal/muscle structures & range-of-motion.

- I also have at least 10 digital pieces that I am currently working on. Over half of them are detailed pieces, though, so it will take some time to finish them, so please have patience.

- Also, I have been itching to do some traditional art lately. I want to get my watercolors back out and work with them, as I have let my traditional skills get rusty. I'm planning on making a piece for the W.O.L.F. sanctuary to sell at their annual Waltz for the Wolves event (see WOLF's website for details - [link] ). I'm pretty sure it's going to be in ink or watercolor, or maybe a mix, I can't decide.

College Art UpdateL

I am taking two studio courses again this semester - this time they are Printmaking I and Intro to Graphic Design. I am definitely enjoying both, although they both are quite tedious in their processes.

In printmaking, we are making dry point prints of an object(s) in the studio. It's the typical, boring, first piece, but I think mine has turned out well so far. I've already made two prints, and plan to make a final print of my plate on Monday. However, I also managed to snatch a piece of scrap zinc plate (what we use to make the print), and I'm going to make another image with it, just to have in my portfolio.

I'm having to learn how to use Illustrator at the moment in Graphic Design. Thankfully, it isn't too hard yet, since I have experience with Photoshop.

Ah, last thing to mention - I recently joined my school's anime club! 8D My friend and I go there once a week to watch different anime & hang out with other Otaku (lol) Right now, we are watching 4 series:

- Code Geass: Lelouche of the Rebellion
- Kino's Journey
- Wallflower
- Last Exile

My favorites are Code Geass & Last Exile 8) I hate Wallflower's style, but it's good for teh lulz.

Oh, and the first time I went, we watched two movies - Origin: Spirits of the Past, and Paprika. I liked Origins, as it reminded me of Miyazaki's works, but Paprika messed with my head... @_@

In art-related updates:

I have to admit that I have been putting limits on myself. I've been too afraid to make mistakes or try new things/techniques with my art, and because of my fear of failure, I have been preventing myself from growing artistically.

I've been thinking about it for quite some time now, but I could not figure out exactly what it was that was deterring my artistic development. Then I read `hibbary's latest journal entry [link] . It was a revelation. I highly recommend reading it.

It's time for me to stop doing things half-heartedly. No more worries. No more fear. I will not be afraid to fail. If I fail, I can try again. It's time to head back to the artistic drawing board.

As of this moment, I solemnly swear to do my best in all my artwork, to try new things (even if they aren't what I normally do), to follow my own SketchPracticeStudy method, to not put boundaries on my art and imagination.

So look out, Rosie! From now on, we're gonna work even harder and longer to improve and to learn!

I wish dA would give a day's warning before just switching to new design layouts...

I can't decide quite how I feel about the new features. I like being able to customize some attributes of my profile. What I don't like is the design itself. It's a little messy, in my opinion. ESPECIALLY the deviant information at the top of the profile. It's too cramped and not well-organized. The colors are also throwing me off. I like the dark grayish greens better than this sickly light color.

Oh well... I guess I better just get used to it... So long as there aren't glitches & what not, I guess it will be okay.
