The one problem I see with the graduation panel... if you are more of an organic modeler (or whatever) you have to have a certain amount of hard surface or architecture models in your reel or you fail and dont graduate. They are asking for 9 total.. and if you have 6 great looking pieces you will fail and not walk. CRAP!

I think they should have given us what the graduation portfolio requirements almost a year before we graduate so that we can get working on things. Not the week of our final quarter and expect us to have all of those things all ready to be chopped up and put into a great looking demo reel. The class should be about making our reels look and feel good, not working on lighting and texturing our pieces. I call BS.

observational drawing is pretty freakin awesome... I have done a piece that I really like.. I will scan it in sometime this week or next (not for sure this weekend cause my cousins are here visiting YAY)... in my fundamentals of editing the current assignment is to take the (most random) clips he had and make a music video... seriously though.. the clips are so random! like airport scenes... people walking.. little pieces from "The Great Train Robbery"... some really old film of Hollywood from the 50s or something... some clip of the a grand canyon type thing... and this really weird space movie ... thats not all either... i just cant think of the others... Ok with that said... we have to put together a music video (1min 30sec long)... any song of our choice... in final cut pro.. a program of which I have no idea how to use... and the teacher really doesnt seem to "teach" us anything.. he gave us the clips.. told us what buttons do what in the UI and lets us go and do what we needed to do... ok.. now i have a huge problem with that...

my camera and lighting class is pretty sweet... same instructor as my animation class... I love the way that guy teaches... too cool... ok... and last is my critical thinking class... thats my only GE class of the quarter... the class is very cool... just a whole lot of work lots of reading .. which doesnt bother me.. its just that the subject is written like a math book... if statement A = statement B than statement B = statement A... and so on and so on... all these fun rules for testing arguments to see if they are valid, strong, false, weak.... all that good stuff...

all in all though... im a really enjoying school... for the first time ever. I hope graduation is still on for March of 08... thats my estimate... not the academic directors... so i dont even know if that is right... graduation might be held on the Strip when I graduate instead of the pavillion here under the big white tent... They are gonna do it at Fashion Show Mall... its right across from the Wynn and Treasure Island i think... our work will be up on the plasmas for our protfolio review (before graduation)... and then as we do the whole ceremony our pieces will still be on the screens... geez the amount of potential employers seeing our stuff has just grown a lot... im glad they wont have it in some closed place that people have to go into to find the portfolios... this could be really good for us. right now i am going to start the tree frog drawings... and im gonna do it in oil pastel cause i havent done a drawing in this medium in a looong time ]]> ~JussListen http://JussListen.deviantart.com/journal/5295171/ http://JussListen.deviantart.com/journal/5295171/ Sat, 07 May 2005 16:34:43 PDT i was actually surprised at how well the sketches came out considering i havent drawn any animal since freshman year of HS i think... and of course.. what animals did i draw this time around.. a black and white tiger (i think thats what it is).. a penguin and its baby, a koi fish (which i am totally excited to color) and a red eyed tree frog (you know which one im talking about... it has the most awesome greens, reds, oranges and blues i have ever seen on one animal!!) ..
i think the frog has to the one im most excited about because I have always loved the use of color.. I just havent used too much in all my years of doodling and drawing (weird i know...).
The tiger is going to be B&W charcoal no bright colors for that one (i want to keep it dramatic) and the penguin one.. well of course it is going to be black and white but i will use a yellow/orange/red for part of the pic (which i didnt even realize was on a penguin.. because in my mind they are just B&W) ...
now the problem will be filling in the empty space around each of the pieces... i know for the penguin one i am going to do a great bottom half... well at least i hope it turns out cool..
the koi.. we i want to draw some lotus blooms around it.. but thats all i can think of for the negative space...
the frog is on a leaf... but im not sure how i want to color it... maybe i want to make the leaf a crazy black and red to show off the frog even more... but then again im not sure if thats what im gonna do..
my biggest worry is if i mess up on the negative space with the tiger... it is already in a weird position on the paper... the mouth is WIDE open, teeth and tounge are almost dead center ( i really didnt want to do that.. i wanted the composition to be a little better then that but oh well right?) + the tiger has no eyes... it is cropped about half an inch above the nose of the tiger...
