So check this out. I got my new EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens today for my Digital Rebel camera and I was checking out the IS feature (Image Stabilization) and I gotta say... it works amazingly great. It actually works better than I thought it would. I took a couple of test photos to prove it... I was really surprised by the results.
If anyone is considering getting a new Canon lens... if it doesn't have a large aperture like f/1.8 or something, then make sure it has Image Stabilizing... it truly does make a difference... believe me... I can hardly believe it myself!

So, I've decided to send the 28mm prime lens back. I'm not really going to miss it because I have the EF 50mm f/1.8 that is equally as sharp if the shot requires the very most detail (such as portraits). So I finally decided that I wanted the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. It's supposed to be an all around great lens and I hope that it will be the one lens I use for most of my photography. I heard the sharpness isn't as great as the EF 17-40mm f/4 L lens but, that's understandable. I didn't go for the 17-40mm L because of 2 reasons: 1.) No Image Stabilization 2.) 40mm isn't much of a zoom. I wanted a lens that would out perform my 18-55mm kit lens yet, have a wider range of zoom. If I'm in a place where I need to quickly get in on the action, I can zoom to it rather than try to get closer and miss the moment while I'm getting there.... sure, I'll sacrifice quality a little bit but, I'd rather get the award-winning shot rather than a super sharp piece of crap because I couldn't get close enough. Plus, I love wide angle shots, especially for landscapes. The 17mm is even a tiny bit wider than the 18mm anyway, so that will be kinda nice. I'm really looking forward to using Image Stabilization because I read that you can shoot hand held photos 3 stops under normal and get the same results. The only real problem I can see here is it's an EF-S lens and will not be compatible on a full-frame sensor camera, so if the future brings only full-frame cameras, I'll have a lens that's incompatible.

I think Canon will continue to improve the resolution on their cropped sensor cameras because with a cropped sensor, you can actually get more detail because your 85mm lens suddenly turns into a 136mm lens so you can zoom in closer. Also, with a cropped sensor, you won't notice as much vignetting or sharpness drop off because that stuff can't get projected onto the sensor. The downside is... you have to get the EF-S 10-22mm lens in order to get extreme wide angle such as a 16mm lens on a full frame camera. On the other hand, by the time I upgrade to a full frame camera, I probably won't want that lens anymore anyway.... If I'm buying an expensive camera, I'll probably get expensive L glass to replace my 17-85mm lens anyway.

So, that's what's going on... I hope I get a good copy and won't get burned again like the defective 28mm that I got... what a pain this is. Anyways... I can't wait to start shooting with it... should get here by tomorrow or Thursday.

Okay, so tonight I thought I'd try out my new 28mm lens again for the heck of it. It was still doing the same slow focusing and high pitched squeak... however, I took the lens off and I was looking through it with my eye up really close to the back and I think my eye cavity hit the back plastic part of the lens... and I somewhat felt it move (or at least I think I did). Then I just rotated the manual focus ring a few times back and forth and wiggled it a little... then I popped it back on my camera and to my surprise... the focus was a lot quieter (no more squeak) and it seems to focus a lot faster than before... where before it was very slow moving from out of focus to in focus... now it's about as fast as my kit lens at focusing.

So, do I still return it and get my money back... or should I keep it now that it's working okay. I've never owned or even tried another USM lens... so I still don't know if this is 100% fixed or if something is just aligned right now and could go back to crappy if I bump it just right.

Also, I've been thinking that I may have made the wrong purchase.... What I really think I want now is a general purpose zoom lens that is higher optical quality than my 18-55mm kit lens and a larger zoom range.

So far my two most popular choices for this is:
EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 USM IS: The pros for this lens are; super wide angle to medium telephoto range, USM, Image Stabilization. Some cons are; fairly slow at only f/4-5.6, big, heavier and will not work on a full frame sensor so if I upgrade to a full frame in the future, this lens will not work.

EF 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 USM: The pros are; nice zoom range, slightly faster than the 17-85mm, cheaper and compatible with all Canon EOS cameras. The cons: still slower than the 28mm f/1.8, no image stabilization, not wide enough at only 28mm on 1.6x cropped sensor

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Do any of you Deviants have any suggestions on what I should do? I hope J&R Music and Computers can accept my returned 28mm if there's nothing wrong with it now. Oh great... how do I break it again?

So after reading tons of awesome reviews about the prime EF 28mm f/1.8 lens, I sprung for it and ordered it from Amazon.com. It quickly arrived today but, I am sad to announce that I will be returning it just as quickly as I got it. The problems I'm having with it have to do with the focusing. The USM technology claims to be near silent... while I didn't expect it to be dead silent, I expected it to be quieter than my other non USM lenses. As it turns out, I was mistaken. The auto-focus makes a fairly loud squealing sound or squeaking sound. It sounds as if the parts need to be lubricated or they're rubbing against each other. Not only is the sound different than what I expected but, the focusing is very slow and inaccurate compared to my cheap plastic lenses. Also, auto-focus seems to lock up after only a few minutes of use and I had to keep pressing the shutter release button to get it to unstick. All of these things lead me to believe I got a defective product. If anyone owns any USM lenses, can you tell me if anything like this is normal... it certainly is annoying and doesn't seem right.

Like, it will have the normal half like "deviantart.com/deviation/57817091/" but, then it will have extra text after it that doesn't really make sense. My older photos do not have this and I notice other people's photos don't have this as well... but, it says something like "?qo=2&q=by%3Ajust-spaztik&qh=sort%3Atime+-in%3Ascraps" at the end. Why does it say scraps at the end? I'm not submitting them as scraps.

Anyways... It seems like people don't comment on my work anymore. Or maybe I've been taking really bad photos lately... maybe I need something groundbreaking. I dunno... whatever. Watchers, are you seeing my work in your Watch list?

Any photographers looking to get a good deal on cameras or photo equipment... stay far far far away from USAPhotoNation.com. They are not for real. They are a bait and switch operation. They claim to offer unbeatable prices and the best deals on the net but, they rip you off. I almost made the mistake of buying from them until I read all the nasty reviews about people getting seriously cheated from them. I'm so glad I found those reviews before I had to deal with them too much. I ordered a camera and the same day, I started thinking about it and the more I thought about it... the less sense it actually made... so I decided to do some research and I'm so glad I did. Luckily I contacted them right away with a nasty email demanding for my order to be cancelled... which they did pretty much right away. Check out these responses from people dealing with them. [link]

From now on... I'll take this as a lesson... to only deal with online vendors that have a familiar name and people trust.... such as Amazon or J&R.
As a conclusion, remember to do outside search first if you're ordering from a new website.

Yes... after reading so many great reviews about this lens (50mm f/1.8) I figured I could really benefit from the large aperture for indoor use and also the smooth bokeh will look good on portrait shots and flowers. It arrives in my hands tomorrow and I can't wait. The lens was only $74 on Amazon.com. Check it out. The reviews have been mostly good except for the obvious cheap construction of the lens to keep the price low but, most people say it's comparable to the EF 50mm f/1.4 in glass quality and sharpness. I figured I'd get the cheap lens now and if I like it and end up using it a lot... then it breaks... I'll go for the pro model (50mm f/1.4).
I'll be sure to chime in with my thoughts as soon as I get it and I'll also most likely take some interesting photos with it to show it off... hehe. Until next time......... WOOOOOSH!

I got fisheye envy whenever I saw samples from the 8mm Peleng fisheye lens on online photo galleries. Also, I double checked to make sure I was looking at images that were taken with the Peleng 8mm lens on a Canon Digital Rebel. So I got chills because I was seeing the kind of photography that I always wanted to take. So after reading all the great reviews about it, I went on eBay and ordered one from New York right away because I don't know how long the guy from New York was going to have these in stock and I don't really wanna deal with Russians (I'm not racist but, I'd rather deal with someone in my own country because it makes me feel better). Anyways, I plan on making that money back by selling some things that I have kicking around that I've been meaning to sell. Plus, if I get the lens and greatly prefer it over the Zenitar 16mm then, I'll sell that lens and keep the Peleng. Do a google search for Peleng and you'll find tons of unique photos. Like I've said before, I've always loved the look of fisheye lenses and I plan on taking some killer skateboarding photos up close. I also have a fisheye lens almost permanently attached to my digital camcorder.

I posted a shot of a tree at night in my scraps gallery. I plan on taking some comparison photos showing the difference between my 16mm fisheye lens and my 18mm-55mm kit lens.
Once I get some more money saved up, I think I'm gonna go for the Peleng 8mm Fisheye for an even more pronounced fisheye effect. The Peleng will work on my cropped sensor better because it's a wider fisheye.

Anyways, this isn't a bad little lens. I have some tests to conduct.

Okay, so some of you may know that I'm getting a new fisheye lens from eBay for only $130. I've been reading more and more reviews and articles about this lens and apparently I missed an important tid-bit before I ordered this thing. Here's the deal. Due to the "crop factor" of my camera, I will not get the full fisheye view but, instead get an ultra wide angle lens with slight distortion near the edges. My Canon Digital Rebel doesn't have a full sized sensor so it cannot capture the full effect of the fisheye. I heard that this Zenitar 16mm Fisheye Lens is almost equivalent to a 12mm Wide Angle lens with some barreling around the edges. I still have not received the lens yet. Perhaps I'll be surprised and end up really liking it. For only $130, at least I didn't spend a huge amount if I happen to not like it. Also, I read that it holds it's value due to the solid construction and quality if I want to resell it.

Hello all journal readers! This is my very first journal entry. Anyways, I was browsing for an ultra wide-angle lens for my Canon Digital Rebel and most of them were way too expensive and I wasn't sure if I could justify spending that much money on something that I may only use every once in a while. That is until I came across a lens on eBay (No it's not one of those adapters that goes over the stock lenses) This is an actual fisheye lens for the Canon SLR cameras. Yes, it's very cheap but, that's mostly because it's all manual... there's no auto functions such as auto-focus so it will be just like the old days of photography. However, since my camera is digital, I can see a preview of what I just shot and if I didn't get the shot right, I'll try again until I'm happy with it. Also, it may be good for me to get into using my camera in straight manual mode... no automatic functions at all. This could be a great experience and I won't break the bank with it. Heck, if this lens is just used for fun and trials, I don't care. I've just always been interested in fisheye photography... I mean, sure it's not used often and should only be used when necessary but, I'm sure I'll find uses for it. At only $129 I think it's a wise purchase for my first fisheye lens.

Oh, before I forget, here's a link to the eBay page of this lens I speak of. [link]

Go check it out. It may be something that you want too.
