I’d like to note I have no real point to make, these are just musings of mine Also spoilers if you’re planning to play The Path

In 1997 Michael Haneke released a movie called Funny Games in which two boys, one of which can control the environment, take hostage, torture, and kill a family in their home. The director has stated it was meant to be a statement about violence in the media.

Now anyone who knows me well knows my disdain for this movie, for the admittedly shallow reason that it breaks my One Rule of Horror Movies that the villain cannot be more annoying than the protagonist. More to the point, while I think the film made the statement it was meant to, I don’t think it did it very well.

I bring this up only because Funny Games popped into my mind while I was playing The Path, namely because I rather thought The Path brought home that kind of statement about violence in the media more home than Funny Games did without really trying to. It didn’t make me ask any questions about myself, certainly. The Path, of course, has the advantage of bringing the viewer into the story better than Funny Games for the simple reason that The Path is a game, and Funny Games is a movie. The director, the actors and the characters have control of the movie, the antagonists more control than most, and the audience has none.

The Path is a horror game released by Tale of Tales in 2009. It’s a supremely surreal game and the makers haven’t made any statement about what it’s supposed to represent, rather saying that it’s up to the player to come up with their own interpretation of what’s going on. It draws on the story of Little Red Riding Hood (many incarnations of it) both visually and story-wise, as we play as one of six sisters traveling down the path between the apartment they share with their mother and their grandmother’s house. We are given a strict warning to stay on the path and indeed you can guide your chosen girl down the path straight to Grandma’s house, where she will take a basket of goodies to Grandmother and lay down next to her. End of game.

Can. That’s the key word there. You can stay on the path. However, in order to actually explore the game and interact with most of the things, you have to take the character off the path in search of her ‘wolf’. Every character has a certain spot in the woods that is hers and her ‘wolf’ is waiting there for her. Once you find the ‘wolf’, a cutscene happens and the scene goes black. When we gain control of the character again, she’s laying just outside of Grandmother’s house in the dreary rain. You can do little but guide her up the rest of the path where she limps with agonizing slowness to the door. Once inside, we switch to a first person view and depending on the girl, the rooms have been changed considerably. You walk through the house until you get to the girl’s room at which point the screen goes blank again and we get quick flashes and pictures of the girl and her wolf which seem to suggest the girl died rather painfully.

This is a very basic explanation of the game, it is extremely visual and as I’ve mentioned you don’t get any particular explanation of why and what and how, you’re presented with the environment and the girl and it’s pretty much up to you to interpret what you see from there.

I played the girls from oldest girl, who is 19 years old, down to the youngest, Robin, who is 9, and it was playing Robin that the game stuck with me the most, and where the Funny Games comparison popped up.

I’ve read a couple of posts and blogs talking about how they interpreted the game and what each girl symbolized and so on and so forth. I’m not going to get into my thoughts on the who and the what, at least at the moment, that isn’t the part of it that intrigued me. What each ‘wolf’ and setting and end game has to say about each girl didn’t interest me half as much as what it says about us, the player. Several people on the forum made reference to the girls’ actions bringing ruin down on them which I found interesting because the girls are the characters and can’t do anything without us guiding them. We, the player, are not passively watching anything going on, we’re guiding the actions of the girl, so what, exactly does this game tell us about....us?

As I said, this happened when I was playing Robin, who we find out through things she says and intros about her from the site, is a lively little girl who loves wolves. Her ‘wolf’ is the only one in the game that’s an actual wolf. It is this hideous, decrepit looking werewolf thing with spiky black fur and a permanent snarl that’s lurching around a cemetery.

Having played through all five of her sisters...

Spoiler warning for those of you that haven't seen it, I'll try to put any major ones at the end.

So, as a b-day gift to myself I went out and finally saw Drag Me to Hell. I was the only one in the theater which was nice for me but made me slightly sad since it's only been out a week :/

About halfway through this movie I was feeling slightly disappointed because it wasn't quite over the top enough for me, which teaches me to dismiss something out of hand because holy HELL does that change.

It hasn't got a great deal of gore, I've heard people complain about that, but it has plenty of other bodily fluids squirting around and has some truly squirm inducing moments in it of the type only Sam Raimi can provide.

Another thing it did well was jump scares, easily one of the most overdone devices in a horror movie. I can usually see a jump scare coming from a mile away and usually they don't work that well. Raimi's jump scares work in this one and I'll be damned (haha) if I can figure out what exactly it is that worked so well. I think it's a mixture of visuals and timing, he's just good at setting up a shot so even though you know a jump scare is coming, the timing of it still makes it startling.

Thoughts:

1- Who keeps an anvil hanging in their garage?

2- The goat was only in the movie for five minutes and was the funniest character in it.

3- Christine, NEVER pause to fire off a one liner.

*Spoilers beyond this point*

4- Dude, some geek her boyfriend is. She gets him that nickel he wants so much and he keeps it in an envelope for three days rather than put it straight into his collection? You fail at nerd, Clay!

5- THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is a fucking DEMON. Not only does he bust through windows and slap people around before dragging them off, he waits until Christine is certain she's safe, seems her life is really getting on the right track and is right there in front of her man long enough for him to show her the button right before he drags her off.

6- Sam Raimi stated Christine starts out thinking she's good and ends up pretty despicable by the end of the movie, I think I'm probably despicable then because I totally related to her and furthermore was really hoping we'd get to see the old bitch burn. I guess I'll see you all in hell

7- Also if he wanted that to come across and set some kind of sympathy up for the gypsies, he probably shouldn't have had the first victim be a little boy. Just sayin'. I mean, sheesh, you think damning Christine to hell was a bit harsh....how old was that kid, nine? Ten?

8- Um, gypsy folks? People I am descended from? I rather think this cavalier attitude of sending people to hell who really...let's be honest now...don't really deserve it, is not the smartest thing to do. You're sending someone who hates you down to a place where hatred and rage are probably the only emotions you can nurture and keep a hold of and giving them an eternity to plot, that reaaaaaaaaally doesn't sound like a good thing for you or your bloodline.

9- On the above thought, this is one of the first movies in a long time I wanted to base a fanfic off, just because that's a good set up. Christine comes back as a demon and starts ripping through the old lady's family and the only way they can save themselves is find a way to give old Mrs. Ganush's soul over. Yea it's stupid, but hey

Art got a little better, I learned the only place I am more out of place at than high school is in a corporate workplace. I'm no richer but really no poorer than I was at this time last year.

So all and all nothing ventured and nothing really gained.

Wow, I'm boring.

On a side note I did get to see Rent with Anthony Rapp and Adam Pascal reprising their roles from the original show so I'm counting THAT as an accomplishment.

So, there was a Final Destination marathon on where they showed all three movies back to back. So I watched them off and on in between crappy Sci Fi channel movies (my guilty pleasure) and have kinda been musing on stuff about them.

I saw the first one when it came out and at the time I pretty much dismissed it because the premise is pretty ridiculous and only serves as a set up for a group of teens to die a horrible death. This is not a bad thing, mind you, as long as it doesn't try to be anything deeper than that. I'll give the writers credit for coming up with an interesting twist on what's basically a teen slasher film. They can't fight what's killing them off, they have to find a way around it and don't particularly succeed.

What I dismissed in the first one was the idea that Death itself was some kind of entity that was actively going after these kids that 'cheated' it and I still do. Rather than Death being just some neutral force that happens to us all, it gets pissed off when someone cheats it? What for? It's not like it doesn't have ten thousand other deaths on this planet alone. Does this happen to anyone who some accident just happens to save their life? Does it only happen to people who have premonitions? Are the ones having premonitions just people who happen to be psychics or is this a sudden thing? There's no way to really think on the premise without taking it off in ten thousand different ideas and directions, which wouldn't work for a cheap horror movie XD I read in the comic the end character is actually some kind of reincarnation of a goddess of fate which is also stupid but hey, at least it narrows things down a bit.

What I was kinda snickering over was the idea of making whatever's killing them off some kind of entity rather than some vague malevolent idea of Death. Like a Nyarlathotep type entity that deliberately gives the main character a vision to get the ball rolling and starts killing them off because....well because. Instead of "you have cheated death and now Death must even the scales!" it would be "Some powerful entity decided to make it seem like you got off light and then kill you off in even more horrible ways. Why? It was bored." Add on to the idea of something killing off these kids in horrible ways and laughing about it the fact it sends the main character little signs about who is next just to fuck with them...come on that's awesome and creepy at the same time XD

Spoilers abound here for those who haven't seen Stephen King's The Mist, so don't read this if you haven't seen it and want to.

Just got done watching the Mist and wow, that's a good movie. Everything a good horror movie should be and amazingly true to the original novella. The monster designs were extrorindary, the acting was good. I'd heard someone complaining about Marcia Gay Harden being cast as Mrs. Carmody but I think she fit the part just fine. I think they focused on the whole Arrowhead Project aspect a little too much, in the original I kind of liked that there WAS no explanation for the mist in the novella, just vague explanations. But then again the novella was told entirely from David's point of view and you can't really do that in a movie, so as far as that goes it's pefectly logical and it wasn't like they said "this is what happened". The setting and the feel of the movie was my favorite part. When they're driving, when you see bits and pieces of the world around them, or what's left of them, it's really something. Up until the part I'll mention in a minute, I adored that movie.

Except...

Except....

SPOILERS

Except it had a hack ending.
A HACK ending.

I haven't sat in shock over such a stupid ass ending since that dumb plot twist in House of Wax.

Please, don't get me wrong. I am not someone who thinks there needs to be a happy ending tacked on to the end of a movie. But along that lines, I'm not a fan of tacked on endings at all, and that includes ridiculously depressing endings tacked on to movies just because they're depressing. The fact it's undeniably depressing isn't the problem, it's that it's STUPID.

I'm not even upset about the fact David shot everyone, that I could have lived with. It's a horror movie after all, and David IS thinking of it somewhat as a worst case scenario in the book. If he wasn't going to go with the ambigous ending in the original novella which leaves things open ended, which I was expecting and honestly would have preferred, then there were several points when he could have just ended the movie after David shot everyone. When he's screaming in the car. When he's outside the car calling out to whatever he thinks is in the mist (which would have been hard to pull off I'd say but it wouldn't have been as stupid).

No, it's when the mist magically clears to make way for the military that it went from being a horrible but fitting ending into Pretentionville. Not only am I disgusted by the dumbass 'mist clears up right after he shot them all' twist, but then he rapes and beats the dead horse a few steps further by putting the lady who left earlier looking for her children in the truck.

Let's review:

-The lawyer and his crew didn't make it 300 feet.

-David and the others, only half of them made it to his car.

-The guy who ran for his truck right as the mist was taking over was killed within seconds.

-The army guy they stabbed was also killed within seconds of being thrown out. (You could argue with him that he was bleeding and it attracted the monster but still.)

-The bag boy didn't even go -out- and he was killed in minutes.

But a small, unarmed woman who walked out into the mist without having a fucking clue what was out there somehow not only got out of the parking lot but managed to get all the way out far where David and the others had to drive for what was seemingly hours? At least to a point where a tank of gas ran out? How? How'd she do it? Did the military pick her up? If they were stupid enough to be driving around in the mist why didn't they pull out all the stops and go looking for survivors in buildings and such? They had guns and flamethrowers.

The whole movie calls for a suspension of disbelief I'm more than willing to suspend but Jesus, that ending was pathetic. Maybe I'm just overannoyed with it, but it almost seems like the director was just heaping on bad stuff and waving his arms saying "I'M BETTER THAN HOLLYWOOD, I'M NOT AFRAID TO GIVE MY MOVIE A BAD ENDING! SEE?? SEE????????"

Yea, whine whine bitch, I'm just really irritated. Even more so because the movie was -so- good up until that point.

Soooo, the same people who do the National Novel Writing Month thingy have another contest coming up in April.  Script Frenzy, same idea as NNWN except you have to write a 100 page script.  Can be play, screenplay, graphic novel or comic book script, whatever.  So I've been pondering, going over several ideas.  I've written a hella lot of plays already for my playwriting class so I wanna try something different and at the moment it's either looking like a graphic novel or a TV show screenplay.  No brainstorming yet, since that would be cheating, but I've narrowed it down to a few ideas;

1. TV Show- based off the Cthulhu mythos with a small group fighting against the creatures in a world taken over by the Great Old Ones. Anyone who read the novel I started for the other contest, The Hunter of the Old Ones, this takes place in the same setting.

2. Dungeons and Dragons based graphic novel- centered around a blind Drow Pale Master, Aryn, who is part of a trimuverite that includes a lich and an undead mind flayer. It'll follow her story starting with her birth on up to the forming of the triad. Aryn- [link]

3. Graphic novel or screen play- Based on Clive Barker's Tortured Souls action figures. Not based on the original story but taking place many years later, in rebuilt New Primordium, incorporating the Tortured Souls 2 figures and a few from the first one, as well as a couple new ones.

4. Adult graphic novel- Based on Jaz Shade, a vampire character.

5. Graphic novel or TV screen play- Not likely but a couple ideas I've had for Devil May Cry fanfics I may try out as a script instead.

It's down to that five with a couple other ideas but those four are the ones that are pretty much on the forefront at the moment. I have a week or so yet, so I'm gonna give it some thought still, anyone's got any feedback feel free to give it

Character Meme:
The Rules: Pick 12 of your characters, don't look at the questions beforehand, then answer the questions.

1. Jaz Shade (RPs and stories)
2. A'ngeline (Neverwinter Nights fanfic)
3. Fara (Devil May Cry fanfic)
4. Veil (Dark Wonderland RP)
5. Surreal (Dark Wonderland RP)
6. Enyela (Adventure Quest fanfic)
7. Rell (RPs)
8. Thrade Amana (RPs)
9. Rhiannon (RPs and stories)
10. Veronique (RPs)
11. Leap (RPs)
12. Lucidique (RPs)

1) Who would make a better college professor: 6 (Enyela), or 11 (Leap) ?

Gahahaha! Neither of them, though I suppose Enyela actually has the maturity to manage it. Leap is like a hyperactive five year old in an eighteen year old's body and Enyela is in actuality about six years old but she doesn't look it. She could probably handle the teaching part but the idea of a blue haired, freaky eyed, be fanged and horned creature standing in front of a class is freakin' hilarious.

2) Do you think 2 (A'ngeline) is hot? How hot?

Nope. Valen does I imagine but women a full head taller than me and capable of turning into an animal at the drop of a hat don't turn me on.

3) 12 (Lucidique) sends 8 (Thrade) on a mission. What is it, and does it succeed?

Lucidique disguises herself as a fellow druid and sends Thrade on a healing mission. Unknown to her, Lucidique plants a disease on Thrade that eats her away slowly as she passes through the forest and spreads from her, killing nature all around. It doesn't succeed because Thrade's husband senses it and together they manage to banish the disease but Lucidique is long gone by then and laughing all the way.

4) What is, or would be, 9 (Rhiannon)'s favorite book?

The Stand- Stephen King

At least the good guys win in the end and start rebuilding after the end of the world, which is more than she can say.

5) Would it make more sense for 2 (A'ngeline) to swear fealty to 6 (Enyela), or the other way around?

If it came down to it, Enyela would probably end up swearing fealty to A'ngeline simply because she is at heart, a follower. A'ngeline, however, is a loner who doesn't put up with very many people around her so she'd be rather hard to swear fealty too

6) For some reason, 5 (Surreal) is looking for a room-mate. Should they share a studio apartment with 9 (Rhiannon), or 10 (Veronique)?

Veronique prefers her catacombs with her family but she'd gladly take Surreal in, that's what she does Surreal would freak Rhiannon out a tad.

7) 2 (A'ngeline), 7 (Rell), and 12 (Lucidique) have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss?

Since Rell is a vampire and A'ngeline wouldn't be able to comfortably sit still inside for very long, they'd go to one of the many cafés Lucidque owns and sit on the deck. Rell would make polite conversation and Lucidique would try to persuade her towards helping her cause chaos, which Rell would refuse. A'ngeline would be feeding the pigeons and teaching the squirrels how to steal better food so she wouldn't be paying attention.

8) 3 (Fara) challenges 10 (Veronique) to a duel. What happens?

Fara would never outright challange someone to a duel, really, but if they did end up dueling it'd be one hell of a fight. Veronique could kick her ass physically, but Fara is a powerful sorceress and who's good with the shields. Offhand I'd say they'd both agree it wasn't worth the time and call it off.

10) Suggest a title for a story in which 7 (Rell) and 12 (Lucidique) both attain what they most desire.

Light of Despair: Gaining Peace Right in Time for the End of the World

11) What kind of plot device would you use if you wanted 4 (Veil) and 1 (Jaz) to work together?

HAH! Jaz travels back in time and ends up at the den of inequity Veil's counterpart was raised in and teaches him to protect himself.

12) If 7 (Rell) visited you for the weekend, how would you get along?

Probably rather awkwardly. I'm a common, lazy brat who swears like a sailor and she's a proper lady. I imagine she'd be too polite to call me on it though.

13) If you could command 3 (Fara) to perform any one task or service for you, what would it be?

Hook me up with Dante XD

14) Does anyone on your friends list resemble 11 (Leap)?
<...

The lovely miss MariaSunderland ([link]) posted this in her journal and no I'm not gonna do tagging but I couldn't pass on the opportunity: XD

1. Choose a few of your own characters. Five at the most.
2. Make them answer the following questions.
3. Then tag three people.
4. Feel free to go ahead and add some questions yourself!!

I'll pick a handful of my chars from several sections (RPs, stories, ect):

Jaz Shade, Rhiannon Galloway, Fara, Veronique, A'ngeline

How old are you?

Jaz: Fuckin' hell, I don't remember anymore. Couple thousand at the least.
Rhiannon: 23
Fara: 36
Veronique: I haven't the faintest idea
A'ngeline: 32

What's your height?

Jaz: 5'7"
Rhiannon: 5'6"
Fara: *grumbles* 5 feet even
Veronique: 5'9"
A'ngeline: 5'9"

Are you a virgin?

Jaz: A- Who would be after all that time, and B- If you knew my mate, you wouldn't even ask that question.
Rhiannon: Hah! No.
Fara: *Glowers* I don't see how that's any of your business.
Veronique: Virgin? *listens to mun whisper and widens eyes* Oooooh, uh...no...
A'ngeline: *Rolls eyes* No.

Do you have any kids?

Jaz: Got a boy I raised from an infant. Don't worry, I killed his parents so they didn't object.
Rhiannon: You gotta be kidding me.
Fara: Why? Who sent you?
Veronique: Well, I suppose you could call him a son, yes....
A'ngeline: No, but that's not for lack of trying, believe me.

What's your favourite food?

Jaz: I'm a freaking vampire, take a wild guess.
Rhiannon: Hand over the chocolate and no one gets hurt, that's all I'll say.
Fara: I'm partial to pizza, myself.
Veronique: I don't eat.
A'ngeline: Oooh, meat! Any meat!

What's your favorite ice cream flavor?

Jaz: Okay, okay, I occasionally eat chocolate
Rhiannon: Mint chocolate chip
Fara: French vanilla
Veronique: *Shakes head sadly*
A'ngeline: What's ice cream?

Have you killed anyone?

Jaz: Only one or two thousand.... *studies nails*
Rhiannon: I try not to, but yes I've killed a couple people.
Fara: No...I've turned a couple demons into stone does that count?
Veronique: A few...
A'ngeline: I kill when I have to...

Do you hate anyone?

Jaz: One...
Rhiannon: Paris Hilton, but then again who doesn't?
Fara: No, hate is a weakness people too foolish to deal with their emotions and problems suffer from.
Veronique: No. I used to, but not anymore.
A'ngeline: Not at the moment, no, but ask me another day...

Have any secrets?

Jaz: You should know better than to ask a lady that.
Rhiannon: If I told you, they wouldn't be secrets, would they, dumbass.
Fara: *points to Rhiannon* She covered it.
Veronique: I have so many secrets I don't even know them all.
A'ngeline: Well, this one time in the hells I met this incubus and we....what? Why's everyone shushing me?

Do you love anyone?

Jaz: Oh, yes. You'd never think of it looking at me, would you? Darius and my boy Cael to name a few.
Rhiannon: *Blushes and clears throat* Erm...hey look at that sky, huh?
Fara: Dante, I suppose, but not the way you're thinking. He's like a big, ultra annoying little brother, but hell I can't help adoring the big lug, you know?
Veronique: My mate and my family
A'ngeline: Valen and my mother and my father and my godfather....well the list just goes on.

What is your job?

Jaz: I'm a professional bitch. No, really. I have a card and everything.
Rhiannon: I'm a paranormal investigator.
Fara: I do freelance research with spellcasting and curse breaking on the side. All rumors that I am a professional pain in the ass are false. *glares at certain demon hunters who will remain nameless*
Veronique: I look after the others in the catacombs.
A'ngeline: I'm a healer by profession.

Boy or girl?

Jaz: I like both on occasion they both have their.....oh, you meant am I a boy or girl.
Rhiannon: 100% woman, baby
Fara: I am female.
Veronique: I was created to be female.
A'ngeline: Despite wise ass comments to the contrary, I am, in fact a woman. I have boobs and everything.

What do you do to relax?

Jaz: Sex.
Rhiannon: I like to play chess. What? I can think on occasion!
Fara: I like to study and craft new spe...

So, on Friday I went to my first lecture by an actual internationally reknowned artist. Even went to the reception before and ate little finger foods and cheap wine in the cast gallery of the museum which wasn't interesting because I've seen every plaster cast in it at least fifty times...
But I digress.
The man was definitely....er...interesting. Had on the coolest damned jeans I've ever seen, that was the first thing I noticed about him, not sure what that says about me.
He's famous, or infamous if you prefer, for his photograph "Piss Christ" which is a photo of a crucifix immersed in a tank of urine ("I only use my own urine", which are not words I was expecting to hear said in the same auditorium I'd taken art history classes in, let me tell you) and then taken through the glass. Oddly beautiful despite the title. Anyway, he got into a lot of trouble for that one and sadly as with things like that it's what he's most known for.
He went through a whole slide show of his work from the start of his career to the end of it, starting with his earliest photos which were abstract works using blood, urine, and semen, and a mixture of those three in various ways, and all the way up to his current portraits centered around America he's working on currently.
I can't honestly say I got much inspiration from the lecture but that's not his fault, as I've never been interested in either real time or photography in general. It was pretty cool though and he was the first guest I've ever been to that let people ask questions -during- the lecture rather than after it. It was hilarious at some times because there were intellectuals there that kept asking him questions about symbolism and 'is your choice of imagery a sign of your own inner uncertainty and blah blah blah' along that lines and he just kept saying, basically, "Nope, just felt like doing it."
So all and all it was rather fun!

So.
Me and two other girls were working on an installation project on the art building's front lawn. That's where most of the class had it set up. I liked our project. It was cool. It was an abstract sculpture of a hand. We had a hella time making it stand up fully but we did.
So I came in to class to help finish it up today and found out last night someone(s) went through and smashed pretty much everyone's projects on the lawn. Only the ones very close to the corner and up close to the building itself were spared. Our sculpture is no longer a hand because there was no possible way we could rebuild it to hold itself up anymore. It was too damaged. Now it looks like a wooden wave type sculputre. Very fluid and cool I think but we worked so hard to get the original looking right. *cries*
So whoever did it is an asshole and I hope they die. Gah.

Er..yeah.
Today was cool. In sculputure one of my classmates was ready to dip a figure he was working on in bronze so I got to see that whole process done. Very cool. *nod* When they poured the bronze into the mold they did it too fast on one and a bunch of molten metal shot up from some of the holes like teeny tiny volcanos.
Aaaaaand I want to work on my drawing. Specifically my figures and illustrating stuff. But I can't. 'Cause I have to draw (very badly) a skeleton for drawing class. Grrr. Ah, well, I'll get it done and try to practice tonight.

The title is a lable I saw on my way out of the sculputre building today. I have no idea what Sulferated Potash is but it sounds cool doesn't it???

K.D.'s rules according to MST3K

How you should know when the hell to get out of the theatre or switch the channel.

1. If the movie is produced, directed and written by the same person.

2. If #1 applies and said person also STARS in the movie, run faster.

3. Any movie title that starts with 'The Beast of....'

4. Any movie title that starts with 'Night of the' that isn't directed by George Romero.

5. If the hero of the movie talks like William Shatner but isn't William Shatner.

6. Rule #5 still counts if it's an impression and isn't a GOOD impression.

7. If the hero/heroine starts preaching before anything else happens.

8. The movie is trying to have an in depth philosphical theme and involves stalking down (or being stalked by) a rampaging monster at the same time.

9. The movie involves spaceships and bad camerawork together.

I'll probably add onto this list as I go 'cause it's fun
