Maybe I'm just a little psyched over this Africa trip, but I've decided the theme for this contest should be "Off to Africa!" I know what you're thinking; kimono - Africa? How does that work? Basically, I want you to create a kimono design that has something to do with the African continent. I've always been intrigued by the idea of mixing the art of other cultures with the kimono. So, you can create a design that features your favourite African animal, or maybe just some funky tribal designs. And that's not all! Any kimono design inspired by Africa will be acceptable. You've got a lot of freedom here, so your creativity is really the limit on this contest.

For your submissions, you can use the kimono design templates in kurokami-kanzashi's gallery, or you can create your own. You can also simply draw the kimono on a model - say your favourite anime character? Both traditional and non-traditional kimono designs will be accepted.

You can submit more than one entry if you wish. Each entry will earn its respective entrant 10 points in our ranking system. The contest deadline is November 10th, 2007 and voting will be held during the 2 weeks following that date.

Heh heh... so much for keeping the club going during my absence, though. My appologies for that we had some rather interesting difficulties regarding the internet connection I was supposed to have. Basically I was supposed to be allowed to use the internet at the hospital where I was working. Unfortunately, this hospital is built at the top of a plateau and rainy season had just begun with a vengeance. The day before I arrived, lightning struck the satelite dish we were using to harness the net. This caused a cascade reaction and all the hospital's internet technology was fried. It all needed to be sent back to Canada for repair. I tried finding some other internet options, but the cost of even basic service in Angola was so rediculous I was looking at spending about 50 cents a minute. That means about $10 just to glance at my email... Ah life in a third world country - we were lucky enough to get 3 hours of power in a day as it was anyways.

You know, I'm someone who's been camping for many years - I'm used to roughing things a bit, but let me tell you, this trip really made me realize how much here at home I take for granted. Even a disgustingly messy staff house in Killarney seemed like nothing. I saw the inside of about four airports on this trip and even had the oppourtunity to land in a village that had little more than a field of grass with grazing cattle on it as a landing strip. When I arrived at the airport in Toronto this morning, I almost had to do a double take as I stepped off the plane. It had been so long since I'd seen anything so clean and well kept. I feel so incredibly lucky to call Canada my home.

Anyways, sentimentality aside - the contest is slowly getting started. At the moment we've only got one entry, so if anyone has anymore they'd like to submit you've got until November 10th. That's a little over a week - so get cracking!

In honour of the wonderful season of spring, entrants were asked to design some spring kimono. Now, seasonal motifs are very important on kimono, so a list of spring motifs were provided. Designs could be either traditional or non-traditional but MUST include at least one of the listed spring motifs.

Okay, I promised you a contest and so here it is!

CONTEST
In honour of the wonderful season of spring, I would like you all to design some spring kimono. Now, seasonal motifs are very important on kimono, so I've included a list of motifs you may wish to use on your kimono design. Your design (whether its a traditionally styled kimono or not) MUST include at least one of these motifs. If there are any other spring motifs you would like to add to the list, please run them by me first by posting a comment in the journal.

If you would like to design a kimono, or an entre kimono ensemble that's fine. Also, non-traditional kimono outfits as well as tradiitonal ones will be accepted. If you want to actually put your design in a textile form go for it, though I'm not sure the contest deadline will be enough time.

If you would like to use Kurokami-Kanzashi's kimono templates for your design, you are welcome to, otherwise the design may take any format you wish. The kimono design templates are posted in the club gallery.

Admins are NOT exempt from participating in this contest.

KIMONO-LOVERS Club
The kimono-lovers club now had more than 30 members (admins not included). This means we will have our first contest announced shortly - likely in mid-April when I'm finished school and able to devote my attention to it.

The ArtisanCraft Club:

Currently, this club is running a contest dealing with "Recycled Inspiration"
The aim of the game is to create any sort of artisan craft inspired by a famous artist of your choice, and made from mainly recycled or reused materials.
There is one month remaining if you would like to enter the contest.
